SMGA Golf News On Thursday March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, our 2nd annual March Madness event took place. The weather cooperated for the day and we were actually able to complete the event without any rain. It took three seniors using all of their fingers and toes, to count the number of participants (55 for the math challenged). Three stations were set up, one for driving, one for chipping and one for putting with Scott, Randall and Jason giving great free instruction. One participant was advised to take a week off and then quit and others received useful instruction as well. After digesting all of this information we were sent out to the course to translate it to actual playing conditions, well playing conditions as known to the Moraga Seniors where a 6” bump never leaves a tree in ones’ way. The format was a four person scramble and the scores were amazingly low. Heading into Camp Moraga for drinks and finger food after the round, it seemed as if the team of “Oski” Ellis, “Big Lou” Lebherz, “New Kid” Dern and “Another New Kid” Sly were the leaders because “Big Lou” was heard bellowing “we birdied 3,4, and 8, for a gross 32”. Imagine their collective surprise when they did not get a sniff of the winnings. They were flabbergasted, bumfuzzled, and confused but that is the point of the handicap system. In third place Tom Mortimer, “Shoeman” Brown, the other Brown, and “Ski Champion” Brossart with a net 31. In 2nd place, also with a net 31, was the team of Mike “I always keep my cool” Strickland, “Barrister” Booth, Mike Murray (of bocce ball fame) and Jim “I love the Fat Lady” Yeakel. The winning team, with a shocking 27, was another new guy, Charles Murrin, “Buffalo Joe” Roebuck, and Jerry Ardissone. Congratulations to all winners and losers. On April 6th the Moraga Seniors held their normal “Senior Thursday” event. Most of the allotted times were used so the turnout was good. Tied for fourth place with a net of 69, Chuck Healy and “Slick Willie” Gonsalves, and in third place was Ron Ertola with a 67. 2nd place went to Mr. Ben-Joseph who carded a net 66. “The Splendid One” took first place with a net 65 and he had the gall to complain that he had not won since October- until it was pointed out that this was the first individual competition since October. On April 14th, the first round of the much anticipated two day eclectic tournament was held. Each two man team has to record their one best score for each hole over the two days so day one is an indicator but by no means a predictor. 12 of the 25 teams are at or below a net of 63 with 6 of our newest members among the 12 teams. Tied for 2nd with an incredible 58 are the cigar smoking duo of Frank Coon and Charles Murrin along with Rich “Larzoni” and “Awesome” Ostman. Alone in first place with a ridiculous net 56 and a 2 stroke cushion are Dave Hoppock and Steve “Honey Buns” Oliver. We will see if Steve’s “New True Love” can keep him focused for next week. Stand By. Upcoming highlights, of course, include our “Guest Invitational” which will be held on June 9th. Aubrey Copeland did an outstanding organizational job last year and he promises even more fun and surprises for this year. Mark it on your calendar and be sure to get a partner and sign up! We have a couple of overnights on the calendar where we have a scheduled event and, because of distance traveled, we will play another course either the day before or the day after. 12
MWGA News EAST BAY TEAM PLAY KICKS OFF APRIL 14TH ALL THREE TEAMS WIN! GREAT START! Over the next 6 months members of MWGA’s East Bay Team Play team will compete against 13 other golf clubs from throughout the east bay to accumulate points won in match play in both net and gross categories. For each competition, six members from MWGA form 3 teams which are grouped according to their handicap range and play a 4 ball format. The first match took place at Contra Costa CC where we competed against Round Hill with our A team wining gross, B & C teams wining net. Cheryl Johns and Maura Mendoza are the team captains and they welcome members to join in the competition. MCC will host this event in September. Fran Gentry added to her vacation in Hawaii with a Hole in One at the Wailea Maui Golf Club Gold Course on a par 3 on March 15th. After a shaky start to the first match against Oakhurst at Crow Canyon, the MWGA team came back with a win over Contra Costa at Round Hill. Moraga’s team players so far this year include: Julie Wirth, Carole Pillow, Valerie Robertson, Kati Ehsani, Nancy Daum, Maris Dunne, Angie Champeau, Sally McLaughlin, Maura Mendoza and Denise Acker. The next match is against Castlewood at Discovery Bay.
