Bradford 05
Be impressed by the striking
architecture, the modern bars
and restaurants, and the
many museums, galleries and
events which make Bradford
a must-see destination.
The Alhambra Theatre
National Media Museum
Surrounded by beautiful rolling hills and moors,
historic towns and villages, Bradford is the perfect
base for exploring Yorkshire.
During Victorian times the city was considered to
be the Wool Capital of the World due to the city’s
prosperous mills. This industrial history is still evident
today in the striking architecture found throughout
the city. Visit the Bradford Industrial Museum to learn
more about Bradford’s past or discover Bradford
Cathedral, the city’s oldest place of worship.
Bradford is not only full of history but culture too,
with its many museums, galleries and festivals.
The National Media Museum (formerly the National
Museum of Photography, Film and Television) is
one of Britain’s most popular museums. It has five
floors of interactive exhibitions, three film festivals
and three cinemas, including the impressive
IMAX screen.
A short walk from the National Media Museum are
Bradford’s latest cultural offerings, the Impressions
Gallery and Bradford 1 Gallery. They have changing
programmes of photography and art.
Throughout the year the district has a varied events
programme. Whether you’re interested in music, film,
books or live acts, there’s something to interest you.
The Bradford Mela is one of the highlights of the
annual events calendar, bringing the sights and
sounds of Asia to the city.
Bradford is also a great place for a night out,
particularly if you enjoy your food and drink.
The city has some fantastic restaurants and was
awarded Super City Status in the recent Curry
Capital awards.
An evening at the theatre is also to be
recommended. The magnificent Edwardian
Alhambra Theatre regularly attracts West End
shows and national touring companies.
Discover not only a UNESCO
World Heritage Site but one
of the largest collections of
art by Bradford-born artist
David Hockney. We’re sure
you’ll be impressed by what
Saltaire and Airedale has
to offer.
Saltaire United Reformed Church
Salts Mill
The picturesque village of Saltaire is a UNESCO
World Heritage Site due to its preservation as a
model Victorian village. Sir Titus Salt built the village
to house his mill workers who worked in Salts Mill, a
magnificent structure which dominates this historic
village. Sir Titus was buried in Saltaire United
Reformed Church, an architectural gem with Grade
1 listed status.
Today Salts Mill is a celebrated art gallery, home to
one of the largest collections of work by Bradfordborn
artist David Hockney. The mill also houses
boutique shops and restaurants, including the
popular Salts Diner – perfect for a day out.
Nearby is the Leeds-Liverpool Canal, the longest
canal in northern England and an ideal place for a
bike ride or a stroll. Look out for Five Rise Locks, an
impressive series of locks built in the 17th century to
allow canal boats to descend 60 feet and continue
their journeys.
Alternatively visit the Bracken Hall Countryside
Centre which has beautiful gardens, nature exhibits
and educational walks and workshops for children.
A great time to visit Saltaire is during September
when the Saltaire Festival brings live music,
exhibitions, street performances and local produce
markets to the village. In fact, there are lots of
events throughout the year including the Bingley
Show, one of the biggest one-day agricultural shows
in the country.
Brontë Parsonage Museum
Main Street, Haworth
Bradford District 2008

Brontë Country 09
Standing amid the brooding
Pennine moors at the heart
of Brontë Country, Haworth
is both home to the world’s
second most-visited literary
shrine and a stop on one
of Britain’s best-preserved
steam railways.
Rough, brooding moorland surrounds the charming
village of Haworth, made famous by its former
residents, the Brontës. The village is not only home
to the Brontë Parsonage Museum but many other
attractions including a steam railway, stately homes
and excellent shops and restaurants.
Haworth Parsonage, now the Brontë Parsonage
Museum, was home to the literary sisters from 1820
to 1861. It was here that Charlotte wrote Jane Eyre,
Emily created Wuthering Heights and Anne penned
The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. Today the museum
remains as it would have been in their day and
contains a vast array of the Brontës’ possessions
and artefacts.
Another great way to spend an afternoon is to take
a steam train ride on the Keighley & Worth Valley
Railway. This popular steam railway runs regular
services from Keighley to Oxenhope through the
beautiful countryside of Brontë Country.
For those who like to get outdoors there are
endless opportunities to discover Brontë Country.
From the challenging 40-mile Brontë Way to the
gentler five-mile walk to the Brontë Falls, there are
walks for all abilities.
Haworth village also has a varied events
programme, including popular Victorian events
in the run-up to Christmas. Watch the traditional
custom of Scroggling the Holly in November, an
ancient festival which invites the spirit of Christmas
to Haworth, or join the Torchlight Procession
in December.
White Wells
elegant tree-lined streets and the dramatic
background of Ilkley Moor. This picturesque town
is ideal for a short break, particularly for those who
enjoy the outdoors. As well as the beautiful
Ilkley Moor was once home to prehistoric man,
evident by the carved rocks found on the moor.
marks, dating from the Early Bronze Age. Take a
admire the views.
In fact there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy
the outdoors around Ilkley. Rock climbers will
waters. You can still visit White Wells when the
flags are flying from its popular café.
The Manor House is also worth a visit, with its
local history display and changing exhibitions.
The town is also home to several popular festivals,
including the Ilkley Summer Festival in August and
the Ilkley Literature Festival, the north of England’s
largest literature festival, in September and
October. Celebrities from the worlds of
entertainment and literature fill the line-up at the
latter for a fortnight of discussions, workshops,
readings and performances.
Whatever else you choose to do in Ilkley, you’ll be
impressed with the choice of cafés, restaurants
and bars. Everything from good pub food to
Accommodation 23
Accommodation
Within Bradford district you will find a variety of holiday
accommodation to suit your individual requirements – from
farmhouses to major hotels, campsites to family run B&Bs.
When you are looking for a place to stay you need a rating
system you can trust. VisitBritain’s ratings are your clear guide
to what to expect, in an easy to understand form. Properties
are visited annually by trained, impartial assessors so you can
be confident that your accommodation has been thoroughly
checked and rated for quality before you make a booking.
Properties advertised in this guide are inspected by either
Quality in Tourism on behalf of VisitBritain and/or the AA.
If you would like further information on the grading scheme or
additional awards not mentioned in this guide please contact
Quality in Tourism: 0845 300 6996 or the AA:
01256 844455.
All the national bodies (VisitBritain and the AA) now assess
hotels and guest accommodation (including B&Bs) to the same
criteria and award one to five stars. The star ratings reflect the
overall quality of the experience.
For serviced accommodation there are two separate schemes
– one for hotels and one for guest accommodation.
Hotels have to be licensed, offer dinner at least five nights a
week (unless categorised as a Metro Hotel) and have all rooms
ensuite or with private bathrooms.
The different hotel categories are: Hotel, Small Hotel,
Country House Hotel, Metro Hotel, Town House Hotel
and Budget Hotel.
Guest accommodation categories are: Guest
Accommodation, Bed and Breakfasts, Guest Houses,
Inns, Farmhouses and Restaurants with Rooms. Tend to
be personally run by the owners.
Gold and Silver awards for hotels and guest
accommodation: Silver awards recognise exceptional
quality at all levels and Gold awards are given to the ‘best
of the best’.
Stars for self-catering: The layout and design of the
accommodation and the range and quality of the kitchen
equipment is assessed, as well as the quality and comfort
of the bedrooms and bathrooms and, most importantly,
the cleanliness.
Hostels: These provide safe, budget-priced
accommodation for young people, families and
larger groups and are star-rated. Higher rated
accommodation often provides ensuite rooms.
Caravan,Touring and Camping Parks: Star ratings
reflect the overall quality of the park. The ratings are
awarded, based on cleanliness, environment and the
standard of facilities and service provided.
If you choose to stay in any of EnjoyEngland’s quality-assessed
accommodation, you can be confident that it has been checked
out before you check in. For more information on the
