Manager’s Report
Summer is here and the weather and activity around the
club gets hotter by the day. We have completed our member
invitational golf tournaments with great reviews. Our junior
programs are off to a roaring start with a record number of
young members for each activity. The snack bar at the pool is
now open and the turn building is opening in July. Members
are raving about the culinary delights that Chef Kevin is
creating. The new aquatic center is very busy and swim meet
season is well underway. Enjoy the summer, have fun and be safe.
President’s Message
By the time you read this message several weeks will have
passed since the events surrounding the speaking engagement
by swimmer and coach Kristen Cunnane.
At that time I sent out a statement to all the Members of MCC
in which I explained what happened and took full responsibility
for my role in it. I am hopeful that my statement was sufficient
as both explanation and apology for a circumstance I deeply
regret.
Since then the Board has met a number of times to discuss
where we go from here. As is often the case, adversity can
become an opportunity; an opportunity to learn and then
build something even better than before. The Board is uniform
in its view that such can be the case in this instance.
Specifically, we are looking at, and will look at in the weeks
and months ahead, lines of communication and authority,
Board-Staff interaction, Board action requirements and the
like. In a coincidence of good timing, we will be discussing
such matters at our upcoming Board retreat. The retreat was
planned well ahead of the swim clinic and will be attended by
and feature outside consultants who advise clubs like ours on
Board dynamics and governance, as well as long range planning.
This first year in the new clubhouse should be a year marked
by celebration and not by controversy. I will always regret the
swim clinic episode but my hope is that we will come out a
better club for it. My hope is that the celebration will continue.
And I mean what I say with my monthly closing …
Enjoy the Club!
AROUND THE CLUBHOUSE
Summer is here, or is it? The temperature is up and down
but we know that school is out. There is an amazing number of
kids that are participating in our various athletic programs.
Usage by so many club members is always great to see.
We have seen some long time members start using the new
facility after a long hiatus. We have newly ‘minted’ members
start utilizing CLUBHOUSE 2.0 as well as the continually
active families – adults and kids alike. With 1100 families, a
possibility of 4000 individuals is very real.
We have had a few situations where the staff has asked
members for their account numbers. In some cases they have
not known or mistakenly given an incorrect number. With the
greater amount of people enjoying the clubhouse this could
create some confusion. I’m told that we have 14 members with
the last name of Brown – you get the picture.
So with your member number firmly in hand you have
some additional food outlets that are (or will be) available for
your use. The pool snack bar is available for use everyday
from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. And the ‘Turn’ building (located
near the driving range) will be online and ready for use very soon.
There are also some special events that you should attend
if it strikes your fancy. The Independence Day Buffet and
Fireworks will happen on Wednesday, July 4th. Family night
is on Thursday, July 12th and the theme is “All American”!
We will be putting up a Sunday Buffet Brunch on Sunday, July
29th . The event will feature live music and the chef’s wonderful
selection of brunch items!
With so many terrific options we hope to see you around
the clubhouse!
Employee of the Month: Angelito De Leon
Angelito De Leon
Food and Beverage
This month meet Angelito De Leon from our Food and Beverage
Staff. Angelito, or ‘Lito’ as we call him, first came to work at Moraga
Country Club in 1999 and stayed until 2002. As the new clubhouse
reached its completion, staffing needs increased and he returned to
us in February of this year.
Here at the Club he is one of our very valuable Bussers. Lito has a
great understanding of his job and can be seen in the dining room
and lounge area setting tables and clearing tables. He seems to have
an endless supply of energy and a great willingness to help the
membership and his co-workers.
Originally from the Philippines, Lito and his wife, Marina, now
reside in San Pablo. They have a son and daughter, Conrad and
Aira, ages 33 and 27.
For fun Lito likes to play basketball either by himself or with his
family. He is a Miami Heat basketball fan, and watches as many
games as he can. Favorite foods? Pasta !!
When asked what he likes most about his job, he said the
membership and his co-workers.
Thanks Lito, for all you do! You are a great part of our team!
Summer-scaping. Some cool ways your landscape can survive the summer heat.
Summer's long, hot, dry conditions can test the endurance of many plants. Not to worry,
though. We have some simple and inexpensive ways to prepare your landscape for summer’s
sizzle – and make sure your plants don’t fizzle. With proper plant care and watering, you can
keep your landscape healthy and looking beautiful all year long.
1. Adjust Watering Schedules – Water needs increase as the temperature rises.
2. Check Irrigation Systems – Replace clogged drip emitters and repair leaks.
3. Mulch Plant Roots – It improves soil, reduces moisture loss and keeps roots cool during
summer months.
4. Remove Weeds – They compete with plants for water.
5. Fertilize Non-Native Plants – Follow product label recommendations.
6. Prune Sparingly – Branches keep plants shaded and cooler in summer.
7. Replant Lost Plants – If plants have died or are not performing well, plant new ones –
preferably low water-use varieties – before the summer heat sets in.
Pruning and Detail Schedule – July 2012
The pruning and detailing of shrubs and groundcover are routinely done based on the
Turf Talk
Homeowners
While you are enjoying Moraga Country Club this summer, please keep an eye out for
our hand watering staff. The watering team will be working diligently to keep hot turf spot
losses to a minimum through the summer months. The crew will be using both hoses and
small misting sprinklers to help minimize our disruptions to the membership.
As we approach the summer season, the maintenance crew is on high alert for any signs
of disease outbreaks. To help minimize the disease outbreaks this summer, we will be working
daily to reduce excess irrigation as well as applying preventive disease control applications of
fungicides.
Turf disease pressure is usually at its greatest when temperatures and humidity figure
added together, surpass the 140 mark. For instance, when temperatures exceed 105 degrees
and humidity exceeds 40% conditions are favorable for the development of disease as combined
they equal 145.
Raking bunkers:
Sand bunkers are enough of a hazard without the bad lies caused by an un-raked surface, so
here are some quick tips for making sure that the next golfer who faces your predicament is
not additionally cursed by an un-groomed bunker.
1. Try to enter and exit the bunker from the point that is closest to your ball, but must be
level to the adjacent playing surface. Do not try to climb out by going up a steep
bunker face.
2. Always rake the bunker immediately after your sand shot
3. Be careful not to pull excess sand to or over the lip of the bunker. The best practice is to
alternate between pulling sand toward you and pushing it back with the tines of the rake,
thus making a relatively even surface without displacing too much sand.
Neighborly Thoughts
Stuart O. Mahler
Public Safety Director
Now that school is out and the weather is nice, more and more of our members are out
and about in the community, at the pools, on the tennis courts, and on the golf course. Our
office is starting to receive more and more calls concerning residents walking their dogs in
the community, around the pools, on the tennis courts, and on the golf course. The concern
being expressed is the appearance of folks not cleaning up after their dogs. We all like these
friendly critters and everyone would sure appreciate it if responsible pet owners cleaned up
after their dogs!
Another concern being expressed by folks in the hill areas concerns parking. We would
like to remind drivers who park on hills to curb your wheels. This would prevent serious
damage to your vehicle as well as homes in the event of an unfortunate run away vehicle
down a hill.
While on the subject of parking…did you know the Postal workers will not deliver mail
into a mailbox if a vehicle is parked next to it? Please share this information with all drivers
in your household. I know your neighbors will appreciate this effort by each of the drivers in
our community.
Rules and regulations require residents to close their garage doors when not out in front of
your house or working in the yard. Several reasons for this would be the appearance is more
esthetically pleasing and it does not invite unwanted individuals from entering an opened
garage and helping themselves to your personal property.
way to show mom and dad how much you have learned and in the meantime enjoy a couple of hours
with your parents. If mom and dad don’t play tennis, ask grandpa, grandma, aunt or uncle. Whatever
you decide, mark the date on your calendar and be a part of this fun event. The time frame for this event
is 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Ooh La La, Ladies Annual Tennis Luncheon. It was a rainy Monday but that didn’t stop seventy-five
tennis ladies from enjoying the annual year-end luncheon. The luncheon is a chance to celebrate the tennis
season and to thank all the captains for their hard work throughout the year. The ladies dined on French
inspired cuisine, enjoyed champagne and took home chocolate truffles as part of the French Open theme.
The luncheon wouldn’t be complete without another performance by Lucy and the Racquets. With witty
lyrics and a great sound, they lampoon all that we love about tennis. We can’t wait for next year’s
performance. Once again many thanks to all who helped put on this fun luncheon and especially Karen
Baymiller who championed this event and pulled off a very successful gathering.
Our Ladies 2012 B1 Spring League Team traveled to Round Hill Country Club on May 31st to receive the
trophy for winning the season and proudly representing Moraga Country Club. They had a 9-1 record.
These are the gals who were able to attend the luncheon.
Golf News
From the Golf Shop
June brought us our first year of the Challenge (Men’s Invitational) in
our new clubhouse. The clubhouse did not disappoint. The Challenge
offered a full field with great golf, great camaraderie, and amazing
weather. All are great recipes for success. This year’s Challenge
Champions are Mark Knox and Dwight Hoenig (pictured to the right).
Not only did we have the men’s invitational but we also had the
Ladies and Senior Invitationals, all with great reviews.
ace
The ACE (Attention of Course Etiquette) program is in full swing.
We’ve had a lot of response and the majority of members are excited
about contributing. Since beginning the ACE program, the divots Mark Knox & Dwight Hoenig
have been filled and replaced more often, broken tees are being
(Challenge Champions 2012)
picked up, and pitch marks are being repaired. Thanks for everyone
contributing to make our golf course the best maintained course in the east bay. I’m still seeing
people driving on holes they shouldn’t be. Please make sure you stay off the fairway on 3, 4, 11,
12, 16 and all par 3’s. This will help keep our course in great condition. The ACE program will
have its lesson raffle on July 4th. Thanks to all participants.
July Tournaments
• The July 4th Couples Event: Scramble format. Light Continental Breakfast followed by lunch.
The event is an 8:30 a.m. shotgun. Space is limited to the first 100 members.
• The Ryder Cup (July 7th 8:00 a.m. tee times): Two teams will be formed (by index) with the
amount of participants, Blue team and Red Team. Everyone will play a match (Blue vs. Red).
Each match has 3 different formats. The first 6 holes are alternating shot match play, the second
six holes best ball match play, and the third is individual match play. Point totals will determine
winning team. This will be fun!!
• The Member-Member (July 27 & 28): Net Best Ball over two days. You can find the 2012 MGA
Tournament Schedule on the MCC website –
http://www.golffusion.com/moragacc/login. Log in and look for the Golf drop down table.
Handicaps (The Dreaded “R”): If the dreaded “R” has appeared on your Handicap Index, do you
know what it means? “R” means your Handicap Index has been reduced by either of two ways:
The most common way is by a USGA/GHIN computer formula which at each revision period
automatically calculates the difference between the “T” (Tournament) scores in your record and the
way you are playing at present. If that distance becomes too great according to the formula, an “R”
will appear on your Index. It will remain until your regular playing scores come closer to your “T”
scores. This could be any period of time.
The second way to receive an “R” is directly from NCGA via a letter. NCGA maintains a database
of all its members who play in NCGA Handicap (net) events. These are reviewed annually. If a
player outperforms by wide margins above what NCGA considers a norm, NCGA attaches an “R”
to his (or her) Index. This Index lasts for a year and is to be used for any NCGA events. The lower
of either this Index or your regular GHIN index is used, whichever is lower. This action has no
impact on the "official USGA/GHIN Handicap Index issued each month on the Club computer.
This is used only in NCGA events.
It is interesting to note that a player has only a 20% chance of playing to his/her Handicap on any
given day. On average a golfer plays about two to three strokes above his/her Handicap.
golf fact
In the quarter finals, semi-finals, and the finals of the 5 United States Amateur Championships won
by Bobby Jones, he stood a total of 136 holes up on his 15 opponents. In other words, he won those
15 36-hole matches by an average of 9 and 8!
SMGA
On Thursday, May 10th, our annual four ball senior
tournament was held. Win, place and show got shop
credit as well as 4th and 5th place. The two best balls are
totaled on each hole to arrive at a score. 142 would be
considered par.
5th place and scoring a net of 119 “Effusive” Bryan Cram,
Larzoni, Chicago’s Javinsky, and “Sweet Cheeks” Hamilton.
4th place and scoring 118 were “The B Team”, Boettler (and a
closest to the pin), Brown (Doug), Brossart and “Da Chief”
Tabacco.
3rd place and scoring 117 were “Willie Hayes” Mayes, William
“The Lion-Hearted” Gough and “Gentleman John” Gentry.
2nd place with a score of 116 were “Oakland grown” Bill Anderson,
Orinda C.C.’s Ralph Davisson, Stat-man Bagai, and “Magnifico”
Splendorio. Bill had an all-time best.
1st place with an astounding net of 114 were “The Coon”,
Hilarious Herb” Gindy, Harry “The Fish”(gefilte, no doubt) and
Jerry “The bridge master” Chamberlain who also had an all-time
low along with the most accurate drive). That is not to imply that
his golf game even approaches his Bridge expertise.
The following week, Moraga’s seniors hosted Fountain Grove
and the Rossmoor Relics (people retire to there from here). The
event was, again, a two man best ball and placing from Moraga.
1st place and a 119 score were “Slick Willie” Gonsalves
(closest to the pin, also) and “Two desert” Schlansky
2nd place , also scoring 119, were “The Fish” and “Chicago”
3rd place and 5 strokes back were “Beltone” and “Da Chief”
4th place with a 124 were “Sky Pilot” Everist and “Old Oski” Ellis
5th place and a 125 were “Jawbrey” Copeland and
“Chinatown Ed” Chin
Senior Thursday followed on May 27th. This event can earn one
lots of points toward Golfer of the Year.
1st place with a scintillating net 65 was “Jawbrey”
2nd place with 68s were Javinsky and “Tuckermort” Mortimer
4th place with a 69 was the inscrutable, insatiable, incredible,
Benny Lee
On Wednesday, May 30th the Moraga Seniors made their
inaugural visit to Mira Vista CC, high in the El Cerrito hills,
where the field was broken into 2 flights. Moragans earning
recognition.
1st place in flight one “The Coon” and Buffalo Joe” Roebuck
with a net 125
1st place in the second flight went to “Chicago” at a low 123
2nd place 5 strokes back was “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got
that swing” Amato
3rd place and 8 strokes behind the flight winner were “The Fish”
and Chris “Medium” (don’t call me Lardge)
On June 7th we held our showcase Senior invitational
and we had the opportunity to present to our guests the
new driving range and clubhouse. Everyone was duly
impressed. From the food, to the service, you name it, we
had it in spades. Yowzah! Yowzah! Thank you Aubrey,
Jim Ellis, Randall and whoever else was involved for a
wonderful event. They say that everything happens for
a reason but sometimes things happen because you’re
stupid and make bad decisions. That probably applies
to many in this field to listen to the “shoulda coulda
wouldas” after the round except for “Two desert”. He
accepted his position in the field as if it were a given.
Oh, to be a cell in Norm’s brain! It must be so peaceful in
there. Be that as it may this is the way the cookie crumbled.
9th place with a fine 63 (4 teams tied) “The Sweet Kraut”
Reinsberg, “Frank “The Other Bank” Bonetto, George
Heinrich and “Old Oski” Ellis with his member partner
Sean Absher. Some say Oski has no friends so he had to
invite a member but others say that it only cost him half
this way. You decide.
8th place went “Butter(smooth)” Boero with a 62
7th place with the same score was awarded to Tom McCauley
6th place at 61 went to “Mr. President (past)” Martel
5th place at 61 went to “A taste of Awesome”
4th place at 61 was awarded to Frank “The Coon”
3rd place at 60 was captured by “The Splendid One”
2nd place at 60 was won by the ever positive (about his game)
“Buffalo Joe” who was apparently carried by his partner from
Butch Whacks and the Glasspacks, Rocco Vasalino.
1st place, and the winner, with an all time best of 74, Mike “The
Fuse” Strickland
Another highlight of the event were the outstanding raffle
prizes with many winners.
Quote of the month from Splendo who won the grand
prize of a bottle of 2006 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon so
kindly donated by Harry Fish “Thanks, Harry, that will
kick up my spaghetti gravy a notch."
We hope to see you at upcoming events.
2nd place at 126 was “Slick Willie”
3rd place at 127 were Larzoni and Lee (the inscrutable one)
