India Field Base Medic
The role
The role of the FB Medic consists of looking after the general health of all volunteers and
supporting the operational decisions relating to managing emergencies that may occur.
The FB Medic role in India is responsible for providing support to the Raleigh Expedition and
the ICS programme. ICS is a government funded programme to work with Indian and UK
volunteers to develop an understanding of international development, to have a positive
development impact on communities, to develop volunteer’s skills and confidence and to
engage volunteers as active global citizens post programme.
The ICS programme is scheduled to overlap with the Raleigh Expedition in India. Both
volunteer groups are managed from the same field base. The FB Medic will provide the
same support to both groups in terms of training delivery and operational crisis management.
An important addition to this role is to provide capacity to deploy as an ICS Team Leader in
the event that one of the UK Team Leaders can no longer continue on Programme.
The FB Medic is responsible to the Country Programme Manager (CPM) of the Raleigh
Expedition and to the ICS Programme Leader (ICS PL).
At the start of the Programme you will stock and prepare medical kits for all project sites and
vehicles, complete medical interviews with each volunteer in order to understand the health
needs of the Programme, and give comprehensive first aid instruction to all volunteers. You
will work closely with the ICS PL and Country Director in preparing health related training and
educational materials for use in the rural communities on project. You are also responsible
for preparing regular medical reports to inform the Raleigh Medical Coordinator in London
about the on-going medical health status for programme volunteers.
The FB Medic will predominantly work from field base which supports both the ICS
Programme and Raleigh Expedition. Whilst some project groups may have leaders who are
also medics, not all groups will have a medic on site. The FB Medic will therefore be
required to provide medical on-call support via the telephone to all project groups. At times
this may include Raleigh Expedition groups as well as ICS teams. At regular intervals during
the programme the FB Medic will deploy on a mobile clinic to visit all ICS project teams.
