Seat Belts A Help
Car Interiors Cause Injuries
Death and injury in car accidents
could be reduced by preventing
what happens inside the
••ar, according to an article in
the December issue of the. Imoerial
Oil Review based on studes
by car manufacturers and
independent authorities.
When a car collides and stops,
'ts occupants keep on going,
smashing themselves on the
roof, steering wheel and windshield,
says the Imperial Oil
Magazine. While much thought
and effort is devoted to preventing
accidents, they continue to
happen—without warning, often
to drivers who are not at fault
Therefore, the iriiportant point
is to prevent occupants from colliding
with the inside of the car.
As one precaution, children
should normally travel in the
back seat as studies show that
more injuries occur in the front
seat. Children should be seated
at all times. They should never
be allowed to eat candy or ice
He received his C.A. in 1960
^ar. Babies should be strapped
in carry cots or similar box-like
structures, wedged well onto the
floor in the back seat, according
to one authority interviewed.
Heavy objects should not be
'eft lying loose'y in the car, particularly
on the back window
shelf. In an accident loose objects
fly forward, like shrapnel
An important way of preventing
death or injury is to use
safety belts, the Review says.
Studies have shown that about
half of those killed annually in
traffic accidents could have been
saved by safety belts.
succeeding R. W. Robertson, wh
retired after serving one term
with the Board. In last Thursday's
election it was a neck an^
neck race between the two sue
cessful candidates, with Mrs
Walker polling 660 votes while
Mr. Sargent received 653. Third
Af embers of the crew of an imperial rig drilling for oil in British polu
Briiiging you oil products at bargain prices is a big job. Right now, for example, Imperial is
drilling 30 miles of hole at B.C's Boundary Lake oil field. Boundary Lake oil will travel 745
miles to Imperial's refinery near Vancouver, where it will be turned into products. And those
products reach you at bargain prices. Take Esso gasoline, for example. On the ayerage, it costs
motorists throughout B.C. 6^ cents per pound. Compared with other commodities in
everyday use, you won't find a better bargain. Milk, for example, sells on the average for
9^ cents a pound; soft drinks for 12^ cents a pound; even distilled water costs more
than gasoline. And of the 6^^ cents paid per pound for Esso gasoline, two cents is for
federal and provincial taxes that bring you such things as social services and new highways.
To bring you this bargain. Imperial has invested more than $80,000,000 in B.C. in the past ten
years alone. Yet today, on the average. Imperial gets less for the Esso gasoline it sells than
it did ten years ago...and Esso gasoline today is much more powerful than ten years ago.
