Established in 1907, RAIC is a voluntary national association representing 

more than 4,600 members—including architects, faculty and graduates of 

accredited Canadian Schools of Architecture from every region of the country. 

It provides the national framework for the development and recognition of 

architectural excellence. 

Membership 

Members include Licensed (or Registered) Architects, Architectural graduates, 

Intern Architects or Interns, as well as full-time faculty members of a 

University School of Architecture. Architects who reside outside Canada can 

become International Associates. Architects who have graduated outside 

Canada and reside here in Canada may make a special application to be 

considered for full membership. A full-time student from an architectural 

program in a Canadian accredited University School of Architecture or in 

the Syllabus program can become a Student Associate. Also, those who are 

involved in the Design and Construction Industry and who are associated with 

the architectural profession can become Affi liates. 

A Greener Canada 

RAIC has consistently led the charge toward a more sustainable builtenvironment—incubating 

the establishment of the Canada Green Building 

Council; and developing the Sustainable Design for Canadian Buildings (SDCB) 

series for architects; emphasizing the importance of life-cycle costing and ways 

to educate building owners about the importance of long-term operating and

L’IRAC a toujours joué un rôle de chef de file pour ce qui est d’améliorer 

la durabilité de l’environnement bâti. Il a participé à la création du Conseil du 

bâtiment durable du Canada; il a élaboré les cours de la série Développement 

durable des bâtiments au Canada (DDBC), à l’intention des architectes; il a 

insisté sur l’importance du coût sur le cycle de vie et sur les façons de sensibiliser 

les propriétaires immobiliers afin qu’ils tiennent compte des coûts 

d’exploitation et d’entretien à long terme lorsqu’ils prennent des décisions 

relatives à la conception et à la gestion de leurs immeubles. 

L’IRAC participe au Défi 2030—une initiative mondiale qui vise dès maintenant 

la réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre et de la consommation 

énergétique de tous les nouveaux bâtiments et des bâtiments faisant l’objet

EDITION 

RAIC | ARCHITECTURE CANADA is pleased to offer this edition of Architecture 

magazine, the fi rst publication to feature its many Awards recognizing those 

that are worthy of acclaim by the profession. 

From its earliest days, the RAIC has administered awards programs recognizing 

excellence in the fi eld of architecture. The RAIC Gold Medal, Governor General’s Medal, 

Allied Arts Medal and Student Medal focus on built projects, lifelong achievement, 

distinguished contributions to the profession, architectural education, and excellence 

in the allied arts. 

What makes RAIC’s national awards programs so unique is that each is selected by 

a jury or “peer assessment” committee. Supported by debate and documentation, the 

RAIC awards program’s goal is to contribute to the development of the discipline and 

practice of architecture, collective learning on the part of the architectural community, 

as well as increased public awareness of architecture. 

In this edition, we focus on the long-respected Architectural Firm Award, the new 

this year—Emerging Architectural Practice recognition—and another rather recent prize, 

the Young Architect Award—which is only in its third year. 

We also feature the Prix du XX e siècle, created in 2007 to mark the 100 th anniversary 

of the Institute to recognize the enduring excellence of nationally signifi cant architecture. 

Finally we laud the RAIC Awards of Excellence—Allied Arts (established in 1953), 

Advocate in Architecture, Green Building, Innovation in Architecture and, recently added 

to this list, the President’s Award for Media in Architecture.

to each year as we strive to build awareness and appreciation of architecture’s contribution

After amassing an impressive portfolio that includes the design of the 

international competition-winning Richard Ivey School of Business at the 

University of Western Ontario and the 75-storey One Bloor mixed-use project 

at Toronto’s famous Yonge-Bloor intersection, as well as winning over 60 

awards for their work, the founding principals of Hariri Pontarini Architects 

(HPA) recently added a precious jewel to their sizable crown. 

HPA, which has a staff of 70, is the recipient of this year’s RAIC Architectural 

Firm Award which recognizes the achievements of a fi rm for its quality 

of architecture, service to clients, innovations in practice, contributions to 

architectural education as well as professional institutions and associations, 

and public recognition. 

“This is an award that recognizes a trajectory of sustained excellence, and 

that means a lot,” says Hariri. “We owe a great debt of gratitude to both our 

team that helped us do the work, and to our roster of clients that let us do 

the work to be able to receive this accolade from our peers.” 

Pontarini credits the tutelage he obtained from working at other fi rms, such 

as Barton Myers Associates Inc. and Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg 

(KPMB) Architects, both in Toronto, where he and Hariri were associates, in 

teaching him about “excellence and how to pursue that in the work we do.” 

From its fi rst major commission—the Toronto headquarters of global management 

consulting fi rm, McKinsey & Company, in 1999 (the youngest building ever 

awarded heritage status in Toronto)—HPA has followed a philosophy of designing 

from the “inside out” to highlight the importance of the user experience. 

“We hope to bring joy and a sense of humanity to the way in which people 

use and live in buildings,” explains Hariri. “As part of that, what’s really 

required is to think through a design with a deep intensity, and attention to

a level of granularity with regards to its use that will ultimately lift the spirit 

of a building’s occupants.” 

However, HPA is also attentive to designing buildings from the “outside 

in,” adds Pontarini. “A lot of our projects are larger scale, which requires us 

to think of buildings within the context of a city. So we’ve always had to work 

at it from both directions.” 

Based on the feedback they get from their clients and the people who 

live and work in the buildings they have completed, HPA appears to be on the 

right track. “People say things like, ‘I’d rather work late here then go home 

and work,’ or ‘I came back from a vacation and no matter how good the place, 

I love my house better,’” says Hariri. “Those are the comments we live for.” 

Whether it’s creating spaces for people to either live, work or shop, the 

fi rm has built its reputation on its diverse practice: the Art Gallery of Ontario 

Weston Family Learning Centre; School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo; 

and the expansion and renovation of the University of Toronto’s Faculty 

of Law; Nike Toronto; a former hardware store retrofi tted into a multipurpose, 

multimedia centre called Camera in Toronto’s trendy Queen Street West arts 

district; high-rises and single family homes. 

Pontarini oversees the large-scale urban projects, such as One Bloor, and a 

mixed-use development at Front Street and Spadina Avenue on land currently 

occupied by The Globe and Mail involving such major Toronto real estate 

investors as RioCan, Allied Properties and Diamond Corp. Hariri’s projects are 

more institutional based, and include the Bahá’í Temple of South America in 

Santiago, Chile and York University’s Schulich School of Business, for which he 

received a 2006 Governor General’s Medal in Architecture as design architect. 

Says Hariri: “Our goal has always been to make a contribution to spaces 

and places, and create what we hope will be a memorable practice.” ■

Toronto. Les réalisations du cabinet ont été récompensées par plus de 60 prix 

au fil des ans et tout récemment, les fondateurs de Hariri Pontarini Architects 

(HPA) ont ajouté un joyau précieux à leur belle couronne. 

HPA, qui compte plus de 70 employés, a en effet remporté le Prix 

du cabinet d’architectes de l’année de l’IRAC. Ce prix récompense un 

cabinet qui se distingue par la qualité de l’architecture, le service 

aux clients, l’innovation dans l’exercice de la profession, les contributions 

à l’enseignement de l’architecture et aux institutions et 

associations professionnelles, de même que par la reconnaissance 

publique. 

« C’est un prix qui souligne une trajectoire d’excellence continue et ça compte 

beaucoup », se réjouit Siamak Hariri. « Nous le devons en grande partie à notre 

équipe, qui nous a toujours soutenus, mais aussi à nos clients qui nous donnent 

la latitude nécessaire menant à une telle reconnaissance de nos pairs. » 

David Pontarini ajoute qu’ils sont également redevables à leurs premiers 

maîtres, les architectes des firmes torontoises Barton Myers Associates Inc. 

et Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg (KPMB)—où Hariri et Pontarini étaient 

associés—qui leur ont enseigné « ce qu’est l’excellence et comment la viser 

dans son travail ». 

Dès son premier mandat—le siège social de Toronto d’une société mondiale 

de conseil en gestion, McKinsey & Company, en 1999 (le plus jeune bâtiment 

ayant reçu le statut de bâtiment patrimonial à Toronto)—HPA a suivi une philosophie 

de conception qui insiste sur l’expérience de l’utilisateur et à cette fin, 

s’exerce « de l’intérieur vers l’extérieur ».

« Nous espérons apporter un peu de joie et d’humanité aux occupants et 

aux utilisateurs des bâtiments », explique Siamak Hariri. « Dans cette optique, 

il devient essentiel d’élaborer un concept mûrement réfléchi et de porter une 

attention minutieuse à tous les détails relatifs à l’utilisation du bâtiment afin 

d’enrichir l’expérience de ses occupants ». 

Cette philosophie n’empêche cependant pas la firme de concevoir également 

ses bâtiments « de l’extérieur vers l’intérieur », ajoute David Pontarini. « Bon 

nombre de nos projets sont à une plus grande échelle, ce qui nous oblige à 

voir les bâtiments dans le contexte de la ville. Il faut donc toujours travailler 

dans les deux sens. » 

Si l’on se fie aux commentaires de leurs clients et des gens qui vivent et 

travaillent dans les bâtiments qu’ils ont conçus, il semble bien que HPA soit

sur la bonne voie. « Les gens nous disent qu’ils préfèrent rester plus tard au 

bureau que de retourner chez eux et d’y travailler en soirée ou qu’ils sont 

heureux de retrouver leur maison au retour d’un voyage, peu importe l’endroit 

où ils étaient, car ils aiment leur maison, souligne Siamak Hariri. « Ce sont 

des commentaires comme ceux-là qui nous animent et nous stimulent. » 

Le cabinet a bâti sa réputation sur la diversité de sa pratique qui l’a 

amené à créer des lieux de vie, de travail ou d’affaires comme en témoigne 

la liste suivante : le Centre d’apprentissage de la famille Weston du Musée 

des beaux-arts de l’Ontario; l’École de pharmacie de l’Université de Waterloo; 

l’agrandissement et la rénovation de la Faculté de droit de l’Université de 

Toronto; Nike Toronto; une ancienne quincaillerie convertie en un centre 

multimédia multifonctionnel appelé Camera dans le quartier des arts de la 

rue Queen Ouest, un quartier branché de Toronto; ainsi que des immeubles 

d’habitation et des résidences unifamiliales. 

Au sein du cabinet, David Pontarini supervise des projets urbains à grande 

échelle et un projet d’aménagement à usage mixte à l’intersection de la rue 

Front et de l’avenue Spadina, sur un terrain actuellement occupé par le Globe 

and Mail et auquel participent les investisseurs immobiliers majeurs de Toronto 

que sont RioCan, Allied Properties et Diamond Corp. Siamak Hariri s’occupe 

quant à lui de projets plus institutionnels, dont le temple Bahá’í de l’Amérique 

du Sud, à Santiago, Chili, et l’École de commerce Schulich de l’Université York, 

qui lui a valu une Médaille du Gouverneur général en architecture en 2006, 

à titre d’architecte concepteur. 

« Notre objectif a toujours été d’apporter une contribution aux espaces 

et aux lieux et de créer, nous l’espérons, un cabinet dont on se souviendra », 

conclut Siamak Hariri. ■

In 2007 architects Johanna Hurme, MRAIC, and Sasa Radulovic, MRAIC, decided to breathe new 

structural life into their adopted hometown of Winnipeg and formed a firm focused on creativity 

and collaboration. 


THE FOUNDING PRINCIPALS began that mission when they incorporated 

the fi rm and used the registration number, 5468796, in the 

studio’s name to highlight their desire to spawn a new era of architectural 

innovation and inspiration. 

Fast forward and 5468796 Architecture Inc. was chosen to design Canada’s 

entry for the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale; has been featured in 

trade magazines, including the venerable American monthly, Architectural 

Record; and has won a slew of awards—most recently RAIC’s 2013 Emerging 

Architectural Practice Award. This award recognizes both a practice that has 

consistently produced distinguished architecture, as well as the achievements 

of the principals for the quality of their built work, service to their clients, 

innovations in practice and public recognition. 

“It’s a great honour and maybe it means we’re on the right track going 

somewhere in achieving our goals,” says Helsinki-born Hurme, who met Radulovic, 

a Balkan war refugee from Sarajevo, at the University of Manitoba where 

they pursued master’s degrees in architecture after immigrating to Canada 

in the mid-1990s. “For us, it’s now about what’s next in creating a true voice 

for ourselves.”

En 2007, les architectes Johanna Hurme, MRAIC, et Sasa Radulovic, MRAIC, ont décidé d’insuffler un 

nouveau dynamisme structurel à leur ville d’adoption, Winnipeg, et ils ont formé une firme centrée 

sur la créativité et la collaboration. 

ILS ONT ENTREPRIS la réalisation de leur mission dès la constitution de 

leur firme en société, en la nommant d’après son numéro d’enregistrement : 

5468796. Ils voulaient ainsi mettre en évidence leur volonté de marquer le 

début d’une nouvelle ère d’innovation et d’inspiration en architecture. 

Reportons-nous quelques années plus tard pour constater que la firme s’est 

rapidement démarquée. 5468796 Architecture Inc. a été choisie pour concevoir 

le projet représentant le Canada à la Biennale de Venise en architecture de 

2012; elle a fait l’objet de reportages dans divers magazines spécialisés, dont 

le vénérable mensuel américain Architectural Record; et elle a gagné plusieurs 

prix—le plus récent étant celui du cabinet d’architectes de la relève de l’IRAC. 

Ce prix est attribué en hommage à un jeune cabinet d’architectes qui produit 

de façon constante une architecture de haute qualité et dont les réalisations 

des associés se distinguent par la qualité des projets construits, le service 

à la clientèle, le caractère innovateur et la reconnaissance du public. 

« C’est un grand honneur et peut-être qu’il signifie que nous sommes 

sur la bonne voie pour atteindre nos objectifs », a déclaré Johanna Hurme.

The voice at 5468796 is currently a chorus of 12 full-time staff members 

who generate ideas at a 14-metre-long table they work around in Winnipeg’s 

historic Exchange District. The voice becomes a choir when the fi rm’s network 

of engineers, artisans, graphic designers, local tradespersons and contractors 

are factored in to bring concept to reality. 

As conductors of this collective approach, Hurme, Radulovic and fellow 

principal, Colin Neufeld, MRAIC, make the front-end design work function 

like a symphony, integrating all systems—whether they are structural, urban 

or landscape—and streamline and incorporate them at the right pitch into 

the concept. 

The great challenge for 5468796 has been fi nding an audience amenable 

to their open-concept architectural arrangement. “We work with a lot of private 

developers who are concerned about the bottom line and who prefer cheaper 

and safer options,” explains Hurme. “So we have to try to do more with less 

resources while still seeing an opportunity in every project.” 

Despite the “widespread acceptance of cheap building practices” candidly 

mentioned in the fi rm’s brochure, Hurme says the 5468796 team always tries 

to include some public outdoor space in all of its projects, even if it’s not part 

of the developer’s original plan. “It’s about making a person feel connected 

to a building, and ideally, we strive to be able to move people somehow.” 

As it turns out, the fi rm has actually helped move people into neighbourhoods 

it has transformed with its bold and innovative designs. 

5468796’s multifamily housing project, called Bloc_10, which last year won 

a Governor General’s Medal in Architecture and this year received RAIC’s Award 

of Excellence for Innovation in Architecture, challenges traditional townhouse 

layouts. Apartments in the three-storey, 10-unit condominium—situated on the 

site of a former gas station—cross from one side of the building to the other 

as they ascend over the three levels, providing every unit with north and south 

exposures. In fact eight of the 10 apartments have views in three directions. 

The fi rm also provided a much-needed facelift to the historic and commercial 

Avenue and Hample buildings not far from Winnipeg’s famous street 

corner, Portage and Main, which resulted in 75 rental apartments and 2,090 

square metres of commercial space within a fresh and unifi ed urban landmark. 

Radulovic outlines 5468796’s goal as seeking to recapture the vision and 

energy of Winnipeg’s golden era of architecture from the 1960s and 1970s. 

“There’s huge enthusiasm in the city and there are enough young architects 

like us around to shake things up,” he says. 

“Every time we do a project, we set out to do something that has not been 

done before.” ■

La jeune architecte native d’Helsinki, qui est arrivée au Canada au milieu 

des années 1990, a rencontré Sasa Radulovic, un réfugié balkanique de 

Sarajevo, à l’Université du Manitoba pendant leurs études de maîtrise en 

architecture. « Nous devons maintenant créer notre véritable voix, pour 

nous-mêmes, et chaque projet que nous réalisons y contribue. » 

La « voix », chez 5468796, est actuellement formée d’un chœur de 12 

employés à temps plein qui fourmillent d’idées autour d’une longue table de 

14 mètres dans leurs locaux du quartier historique de la Bourse à Winnipeg. 

La voix se transforme en chœur lorsque le réseau d’ingénieurs, d’artisans, 

de designers graphiques, de sous-traitants et d’entrepreneurs est inclus au 

processus visant à transformer le concept en réalité. 

En tant que chefs d’orchestre de cette approche collective, Hurme, 

Radulovic et leur collègue Colin Neufeld, MRAIC, s’assurent que la 

conception fonctionne comme une symphonie, dès les premières étapes, 

en y intégrant tous les systèmes—qu’ils aient trait à la structure, à l’urbanisme 

ou à l’aménagement paysager. Ils rationalisent ces systèmes et les 

intègrent comme il se doit dans le concept. 

Le grand défi pour 5468796 a été de trouver un public sensible à son 

architecture d’ouverture. « Nous travaillons avec plusieurs promoteurs privés 

qui se soucient de la rentabilité et qui préfèrent les choix moins dispendieux 

et plus conservateurs », explique Johanna Hurme. « Nous devons donc optimiser 

les ressources, tout en voyant une opportunité dans chaque projet. » 

Malgré « l’acceptation répandue des pratiques de construction bon 

marché », comme il est écrit candidement dans la brochure de la firme, 

Johanna Hurme souligne que l’équipe de 5468796 s’efforce toujours d’inclure 

un espace public extérieur dans chacun de ses projets, même si cela ne fait 

pas partie du projet initial du promoteur. « Nous voulons ainsi que les gens 

se sentent en lien avec un bâtiment et, idéalement, nous voulons inciter 

les gens à se déplacer. » 

Or, il s’avère que la firme a réellement incité des gens à déménager dans 

les quartiers qu’elle a transformés grâce à ses designs hardis et innovateurs. 

Le projet de logements collectifs Bloc_10 conçu par la firme et qui a 

remporté une Médaille du Gouverneur général en architecture l’an dernier 

et un prix d’excellence de l’IRAC pour l’innovation en architecture cette 

année, bouscule les idées reçues en matière d’aménagement de maisons 

en rangées traditionnelles. Les 10 logements de ce condominium de trois 

étages—situé sur le terrain d’une ancienne station-service—donnent sur le 

nord et le sud grâce à une judicieuse organisation spatiale. En fait, huit 

des dix appartements ont des vues dans trois directions. 

La firme a également refait une beauté qui s’imposait aux bâtiments 

historiques et commerciaux Avenue et Hample, à quelques pas de la célèbre

FRAPPIER’S FLAIR BY CHRISTOPHER GULY 


Since co-founding Montreal-based Allaire Courchesne Dupuis Frappier (ACDF) Architecture in 

2006, Maxime-Alexis Frappier, MIRAC, has created nunneries for the Sisters of Charity in Ottawa 

and Sherbrooke, Quebec. “They were the best clients you could ever have,” says the 36-year-old 

graduate of the University of Montreal’s School of Architecture.

PERHAPS DIVINE PROVIDENCE brought him into the world of 

religious communities. But arguably, Frappier has been blessed with 

inspiration in his career. 

One of his fi rst projects involved designing new headquarters for a familyrun 

Quebec utility, St-Germain Aqueducts and Sewers, on a site near a highway 

in Saint-Hubert on Montreal’s South Shore. Frappier developed a building to 

refl ect its function: manufacturing storm drains and sanitation systems. Visually, 

the waterfront facility is meant to appear as a long pipe that leaks, “a precious 

wooden box fl oating on a pool of shimmering water,” as he describes it. 

The project earned him a 2010 Governor General’s Medal in Architecture. 

“It gave us the energy to believe that we were able to perform and do nice 

buildings that weren’t always extravagant, but that were always based on a quiet, 

elegant approach where the materials used and the concept behind the project 

is always expressed well,” explains Frappier. 

Other awards and successes have followed, but he’s quick to point out that 

nothing would be achieved without the team effort of ACDF’s 35-member staff. 

Still, Frappier—who won the Canadian Architect Student Award of Excellence 

when he graduated in 2000 from the University of Montreal where he now teaches 

architecture—has to take some of the credit for the fi rm’s achievements. After 

all, he did receive the RAIC 2013 Young Architect Award, which recognizes the 

excellence in design, leadership and/or service to the profession by the recipient. 

“I’m proud to say I’m still young,” laughs Frappier. “I had a few clients tell 

me I look like a 45-year-old guy, which helps me a lot in getting contracts.” 

On a more serious note, he says that when he learned that he had won 

the RAIC award, “the fi rst thing I did was shake hands with all the people in 

the offi ce and told them, ‘This is mostly a prize for all of you.’” 

In Frappier’s view, “architecture is not something you do alone.” 

He explains that the ACDF team and its external design collaborators 

pursue with a passion every project as if it were a museum on a grand scale. 

Frappier’s passion is his fl air for instilling artistry while respecting the 

historical, cultural and environmental integrity of a site. 

For instance, his design for a new library in the community of Saint- 

Eustache, north of Montreal, created a contemporary-looking building set 

within a rugged, riverside landscape, which serves as a bridge between the 

urban and the natural. 

In another project involving an extensive renovation of a cultural centre for 

Montreal’s Moroccan community, Frappier drew guidance from the layout of a 

traditional Moroccan house where living spaces are situated around a central 

garden. So, he gutted the existing building and created a grand hall around 

which multipurpose rooms, exhibition spaces and classrooms are located. 

Frappier’s originality, which he deploys using such cutting-edge tools as 

3D renderings and video animation, has also been exported. 

He has designed several buildings in Vietnam, including a high-end tower 

for fashion house, Hoang Phuc International in Ho Chi Minh City, and a colourful 

marketplace of restaurants and shops (with a green rooftop housing a garden 

on one side and a soccer fi eld on the other) situated at the base of three 

volcanoes in the Indonesian city of Batu. 

Frappier’s fl air it seems is at home the world over. ■

que Maxime-Alexis Frappier ne manque pas d’inspiration, comme 

en fait foi le déroulement de sa carrière. 

Il a notamment conçu le nouveau siège social d’une entreprise familiale 

du Québec, St-Germain égouts et aqueducs, situé à St-Hubert, sur la rive 

sud de Montréal, en s’inspirant des activités de l’entreprise : la fabrication 

d’égouts et d’aqueducs. Visuellement, le bâtiment qui donne sur un bassin 

d’eau ressemble à un long conduit qui fuit, « une boîte en bois précieux qui 

flotte sur un bassin d’eau miroitante », dit-il. 

Le projet a remporté une Médaille du Gouverneur général en architecture 

en 2010. 

« Cette reconnaissance nous a donné l’énergie de croire que nous étions 

capables de faire bonne figure et de réaliser de beaux bâtiments qui, sans 

être extravagants, sont toujours le fruit d’une approche discrète et élégante 

et qui expriment toujours bien le concept qui les sous-tend, notamment par 

les matériaux utilisés », explique l’architecte. 

D’autres prix et d’autres réussites ont suivi, mais Maxime-Alexis Frappier 

souligne rapidement que rien de cela ne serait arrivé sans le travail soutenu 

de l’équipe de 35 employés d’ACDF. 

Pourtant, il doit bien prendre un certain crédit dans les réalisations de la 

firme. Après tout, il vient de recevoir le Prix du jeune architecte 2013 de l’IRAC, 

qui reconnaît l’excellence de son récipiendaire en conception, en leadership ou 

en service à la profession. Soulignons par ailleurs qu’en 2000, il avait remporté 

le Prix d’excellence étudiant du Canadian Architect à la fin de ses études à 

l’Université de Montréal, où il enseigne aujourd’hui l’architecture. 

« Je suis bien fier de dire que je suis encore jeune », dit-il en riant. « J’ai eu 

quelques clients qui me croyaient en milieu de quarantaine. Notez que cela m’a 

beaucoup aidé à obtenir des contrats. » 

Sur une note un peu plus sérieuse, il nous dit qu’en apprenant qu’il avait 

remporté ce prix de l’IRAC, il s’est empressé de serrer la main de tout le personnel 

du bureau en précisant que ce prix était en grande partie pour eux. 

Selon lui, « l’architecture n’est pas une profession qui s’exerce seul. » 

Il ajoute que l’équipe d’ACDF et ses collaborateurs externes abordent chaque 

projet avec passion, comme s’il s’agissait d’un musée à grande échelle. 

La passion de Maxime-Alexis Frappier, c’est son flair pour déployer le 

talent artistique tout en respectant l’intégrité historique, culturelle et environnementale 

d’un lieu. 

Par exemple, la nouvelle bibliothèque de Saint-Eustache, au nord de 

Montréal, dont il est le concepteur, se présente comme un bâtiment contemporain 

sur un terrain accidenté, au bord de la rivière, qui fait le pont entre la 

ville et la nature. 

Dans un autre projet qui visait la rénovation complète d’un centre culturel 

pour la communauté marocaine de Montréal, Maxime-Alexis Frappier s’est

inspiré de l’aménagement traditionnel des maisons du Maroc où les espaces de 

vie s’articulent autour d’un jardin central. Il a ainsi percé le bâtiment entre les 

deux premiers étages et y a rassemblé toutes les fonctions intérieures : salles 

multifonctionnelles, salles d’exposition et salles de classe. 

L’architecte exprime son talent en utilisant des outils à la fine pointe de 

la technologie, comme les rendus en 3D et l’animation vidéo. 

Son succès dépasse les frontières du Québec. Il s’étend notamment au 

Vietnam, où il a conçu plusieurs projets, dont une tour d’habitation de prestige, la 

tour Hoang Phuc International, dans la ville de Ho Chi Minh, et en Indonésie, où il a 

conçu la place du marché au pied des trois volcans de la ville de Batu. Cette place 

se compose de restaurants et de boutiques colorées et comprend un bâtiment 

dont une partie de la toiture est végétalisée et l’autre sert de terrain de soccer. 

Le grand talent de Maxime-Alexis Frappier se révèle aussi bien ici qu’à 

l’étranger. ■
