WELCOME to the latest edition of our Hinckley &
Bosworth VISITOR GUIDE which we hope you will find
full of useful information about places to see and
where to stay during your visit.
Few areas in the UK can boast the wealth of tourism diversity
which the Borough of Hinckley and Bosworth can offer -
something for everyone, whatever their age, interests and
tastes. Encompassing 114 sq miles, the beautiful
surrounding countryside with its many pretty villages contains
much to see and do, as well as providing the perfect
locations for walking, cycling or just exploring at
leisure.
Whatever you decide to do, our Members will
do their utmost to ensure that you enjoy your

Welcome to Hinckley
We hope you enjoy your visit.
Hinckley has a history going back to Saxon times. The
name Hinckley means the “woodland clearing
of a man called Hynca”.
There was a Norman
Castle built here at
the same time as
Leicester Castle in
order to impress the
local population. All that now
remains of the Castle is a moat which has been
converted into a very pleasant memorial garden in Argents
Mead (it’s worth a stroll). At the time that the Domesday
Book was written in 1086, Hinckley was already a large
village and grew over the course of the following 200
years into a small market town.
In the 17th century, the town
developed a hosiery industry,
producing stockings and
similar items for soldiers and
the public alike, becoming by
the 19th century the biggest
manufacturing area of hosiery
in England. Hinckley & District
Museum (located in former framework knitter’s cottages
on Lower Bond Street) tells the story of the hosiery
industry and contains some examples of framework
knitting machines.
Hinckley also has a strong history of engineering and is
the home to Triumph Motorcycles and Ultima Sports, a
manufacturer of sports cars.

Shopping with a difference
Hinckley’s pedestrianised town
centre has a pleasant mix of
family owned independent and
national retail stores, and
where a bustling street market
takes place on Mondays,
Fridays and Saturdays. Like its
surrounding villages, the town
centre is designated as a
conservation area which helps
to create for a pleasant,
relaxing shopping experience.
Many of our town businesses
have been established for
generations and you will find
their level of customer service
and friendly banter a breath of
fresh air. Everything you could
desire for a great shopping experience can be found
in our compact town centre, from the traditional
greengrocer and butcher through to high end
fashion boutiques and gift shops.
And there are plenty of easy-reach car parks to
choose from (see map on page 5).

Hinckley is blessed with a wide ranging hair and
beauty offering. Whether guys are looking for a
quick trim or ladies have a wish to be pampered
with a full beauty treatment - Hinckley is definitely
the right place to be. Throughout the town centre
you will find a multitude of health and beauty

nail bars, health food shops - even Chinese

Food & Drink
Whether you enjoy traditional home-made pub fare
or a taste of something more exotic, Hinckley has a
wide choice of food and drink outlets.
Within our town centre you will find examples of
culinary delights from across the globe - including
Indian, Chinese, Thai, Mexican, Nepalese, Italian
cuisine and of course good old fashioned and tasty
English cooking.
If you are on the move or limited for time, then take
advantage of our wide selection of town centre
cafes, sandwich bars and takeaway facilities.
Hinckley’s night life is famous throughout
Leicestershire, so if you fancy a lively evening out

on the town we have a great selection of
fashionable and traditional bars to cater for your
taste in both music and drink. For those night owls
and disco divas, there are a number of late opening
bars and clubs in which you can happily drink and
dance the night away.
Traditional Market
There has been a traditional
market in Hinckley for just
short of 700 years, in fact, we
celebrate the 700th
anniversary of the market in
2011 (make a note to join us
then, it will be some
celebration!). The market is
held every Monday, Friday and
Saturday from 9 am to 4 pm
throughout the year, and is
located in the main shopping
area within the town centre
offering a wide range of items
and fresh local produce.

Market Bosworth

Picturesque Market Bosworth was recorded in the
Domesday Book and has been an historic market
town since the Middle Ages. A winner of East
Midlands in Bloom, its thatched cottages, Georgian
architecture and interesting specialist shops make it
a lovely place to while away a pleasant afternoon.
The town is famous for the nearby Battle of
Bosworth, which changed the
course of English history in
1485 when Richard III was
slain by Henry Tudor in the
decisive battle of the Wars
of the Roses.
Market Bosworth is not
much larger than a village,
and thus is easy to explore.
The heart of the town
clusters around the pretty
cobbled Market Place, with
its unique shops and
attractive buildings
including the 19th century
Dixie Grammar School, an independent school
named after the local Dixie family. A short walk
along Main Street, which leads off the north of the
square, will take you to
Church Street and
St Peter’s Church.
The building dates back
to 1325 and boasts a
fine tower and spire. Just
behind the church, is the
historic Bosworth Hall, a
Grade I listed William &
Mary mansion, which is
now a country house
hotel with magnificent
landscaped gardens.
Close by is another prominent local landmark, the
rather grand Water Tower, which was built in the
1800s to pump water up to the hall.
Market Bosworth is surrounded by beautiful
countryside and two large rural parks, which are
great for walks and picnics.
To the south east of the town (and within walking
distance from the Market Place) lies Market
Bosworth Country Park, which comprises 87 acres
of parkland with an oak and maple arboretum,
children’s adventure playground and a lake.
Meanwhile on the west side of the town,
Bosworth Water Trust is a 50 acre
leisure park with lakes for sailing
and fishing. Canoes, sailboards and
boats can be hired and there is a
crazy golf course. The park offers
camping and caravanning facilities
and a café bar, and is a popular
place for family activity weekends.
The Battle of Bosworth Visitor
Centre and Country Park can be
found about three miles south of
Market Bosworth, close to the small village of
Sutton Cheney. The Visitor Centre provides an
interpretation of the famous battle and gives an
insight into life in medieval times. There are trails to
follow around the battlefield itself and regular
special events, including the annual battle
re-enactment, which takes place every August.
Within walking distance of the Visitor Centre are the
Battlefield Line Steam Railway, the Ashby Trip,
Whitemoors Antiques and Country Tearooms and
Shenton Pottery.

Market Bosworth is the perfect
place to browse, with its fine
selection of galleries, antique
and gift shops and other
specialist retailers such as
Michaelmas House, an Aladdin’s
cave of interior design ideas. The
majority of the shops can be
found in the Market Place and
along the Main Street. The
town’s weekly market is held
every Wednesday in the Market
Place, a tradition since 1285
when the Royal Charter was
granted. A Farmer’s Market is
also held there every month.
On the main square, The Black
Horse Restaurant offers a wide
menu choice and not far from there is the
Dixie Arms Hotel which incorporates the pizzeria,
La Piazza. There are
several other
restaurants within
easy walking
distance and an
excellent fish and
chip shop and
Chinese takeaway.
Bosworth Hall Hotel
has two restaurants, Jenny’s Carvery, and
Compton’s Restaurant, which serves French à la
carte food. Just outside the town, at Bosworth
Water Trust, Café
Kouts is a pleasant
café bar offering
views across
the water.

Places to Visit
The area around Hinckley and Market Bosworth
offers a whole range of attractions and things to see
and do. From steam train rides and motor racing to
boat trips, water sports and wildlife, this section of
the guide will give you all the information you need
to plan a great day out.
The famous Battle of Bosworth is celebrated at
Bosworth Battlefield Visitor Centre near Sutton
Cheney, which is where it was fought in 1485.
On 22nd August the fields
echoed to the thunder of
hooves, the ring of sword on
sword and the cries of battle.
The course of English history
was changed that day, when
King Richard III was killed and
Henry VII took over the throne,
heralding the start of the
Tudor dynasty. The Visitor
Centre tells the story of the
battle, and also gives an
insight into what life was like
at the time.
A visit to the battlefield can be a whole day out as
there are several other places to see nearby. You
can park at the battlefield and use it as a base to
explore the area. In addition to the Visitor Centre,
there are walking trails to follow around the
battlefield itself, and the Visitor Centre is within easy
walking distance of
Sutton Cheney
Church as well as
Sutton Cheney
Wharf, where you
can take the Ashby
Trip along the
picturesque Ashby
Canal.
Shenton station for the
Battlefield Line Railway is also a
short walk across the fields,
and runs steam trains up to the
village of Shackerstone (about
an hour’s trip). Shenton Pottery
can also be found at the station.
A slightly longer walk will take
you to Whitemoors Antiques at
Shenton village, which offers
two acres of Victorian gardens
and a tearooms with service
also outside in the summer.
To the west of Market Bosworth, lies Bosworth
Water Trust, a 50 acre leisure park with a lake and
camping and caravanning facilities. It’s a great
place for families to enjoy all sorts of activities,
both on and off the water. Further west near
Congerstone, Twycross Zoo is an
excellent family attraction with
parkland housing nearly 100
animals, including lions, giraffes,
elephants and its famous primate
collection. See the seals and
penguins at feeding time and
take the kids to pets corner to
touch the baby rabbits and
guinea pigs. Youngsters can also
enjoy the new children’s
playground.
If you’re a motorsport fan, then
Mallory Park near the village of
Kirkby Mallory, should keep you
entertained! Regular car and
motorcycle events take place at weekends in the
natural amphitheatre, which allows spectators
excellent views of the action.

On a more relaxing note, the Ashby Canal winds its
way through the Hinckley & Bosworth district, and
offers a very tranquil way to explore the surrounding
countryside. In addition to boat rides with the Ashby
Trip, you can hire narrowboats from the Ashby Boat
Company at Stoke Golding for a day or a longer
break. The canal is
easy to navigate
as there are no
locks for a 20
mile stretch, so
ideal for
beginners!
If you are on a
narrowboat
holiday, then stop off at
Trinity Marina outside Hinckley, which has facilities
for holidaymakers, a restaurant and a hotel, the
Premier Inn. There are many walks along the canal
too - a series of leaflets available called ‘Walks
around the Ashby Canal’ can be obtained from the
Tourist Information Centre in Hinckley.
The Leicestershire Round, a circular walk around
around the entire county, passes through the district,
and includes the pretty villages of Shackerstone,
Sutton Cheney and the Battlefield en route. The
book, with details of the full walk, is available from
Leicestershire Tourist Information Centres, one of
which is located at the Battlefield Visitor Centre.

Ashby Canal Sites
These comprise of several sites on the
Ashby De La Zouch canal where the tow
path opens up to grassy areas to provide
mooring and picnic areas. These sites
stretch from Hinckley to Gopsall Wharf in
the north and are easily accessible from
the adjacent minor roads.

Community Park is a large park
close to the centre of Hinckley.
The facilities are a junior and
toddler play area, a MUGA and a number of football
pitches. A surfaced footpath runs through the site.
There are two car parks situated off Roston Drive and
Coventry Road, access is available free of charge all
year round.

Park was revamped in 2007 to provide a new state of
the art junior and toddler play area, together with
improved access to the site.

countryside site comprised
of a car park serving visitors to Groby Pool lake,
alongside this is a small area of ridge and furrow
grassland surrounded by a copse of trees, and links to
public footpaths leading to the wider countryside.

This open access countryside site comprises of a large
flooded quarry in the middle of a granite hill. The old
quarry has interesting rock outcrops and regenerated
natural oak woodland and grassland. This hill site offers

vibrant street market which trades
on Mondays, Fridays and
Saturdays and caters for all of
your shopping needs. We have
stalls trading clothes, computer
games, fruit & veg, magazines,
jewellery, meat, fish, coffee and much more. Come and
enjoy the relaxed and happy atmosphere and choose
some high quality goods at very reasonable prices.
We have recently added some new umbrella stalls,
which we will be using to add arts, crafts and any other

Situated off Hollycroft Road, Westray Drive and
Shakespeare Drive Hollycroft Park is the premier
historic park in Hinckley. At the centre of the park there
is an amphitheatre area with a 1930’s bandstand which
plays host to a large number of open air concerts and
events during the year.
The park also has a bowling green and pavilion, tennis
courts and pitch and putt
It also has a variety of horticultural features offering
floral displays throughout the year.
The site is closed during the hours of darkness. There is
a car park and admission is free.

Situated off the Tudor Road in Hinckley, Richmond
Community Park was revamped in 2008 with a new play
area for the junior & toddler age groups and a new multiuse-games
area. Further improvements are scheduled
for 2009 to include improved drainage of the football
and the cricket pitch, improved landscaping and further
site furniture and signage.
The Park is free of charge and open all year round with
parking available during daylight hours.

Swallows Green Community Park was improved in
2005/2006 to include a new play area for the toddler
age group. Further junior and teenage play equipment
and improvements to the multi-use-games-area have
also took place.
The site is also the home of Hinckley Cricket Club, is
open all year and access is free of charge.
