Service. PEG members range across the entire property spectrum and include investors,<br />

developers, c<strong>on</strong>tractors, managing agents, c<strong>on</strong>sultants and occupiers. PEG also has a<br />

number of observers and advisors including government departments, key industry bodies<br />

and specialist technical c<strong>on</strong>sultants. By bringing all of these different parties together,<br />

PEG has become a key forum for discussi<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> envir<strong>on</strong>ment and sustainability issues<br />

within the property industry.<br />

C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> Industry Council (CIC):<br />

The C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> Industry Council (CIC) is the representative forum for the professi<strong>on</strong>al<br />

bodies, research organizati<strong>on</strong>s, and specialist business associati<strong>on</strong>s in the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong><br />

industry. It provides a single voice for professi<strong>on</strong>als in all sectors of the built envir<strong>on</strong>ment<br />

through its collective membership of 500,000 individual professi<strong>on</strong>als and 25,000 firms<br />

of c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>sultants. The goals of the CIC are: to serve society by promoting<br />

quality and sustainability in the built envir<strong>on</strong>ment; to give leadership to the c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong><br />

industry, encouraging unity of purpose, collaborati<strong>on</strong>, c<strong>on</strong>tinuous improvement and<br />

career development; and to add value and emphasis to the work of its members. In terms<br />

of green building, CIC recognizes that the protecti<strong>on</strong> of the envir<strong>on</strong>ment and the pursuit<br />

of sustainable development are am<strong>on</strong>gst the greatest challenges facing humanity. CIC and<br />

its members have an individual and collective resp<strong>on</strong>sibility to advise clients <strong>on</strong> strategies<br />

that are c<strong>on</strong>sistent with their immediate needs, and with the l<strong>on</strong>ger term benefits of a<br />

sustainable approach. CIC recognizes the importance of c<strong>on</strong>tinuous improvement through<br />

management of their own businesses, and the associated impacts of their activities. CIC’s<br />

approach and policy towards sustainability in c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> and the built envir<strong>on</strong>ment is<br />

translated through the work of its Sustainable Development Committee, whose missi<strong>on</strong> is<br />

to add value for all stakeholders in the built envir<strong>on</strong>ment through the provisi<strong>on</strong> of<br />

informati<strong>on</strong>, advice, and encouragement <strong>on</strong> sustainable development. The Committee<br />

works with Government, industry groups, CIC members, and the related research<br />

community to be as up-to-date and involved in sustainable development issues as<br />

possible. The objectives of the CIC’s Sustainable Development Committee are to:<br />

promote the value of sustainable development in the UK c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> industry to meet<br />

ec<strong>on</strong>omic, social, safety and envir<strong>on</strong>mental challenges; provide leadership for<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> professi<strong>on</strong>als <strong>on</strong> sustainable development; provide a forum for debate and<br />

use its influence to facilitate change; provide advice for Government <strong>on</strong> nati<strong>on</strong>al and<br />

European policy formati<strong>on</strong>; influence the development of an industry wide strategy <strong>on</strong><br />

sustainable development; act as a link to key organizati<strong>on</strong>s; encourage research and<br />

promote adequate levels of support; encourage improved awareness of sustainability in<br />

the educati<strong>on</strong> of all c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> professi<strong>on</strong>als and their clients; raise awareness of<br />

funding opportunities; promote best practice initiatives; encourage collaborative projects;<br />

and encourage the promoti<strong>on</strong> and applicati<strong>on</strong> of research results. The CIC and its SD<br />

Committee are also resp<strong>on</strong>sible for the publicati<strong>on</strong> of numerous papers and articles<br />

c<strong>on</strong>cerning sustainable development. The CIC occupies a unique role within the UK<br />

c<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> industry. The breadth and depth of its membership means that CIC is the<br />
