Golf News
As I write this article I can’t help but think about all the rain we had in the month of March. Due to all
the rain we had to close the golf course a bunch of days as well as cancel the Director’s Cup. The Director’s
Cup was postponed and moved to August 26 and 27, so mark the date on your calendar.
In case many of you have not heard, Scott Reeves (Golf Shop Assistant) has accepted a position as a
First Assistant at Oakhurst Country Club. Scott was an excellent asset to Moraga and someone that all of us
will miss. He was a big part of the Moraga Country Club Golf Shop team and someone who has earned this
opportunity. We appreciated his commitment to the membership in his tenure. If you did not get an opportunity
to say good bye to Scott please contact the Golf Shop so we can give you his information.
The Taylor Made Demo day was a huge success and we hope that the rest of our demo days are the
same. We have another two lined up and are extremely excited about the new products that are coming out
this year. We encourage contacting the Golf Shop if you wish to setup a “fitting” with any vendor. The
lineup is as follows:
Nike Demo Day, May 15th, Time 10 to 3
Ping Demo Day , May 29th, 10 to 3
MGA News
The Challenge (Men’s Invitational) is right around the corner and something to keep in mind. The Challenge
will be hosted on June 2, 3, & 4. For all open play the course and driving range will be closed for the entire
event. Entry forms and itineraries were mailed out last month to everyone within the MGA. If you’re a
member of the MGA and interested in participating please contact the Golf Shop to find out if the
registration is full. After the first 54 teams are in the MWGA Invitational, we begin a wait list.
May Tournaments:
The Moraga Cup/Senior Club Championship will be contested on Friday May 13 and Saturday May 14.
This is a 36-hole individual stroke play event and we are taking sign-ups in the Golf Shop. Congratulations
to last year’s winners, Dean Okamura and Rick Nedell.
MWGA Invitational Wednesday, May 18th - Golf Course Closed All Day
Rules of the Month
As usual, in the Golf Shop, we get many questions regarding rulings and decisions. With that being said
here are a couple of situations that came up recently:
1. Joe has a ball sitting right behind an irrigation control box (silver box) on the golf course. His intended
swing and stance is not affected by this box. Joe is claiming that the box is “man-made” and is “in my line of
site” so therefore I get relief from the irrigation box. Does Joe get relief from this box?
2. Bill hits his ball into the water hazard in front of #8 and although it’s considered a water hazard there’s
no water in it. Bill notices his ball and decides to go try and hit it out of the hazard. Bill decides to take some
practice swings in the bunker and brushes the weeds with his intended swing but does not ground his club
in the hazard. Is Bill making a good decision by brushing the weeds within the hazard?
Answers:
1. Joe does not get relief from line of site. The only time Joe would get relief is if his stance or intended line of swing
will impact the irrigation box. Just remember that you never get relief from line of site.
2. Although Bill is not grounding his club in the hazard the question is whether or not Bill is improving his swing
path by making these swings. If you improve your intended swing path you will get penalized. So although he did
not ground his club he should be penalized for improving lie. The rule of thumb here is to not make practice swings
in a hazard, whether you think you’re not grounding your club or not. Make all the preliminary strokes outside the
hazard prior to getting in the hazard and do not ground your club.
