782. She had entrusted her sister Umm al-FaQ.l with her affairs; she, being<br />

married to al-'Abbas, confided the matter to him, and he married her to the<br />

apostle in Mecca and gave her as dowry on the apostle's behalf 400 dirhams.<br />

783. God sent down to him-so Abu "Ubayda told me-'God has fulfilled<br />

the vision in reality to His apostle, "You shall enter the sacred mosque if God<br />

will in safety with heads shaved and (hair) shorn, not fearing". He knows<br />

what you do not know, and He has wrought besides that a victory near by'<br />

(48. 27), i.e. Khaybar.<br />

784. Some authorities on poetry quoted the verses to me thus:<br />

You are the apostle and he who is deprived <strong>of</strong> his gifts<br />

And the sight <strong>of</strong> him has no real worth.<br />

May God confirm the good things He gave you<br />

Among the apostles, and the victory as they were helped.<br />

I perceived goodness in you by a natural gift,<br />

An intuition which is contrary to what they think <strong>of</strong> you,<br />

meaning the polytheists.<br />

785. Another reading is:<br />

We urged on our horses from the thickets <strong>of</strong> QurQ.<br />

[This "is the reading <strong>of</strong> T. 1212, 1. 9 and Yaq. iv. 53, 1. 22, who safs that<br />

QurQ is in the Wadi'l-Qura. I.I.'s reading is given in Yaq. iv. 57I.] The<br />

words 'We arranged their bridles' are not from I.I.<br />

786. Others say 'Ubiida b. Malik.<br />

787. A traditionist whom 1 trust told me that Ja'far took the flag in his right<br />

hand and it was cut <strong>of</strong>f; then he held it in his left hand and that was cut <strong>of</strong>f;<br />

then he held it to his breast with his arms until he was slain. He was 33<br />

years old. For that God rewarded him with a pair <strong>of</strong> wings in Paradise with<br />

which he flew whither he would. It is said· that a Greek gave him a blow<br />

which cut him asunder.<br />

788. Another reading is 40 skins (manta).<br />

789. The words 1. al-Trash are not from I.1. The third verse is from Khallad<br />

b. Qurra: others say Malik b. Rafila.<br />

790. AI-Zuhri according to our information said that the Muslims made<br />

Khalid their chief and God helped them, and he was in charge <strong>of</strong> them until<br />

he came back to the prophet.<br />

'Amr.<br />

792. The poem is ascribed to J:Iabib b. 'Abdullah al-A'lam al-Hudhali, and<br />

the verse '1 remembered the ancient blood-feud' is from Abu 'Ubayda, also<br />

the words 'wide-nostrilled' and 'strong, lean-flanked', &c.<br />
