With great expectations we are looking forward to Tuesday, August 4 th and the start of the 23 rd annual $25,000 STEAD OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Stead Family of Fine Automobiles and Presenting Sponsor, Barons Jewelers, carry on with their continued support to bring a very high level of tennis to Moraga Country Club. It is an exciting time for all of us to have the best tennis to watch and the excitement of the spectators who travel from all around the Bay Area to be part of this great event. The players are among the best collegiate, satellite and junior players in the nation. For our new members, the tennis courts will be closed for the week to our members so we are able to bring this major event to Moraga Country Club. Special Thursday Event during the Stead On Thursday, August 6 th , we are highlighting the evening matches. We will hold our 5 th annual Thursday Evening Event and have special matches arranged for our members and friends to enjoy. The first feature match will begin at 5:30 with additional matches to follow. The MCC restaurant will be providing an outstanding BBQ, with tickets available in the tennis lounge. Tickets for the BBQ will be limited and should be purchased in advance. The cost for dinner will be $12.00 for adults and $10.00 for 11-and-under-juniors. Our restaurant will provide food to purchase for our members, players and guests throughout the week. It is a great week to just sit back, relax and watch some great tennis. You might even recognize a few local players who will be playing. Last but not least, Sally Whittaker will be looking for anyone who would like to be a monitor during the Stead Open. It only requires a couple of hours out of your day. You will be positioned near the playing areas to help players whenever needed. You will be equipped with walkie-talkies and extra balls. You do not keep score or call lines. It’s fun and easy and you get a front row seat. Sally will be coordinating a volunteer “Thank You Party” on Monday, August 3 rd at 5:30 in the tennis lounge. If you would like to house a player, please call Mark about details, and if you feel like baking or buying something sweet for our players, (cookies/ bread/coffee cake), it is always welcome. We will have a sign-up in the tennis lounge for food. Thank you in advance for your help. It seems like our 2009 Junior Summer Program just began and now we are putting our materials away once again for next year. It was a HUGE SUCCESS and great fun. We had approximately 190 juniors which is up from last year. But even with the higher numbers, it was a smooth summer. We had a lot of happy campers along with our enthusiastic coaches. Mark and his coaches work very hard to make this a positive experience for everyone. At the end of each summer I like to suggest that you don’t mothball your tennis rackets. Come out swinging that racket and maintain your skills. It’s a life-long sport. Thank you to all our juniors and parents for another great summer experience. The Junior/Adult Event was held on July 11 th . We had a great turnout on Saturday: Eighteen junior-adult teams came out for a day of fun roundrobin playing. After a couple of hours rigorous but delightful matches, everyone enjoyed some tasty treats in the pro shop. In the end, everyone left with great memories and a full stomach. David Obrand w/ Daughter Lizzy Alex Hsiao w/ son Zachary REMINDER Barbara is back with her Thursday Night drop-in from 7:00 – 8:30. In addition, Bernard has started a Wednesday night Men’s drop-in from 6:30 – 8:00. The week of the Stead Open we will not have either drop-in.
