When it comes to specialty sponges, 

experience is indeed the best teacher. And 

we should know. Not only have we provided 

specialty sponges for more than 40 years, but 

we pioneered a number of innovations (plastic 

holders for dissector sponges, and concentric 

winding of the x-ray filament in “K” dissectors, 

to name just two). 

Our Gardlok ® specialty sponges are a testimony 

to our dedication to sponge quality. 

PEANUT SPONGES 

Gardlok sponges are produced to the strictest 

quality standards, and are made of the highest 

grade of surgical cotton for better absorption 

and less linting. They’re manufactured only 

from USA cotton. Our sponges are designed 

for the best possible performance — the gauze 

on our peanut sponges, for example, features 

a larger gauze strand than some other 

sponges, for better abrading properties. 

And, perhaps best of all, Gardlok sponges are 

available in a wide variety of types and sizes 

to meet your varied needs.

“K” DISSECTOR SPONGES 

“K” Dissector sponges, named for Dr. Kittner, are held in the 

jaws of a clamp at the ends or sides of the “can” construction, 

to provide a stable, soft tip for dissection and absorption 

during delicate surgical procedures. They have a slightly 

tighter structure than peanut sponge. 

Pilling Weck dissector sponges have a tightly-woven chevron 

mesh for finer dissection, and feature an x-ray thread wound 

concentrically in layers for x-ray visibility in any direction.

NEURO SPONGES 

Neuro sponges are used during cranial and spine surgery to 

moisten the dura or to cushion against bone edges. They are 

also used to protest brain tissue under the dura or elsewhere 

during incision. Gardlok neuro sponges are made from the 

highest quality non-woven cotton, which is soft, conformable, 

as free of lint as possible, and highly retentive in comparison 

to other rayon “cottonoid“ brands. 

For security, the x-ray detectable element is heat sealed and 

stitched into the sponge, and the sponges are double strung.

or identify bleeders, with less chance of damage to those 

structures. Pilling Weck Surgical’s Gardlok Peanut Sponges 

are made of USA cotton and feature a large gauze strand for 

better abrading in blunt dissection.

ROSEBUD/CHERRY SPONGES 

Smaller versions of peanut sponges, rosebud sponges are 

used for dissection and absorption where precise dissection 

is necessary during delicate surgical procedures such as 

thyroidectomies, colostomy closures, hepatic resections, 

laryngectomies and abdominal aortic and other vascular 

procedures. 

Cherries are very tightly-spun spherical sponges used for 

very gentle dissection and absorption during delicate surgical 

procedures. A center hole is incorporated to facilitate grip in 

a toothed forceps. Gardlok cherry sponged feature an x-ray 

detectable chip, rather than a tiny monofilament section, in the 

center of the sponge for enhanced visibility. Cherry sponge 

construction does not allow for a long monofilament incorporated 

in other Gardlok dissectors.

TONSIL SPONGES 

Tonsil sponges are used at the end of a forceps for absorption 

and pressure hemostatic control during tonsil and adenoid 

surgery. They can also be drawn into position and tied to a 

catheter for use after nasal surgical procedures for postnasal or 

sphenoid packing, applying medication following surgery, and 

for control of hemorrhaging or drainage. 

Pilling Weck Surgical tonsil sponges feature double stringing 

for secure retrieval after use, and are available in a wide variety 

of choices including gauze, cotton or gauze cotton-filled in 

three sizes. Other choices include strung or non-strung, x-ray 

and non x-ray detectable, sterile and non-sterile.
