benchmarks and standards, <strong>for</strong> the validation <strong>of</strong> new <strong>design</strong>s and techniques, <strong>for</strong><br />

the development <strong>of</strong> robust national policy and <strong>for</strong> the development <strong>of</strong> up-todate<br />

and authoritative teach<strong>in</strong>g materials.<br />

Post-occupancy evaluation not only measures the per<strong>for</strong>mance <strong>of</strong> build<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

but also engages build<strong>in</strong>g occupiers and facilities managers with their own<br />

behaviours and the consequences <strong>for</strong> energy consumption and carbon<br />

emissions. <strong>The</strong> research outputs from post-occupancy evaluation also there<strong>for</strong>e<br />

cover areas <strong>of</strong> human com<strong>for</strong>t and behaviour, and not just <strong>of</strong> physical build<strong>in</strong>g<br />

per<strong>for</strong>mance. Very few research fund<strong>in</strong>g mechanisms presently would encompass<br />

such broad multidiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary research, while the construction <strong>in</strong>dustry cannot<br />

be relied upon to generate such <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation itself. Access to such research<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation would allow the development <strong>of</strong> new research paths <strong>in</strong>vestigat<strong>in</strong>g<br />

areas <strong>of</strong> psychology and social science <strong>in</strong> relation to energy consumption.<br />

Ultimately such <strong>in</strong>vestigations will enable universities to develop materials<br />

suitable <strong>for</strong> the education <strong>of</strong> build<strong>in</strong>g ma<strong>in</strong>tenance and facilities pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />
