First Christmas
By FORREST L. SIDLE, Pastor
The first Christmas was a
time that God spoke to man. He
spoke to Zacharias in the Temple,
telling of the birth of John.
He spoke to Mary and told that
she would be with child by the
Holy Spirit and would bring
forth the Christ Child. The
Lord spoke to Joseph in a
dream and told him that he
should not be fearful to take
Mary as his wife. The Lord
moved upon the hearts of the
wise men to come and worship
the new-born King. In the quietness
of night intheJudeanhills,
the message and chorus of
praise was delivered tothe
shepherds. This was a glorious
time of God's manifesting Himself
to the world.
Down through the ages of time
the Lord has at times spoken in
some direct manner to man. He
spoke to Abraham and Jacob
giving them many wonderful
promises. He gave Moses the
Old Testament law and the pattern
for the tabernacle. Beginning
with Samuel, the Lord
spoke through prophets to men.
Yet, between these moments
of special revelation, there
were often long periods of time
in which there was no direct
sign or voice from heaven. In
these times the Lord counted the
previous revelations sufficient
for the needs of man. At the
time that Samuel began to dwell
and serve in the temple at Shiloh
we read, "And the word of the
Lord was precious in those
days; there was no open vision."
This was a time of silence, but
soon the Lord spoke through
Samuel, His prophet.
At the time of our Lord Jesus
Christ's coming, there had
been silence for four hundred
years. Suddenly God spoke to
various ones concerning
Christ's coming. Yet, even this
is not the greatest way that our
Heavenly Father has spoken to
us. We read in Hebrews 1: 1-3,
"God, who at sundry times and
in divers manners spake in time
Early Roman Had
'Practical' View
On Gift Giving
getting
"Christmas is
too
commercial!"
This modern complaint,
while it may have force, Is
somewhat lacking in originality.
"I hate the crafty arts of
giving presents," said the witty
Roman poet Martial, who lived
and wrote from about 40 to 104
A.D. "Gifts are like hooks."
His complaint was expressed
in a series of poems written for
a wealthy patron, at the time
of the Saturnalia, the pagan
festival from which came
many Christmas customs.
Martial, however, was not
always averse to presents. After
listing a large number of
small gifts, such as toothpicks,
figs, napkins, which had been
delivered to him, he pointed
out that it would have been
much easier for the messenger
to bring him "five pounds of
silver plate."
•past unto the fathers by the prophets,
hath in these last days
spoken unto us by His Son,
whom he hath appointed heir of
all things, by whom also he
made the worlds; who being the
brightness of His glory, andthe
express image of his person,
and upholding all things by the
word of His power, when He
had by Himself purged our sins,
sat down on the right hand of the
Majesty on high." Also in John
1:18 we read, "No man hath seen
God at any time; the only begotten
Son, which is in the bosom of
the Father, he hath declared
him." This isreally themessage
that is given in John 3:16,
"For God so loved the world,
that He gave His only begotten
Son, that whosoever believeth
in Him should not perish, but
have everlasting life." The
Lord has spoken by the Lord
Jesus Christ. His birth. His
life. His death and resurrection
are God's message of love
and hope to a world of sinners
under just condemnation. Some
have recently proclaimed that
God is dead. God may not be
giving special signs or revelations,
but the message that He
has given is sufficient for and
relevant to the needs of the
world today. God has spoken
and we have that message in
His infallible Word. We need
only to listen and receive this
message of salvation and joy.
Cfiristionity's Gift To Man
By PASTOR, LYMON E, JONES
There are many religious
systems in this wicked old world
offering mankind their various
blessings. Search them all
through and see what they have
to offer. Have any of them anything
like Christmas to offer
you? Have they anything to
match this?Searchand see,only
Christianity has a Christmas!
All other religions show man
how to save himself, or try to.
They point man to himself and
bid him look for the good in
himself. Man has undone himself
and lies in his own sins
and unhappiness. He can n^
more raise himself from his
ruins than you can pull yourself
up with your own boot
straps. God comes to nian, becomes
a man with the "rest of
men, yet without sin. He takes
man's burdens upon Himself.
He fulfills all of man's obUgations,
and then gives Himself
to pay for all of man's
guilt. And Christmas is just the
beginning of this story.
In Christmas God has made
possible the Christ standing
with outstretched arms inviting,
"Come unto me all ye that
labour and are heavy laden, I
will give you rest — rest for
your souls." Matt. 11, 28. Only
because of Christmas could the
Prophet Isaiah write "Surely
He hath born our sins and carried
our sorrows", "With His
Stripes are we healed", "The
Lord (Jehovah) hath laid on Him
the iniquity of us aU", "By
His knowledge shall my righteous
servant justify many; for
He shall bear their iniquities."
See Is. 53.
What a Christmas present
God gives the world in that lowly
manger of long ago! Look what
blessings He brings! Just what
man needed; A divine "spot
remover", so that man, the
sinner could have hope and
. eventually stand before the holy
face of God in perfect righteousness
'and holiness acceptable to
God, through the blood of that
little Lamb of God laid in Bethlehem's
manger!
Look around you and see if you
can find any religion coming
anywhere close to what Christ
has to offer in His. Christmas
is a good "sample" and the
more you dig into this religion
of Jesus Christ the more peace
and happiness, joy and true
gladness you will find. Not the
kind of a spirit that gives you a
giddy feeling and a headache the
next morning, but a happy joy
that grows and grows and lights
up a dying bed, and finally let
you close your eyes in peace,
and ushers you into an eternity
of gladness, far from fear and
sorrow. Why not take God's
Christmas present? It's free
and He wants you to have it.
Why waste it? Where can you
find anything half as good? Have
you ever given it a real chance?
Have you ever seriously
tried it? Wake up and really
live, and find out what the angel
was talking about so long ago
when He said "Fear not, for
unto you is born a Saviour which
is Christ the Lord!" "Glory to
God in the Highest, for His
Peace (which he sends) on earth
and His God Will toward men
(shown here)!" That's the kind
of a Merry Christmas we wish
you. And why not spend Christmas
in church this year, and get
a good look at the Christmas
present God offers you there!
Candlemas Eve Is
Favored As Time
To Remove Green
When is the right time to
take down the Christmas
greens? Before they become a
fire hazard, is the modern belief,
and that usually means
soon after Christmas Day.
In earlier times, however,
the question was not so easily
answered.
Some people believed that
Epiphany, or Twelfth Day,
January 6, was the proper time
for removing all Christmas
decorations. Others firmly
contended that the ereens
May the spirit of good
will to all men be your
guiding faith forever.
Candle
should remain until
mas, February 2.
WHEEL-IN MOTEL
One of those favoring the
later date was, apparently, the
poet Robert Herrick, who lived
from 1591 to 1674. He wrote of
taking down the greens in his
poem, "Ceremonies for Candlemas
Eve," but warned that
the greens must be completely
removed,
"For look how many leaves
there be
Neglected there (maids,
trust to me)
So many goblins you
shall see."
