Carbon abatement<br />

<strong>The</strong> impact <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Centres</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Excellence</strong> project can be evaluated by multiply<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the impact <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>dividual graduate over their active career by the number <strong>of</strong><br />

graduates <strong>in</strong> each cohort and the expected career duration. Dur<strong>in</strong>g the study<br />

period 7,128 graduates will enter the <strong>in</strong>dustry. However, due to the attrition rates,<br />

few <strong>of</strong> these will rema<strong>in</strong> active throughout the period <strong>of</strong> analysis.<br />

Figure 4: Career duration <strong>of</strong> graduates actively engaged <strong>in</strong> carbon abatement<br />

projects dur<strong>in</strong>g the analysis period.<br />

From Figure 4, it can be seen that only two graduates from the 2016 cohort<br />

rema<strong>in</strong> actively work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the field through the entire 34 year period <strong>of</strong> the<br />

analysis and thus achieve the maximum abatement potential <strong>in</strong>dicated <strong>in</strong><br />

Figure 3. <strong>The</strong> rema<strong>in</strong>der <strong>of</strong> the graduates enter<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>in</strong>dustry achieve reduced<br />

abatement due to their shorter career spans. <strong>The</strong>re are 919 graduates engaged<br />

<strong>in</strong> the field <strong>for</strong> only one year; 216 <strong>of</strong> these are graduates <strong>in</strong> the year 2049.<br />

Nevertheless, the benefits from graduates enter<strong>in</strong>g the field dur<strong>in</strong>g the late part<br />

<strong>of</strong> the analysis period will still cont<strong>in</strong>ue to accrue beyond 2054 the lifetime <strong>of</strong> the<br />

build<strong>in</strong>g projects worked upon.<br />

Aggregat<strong>in</strong>g the yearly abatement <strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>dividual graduate gives the cumulative<br />

carbon dioxide sav<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>for</strong> careers <strong>of</strong> any particular duration as shown <strong>in</strong> Figure 4.<br />
