Manager’s Report
The summer season is nearing its end but activity at the club continues to be high.
I believe September and October are the best months in Moraga for pleasant
weather. A beautiful evening with food and dancing with Diamond Dave took place
on August 15 th ; the weather was perfect and our members danced the night away.
Please join me in congratulating Luis Ballesteros for achieving the Class A status
with the Golf Course Superintendent’s Association of America. Luis completed
competency based continuing education with a strong commitment to environmental
stewardship and has met the GCSAA Integrated Pest Management requirement.
Luis the golf course looks great as well!
The OMPA swim season has drawn to a close with a great finish by our MCC
Waves. The Waves were down by 300 points on Saturday and overcame that deficit on Sunday to finish
in 3 rd place. Congrats to our young athletes, parents and swim coaches for another great season.
On a golfing note congratulations to both our Men’s NCGA golf teams for making the playoffs. On a tennis
note our 3.0 Ladies team is moving on to the sectional USTA playoffs, what a bunch of winners we
have here at MCC.
Please put on your calendar now, October 17 th 5 – 8 PM; RSVP today for our popular annual wine tasting
event at the pool. There will be great food and wine, entertainment and great wine values by the case for
the membership.
See you at the club!
Clubhouse Update
Last month I described the very important process of architect selection, and how
that one decision is amongst a handful of the most important we will make on the
Clubhouse project. I am happy to report that the selection process is now completed
and we have selected the firm Dahlin Group of Pleasanton, CA. The contract
with Dahlin is being finalized as we go to press.
It turns out the selection was quite a bit more difficult than we anticipated. We interviewed
five architects all of whom were extremely well qualified. Each brought a
slightly different view and approach to the table. In the end, we selected Dahlin as
the firm that we felt would best hear and respond to our needs and would do so
cost effectively. Local projects Dahlin has completed include clubhouses at Blackhawk
and Castlewood country clubs, Oakwood Athletic Club and several other Club
Sports in Northern California. They are also the architect for the new clubhouse at
Rossmoor. Beyond the local area Dahlin has completed several clubhouse projects
around the country and internationally. We are delighted to have them on board.
Starting next week the information gathering process begins. In this process the
architect will seek input about our facility wants and needs working with the plan
that was created and presented to the members last year as a baseline. Input will
be sought from our committee, the Board, club staff and member groups. From this
input a preliminary floor plan and architectural design will be developed. It is anticipated
that the preliminary design will be presented to the members at this point,
sometime later this fall.
Thereafter the plan will be submitted to the Town of Moraga to begin its approval
process. The Town process is primarily focused on architecture and circulation
around the site. Since we are not making wholesale changes to the site or campus,
it would seem the Town process would be straightforward. On the other hand, we
are substantially increasing the building size from what is there now so this is sure
to get some scrutiny in terms of circulation and parking.
It is very difficult to predict how long the Town process might take. Best guess is 6
months but it could take up to a year. Your Board President, Don Maddison, is a bit
more optimistic than I but my best guess for construction start is late next year with
opening in spring of 2012 (approximately 18 months for construction). As we get
further into the process, we will refine the timeline and will keep you posted.
Starting next month, I will begin to publish in this space questions you have asked
about the project and our responses to them. In the meantime, please feel free to
call me or any member of the Clubhouse Steering Committee (Don Maddison, Rick
Nedell, Matt Rei, Rich Bartlett, and Allen Sayles).
MCC & Public Safety
We constantly receive inquiries from
members regarding speeding, stop
signs, and parking violations. This
month I thought I would share a letter I
received from a concerned member
recently.
"...I also would like to comment that I have been surprised
by the speed that people drive around the neighborhoods.
I suspect this is an ongoing issue and some of it
may be attributable to college kids home for the summer
but I do notice a large number of other folks (who should
know better) driving very fast on both Augusta and St. Andrews.
Since I live on ... and walk with my kids to both the
club and the Augusta pool, it is a bit disconcerting from
both a noise and a safety perspective. No distance within
the club is so great that 5-10 mph is going to make a material
difference in the time it takes to arrive.
“I find that I can regularly upset drivers by maintaining the
speed limit coming in and out on St. Andrews and while
this is a comical activity, it should not be necessary to be
followed too closely simply because I am driving the prudent
speed (speed limit). It is surprisingly worse than my
experience having lived on ... for 3 years where folks
use ... as a thoroughfare. Perhaps the demographics are
one of the reasons – outside.. area are mostly families
while MCC is likely more retirees and households with no
kids. Anyway, I think that a reminder would be a great
idea."
How about it folks? The concerned member makes
some very good points! It is YOUR community!
Employee of the Month:
SOLOMONE HOKAFONU
“Solo”
Solo works in our Home Maintenance division
installing fencing, siding, painting, doing
light asphalt or cement work. Coming
to us in July of 2007, he quickly impressed
management with his positive “can do” attitude.
A member who had recently had some fence work
done described Solo as, “very professional, hardworking and
an excellent craftsman. He didn’t mind if we watched him
work or asked questions. He is very friendly and was gracious
to us. If it is permissible for members to suggest MCC
staff employees for recognition, we would like to do so.” This
commendation was shared among the Managers and Solo
was selected to be September’s Employee of the Month.
Solo was born in Fiji, and came to the United States after high
school. Before being hired at MCC he worked for a real estate
company doing carpentry and cement work.
Today Solo lives with his wife, Alexandra Herren and four
month old son, Thomas, in their own home in Vallejo. Solo’s
face lit up when he talked about his new son, who is now
sleeping through the night. “He is a calm baby” boasts Solo,
“not cranky!”
A former Rugby player, Solo now prefers fishing or an occasional
game of golf with co-workers after work. As for favorite
teams, he supports these locals: Raiders, A’s and Warriors.
His favorite entertainment is American Idol or America’ Best
Dance Crew . . . . Also going out for an evening of Thai food
with his wife Alexandra. Special talents? Making (and enjoying!)
spicy curry dishes !!!
Thanks Solo, for being such a valuable part of our team!
We’re lucky to have you here at MCC!!
To All Members of the Moraga Country Club,
The Rescue One Foundation is deeply grateful to the many
members who have contributed so much in support of the Moraga-
Orinda Fire District’s paramedic program. With your help we believe
our paramedics are providing us with the highest level of emergency
medical care available in Northern California.
Last year Rescue One provided paramedic equipment upgrades
for our fire engines. This year, the Fire District acquired two
new ambulances to further improve the level of emergency care, and
Rescue One will continue its fund-raising support.
Thank you again for your generosity.
Sincerely,
Carl Weber, Treasurer Rescue One Foundation
Turf Talk
Golf Course Condition
There are some localized wet spots on the
fairways that occurred due to the extreme
change of weather in the last few weeks.
These areas have been monitored as soon
as they were identified.
The maintenance staff will continue making slow progress in
aerating localized dry areas in the fairways, around tees and
greens. We will utilize a small walk-behind aerator with ¾ hollow
tines to punch holes, remove cores, apply seed, fertilizer and
sand top dress. This procedure will improve turf density and playing
surface.
The golf course will engage in the following activities during the
month of October.
+ Greens aerification is scheduled for the first week of October.
Tees and approaches will be aerified during the first week of
October
+ Fairway aerification and sand top dressing will follow during the
second week of October.
+ Greens surround aerification will take place the last week of
October
Each spring and fall, golf courses all over the world aerify their
greens, turning what was yesterday a great putting surface, into
sand-covered, bumpy and slow greens.
The question is always “the greens were so good why have we
punched them?”
If we did not aerify the greens at least twice per year, we would
notice a decline in the putting surface in a few months.
Aerification allows us to perform many tasks during a short period
of time. It allows us to remove organic matter, add soil
amendments, relieve soil compaction and smooth the putting
surface.
The greens at Moraga Country Club are considered by many to
be some of the best greens around, and we take pride in the
product that we offer our members.
Should you have any questions regarding the golf course
aerification please feel free to contact me.
2009 Moraga Country Club Charity Drive for Rescue One Foundation
Rescue One Says: Thank you MCC
We chose Rescue One as our club’s charity because we knew that
their paramedics are rated the finest in Northern California. Our donations
have significantly contributed to the equipment and training
of this superb paramedic program.
On October 10th, Fire Station 41 (our station) is holding an
Open House. The paramedics will be demonstrating new equipment
and you may tour the new ambulances. They are truly “hospital
emergency rooms on wheels.”
Be sure to drop by.
Special thanks to our MCC office staff for all of their help.
Both communities of Moraga and Orinda benefit from the
generous donations from the Moraga Country Club.
A Message from the President
Last month Frank Melón and I attended the
quarterly meeting of the North and East-Bay
Association of Golf and Country Clubs
(NEB) held at Diablo Country Club. I reported
on our progress with the new clubhouse
and our efforts to partner with the
East Bay Municipal Utility District and Central
Contra Costa Sanitary District to provide
recycled water for golf course irrigation.
Once again, after listening to the reports of the 15 other
NEB clubs it was apparent that MCC is doing much better
than the majority of clubs in our area, despite the tough economic
times.
* * * * * *
The two questions that seem to be on a lot of member’s
minds are (1) when will we have a new clubhouse, and (2)
when are we going to demolish the old clubhouse? The
questions stem not only from curiosity but also from a more
practical need to be able to schedule events in 2010 and
2011. The two questions are related inasmuch as we can’t
build a new clubhouse until we demolish the old one. We
now have two thirds of the Project Team on board, i.e., the
Project Manager and the Project Architect. We expect to
have the third member of the Project Team, the General
Contractor, on board later this year. One of the first tasks to
be undertaken by the Project Architect will be to review the
preliminary work that has been done to date regarding the
layout of the new clubhouse and determine if there is a better
way to achieve our objectives. It goes without saying
that this would all have to be achieved with the project
budget of $9.5 million.
So back to the two questions--notwithstanding the specifics
of the actual layout of the new clubhouse, the greatest un-
From the Restaurant
certainty regarding when we can actually start construction
of the new clubhouse is the amount of time it will take for us
to get the necessary permits and project approvals from the
Town of Moraga. We are optimistic that the Town approvals
will be forthcoming in a timely manner so that we can take
advantage of the current favorable construction bidding climate.
Given our limited budget, it behooves us to get the
new clubhouse project out for bid as soon as possible. I
believe a best case scenario has construction commencing
spring or summer of 2010 with completion about 12 months
later.
* * * * * *
As I reported a couple of months ago, the Board of Directors
appointed a Long Range Master Plan Committee (LRMPC)
to take a look at MCC facilities needs beyond the new clubhouse.
Ably chaired by Director Ron Mayes, the LRMPC
has been meeting on a regular basis and has already engaged
in some out-of-the box thinking. One of the ideas
behind the formation of the LRMPC was to ensure that the
new clubhouse project did not preclude the development of
facilities that may be needed to serve members after the
new clubhouse is constructed and operational. The findings
of the LRMPC will aid the Project Architect in determining
the best alternatives for the clubhouse layout.
* * * * * *
As you will have come to understand, there are a lot of exciting
things going on at MCC. Keep in mind that at the end of
the day we will have a new Clubhouse that all our members
can be proud of and enjoy.
Thanks for listening.
Don Maddison, President
Once again it’s time to save the date for our Annual
MCC Wine Faire. October 17 th at 5 pm ($35++) our pool
County Swimmers 09
CONGRATULATIONS
TO ALL SWIMMING,
COACHING AND PARENTING WAVES FOR OUR
3RD PLACE FINISH IN THE OMPA!!!!
I am not sure if the coaches let on that to finish 3rd
today was going to take incredible achievement on the
part of all of the swimmers, the enduring energy and
skills of the coaches, and the unyielding enthusiasm of
the parents. And lo and behold (do people even say
that anymore??), from the goosebump-inducing performances
by our swimmers, to the spirit fingers in the
stands - WE DID IT!!! You have to love how being the
underdog brought out the most amazing “Swim
Ups” both in the Trials and in the Finals.
Thank you, thank you to every swimmer, coach and
parent for giving it your all this weekend. You can see
what determination and teamwork can achieve. Remember
that lesson and apply it as often as possible!
Whether you are getting ready for the County Meet,
relaxing for 2 weeks at home before school (I know,
can you believe it is that SOON!), or on a great, much
needed vacation, I am sure you will love hearing more
stats from our inspiring OMPA performance.
Sometimes it seems hard to build up so much enthusiasam
and energy for the OMPA and then it all ends
and most of us are on to soccer, football, dance, etc.,
when it would be really cool to keep on swimming. But
this finish should be our beginning! Not to overuse the
phrase, but let’s ride this wave all the way into fall
(yes, fall swimming starts 9/15 http://
www.mccwaves.com/?p=1188), through spring and
right back into another phenomenal summer.
Enough cheerleading, on to the highlights - keep in
mind again, our kids were so amazing, there are too
many to mention, so these are the highlights of the
highlights…
Since you didn’t get Sunday stats, we will go with
those.
In the Sunday trials our waves were popping their
times not just by fractions but by multiple whole seconds.
In Backstroke, Nick Bishop, Danielle Brown, and
Michael Carson had HUGE pops in the their trials
swims, while Peter Jones, Katie Dendinger, Lauren
Rodriguez, Emma Scanlan, and Greg Wenning had
equally as important and impressive performances in
the Butterfly.
-A critical contribution to our come-from-behind third
place finish was the collective performances of those
kids who finished SO much better than how they were
seeded (and therefore scored more points for the
team than what was expected - which was exactly
what the team needed for a comeback!). The most
amazing Swim Up was that of Jayson Fernbacher who
jumped from an 88th seed in backstroke to finish
From The Pool Deck
11th! Other notable performances were by:
-Hanna Westphal winning her swim off in backstroke
to make it into the Consols
-Alex Rochlin dropping 4 seconds to go from the
32nd seed to the 12 seed in Consols
-Emma Scanlan dropping 3.5 seconds to go from the
37th seed into the top 20
-Anya Nugent dropping 3.5 seconds to jump from
17th seed to the top 10!
-Allanna Karstetter moving from the 27th seed into
the top 20
THEN CAME FINALS!!
First Back -
-Sam Heyman, Shane Nelson, Brady Huchingson,
and Luke McCurdy finished 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively
in the 6 & Under Boys Backstroke.
-Cole Stevens, Noah Baldwin and Patrick Ratchford
finished, 1st, 3rd, and 5th respectively in the 11/12
Boys Backstroke.
-Sam Flower and Allison Stevens took 1st and 3rd in
the 13/14 Girls Backstroke
-For the 13/14 Boys and the 15-18 Girls, there were
5 swimmers in the top 20
-Kate Miles WON the consol heat of her Backstroke
after being seeded 5th
Then Fly -
-After fighting it out in a swim off, Kellen Clancy wins
his consol heat in Fly and gets a County Time!
Emma Scanlan (ON FIRE ALL WEEKEND!) dropped
3.7 seconds in her trials, and then drops another second
to WIN the consol finals
-For the 13/14 Fly we had 6 Boys in the top
20!! Way to go JD Ratchford, CJ Toohey, James
Coleman, Rodrigo Diaz-Valdes, Bradley and Alex
Rochlin!
-And who could forget the 13/14 and 15-18 Girls
Free Relay Teams — these girls’ splits were
unbelievable!
Please give a wiggle to those Spirit Fingers for everyone
who made it to the County Meet as well.
Thank you for giving your time to read about all of
these wonderful achievements and thank you again
for a fantastic ending to our season. As I mentioned ,
I am already looking forward to next year and
guarantee it will be even better!
Tennis News
From The Tennis Desk
The Stead Open Tennis Championships for 2009
have come and gone. What a great week in every
aspect. We were blessed with wonderful weather,
mornings were cool and afternoons were delightful
for the players and observers. With a full draw
scheduled, our courts were busy all week. With the
large crowds of spectators, parking was scarce but
worth walking a few extra steps to watch some
great tennis.
The tournament desk, run by Barbara and Ken
Blum, with the help of Denise Acker, Suzanne Alexander,
Carol Derry and Sally Whittaker once again
ran like clockwork. Dot Ardissone was busy
throughout the week preparing food for the players
with Jerry on standby if she needed help!
Sally Whittaker planned a great Monday Night
party for all the volunteers who helped with the
Stead.
Our in-house reporter on the Stead Open was
scores, and any other interesting details to the local
June, July and August are exciting and busy
months around the tennis courts. We can finally
take a deep breath, sit back and reminisce about
the good times we had this summer. The Junior
Program was so successful. I say it every year but
we truly enjoy our up-and-coming tennis players.
What a pleasure to have them hanging around and
interacting with each other.
We have so many people to thank for making the
summer such a positive experience: Parents who
drive to matches; Emily Myers who did a wonderful
job of coordinating the Junior Program; Bernard
who oversaw the junior coaches; and of course
Mark who directed everyone to make this a constructive
program.
We ended the program on Friday, July 31st with
our Junior Awards Night. We would like to mention
some awards that were given out to recognize a
few of our junior players who were part of our 2009
Kim Hunter and Karen Orwig played singles at the Districts, winning
5 out of 6 matches. Doubles were handled by Jenny Taylor, Jennifer
Glass, Vee Hoff, Barbara Jordan, Suzanne Young, Karen
Baymiller and Pat Brown. Teammates not available for Districts, but
responsible for earlier wins were Jennifer Capson, Lindsay Walker,
Kirsten Buckley, Mayada Innenberg and Kelly Hodgkinson.
A win at the Sectionals in Carmel will mean the team moves on to
the National Championship in Tucson in October. Best of luck to all!
Golf News
Senior Men’s Golf Association News
On July 2nd, Moraga and Sequoyah visited Richmond Country
Club for the fabulous threeway. The results were not published
immediately because the winning team had a senior
moment and forgot to add the last hole score to their total.
Their names will remain a secret but they have been banished
to Rossmoor, the home of senior moments . Anyway, the revised
and correct placings are as follows: First place from Moraga-Jerry
Hunter and Aubrey Copeland. 2nd place- Paul
Boero and Chuck Healy. 3rd place- Irwin Javinsky.4th place-
Jim Drennan, Gary Irwin and Gene Amato. Closest to the pin
on # 3 was Howard Brandis at 16' 6" and on #7 Jim Ellis at 14'
5".
On July 9th, the Bayonet boys played at Moraga and the field
was large. First place at 116 had Moragans James Tasker and
Rich Larsen. 2nd place at 119 had Lou Rittenhouse, Dennis
Martel, and Herbie Gindy. Also at 119, taking 3rd place, was Bill
Gonsalves. In 4th place, at 120, was Moraga member John
Gentry. 5th place was awarded to Yank Eppinger and Bocce
baller Fred Boettler. Closest to the hole: #7 Norm Nilson,
#10Yank Eppinger, #15 Herbie Gindy, and #5 and #17 Lou "the
singing Frenchman" Lebherz who is formerly from Bayonet and
is to be credited with getting us this home and home.
On Thursday, July 23rd, Moraga had its own shamble. The
format is that everyone tees off. The best drive is selected,
although usually a minimum number of drives from each player
are required, and each player plays his own ball from there.
The best two of four scores are used. Since the field was
small- 6 teams- only 2 places were awarded. At 102 was Bill
Gonsalves, Lou Rittenhouse, Dan Flower and Chuck Healy. In
2nd place, at 105 was the team of Aubrey "The Animal" Copeland,
John Gentry, Fred Boettler and Kanwar Bagai.
On July 29th, Moraga visited Crow Canyon C.C. for another
fine day of golf. The first place team, in the 2nd flight, included
Jerry Hunter at 112. 2nd place, also at 112 was Chuck Healy.
3rd place team with a total of 118 was John Gentry and 4th
place with 118 had James E. Brown as a team member. The
1st flight at 107 was Irwin "cuppa cuppa java" Javinsky.2nd
place at 112 went to Dr. Sperry. 115 took 3rd place and had Mr.
Whitehurst as part of the team while 4th place at 118 went
to Gene Amato.Closest to the pin was Aubrey Copeland. A
special acknowledgement goes to Bryan Cram who shot a 75.
They would have finished in the money except his fellow Moragan
Steve Oliver started hot but could not keep it up. Oh well!
On August 13th, Rio Vista blew in to Moraga for our annual
get together. First place was awarded to Rich Larsen and
Chuck Healy at 122 (pictured below with team members). Also
at 122, but taking 2nd place with our tie-breaking process,
were Jay Bennett and Drew Ostman, and 3rd place went to
teammates Irwin Javinsky, Ed Chin, and Louis Lebherz. I wonder
who topped whom Lou or Eddie. 4th place was secured by
Dave Coburn and Lou Rittenhouse at 123. The 5th place was
held down by Gary Irwin and Eugene Amato at 126. In 6th
place, at 126 also were Fred Boettler and Larry Thompson.
Closest to the hole was awarded to Kanwar Bagai on #7, Lou
Rittenhouse on #10 and to Bill Gonsalves on # 17.
Golf News
FROM THE GOLF
SHOP
The four majors of golf
have ended, summer has
come to an abrupt end, and
all of the kids have gone
back to school. Where did the summer go?
It seems as if we just began the summer as
the heat finally started to come around in the
month of August. August was a very peaceful
month with regard to rounds and tournaments.
September will bring us some really
exciting events. First off, we have the Men’s
Club Championship being held on September
11, 12 & 13. The format is Match Play
and this is event #5 in the season long point
series. The second event we have is The
Players Championship, and it will be contested
on September 26 th . The format for
the Players Championship is a One Man
Scramble. The Players Championship is
event #6 (the final event) in the season long
point series. Just a reminder to anyone interested
in participating in the Players
Championship, that you must have qualified
through the season, earning enough points
or participated in enough events. You must
have earned at least 75 points throughout
the year or played in 3 of the 5 point events
to qualify. If you want to know where you
stand in regard to points log onto
www.moragacc.com and go to golf. Under
the golf you will notice MGA season points.
Following the Players Championship (on the
same day) we have our end of the year
party, crowning the Player of the Year. This
is our first annual point series winner and
that person will have earned having his
name engraved on the first ever “St. Andrews
Cup”, being recognized as The Player
of the Year! You do not want to miss these
events. If anyone has any questions regarding
the points season, don’t hesitate to contact
the Golf Shop.
Also, congratulations to the NCGA Thursday
and Saturday match play teams. They both
qualified for the playoffs with stellar performances
at Oakhurst to put them over the
top. Results for the playoffs will be in the
next issue.
RULE OF THE MONTH
If anyone recalls the Bridgestone Invitational
where Tiger Woods outlasted Padraig Harrington
to win his second PGA event in a
row, you may recall hole #16. This is basically
where Padraig lost the tournament,
making an 8 on this par 5. Specifically I
received a few inquiries as to why Padraig
went all the way around the water hazard
and hit from the fairway after he hit his chip
in the water from behind the green. The key
that needs to be remembered is simply the
lateral hazard versus the water hazard rule.
When Padraig hit his ball into the water hazard
he only had two options: 1. hit it from his
original position (he did not want to hit again
from the heavy rough and try to flop the ball
onto the green), or 2. Go to where the ball
last crossed the margin of the hazard (going
no nearer the hole) and drop anywhere behind,
keeping the line between the flag and
where you are to drop. Because of where
Padraig went into the hazard, he would’ve
been dropping closer to the hole, unless he
hit from his original position. How does that
affect us you may ask? Let’s just say that
on hole #8 or #10 you hit your bunker shot
(from behind the green) into the water hazard.
Your only option without moving closer
to the hole is simply to go around to the front
of the hazard and play from there, or re-hit
from the bunker. Apparently some of you
drop 2 club lengths nearer the hole. Wrong,
don’t get caught doing that in a match! If
you have inquiries regarding any rules issues
do not hesitate to stop by the Golf
Shop.
SALE OF THE MONTH
During September we will be having huge
sales. The new Nike STR8 fit and DYMO
drivers are down from $255 to $199.99.
Also, prices are marked down on all Nike
Fairway metals and hybrids. Shoes from
Nike, Footjoy and Ecco are drastically
marked down as well as our excellent selection
of clothing. We need to move old merchandise
for the holidays! Thanks for your
