From Saba' who dwelt in ~Iarib when<br />

They built dams against its torrent.<br />

This verse occurs in a poem <strong>of</strong> his, but it is also attributed to al-Nabigah<br />

al-]a'd"i whose name was Qays b. 'Abdullah, one <strong>of</strong> B. Ja'da b. Ka'b b.<br />

Rabi'a b. 'Amir b. $a'$3'a b. Mu'awiya b. Bakr b. Hawiizin. But this is a<br />

long story which I am compelled to cut short for the reasons I have already<br />

given. I<br />

T 909 (Before that a soothsayer ShiHi' b. Kulayb al-Sadafi: had come to Tubba'<br />

and lived with him and \vhen he wished to bid him farewell Tubba' asked<br />

him whether he had anything <strong>of</strong> importance to communicate, and in the<br />

customary rhymes <strong>of</strong> sal' he told him in reply to the question whether any<br />

king would fight with Tubba', 'No, but the king <strong>of</strong> Ghassan had a son whose<br />

kingdom would be surpassed by a man <strong>of</strong>great piety, helped by the Almighty,<br />

described in the psalms; his people would be favoured by revelation, he<br />

would dispel darkness by light, Al)mad the prophet. How blessed his people<br />

when he comes, one <strong>of</strong> the sons <strong>of</strong> Lu'ayy <strong>of</strong> B. Qu~ayy!' Tubba' sent for a<br />

copy <strong>of</strong> the psalms, examined them, and found the description <strong>of</strong> the prophet.<br />

Ibn Isl)aq gleaned and assembled the following traditions from what<br />

Sa'id b. Jubayr told him from 1. 'Abbas and some learned Yamani tradi~<br />

tionist: A Lakhrnid king was in Yarnan in the territory <strong>of</strong> the Tubba
