Manager’s Report
MCC is really hopping; it certainly was for our annual
Easter Egg Hunt, and petting zoo, great day, great fun for
our membership. Camp Moraga is becoming even more
popular with the great weather days, if you have not tried
breakfast or lunch yet please do. You can also just come in
for a cool beverage and enjoy the plasma TVs; if you enjoy
the national pastime, Camp Moraga does get all the baseball
games in both the American and National leagues.
Swim season is well underway with clinics starting and
over 215 signed up for the swim team. Our junior golf and
junior tennis camps are filling up quickly as well. Golf
course is in great shape and we are looking forward to all
our upcoming invitational tournaments.
Clubhouse project is very close to schedule with second
floor framing underway as I write this article. You can see a
live snap shot of the clubhouse under construction on our
web page at moragacc.com; just click on Live Construction
View tab, the snap shot will refresh each time you refresh the
page. Stay tuned for the grand opening of our turn building
at the range.
President’s Message
Your Board of Directors and the staff at Moraga Country
Club serve at the pleasure of the membership. With over 1,000
members, we have a constituency that has many differing
opinions on virtually all subjects. When our members are
unhappy about something, we usually hear about it. If there
is something that needs fixing and it is in our power to resolve
the problem, we usually take care of it, budget permitting.
However, one of the most disturbing situations that occurs is
when a small group of members has an issue and it gets
represented that “the membership has an issue with [insert
your issue]”. While the Board and staff try to consider all
issues that come before them, sometimes it is difficult to put
the situation into perspective. We are often faced with the
situation that a handful of members will put an issue before
us and we are faced with deciding if it something that the
other 1,000 or so members agree with!
Bottom line—we would really appreciate hearing from
you. While we will always try to remedy situations that need
attention, we would also like to know if you think we are
doing things right. Please let us know how you feel—positive
or negative.
BBBB
The weather is warming up and we are seeing increased
usage of the golf course and the tennis courts. It appears that
our Aquatics Center on Larch Avenue has yet to be “discovered”.
With a large heated pool, spa, and chaise lounges a-plenty, it
is a great place to spend a couple of hours relaxing in a bucolic
environment. Check it out.
Thanks for listening. Don Maddison
Clubhouse Update
I mentioned to Don Maddison recently that I am running
out of topics to cover in my monthly Clubhouse Update
column. Perhaps the reason for this is a lack of imagination
on my part but I think (hope) it is more that many of the
pressing questions have been asked and answered and now
we just wait, if somewhat anxiously, for the completion and
ribbon cutting.
It is also true that the progress speaks for itself. I hope
you all visit the construction site regularly. I certainly do,
every day I am in town, in fact. There has been recent
significant progress in the framing so the shape and size
of the facility is really starting to take form.
Some have asked about the impact of the many and
severe winter storms on our construction progress. The
good news is, there was a dry spell in January at the very
time we needed it which enabled us to get the concrete slab
work done with little difficulty. Slab and foundation work
are some of the most weather sensitive aspects of any
construction project. In addition, we built several rain days
into the construction schedule and although we have used
many of them we are still on track for a late 2011 or early
2012 completion.
Finally, as the weather turns into mild spring days I
remind you to take advantage of the fine fare and outdoor
dining available at Camp Moraga. Those who have been
there can attest to a great experience. Those who have not
are certainly missing out and should not delay to take
advantage of this outstanding amenity. Some feared the
temporary facility would be an inconvenience. It has been
anything but.
That is it for this month. As always, please feel free to
contact me or any other member of the Committee if you
have any questions.
Food & Beverage
MCC Members are settling into spring and enjoying lunch on our outdoor patio. We look
forward to the beautiful weather and increasing patronage, as well as the combination of simultaneous
outdoor events. The Food & Beverage staff is dedicated to providing every member with quality
attention you come to expect during busy intervals. As always, your support and patience are
greatly appreciated at Camp Moraga.
Lunch has become very popular here and many members have only just begun to experience
our breakfast service. We offer a variety of items like Breakfast Burritos, Pancakes and our own Camp
Scramble, as well as organic coffee and espresso.
Our Chefs can accommodate most any menu item or dietary need in creating the perfect dish to
get you through your day.
Members that do come in for breakfast remain frequent return customers and have
provided us with some thoughtful feedback:
“I would like to mention how much I have enjoyed the
always get my day off to a good start with fine food
and very pleasant service” - Steve Oliver
outside golf service & pantry staff
Employee of the Month:
Ryan Kathan
This month, please join management as we honor Ryan Kathan, a
member of both our Outside Golf Service and Pantry Staff!! When
Ryan’s working with the Golf Staff his responsibilities are staging our
golf cart area, cleaning members’ golf clubs and providing excellent
customer service. When Ryan’s working in the restaurant, you will
see him behind the counter making delicious and creative salads and
sandwiches.
Before coming to Moraga Country Club in 2010, Ryan worked at
Pennini’s preparing Pizza’s. Ryan lives close by MCC with his family
in Moraga.
He enjoys spending his spare time fishing with his close friends
and family. When asked what he likes for entertainment he tells us
he’s a Red Sox, Patriots, and Celtics fan. When he’s not rooting for
his favorite teams, he’s catching up on Seinfeld, or watching Good
Will Hunting while enjoying his favorite meal, Chicken and Rice.
Next time you come to Camp Moraga, stop by and say hello to
May’s Employee of the Month, Ryan Kathan!! Good job, Ryan!
Charity Drive for Rescue One Foundation
We are asking every member of Moraga Country Club to donate to the
RESCUE ONE foundation!
We are very fortunate to have the paramedics of Moraga-Orinda so close to us.
These well-trained professionals are able to provide us with the highest level of
pre-hospital care and advanced life support. Our donations go directly to the paramedics
units themselves, providing them with extra medical equipment and supplies, plus
continuing education sessions. Our Moraga-Orinda paramedics are recognized as among
the finest in Northern California.
All of Your Donation Goes Directly To The Charity RESCUE ONE Foundation.
The RESCUE ONE Foundation Board Members are all volunteers from our community. No administration fees are deducted
from your donation. We have been immensely impressed by the knowledge and expertise shown by these fine, young
paramedics! Please help them and your community by donating! A donation form has been included with your May
will have the afternoon session. It promises to be a great day for the team, and we look forward to seeing
great season-opening times from all of our Waves.
Please be respectful of the Larch neighborhood - we truly appreciate the use of this great facility, and
we want to show our gratitude to the neighbors in the area, so let’s make sure to drive slowly and safely
on our way to and from the pool.
If you haven’t registered for swim team yet, it’s not too late. Just go to mcc.waves.com and click on
the register button.
Reminders:
Now that spring weather has finally arrived there are a few reminders for when you come to the pool.
• Drive slowly. Be aware that the Moraga Police Department has been heavily patrolling Larch
for speeders.
• Take your time when driving up to the MAC and take extra care when driving into the parking area
at the MAC. This summer we will have a good number of kids riding their bikes to the pool as well as
kids in the parking area.
• Remember to sign in when you come to the pool. This is important to track how much the pool is
being used, but also to ensure that only MCC members are using the facility.
• Don’t forget to pick up your keys!! Each family is assigned one pool key, which can be picked up from
Christina French at Camp Moraga.
From the Golf Shop
Golf News
As I write this article I can’t help but think about all the rain we had in the month of March. Due to all
the rain we had to close the golf course a bunch of days as well as cancel the Director’s Cup. The Director’s
Cup was postponed and moved to August 26 and 27, so mark the date on your calendar.
In case many of you have not heard, Scott Reeves (Golf Shop Assistant) has accepted a position as a
First Assistant at Oakhurst Country Club. Scott was an excellent asset to Moraga and someone that all of us
will miss. He was a big part of the Moraga Country Club Golf Shop team and someone who has earned this
opportunity. We appreciated his commitment to the membership in his tenure. If you did not get an opportunity
to say good bye to Scott please contact the Golf Shop so we can give you his information.
The Taylor Made Demo day was a huge success and we hope that the rest of our demo days are the
same. We have another two lined up and are extremely excited about the new products that are coming out
this year. We encourage contacting the Golf Shop if you wish to setup a “fitting” with any vendor. The
lineup is as follows:
Nike Demo Day, May 15th, Time 10 to 3
Ping Demo Day , May 29th, 10 to 3
The Challenge (Men’s Invitational) is right around the corner and something to keep in mind. The Challenge
will be hosted on June 2, 3, & 4. For all open play the course and driving range will be closed for the entire
event. Entry forms and itineraries were mailed out last month to everyone within the MGA. If you’re a
member of the MGA and interested in participating please contact the Golf Shop to find out if the
registration is full. After the first 54 teams are in the MWGA Invitational, we begin a wait list.
May Tournaments:
The Moraga Cup/Senior Club Championship will be contested on Friday May 13 and Saturday May 14.
This is a 36-hole individual stroke play event and we are taking sign-ups in the Golf Shop. Congratulations
to last year’s winners, Dean Okamura and Rick Nedell.
Rules of the Month
As usual, in the Golf Shop, we get many questions regarding rulings and decisions. With that being said
here are a couple of situations that came up recently:
1. Joe has a ball sitting right behind an irrigation control box (silver box) on the golf course. His intended
swing and stance is not affected by this box. Joe is claiming that the box is “man-made” and is “in my line of
site” so therefore I get relief from the irrigation box. Does Joe get relief from this box?
2. Bill hits his ball into the water hazard in front of #8 and although it’s considered a water hazard there’s
no water in it. Bill notices his ball and decides to go try and hit it out of the hazard. Bill decides to take some
practice swings in the bunker and brushes the weeds with his intended swing but does not ground his club
in the hazard. Is Bill making a good decision by brushing the weeds within the hazard?
Answers:
1. Joe does not get relief from line of site. The only time Joe would get relief is if his stance or intended line of swing
will impact the irrigation box. Just remember that you never get relief from line of site.
2. Although Bill is not grounding his club in the hazard the question is whether or not Bill is improving his swing
path by making these swings. If you improve your intended swing path you will get penalized. So although he did
not ground his club he should be penalized for improving lie. The rule of thumb here is to not make practice swings
in a hazard, whether you think you’re not grounding your club or not. Make all the preliminary strokes outside the
hazard prior to getting in the hazard and do not ground your club.
Golf News
On Thursday March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day, our 2nd annual March Madness event took place. The
weather cooperated for the day and we were actually able to complete the event without any rain. It took
three seniors using all of their fingers and toes, to count the number of participants (55 for the math
challenged). Three stations were set up, one for driving, one for chipping and one for putting with Scott,
Randall and Jason giving great free instruction. One participant was advised to take a week off and then
quit and others received useful instruction as well. After digesting all of this information we were sent out
to the course to translate it to actual playing conditions, well playing conditions as known to the Moraga
Seniors where a 6” bump never leaves a tree in ones’ way. The format was a four person scramble and the
scores were amazingly low. Heading into Camp Moraga for drinks and finger food after the round, it
seemed as if the team of “Oski” Ellis, “Big Lou” Lebherz, “New Kid” Dern and “Another New Kid” Sly
were the leaders because “Big Lou” was heard bellowing “we birdied 3,4, and 8, for a gross 32”. Imagine
their collective surprise when they did not get a sniff of the winnings. They were flabbergasted, bumfuzzled,
and confused but that is the point of the handicap system. In third place Tom Mortimer, “Shoeman” Brown,
the other Brown, and “Ski Champion” Brossart with a net 31. In 2nd place, also with a net 31, was the team
of Mike “I always keep my cool” Strickland, “Barrister” Booth, Mike Murray (of bocce ball fame) and
Jim “I love the Fat Lady” Yeakel. The winning team, with a shocking 27, was another new guy, Charles
Murrin, “Buffalo Joe” Roebuck, and Jerry Ardissone. Congratulations to all winners and losers.
On April 6th the Moraga Seniors held their normal “Senior Thursday” event. Most of the allotted times
were used so the turnout was good. Tied for fourth place with a net of 69, Chuck Healy and “Slick Willie”
Gonsalves, and in third place was Ron Ertola with a 67. 2nd place went to Mr. Ben-Joseph who carded a net
66. “The Splendid One” took first place with a net 65 and he had the gall to complain that he had not won
since October- until it was pointed out that this was the first individual competition since October.
On April 14th, the first round of the much anticipated two day eclectic tournament was held. Each two
man team has to record their one best score for each hole over the two days so day one is an indicator but by
no means a predictor. 12 of the 25 teams are at or below a net of 63 with 6 of our newest members among the
12 teams. Tied for 2nd with an incredible 58 are the cigar smoking duo of Frank Coon and Charles Murrin
along with Rich “Larzoni” and “Awesome” Ostman. Alone in first place with a ridiculous net 56 and a 2
stroke cushion are Dave Hoppock and Steve “Honey Buns” Oliver. We will see if Steve’s “New True Love”
can keep him focused for next week. Stand By.
Upcoming highlights, of course, include our “Guest Invitational” which will be held on June 9th.
Aubrey Copeland did an outstanding organizational job last year and he promises even more fun and
surprises for this year. Mark it on your calendar and be sure to get a partner and sign up! We have a couple
of overnights on the calendar where we have a scheduled event and, because of distance traveled, we will
play another course either the day before or the day after.
Security
Security receives a lot of phone calls from your fellow neighbors regarding cars in driveways
because their garages are being utilized for storage instead of parking vehicles inside the garage.
When MCC staff observes that two cars are not able to be parked inside a garage we
generate a letter to the property owner indicating our observation and seeking compliance
in a timely manner. There are exceptions and grace periods granted. If you only own one
car you are good, please let us know. If you are renovating the interior of your house and
are storing items in the garage that is OK, please let us know. So if you receive a letter and
there are circumstances just let us know. If there are no circumstances please arrange so you
may park two cars in the garage.
To address member concerns and inquiries, security is in the process of inventorying
common driveways and streets to identify houses which continually park one or two cars
in their driveways. This could be an indication of items in a garage which prevents the
parking of two vehicles inside. If you receive a letter and there are circumstances call
security so we may discuss and update our records.
The last thing we want to do is utilize the new section in your Rules and Regulations
which allow us to inspect your garage with 24 hour prior notice.
Here are some pertinent sections from the rules and Regulations:
E2. GARAGES
E2.1 For security and appearance purposes, garage doors are to remain closed except
for access or other reasonable uses.
E2.2 Garages must be maintained in a condition that allows two vehicles to be parked inside.
E2.3 Association has the right upon proper 24 hour notice to the resident to request
inspection of the garage to ensure compliance of Association regulations in
accordance with CC&R 3.02 (z).
E3.2 In the interest of public safety, no parking is allowed on common driveways except
in designated parking spaces. Parking in the designated parking spaces is limited
to 24 hours.
E3.3 Residents must park their vehicles in their garage to its design capacity at all times
in accordance with CC&R 3.02 (q).
Security is striving to minimize the complaints regarding parking and your help will be
greatly appreciated.
General Course Condition
First off, I must say these past weeks have been a wonderful in Moraga. Everything out
on the course appears to be looking good and the golf season sounds like it’s going to be
busy with some of the upcoming tournaments. I hope to see everyone having a wonderful
time playing the course.
With the peak golfing season upon us, I thought this might be a great opportunity
and the perfect venue to give a few pointers that each member can participate in to help
preserve our golfing conditions.
Ball Marks: Remember to avoid the "pick and lift" motion which tends to tear the roots on
the greens and leads to the dead pot mark. Instead, try to mend the edges of the ball mark
toward the center point without lifting. This motion coupled with a few taps of the putter
will preserve the aesthetics, health and playability of the greens.
Carts on Fairways: Keep pull carts at least 5 feet away from tees and green boxes.
• Pull carts must not be pulled between tees or greens; all carts must stay at least 50 feet
away from the edge of all greens, tees and sensitive areas.
• Carts should never be taken across excessively wet or stressed areas
Summer is just around the corner, which means that we will be starting many of our
maintenance practices that help reduce summer stress on the golf course. These maintenance
practices include syringing greens, fertilizer and fungicide applications and proper
irrigation practices.
Please be patient with the staff as they are trying to do their best to maintain the golf
course. Also, we start with our preventive fungicide applications for turf-grass disease
early in the spring and it will continue during the summer months.
