Welcome to
London’s
Arcadia
Richmond upon Thames lies 15 miles
southwest of central London yet a fast
train form Waterloo Station will take you
here in 15 minutes. When you arrive you
will emerge into a different world.
Defi ned by the Thames with over 21 miles
of riverside we are without doubt the most
beautiful of the capitals 32 boroughs. It is
with good reason that we are known as
London’s Arcadia.
We really have something for everyone.
Our towns are vibrant and stylish with
great places to eat, shop, drink and
generally have a good time. Our parks
and open spaces are internationally
renowned and we have other world-class
destinations such as Hampton Court
Palace and the Royal Botanic Gardens at
Kew which this year celebrates its 250th
anniversary. The London Wetland Centre
Cllr Serge Lourie
in Barnes is an oasis of peace and a
haven for wildlife close to the heart of
the capital while Twickenham Stadium,
the home of England Rugby has a
fantastic visitors centre which is open
all year round.
I am extremely honoured to be Leader
of this beautiful borough. Our aim at the
Town Hall is to preserve and improve it for
everyone. Top of our agenda is protecting
the environment and fi ghting climate
change. Through our various policies
we are setting an example of what local
government can do nationally to ensure a
greener and more sustainable future.
I extend our warmest welcome and hope
you will enjoy your visit.
Whether truly royal or simply
with 17th-century charm (and, it’s
regal, Richmond upon Thames reported, a few ghosts) to Marble
is a treasure trove of stunning Hill House, a magnificent gift
architecture steeped in history. from King George II to his clever
While Hampton Court Palace, mistress, Henrietta Howard, there
historic gems
the renowned playground of
King Henry VIII, and its glorious
grounds and mind-boggling
outdoor maze are a sight
not-to-be-missed, the borough
is also home to hidden gems of
history. Nearby attractions such
as Osterley Park, Chiswick House,
York House and Syon House, as
well as recently-restored Kew
Palace, will provide days of fun
and learning. From Ham House, a
500-year-old Stuart House on the
banks of the Thames, brimming
to be found. So satisfy the history
buff in you (or your family) with
regal sights that don’t have a royal
Richmond Cemetary
Remembering the past becomes
a fascinating experience in
Richmond upon Thames. A visit to
the Poppy Factory in Petersham
Road will take you behind the
scenes of an operation that
produces 38 million remembrance
poppies a year in honour and
tomb in the shape of an Arab
tent, who lies in the cemetery of
the Church of St. Mary Magdalen
in North Worple Way – and the
area’s rich heritage of sport is not
missed out either. The grave of
Ebenezer Cobb Morley, founder
and first secretary of the Football
tombs and history…
memory of the country’s service
men and women, complete with a
guided tour and tea and biscuits.
The borough’s military history can
also be explored in its cemeteries,
the final resting place for seven
Victoria Cross holders. Explorers
themselves rest in Richmond’s
burial grounds – including Sir
Richard Burton, whose grave
is accompanied by a sculpted
Association, lies quietly hidden
in Barnes. Even beyond the
former glory of their inhabitants,
the borough’s cemeteries offer
pastoral surroundings and a
peaceful getaway, and a stop in
won’t leave you disappointed.
When you are looking for a place to
stay, you need a rating system you
can trust. The Quality in Tourism (QiT)
ratings are your clear guide to what to
expect, in an easy-to-understand form.
Properties are visited annually by trained,
impartial assessors so you can have
confidence that your accommodation has
been thoroughly checked and rated for
quality before you make a booking.
Hotels are given a rating from one to five stars
- the more stars, the higher the quality and the
greater the range of facilities and level of services
provided.
to book the accommodation that meets your
expectations. All accommodation in this guide
has been assessed by Quality in Tourism and is
rated accordingly. The exception is properties that
are marked “QiT applied”. These properties have
applied to be rated and at the time of the guide
going to print were awaiting their assessment.
The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames
VisitRichmond cannot accept any responsibility for
the quality of this accommodation.
Booking accommodation in Richmond upon
Thames. Just contact the Richmond Information
Centre (RIC) by telephone, email or in person and
tell them when you want to stay and how much
you want to pay. They will do the rest! You can also
accommodation info
Guest accommodation, which includes
guesthouses, bed and breakfasts, inns and
farmhouses, is rated from one to five diamonds and
stars. The same minimum requirements for facilities
and services apply to all guest accommodation
from one to five diamonds. Progressively
higher levels of quality and customer care must
be provided for each of the one to five
diamond ratings.
Self-catering establishments are rated from
one to five stars. The more stars awarded to an
establishment, the higher levels of quality you can
expect. Establishments at higher rating levels also
have to meet some additional requirements for
facilities. Quality in Tourism ratings are your sign
of quality assurance, giving you the confidence
book your accommodation online through the RIC
by visiting the website below. For all bookings a £3
booking fee is charged. A 10% deposit (of the first
night’s stay) towards the cost of accommodation
is also charged which will be deducted from
your account by the accommodation at which
you stay. If you’re booking over the telephone or on
the internet, please make sure you have your credit/
debit card details ready. For the latest information
