President’s Message
Hard to believe we have just turned the calendar to 2013. Though
perhaps we say this with each new year, it seems as the last year was
the fastest to fly by; 2012 now seems a blur.
I recall that the first club member event in the new clubhouse was
the Super Bowl party on February 5, 2012. The paint on the new
facility had barely dried and there we were, taking in a wonderful
buffet with friends and family, enjoying a place that for many of us
was (and is) a dream come true. In some ways that moment in time
seems like just yesterday and in others it seems an age ago.
Much has happened since that auspicious start. Although we came
out of the gates strong, we have only become stronger with changes
and improvements in menu, service and atmosphere. That process is
ongoing, as well it should be; the best never settle for the status quo.
In the now nearly twelve months since we opened we have had 29
open-to-member social events, plus a multitude of private events,
both member sponsored and outside groups. All have been extremely
well attended and received. We on the Board have the good fortune
to read the comments we get following these events. Here are a few
samples (names of individuals and organizations edited out):
“Best restaurant for miles around for sure! Thanks for the time and effort
you put into your profession”. – Member
“I have been receiving loads of compliments on the Holiday party.
In fact … had it put in the minutes … that it was by far the best
Holiday party the … has ever put on. I have even heard from people who
didn't attend that they heard how great it was. So congratulations to you”.
– Participant in outside event
“Just a note to say that our family had a really great time at the 5 p.m.
Thanksgiving dinner. The room looked great, the staff was friendly and
attentive, and the food – all of it – was delicious. All five of us raved about
it that night and we look forward to next year. We really appreciate all the
effort that went into putting on such a nice event”. - Member
“I wanted to send this to you while it is fresh in my mind...God knows it
could go away quickly! Please let everyone know how great today was.
From my buddy, Jason to Ian and Chef Kevin...everything went off so well.
I cannot thank them enough! The food was delicious, as well! All the staff in
the pro shop and the dining room were very professional and cordial”.
AROUND THE CLUBHOUSE
Welcome to 2013! The new season of MCC Clubhouse
2.0 will begin the final week of January. Please refer to the
back cover of the newsletter for hours of operation during
the closure.
From the start of 2012 to the beginning of 2013 it has
certainly been a journey. Getting the clubhouse up and
running was the beginning. Building on that beginning
is the middle phase. Becoming consistent at each position
is the phase we enter, and re-enter everyday.
I hope this is the path that you all envisioned for your
club because it is the product we knew that we would put
out. Regular dining and events have gone well so we are
riding that momentum into 2013.
The crab feed will be Friday, January 25. The Valentines
Dinner will be reinvented for this year as well.
For you wine aficionados February 28, 2013 we will
hold our first wine dinner. Trefethen will be the winery
and it will be limited to 40 seats. This will be a first rate
event from the wine to the food to the décor. Please sign
up at the front desk.
We hope that your new year is going well and we will
see you around the clubnouse.
Rick Cabasal, Clubhouse Manager
(President’s Message continued from page 2)
“Thank you for doing a fantastic job for the Past Presidents of the … yesterday. I was so proud to have recommended Moraga Country Club for our meeting.
The food was delicious, everyone involved was totally helpful, cheerful, and friendly, the room looked lovely, the greeting on the video screen was so well
done.....I could go on and on. It didn't hurt that we also had a beautiful day. There is only one problem: now everyone in the group wants to hold her
meeting at Moraga Country Club. Please extend my compliments to the wait staff. You all made … and me look really good”.
– Member who sponsored an outside event
This is just a small sampling of the many compliments the staff and the operation have received in this past year, quite remarkable when
you realize it was our start-up period. I know I speak for the whole Board when I say that this level of satisfaction and appreciation is quite
gratifying. As members we should all be very proud.
So, Happy New Year to all! After this fine inaugural year in the new Clubhouse, and looking forward to the year ahead, I will say with even
more gusto …
Enjoy the Club!
Congratulations to our Employees of the Year 2012:
Ramiro “Rudy” Rodriguez and Lee Griffith
Ramiro “Rudy” Rodriguez
Lee Griffith
tennis department
Management staff was recently asked to vote for the most outstanding Employee of the Month for 2012. The group of 13
managers voted their preference, and two staff members stood out above the rest.
It is with much appreciation that two outstanding employees are recognized for the year. They are Rudy Rodriguez, who
was Employee of the Month for March and works in our Golf Course Maintenance Crew; and Lee Griffith who works in
the tennis department and was named Employee of the Month for December.
The two were recently honored at an employee holiday barbecue in December and given an extra bonus in recognition
for their outstanding performance. Congratulations Rudy and Lee!!
Community Patrol
Besides speeding and stop sign concerns within the community the next hot topic seems
to be parking related issues. The club’s Rules and Regulations discuss and encourage the
utilization of your double garages for two cars. Of course it is a moot point for those single
vehicle owners.
If you choose to park in your driveway your vehicle must fit within the confines of your
designated driveway. For those with the short driveways consider parallel parking. So where
am I suppose to park my car if I have two in the garage and one of those short driveways?
Stuart O. Mahler
Public Safety Director
You may park your vehicle on the street. However if you select this option a vehicle may not
be stored on a roadway, driveway, or parking area longer than 72 hours. So keep those
vehicles moving.
For those of you on those big driveways off the street you will notice some of the spaces are
designated for “GUEST PARKING.” This is a 12 hour limit. So please pay attention where
you park and where you have your overnight guests park.
Of prime importance is watch for the fire lanes. A lot of our streets are narrow and have
restricted parking on one side of the street only. This is to facilitate the movement of
emergency vehicles. When you decide to take a shortcut for a brief moment; it could be the
time a fire engine needs access and your actions could create dangers to citizens and property
by inhibiting emergency vehicle access.
If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me.
Stuart O. Mahler, Public Safety Director
EVENING DUPLICATE BRIDGE
Our next evening duplicate bridge event will be Tuesday, January 22nd, at 7:00 p.m. We are now playing the 2nd & 4th
Tuesday evenings of every month, but the dining room is having some construction in the first portion of the month.
In November, the leading club members were Sharon & Dan Flower, Sandy Ruliffson & Dwight Pedersen, and John Greenblatt.
We had six tables of players.
Some new procedures:
a. We will always limit the field to seven tables, because of the space and materials. We seldom will have a problem but in
case of an overrun, we will stop accepting entries at seven tables.
b. Pairs that include at least one member of the Moraga Country Club will get a bit of priority. If they reserve a spot by five
days prior to the event, they will have priority over pairs that are both non-members. After that period is passed it is back
to first come, first served. Non-member pairs are welcome to reserve a spot as early as they wish, but there is a slight risk
that they could be bumped.
Play requires reservations. Reservations must be made by the Saturday before. For folks that don’t have a partner, I sometimes
can arrange someone if I get enough advance warning. We play on the upper floor of the clubhouse. Don’t forget that our
policy is NO PENALTIES, and only Director calls to get help with scoring or helping sort out the easiest way to proceed when
something unusual has occurred. Remember that we have printed hand records which you can collect at the end of the
evening. These can be useful to help remember a particularly unusual hand or to discuss a real mess. Often I forget to hand
them out because I am busy scoring. Remind me! And, if there is a particularly unusual or troublesome hand, let me know
and I will trigger a discussion of possible good ways to handle it.
Regards, David Geary
Mario Correa
It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of
long-time employee, Mario Correa. Mario died suddenly on December 13th,
and leaves behind his family (both here and in Mexico) as well as many
friends and co-workers.
Mario has worked for MCC since 1986 and we remember him as one of
the most dedicated and valued members of the staff. He was often seen
around the Clubhouse cleaning and polishing, or maybe blowing leaves off
of the tennis courts, cleaning up around the satellite pools, repainting a red
curb at the end of a cul-de-sac, changing out light bulbs, helping set up a
children’s event, assisting in the kitchen, and most recently serving on the
home maintenance staff. Always a hard worker ~ ask him once, and any job
was done efficiently and finished promptly.
One day we asked Mario what he likes best about his job, and he said,
“working with everyone . . . all the members and staff”. He was truly
admired and respected by those who knew him.
Mario was married to Yolanda, his wife of 35 years, and has five children
and eleven grandchildren. Mario’s family plans to bring him home to Mexico
where he will be laid to rest. Anyone wishing to help the family financially
with the related expense may make a donation that can be dropped off at the
front desk, and we will see that it is sent to them. Please inquire if you wish
to do so.
MCC will plan a tribute to Mario in early 2013 for members and staff to
pay their respects. Please join the Board of Directors, staff and other members
in keeping Mario’s family in your thoughts during this difficult time.
Turf Talk
General Course Conditions
The golf course received several inches of rain this past month and is performing strong. The
recurring rains we have experienced have made it tough to get on the course during a few days
in the last month.
I know that some of you do not like to see the “cart path only” sign, but during the winter
months, it is critical to keep cart on the path when the turf is too wet. Any tire marks or ruts
caused by golf carts can leave the course damaged until spring, which is the time the turf is able
the begin its healing process. Also, it makes the course look bad and creates unnecessary repair
work for the maintenance staff.
ATTRACTING HUMMINGBIRDS
• The key to attracting hummingbirds to your yard is to plant lots of flowers and provide
the habitat that will give them shade, shelter, food, and security.
• Herbs, flowering shrubs, dwarf trees, and vines all can be used to create an ideal tiered
habitat from ground level to 10 feet or more.
• Provide lots of space between plants to give hummingbirds enough room to hover and
navigate from flower to flower.
• Hummingbirds love water, especially if it is moving. A gentle, continuous spray from a
nozzle or a sprinkler hose is perfect for a bath on the fly.
• Hummingbirds do not have a keen sense of smell and rely on bright colors to find their food.
• They are particularly fond of red and are often observed investigating red plant labels,
thermometers, and even red clothes on a gardener.
• Brightly–colored flowers that are tubular hold the most nectar, and are particularly
attractive to hummingbirds. These include perennials such as bee balms, columbines,
daylilies, and lupines; biennials such as foxgloves and hollyhocks; and many annuals,
including cleomes, impatiens, and petunias.
Due to safety concerns we will not work in bad weather, (rain, winds, fog). This posted
schedule needs to be flexible and we will do our best to keep on schedule as weather permits.
We appreciate your patience and understanding.
‘Tis the season of New Year’s Resolutions, have you made yours? The club offers opportunities to succeed in the resolutions
that you make so they are not forgotten by the end of January. As one of the few private facilities in the area that are open
year round, the pool is always there if you want to start a program to improve your health. If you’re like most people and
you need a little more motivation or positive peer pressure to get your fitness program started, then take advantage of one
of our group programs! Water Aerobics is for those interested in a low impact aerobic and strength training exercise program.
Our excellent instructor Chris will have you feeling the benefits after just one class.
Another option is the Masters Program. First let’s address the word “Masters”, please don’t think you have to be Yoda.
Masters swimming is the term chosen by USA Swimming and just refers to those who have a little more life experience. It in
no way means that you are required to have any level of swimming experience beyond feeling comfortable in the deep end
of the pool. Less experienced swimmers will start out doing 25’s (one length of the pool) working on stroke technique. Don’t
worry, if you’re new to the sport this will get your heart rate up. As you become more comfortable with the technique, you
will be challenged more and more and eventually will be jumping in a doing the sets along with the rest of the group.
Workouts last one hour and range between 2000 to 2500 yards per workout and everyone goes at their own pace. If you need
a carrot to get you motivated, some of the masters group has discussed registering with US Masters and going to compete in
some of the local swim meets. It really can become whatever you want it to be, whether it’s an exercise you do twice a week
or something you use to set and achieve goals to feed your competitive fire inside. Everyone who has made the effort to stick
with it has greatly enjoyed the physical benefits and as we get more and more regulars it’s developing social benefits as well.
Water Polo is going to continue this winter on Saturday mornings. Courtney Johnson, former Olympic and National
Team member, continues to lead the program and offers a great introduction to the sport. Please read your Friday Update
Emails from the club to get more details.
As always, please continue to sign in when you come to use the pool. Even if the pool is empty, if you bring a guest you
are still responsible for signing them in and claiming them as a guest.
Please contact me at aquatics@moragacc.com if you have any questions about pool usage or any of the programs that
we offer.
Golf News
From the Golf Shop
As we conclude another outstanding year in the golf shop we begin to set our sights on 2013. Every
time I think about a new year I think about resolutions. What is your resolution for your golf game
this year? Should I buy a new piece of equipment, take lessons, play more golf, practice, or play in
tournaments? All of these are valid things to work on and any one of them would ultimately help
your golf game but the most important one for me is attitude. Your attitude will be the reason
whether you get better or worse. Many of us have heard the phrase, “golf is played between your
ears”, correct? I truly believe that golf is played between your ears, but not in a cognitive way. For
me, attitude will help you succeed. For many, the minute they hit a bad shot, slice a ball into the
woods or miss a two foot putt their attitude will almost immediately change. Some may swear,
throw clubs, get angry at others, stay quiet, just to name a few things. We all have our behaviors
that we reflect when we are angry or disappointed. But the problem with getting upset and
emotional is that it will completely destroy your golf game. For 2013 try and focus on having a
positive attitude toward all the mishaps of playing the game. For most of us we will experience
more bad than good when we play golf. With that being said most people will walk away from
golf disappointed in the end. The reason why we keep playing golf is to find that elusive yet
unbelievable feeling of hitting a great golf shot or playing a great round. Because these things
happen so rarely it’s important to grasp onto the positives and the reasons you play golf. Have you
ever asked yourself why you play the game? Do you love the search for the epic shot or round, do
you play for the camaraderie, do you play because you like the exercise and just the sheer joy of
playing or do you play to beat last rounds score? We all have many reasons as to why we play the
game but always remember why you play the game. This will keep you positive all the time and
allow you to, ”get out of your way”, and help you shoot lower scores. A positive attitude will be
the defining moment in your road to improvement in 2013.
golf tip of the month
Speaking of attitude, when Walter Hagen was about to play in the PGA Championship at Olympia
Fields near Chicago in 1925, he walked into the locker room before the tournament and confronted
Al Watrous and Leo Diegel. In a loud voice, the superconfident Walter asked, “Well, who’s going
to be second?” Walter then beat the two golfers in match play and won the championship.
The Golf Shop wishes everyone a healthy, happy New Year!!
New Years Newsletter for Seniors
Our season finished with two Senior Thursdays and
what a doozy was held on November 1st. Low was the
word of the day. As they say “Once an elite athlete, always
an elite athlete”. A former “Schussboomer” who could
turn ‘em both ways and boogie on down the super steeps
of Squaw Valley, ski champion, Dennis “The Champ”
Brossart was the winner on this day. He has given up his
helicopter turns on the slopes for a simple shoulder turn
on the golf course. He has even gone as far as a wrist
operation to help with a power draw for that extra edge.
“The Champ” netted a 62 on this day. The fact that he had
a gross 93 and sports a 31 handicap means nothing (The
probability factor is about 1 in 150 to go that low). He
expects to be in the money a lot next season even if it
means having to go higher with his handicap. After all,
after a certain age a man only has so many shoulder turns
remaining. Speaking of skiing, another downhiller
“Banker Man” Ward, came in with a net 64, usually good
enough for the winner’s circle but only 2nd on this day.
His gross was an 86. “Jawbrey” Copeland finished 3rd
with a 65 but a gross of 80. He too skis. It must have
something to do with November and its’ proximity to
winter. Another former snow plow turn guy, “Moshe”
Stroffolino took 4th place with a net 67 and a gross 92.
He says that he gave up skiing when he no longer could
see his equipment when he looked down.
The last Thursday event of the season proved to be
controversial- our own mini fiscal cliff. It started to rain a
bit as the later groups made the turn. As the rain increased
in intensity many of the seniors’ resolve vanished and
they quit mid round. The total pot of $50 was not enough
to keep the quitters’ interest, or so those thought that
struggled onward. Those that challenged the brunt of the
storm thought that their perseverance would be rewarded.
After all, this is America. Alas, it was not to be. Many of
these guys got to this age, not because they ate right and
worked out, but because of their guile (and genes). These
crafty codgers crafted a revised format so they could still
be in “the money”. It was now a 9 hole tournament. What
happened to that Republican group thought that hard
work always pays off and to the victor goes the spoils.
I guess that only applies when it helps you. This has not
been a paid political announcement. And the winners:
1st place net 30 gross 40 “The Apologist” Bill Booth and if
he keeps winning he may quit apologizing
2nd place net 33 gross 36 (some real golf) “The Kiwi”
Ron Mayes
Both of these “MEN” played 18 holes
2nd place net 33 gross 41 “The Lars” Larzoni
4th place net 34 gross 46 Norm “Marvin” Schlansky-
‘ol two dessert himself
4th place net 34 gross 43 “Tahoe Doug” Brown
4th place net 34 gross 43 Jim “Shoeman” Brown
For informational purposes, a group of golfers at this
club, referred to as “The Bulls”, picks the worst day of the
year- weather wise- to play a tournament referred to as
“The Mavericks”. The wind is usually howling and the
rain or sleet is sideways. The tees are all the way back.
The pins are in the most difficult positions. There are no
“preferred lies”- not even any lift, clean, and place. You
are only allowed to move your ball if it is in standing
water (except on the greens) etc. You get the picture. With
speakers blaring the Village Peoples’ hit Macho Man (I am
a Macho, Macho, Man), these “Bulls” brave the toughest
elements imaginable with no whining allowed or “Builder
Bob” puts them in the sleeper hold. Such is the contrast
between us and them. We do not even do rain showers if
at all possible. Our only enforcer, if you could call him
that, is “Honey Buns” Oliver who does not possess a
sleeper hold but instead has sleep apnea. His sidekick
“Buffalo Joe” who used to carry two one hundred pound
sacks of cement like they were sacks of potatoes (as he
remembers it) would be a close 2nd.
Question Man
Q. from L.R. “The Jag Man” I was recently playing hole
#7 and a crazed man was pleading for help from his deck
with a bit of panic in his voice. He appeared to be covered
with roofing tar. What was with that guy?
A. Payback can be tough. Apparently, this “ol geezer”
insisted on fixing a roofing leak to save a buck, much to
his wife’s chagrin. So, when he climbed the ladder to the
roof from the deck, all the while ignoring his wife’s
warnings, she locked him out. Dee went shopping with
the money he was saving. And you thought the senior
men were treacherous!
No story is too unbelievable. Feed me the dope, and we
will see if they will print it. More next month.
