Executive Director’s Report 2007 was another banner year for the RAIC. Our membership continues to grow, as do our services and our member benefits. We now boast almost 3,700 members. Nevertheless, with nearly 7,000 registered Architects in Canada and some 2,860 Interns and Intern Architects, we still have a way to go. Also, in 2007 the RAIC was able to add modestly to our reserves with net revenues of $61,169. Our total reserve is now $299,302. A general rule of thumb is that not-for-profit organizations should have a reserve of about one-half of their annual operating expenses. Realistically we should be aiming for a reserve of about $350,000 to $400,000, but we are fast approaching this goal. The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada 2007 Annual Report The RAIC was also able to increase our staff by one additional person – hiring a new Communications staff member to help manage our website, the RAIC e-bulletin and other outreach activities. Our next goal is to hire an Architect who could promote architectural competitions and provide more practice support for certain committees and to members seeking advice. Advocacy and Communications continue to expand with more media releases, more columns and articles in various trade publications, and more newspaper coverage about architecture. We also led some modest campaigns to further promote Architecture to the general public. In addition, our Honours and Awards program continued to grow with two new awards in 2007 – the President’s Award for Architectural Journalism and the Prix du XX e siècle. Internationally the RAIC continues to make a presence for Canadian Architects with increased participation at the Union internationale des architectes (UIA) and more contacts with other international associations of Architects. And this year we were able to send one additional RAIC member to the popular Marmomacc event in Verona, Italy! Finally, we celebrated our centennial year with several modest activities. Most notably was the issuance of a postage stamp by Canada Post featuring Canadian architecture and Architects. We also held a very successful fundraising campaign for the Centennial Fund of the RAIC Foundation to support interns and intern Architects (almost $95,000 was raised), created the new campaign Every Building Has an Architect and tested a new format for professional development by partnering with the Rotman School of Management to host a half-day session, entitled Maximizing Productivity Executive Director’s Report 4
and Encouraging Innovation Through Design – A workshop for thought leaders, designers and architects. These successes are not only dependent on our dedicated staff but also on our members and the many volunteers who support the RAIC by providing the direction and professional input to sustain and grow our programs. It is to our many, many volunteers and donors that we owe our success. Thanks to all our volunteers and members! Our centennial year was a success because of you! Jon F.
