<strong>The</strong> demand<strong>in</strong>g climate change policies adopted <strong>in</strong> the UK have enhanced the<br />

need <strong>for</strong> eng<strong>in</strong>eers to create solutions to drive carbon reduction across society<br />

and <strong>in</strong>dustry. As the built environment is responsible <strong>for</strong> around 45% <strong>of</strong> CO2<br />

emissions, eng<strong>in</strong>eers have an excit<strong>in</strong>g opportunity to play a key role <strong>in</strong> reduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the UK’s carbon footpr<strong>in</strong>t by reduc<strong>in</strong>g energy consumption <strong>in</strong> exist<strong>in</strong>g build<strong>in</strong>gs<br />

and eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g new energy-efficient structures and build<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

When I meet young pr<strong>of</strong>essional eng<strong>in</strong>eers, I admire their drive to succeed and<br />

their relish <strong>for</strong> shap<strong>in</strong>g and improv<strong>in</strong>g society. <strong>The</strong> future will be safe <strong>in</strong> their<br />

hands but they need support <strong>in</strong> order to succeed. This starts with the eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g<br />

education they receive at university.<br />

This report makes some important and effective recommendations on how the<br />

UK can better prepare its young eng<strong>in</strong>eers to reduce the carbon footpr<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong><br />

our build<strong>in</strong>gs. I believe there is a compell<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>case</strong> <strong>for</strong> change as well<br />

as a huge opportunity to promote knowledge and build a <strong>for</strong>ward-look<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional work<strong>for</strong>ce. By <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong>g now <strong>in</strong> centres <strong>of</strong> excellence, we will not only<br />

make cost sav<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> the long-term, but help the UK become a world leader <strong>in</strong><br />

low carbon construction.<br />
