Raymond J. Cole<br />

An early voice for ‘green’ architecture, Ray Cole is known internationally for his<br />

advocacy and leadership roles in advancing theory and practice in environmentally<br />

responsible building design. His efforts have brought new thinking, new tools and<br />

standards for the design <strong>of</strong> high performance buildings. In 1998 he c<strong>of</strong>ounded<br />

the Green Building Challenge that evolved into the World Sustainable Building<br />

Conference Series. He was also instrumental in the adaptation <strong>of</strong> the LEED<br />

(Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system in <strong>Canada</strong>. Ray<br />

has served as a Director/member <strong>of</strong> many national and international environmental<br />

committees/organizations and has received a wide array <strong>of</strong> awards for his public<br />

and community service.<br />

Dr Cole has been teaching environmental issues in building design in the<br />

Architecture program at the University <strong>of</strong> British Columbia since 1977. He has<br />

served as Interim Director in 1990 and 1996 and as inaugural Director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

School <strong>of</strong> Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) in 2006. Combined<br />

with the hundreds <strong>of</strong> lectures, conferences, research and writings, he has inspired<br />

thousands <strong>of</strong> students, pr<strong>of</strong>essionals, and allied disciplines. His passion for this<br />

work is contagious! His enthusiastic commitment to teaching and learning earned<br />

him the honoured designation <strong>of</strong> Distinguished University Scholar at UBC in 2003.<br />

Ray Cole received his undergraduate degree in civil engineering from City<br />

University, London, UK, and a PhD in architectural science from the University <strong>of</strong><br />

Wales.<br />
