Manager’s Report
I would like to thank all our members who took the time to
complete the survey. The survey is an excellent tool for the
Board and Management to fine tune our operation and
gauge member satisfaction. I can assure you that our team
will do everything in our power to provide the highest level
of service to the members of Moraga Country Club.
Chef Kevin has recently released some new menus so please
RSVP in the near future to try these new culinary delights.
We will also be doing a wine pairing dinner in November
which will be a fabulous event. There are still a few openings
to book holiday parties; please contact Ian Cook to make
arrangements.
We are in the process of completing the pro-forma 2013
budget for Finance Committee and Board approval.
The holidays are just ahead, please enjoy the club.
President’s Message
First, let me thank the many of you who completed the first
part of our three part Member Survey. We had a significant
and, therefore, meaningful number of responses from all
classes of members.
You will read elsewhere in this newsletter about the results of
the survey and I encourage you to do so. I will just say here
that we on the Board are very pleased with those results, both
with the preponderance of positive feedback but also with the
clarity of commentary on where we can improve.
So how will we use this information? In the near term staff
will use it to focus on specific areas that need attention or
where quality can be enhanced. This type of information is
extremely useful to staff at all levels, allowing them to fine
tune their respective areas of responsibility.
As for the Board, it too will find the information very useful.
Among other purposes, the Board will use the survey results
to develop a Long Range Strategic Plan, a plan reflective of
member wants and needs and one which can guide and provide
context for future Boards and Committees. Long range planning
for any organization is vital not only in setting the future
direction of the organization but also in providing check
points and guidance along the way. We believe MCC will
greatly benefit from such a plan.
Again, thank you for your responses and please anticipate the
next phase of the survey which will focus on operational matters
at the club. It should be out mid- October.
As always …
Frank Melón
Enjoy the Club!
AROUND THE CLUBHOUSE
Superbowl Sunday was the day we opened the clubhouse. It
seems like yesterday but it’s been 8 months. We are officially
in autumn and we have a slate of club events that we hope
that you will participate in. The Fire Pit opening event will be
Friday, October 5, 2012. Halloween Bingo is on Thursday,
October 25, 2012. The kids should come in costume and we’ll
be giving out prizes. Adults can come in costume too (if you’re
adventurous).
In November we are planning a signature wine dinner with
Justin Baldwin of the Justin Winery. This is slated to be limited
seating, six courses prepared by Chef Kevin and a fantastic
wine pairing! Thanksgiving follows that next week and then
we get to the Holiday Season.
Christmas events for the kids and adults are being planned
and an exciting New Year’s Eve event will round out the year!
Look for the details in the coming weeks.
New changes to the lunch menu are being rolled out so watch
for those very soon. The wine list has undergone a sizable
growth and our by-the-glass offerings have some changes as
well. The next time you’re in please ask your server for a new
wine list.
See you around the clubhouse!
Member Survey
What Do You Think About MCC?
The results are in. We had 648 responses to our survey, a huge sampling from all ages and types of membership. Your
feedback and comments are important. Thanks to all who responded.
Here are some of the highlights of the demographics of our membership:
• 41% of the respondents use the club facilities 2-4 times a week in both summer and winter months. 28% use the club
facilities 5 or more times a week during the summer months.
• 51% of respondents are in age group 45 – 64. 43% have children under 18 living at home.
• 73% have been members of MCC for 5 or more years.
Here are the average ratings of the new facilities on a scale of 1 to 5 (5 being the highest)
There were over 1,500 comments entered, 500 of which were about the Main Dining Room and Lounge/Bar. We are in the
process of categorizing these comments into themes to help us focus on important issues.
There is a presentation on our website with graphics to illustrate the results by member type. Please login to the
www.moragacc.com Member site to view this presentation.
Look for the next survey to be distributed mid-October. This will focus on the operational aspects of the various departments
and facilities throughout the club. Check with the front desk if you have any questions.
Turf Talk
With the cooler temperatures we had lately, it’s safe to say the course is in recovery mode.
Over the last month we have been doing what we can to help the course through the summer
stress. The temperatures over the last week are really helping things perk up on the course.
Luis Ballesteros
Golf Course
Superintendent
The golf course will engage in the following activities during the month of October
• Greens aerification is scheduled for the first week of October.
• Tees and approaches will be aerify during the first week of October
• Fairway aerification and sand top dressing will follow during the second week of October.
• Greens surround aerification will take place the last week of October
Each spring and fall golf courses all over the world aerify their greens, turning what was
yesterday a great putting surface, into sand covered, bumpy and slow greens.
The question is always “the greens were so good why did we punch them?”
If we did not aerify the greens at least twice per year, we would notice a decline in the putting
surface with in a few months. Aerification allow us to perform many tasks during a short
period of time. It allows us to remove organic matter, add soil amendments, relieve soil
compaction and smooth the putting surface.
The greens at Moraga Country Club are considered by many to be some of the best greens
around and we take pride in the product that we offer to our members.
Should you have any questions regarding the golf course aerification, please feel free to
contact me.
Employee of the Month: Lester Rodriguez
This month we recognize Lester Rodriguez from our Kitchen Staff as
Employee of the Month!! Lester first came to work at Moraga Country Club
in January of this year as we prepared to open the new clubhouse. Here at the
Club he is our very valuable Sous Chef. Lester places and receives orders,
prepares food for all parties and events, manages the kitchen while Chef Kevin
is out to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Originally from Managua, Nicaragua, Lester and his wife, Ivania, now reside
in Antioch with their three boys, ages 22, 18 and 14.
In his spare time Lester enjoys spending time with his family, playing golf and
once in a while reading a good book!! He is a fan of the San Francisco 49ers
and watches as many games as he can. Favorite foods? Anything home made!!
Next time you come into the clubhouse and feel like trying something new, ask
for Lester’s special Blueberry BBQ sauce for your burger!!
When asked what he likes most about his job, he said his
co-workers!!
Thanks Lester, for all you do, and for being such a great part of our team!
Swim News
The Bay Area’s expected fall weather has not been a disappointment.
The fog takes a vacation and 70-80 degree weather is the norm. Fall
Swimming for kids, Masters Swimming and Water Aerobics for
adults are the main programs at the pool right now. Fall Swimming is
using between 3-5 lanes every weekday afternoon from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m.
The program has about 80 kids participating.
Please visit www.mccwaves.com if you are interested in finding out
more about the Fall Swim Program.
Masters Swimming has a small, but dedicated group and everyone
who has made an effort to come out has enjoyed the workout that
swimming provides. The program caters to swimmers of all abilities
and no previous competitive swimming experience is needed to join.
Practices are Monday through Thursday at Noon and 6:30 p.m.
Drop in cost is $10 per practice or $70 per month.
Water Aerobics is meeting on Monday and Thursday nights from
5:00-6:00 p.m. There has been a steady increase in members taking
advantage of this program since we moved into the new facility and
we hope that it continues through the winter. After one class with
Chris, our great instructor, you’ll be hooked.
Water Polo, a program we started last winter, is going to start up
again. Practices will be on Tuesday nights from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. and
will focus on the fundamentals of the sport, passing, shooting,
eggbeater and offense and defense basics.
Landscape News & Happenings
We would like to welcome Susan Carey, the new account manager for Valley Crest at Moraga
knows the business well. Welcome aboard Susan!! We look forward to working with you!
Preparing Plants For Winter
You may have heard the phrase “spring cleaning”, but Winter is where it really counts. We
will be clearing leaves and debris away from the bases of plants, especially vulnerable ones
like roses, to keep disease from wintering in your garden. We till the soil once it’s exposed and
add fertilizer to prepare it for next year. We then water like mad, since plants and trees will
need the stores of water over the winter.
For Your Private Garden
You can keep the color and life in your garden by planning fall annuals in the early autumn
and by planting any shrubs or evergreens that you want to establish. Plan to plant them early
in the season to allow them time to establish themselves before the onset of winter weather.
Fall gardening is all about being prepared. This is also a good time to shop for bulbs to ensure
that your spring garden blooms bright and beautiful as soon as the warmer weather hits.
happy halloween! When I think of October I think of
Halloween. We all must remember either rushing to complete a
Ladies drop-in
Starting September 12, we tried something new with the women’s drop-in on Wednesday nights. In
an effort to offer a better experience to participants, we are going to divide the levels into two different
hours. The first hour, from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m., will be for levels 2.5-3.0 and from 7:30 - 8:30 p.m. will be
levels 3.5-4.0.
Lee’s drop-in
Lee has a Friday morning drop-in from 9:30 – noon. This is a program originated for members wanting
to break into the game of tennis or who took a break from the game and want to get back into playing.
No cost is required for this program. It’s a great way to get started.
Men’s drop-in
We have a Men’s drop-in on Saturday mornings for levels 2.5 – 4.5. Summer hours are 8:30 to 10:00 a.m.
Fall/Winter hours are 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. Doubles is the usual, but when the numbers are off we slip in a
singles match. Players either need to call 15 minutes before start time or be at MCC 10 minutes early.
An Exchange with Rossmoor is being planned for Saturday, October 13 from 11:00 – 2:30 p.m. Every
year we plan two exchanges, one at Rossmoor and one at MCC. The cost is $12.00 per player from our
members and that will take care of lunch for everyone. We traveled to Rossmoor earlier this year and it is
our turn to host the exchange. The level of play is 3.5. Sign up and enjoy a day with our fun neighbors.
From the Golf Shop
September is always one of my favorite months of the year, not only because the weather is changing
but we also have our Club Championships. The MGA finds its Club Champion and so does the 18
hole ladies group. The Men’s Club Championship is straight Match Play and the 18-hole ladies is
36- hole stroke play. The Men’s Club Champion for 2012 is Kurt Van Hees. Kurt went through all of
his matches in fine fashion. Kurt managed to defeat the defending Club Champion, Frank Jordan
seven and five in the final match. Julie Wirth claimed the Club Championship for the MWGA by
shooting a two day total of 166 gross. She defends her title from 2011 and 2010. The Seniors will be
having their Senior Cup Championship at the end of October. Below are the rest of the winners in
all groups for 2012. Great playing everyone!
golf fact of the month
Improving one’s golf game is good for business. A study by the New York Times of 51 CEO’s found that
the lower their handicaps, the better the companies’ stocks performed. Tell that to your boss the next
time he busts you for working on your short game during company time.
SMGA
That Thursday that summer
On the third Thursday in August, our friends from the Orinda Country Club paid us a visit. It was a
splendid day for golf and dining. “The Splendid One” and ”Bugeye’ Bagai” teamed up, again, to lap
the field. Splendo shot a ridiculous 72- a one in 4,467chance. Another one similar to that and he may
end up with a couple of broken thumbs.
First place -116-
Second place -120-
Third place-124-
Fourth place-124-
Fifth place – 126-
Splendorio and Bagai
“Sir John” Gentry and “The Big Trojan” Ed Herold
“Slick Willie” and “Beltone ”(can you hear me now!)
Lars “Larzoni” and Bill Anderson… okay, okay, Ralph Davisson (lives in the club,
plays Orinda, mostly)
“Buffalo Joe” and “The inscrutable, insatiable, inconsolable” Benny Lee. In addition they had
“Sweet Swingin’ “ Gene Amato who reminds us of the story when he was playing in various
pro-ams and he was paired with Johnny Miller again. John told him “ I do not remember your
name but I do remember that swing”
Closest to the pin was “the six minute man” Fred Boettler
The following Thursday, the guys from Crow Canyon came by for a little golf.
First place-110 (wow)-
Second place – 115-
Third place- 116-
Fourth place- 119-
Fifth place -120-
Bill Anderson and “The Big Trojan”
“Willie Hayes” Mayes and “Sir John” Gentry who is now a legend of the club. He has shot his
age-doncha know- and he is proud of it! Congratulations!
“The Jigolo from Chicago” Javinsky and “Slick Willie”
“Da Chief” Tabacco and “Buffalo Joe”
Dave Coburn and “Awesome”
On the last Thursday in August, Mira Vista and Contra Costa found their way to the best “in shape” course around these parts
(Thanks, Luis you will always have a job here)
1st place-113-
2nd place- 118-
3rd place-119-
4th place -120 –
5th place-
“Mr. President (past) and “Beltone” (Mr. Statistician, are you sure you are counting all his points)
Johnny Miller’s friend “Sweet swinging” Gene
Lars “Larzoni and Al “used to be red on the head” Simonsen
that same team from last week “The Kiwi” and “Sir John”
“Sir Walter” Raleigh and “Slick Willie” It was rumored that “Slick Willie” shot his age-77- but he had
not reached that milestone yet according to our records.
The first Thursday in September was supposed to be our day to play with the 18 hole ladies and some of our guys had this
day circled on their calendars. Steve Oliver had been doing a thousand crunches a day until his abs were transformed from an
ordinary (for him) 6 pack to a 12 pack. “Sweet Cheeks” Hamilton had been doing so many kettle bell swings that his “sweet”
cheeks could make change for a quarter. You can imagine the disappointment when the ladies canceled. Blue Monday had
nothing on that Thursday. Speaking of blue, that Thursday is the day many of the ladies dye their hair and thus the cancelation.
Our guys soldiered on and we had a Senior Thursday instead.
1st place (with a net 68) “Hilarious Herb” Gindy
2nd place (net 70) “Rhino” Reinsberg
3rd place (net 70) “Buffalo Joe” (he gets named a lot)
4th place (net 70) “Old Oski” Ellis
Next month we will have the results of our Senior Cup among other results. Be a participant and win some dough.
MWGA
remembering two great friends
Members of MWGA are very saddened with the
passing of their fellow members, Pat Copeland
and Ginny Everist. They both loved golf and
gave so much to our association with their
enthusiasm and their willingness to participate.
Pat most recently served as our Captain in 2011
and was re-elected in 2012. Pat’s outspoken
manner was rarely sugar coated and meant you
knew exactly where she stood but was also
tempered with a great sense of fair play and lots
of laughs. Ginny had a long history with
MWGA and her knowledge from all of her
experiences was a guiding light for our club. She
participated at so many levels and her last stint
before her illness was to host our annual Holiday
Pat Copeland
Ginny Everist
party, which she did with her great style and flair. Pat and Ginny were true friends to us all and they will be
truly missed. If you look up and see a streak in the sky, know its Pat and Ginny “teeing it up”.
