HERE‟S HOW TO GET THE MOST ENJOYMENT FROM THE DRIFT ROSES
THAT YOU ORDERED FROM COTTAGE FARMS
Created in response to increased consumer demand for smaller, everblooming
plants, Drift® Roses fit a special niche in the shrub rose market. Drift® Roses are a
cross between full-size groundcover roses and miniatures. From the former they
kept toughness, disease resistance and winter hardiness. From the miniatures, they
inherited their well-managed size and repeat-blooming nature. The low, spreading
habit of Drift® Roses makes them perfect for small gardens and combination
planters. Drift Roses® complement any garden and any style in any landscape. They
brighten up borders, fill in empty spaces, and spread delicately around your
favorite established plants. Also ideal when grown in containers for the deck or
patio. Continuously blooming from spring to early frost, Drift® Roses are naturally
dwarf, with very attractive foliage.
QUICK REFERENCE PLANTING GUIDE
1. Location- Full sun (or at least six hours of direct sun).
2. Hardiness-Thrive from zone 5 to 10. Below 5 plant in containers that can be
brought indoor over the winter….and remember, below zone 5 plant on the
South facing side of your home‟s foundation in full to part sun and these
„cuties‟ can increase their hardiness range by 1 or 2 zones.
3. Planting Distance- 2-3‟ apart
4. Mature Height- 18-24” the first year with very dense plants with a similar
width by the second year.
5. Bloom Time-Many may be blooming in their pots upon arrival and
thereafter continue their annual display from summer until first fall frost
6. To Plant- Dig a hole at least twice the size of the pot in which your Drift
Roses are growing. Partially backfill the hole, remove your Mini Roses from
its pot, and carefully position the root ball in the hole. The top of the root
ball should be level with the soil surface. Refill the hole with soil, firming the
soil around the plant with your fingers. Check to be sure that the plant is not
planted too deep. If it is, raise the plant gently and re-firm the soil. Water
thoroughly. Water as needed until the plants are established.

SOIL PREPARATION
Although Drift Roses will do well in average soil, for optimum results you can
improve your soil as follows:
1. Thoroughly spade or till the soil to a depth of 12 to 15”
2. If you are not planting in rich topsoil, you can add a 2 to 4 inch layer of fresh
topsoil, aged manure, aged bark, or peat moss to improve the planting area.
Always mix thoroughly with your native soil. Remove excess soil after
planting. Do not mound soil around the base of the plants. Never plant
deeper than the plant was originally grown in its pot. No fertilizer should be
used until the roses have become established and are showing signs of new
growth.
CONTINUING CARE
In the garden, your roses will require at least 1-inch of rain (or equivalent
watering) each week. Apply Cottage Farms Carefree Bud „N Flower Rose
Booster periodically from early spring until late summer to ensure strong
growth and abundant blooms. Note-any rose planted in containers require more
frequent watering to keep the soil from drying out, and these container plantings
should be fertilized every other week for more abundant bloom.
Pruning needs of this collection of roses varies with size and variety. Some
(especially the smaller Minis) require no pruning, while other larger types
benefit from severe pruning in the spring and selective pruning throughout the
growing season. Pinch or prune faded blooms to promote greater flower
production.
These roses are hardy in-ground to zone 5. Nevertheless, we still recommend a
mulch or a covering of a loose, non-compacting mulch or soil “hilled” 3 to 4
inches around the base of each plant for winter protection. Remove in the
spring as soon as temperatures begin to rise above freezing.
If you plant in containers, move indoors to an unheated area, such as a garage
and water sparingly over the winter. This will give them winter protection in a
harsh climate as will moving the containers to the south side of your home‟s
foundation. Move out again in the spring as temperatures begin to warm.
