Rain saves fish in Dragon Creek

stayed with her daughter and

•The hot dry weather in
August started to dry up
Upper Dragon Creek - the
main feeder for Dragon Lake.
It appeared the fingerling
trout or "fry" would be in
serious trouble until it rained,
just in time, and gave. the
creek enough water for them
to," survive.
Continued dry
weather,
though, could again cause
concern.
CREWS BUSY
The B.C. hydro crews were
busy along the east Lake
Shore the past few weeks
installing a new power line
from Hwy. 98 along the
Hydraulic Road, to the corner
of Dragon Lake Road where
they connected to the line
serving the Gravelle Ferry
District.

SHELLEY BACK
Shelley Chapman, eldest
daughter of Don and Arlene
Chapman, returned in July
from a years stay in Australia
where she was a Rotary
Exchange Student.
Shelley hasn't seen her
father yet as he left before
she arrived, to spend the
summer teaching at a teacher's
college in Bangkok, Thailand.
He is returning home via
Australia, where he will be
the guest of one of Shelley's
host families. Don should be
home by the end of the month
as he is principal at Maple
Drive Jr. Sec. School.
Martin and Alice Richards
from Ft. St. John spent a
week or so with Tom and
Dorothy Cheavins of Johnson
Rd. recently.
Martin was recuperating
from an operation he had in
the Prince George Hospital.;
Martin was a former Dragon
Lake resident.
BACK TO SCHOOL
Tom Swanky, a law student
at the University of Edmonton,
is visiting this week with
his parents, Joyce and Bill
Swanky before returning to
start school on Sept. 5.

.garbage collected by Quesnel
Clean-Up.
At present the truck does
not make a run out to the
Nazko Road and around the
Milburn Lake-Rawling Road
loop, but if enough interest is
, generated, they may consider
adding that area to their list.
Resident living along the
aforementioned roads that are
interested in a regular garbage
collection should phone
Mrs. Muir at 249-5443 as soon
as possible.
She..will in turn, compile a
list of names to pass on to
Quesnel Clean-Up and they
will decide if the number of
people on the list makes it
worth their while to collect
garbage in that area.
ENVELOPE, PLEASE
An envelope was delivered
to our place last week addressed
to Victoria, #166, R.R;#3,
Quesnel.
Upon opening it I found it to
be from a C.Ber in Nipawin,
Saskatchewan, who was talking
to Victoria #166, but
couldn't quite pick up all the
address.
The
"Victoria" was what
spurred the Mail lady to
deliver this to our place, but
we do not own a C.B. set, so it
is meant for someone else.
The communication was made
on Aug. 16 on Channel L16.

CAMPING
Doug and Dora McMillan,
and son. Gordon, returned
recently from a four-week
camping trip across Canada.
They visited briefly with
relatives in Ontario and New
Brunswick, but mainly this
was a sight-seeing trip.
Weatherwise, they didn't
do too badly. Although they
ran into lots of rain, it was
only at night, and being in a
camper, this didn't bother
them too much.
By day, they were fortunate
to experience good weather
for pretty well the whole
trip.
Dora mentioned some of the
more interesting features of
their trip.
In Ottawa they had a tour
of the Parliament Buildings
and felt they were much more
impressive in real life than
they are in pictures.
Throughout the province of
Quebec Dora noted that all
street and highway signs
were in French only. However,
store employees tried to
use as much English as
possible for customers whose
knowledge of French was
very limited.
Driving in Montreal was
not much fun because traffic
was terribly heavy. I expect
driving through the
Maritimes
was a pleasant change
after the heavily populated
areas of Ontario and Quebec.
McMillans saw quite a bit of
the countryside in Prince
Edward Island and New Brunswick.
They did not see as much of
Nova Scotia as they would
have liked, but they followed
the Cabot Trail around Cape
Breton Island and found the
rugged scenery there breathtaking.
They were even entertained
by a pod of whales off
the Cape.
Dora is "already looking
forward to going again-in the
fall, next time to enjoy the
vivid colours of the autumn
leaves, and to see the places
they missed this time.

Scrub. Scrub. Shine. Shine.
Mop. Squish. Water drips out
open windows.
The members of Zig Zag
Mountain String Band Clean
their brand new "Cache Creek
Motors Ltd." school bus.
Squeezing rags. Vacuuming
floors. Steam-cleaning the engine.
Scrub. Scrub. Scrub.
Shine.
"We're just riding the crest
of the wave right now,"
commented Chris Hartridge,
general manager and drummer
of Zig Zag Mountain
String Band,"Whatever happens
propels you to different
stages all the time...like buying
a bus...six months ago we
couldn't apprehend buying a
bus. But some friends in
Quesnel have taken an active
interest in the band and its
,. future. Because of that, we
were able to buy the bus. It's
hard to go under the strength
of a band to get a bank loan."
Scrub. Scrub. Five dogs
wander around, licking sniffing
barking; A shelty cross; a
, wolf-malamute cross; a pure
malamute; and two pure
mutts. Bottles of pop and
smiles are passed around in
large quantities. Shine. Shine.
"Would you like some raisin
bran?" Chuckle, snicker.
"This is a school bus, so the
girls sit at the front and the
boys at the back. No smoking,
and definitely no obscene
language."
"Hey, does anybody have
some gum?"
"There's some stuck here
on the steps of the bus. It's
not too flat...and very chewy,"
was the reply. Mop. Squish.
Clean, clean, clean.
Zig Zag Mountain String
Band first played in Moose
Heights Hall on New Years
Eve,
bringing in the year
1977. They played at each
other's houses, at the Hudson
Bay Coffeehouse, and then at
people's parties.
From there, the natural
progression was "Please play
at our wedding..." "Can .you
play at our club dance?" And
as 1977 continued, Zig Zag
received a large following at
the Cataline Trading Post in
Cottonwood. The first out-oftown
date was playing for the
graduating class of forestry
students at the College of
New Caledonia.
Back in Quesnel, the band
played for an NDP party.
Since people from all over the
province attended, the name
of the band was spread across
the land. Next came other
NDP jobs in Heffley Creek,
Todd Mountain and Fraser
Lake. The biggest effort to
make the band known was at
the Great Northern Folk
Music Concert #2 held in
Prince George this past January.
From there, jobs were
coming from other Prince
George, clubs and private
parties, and from Clearwater
and Kamloops.
All these miles do wear out
private cars...so hence, The
Bus.
In fact, the band is
booked solidly out of Quesnel
until the beginning of October,
playing places like Vancouver
Island, Haney. Bella
Coola, Terrace, Prince . Rupert,
Whistler Mountain, and
closer to home Williams Lake.
Although Members of the
band held regular jobs during
the school year-two are teachers,
one a student-they
now intend to play full time,
all the time. Each member has
agreed to a complete commitment
to the band. And
when ten people are involved,
that's a big commitment.
The band members include
Hartridge; Mike Gifford;. vocalist,
mandolin, trombone,
trumpet, and unofficial music
director; Paul
Templeton,
road manager and banjo player;
Les Mcintosh on saxaphone
and flute; Jane Gilbert,
also on flute, and vocalist;
Dave Spinks, another vocalist,
guitarist and writer of the
band's original
material;
Craig Armstrong, lead guitar
and vocals; and the three
Winders brother: Lynette, on
harmonica, bus driver and
soundman; Lyman on bass;
and Kelly on rhythm guitar
and vocals. In addition, members
serve their other purposes...woman
chaser, practical
joker, and chief weirdo.
Terms of endearment for
each other. They're all very
good friends, but it isn't a
family atmosphere, according
to Hartridge.
"Everybody carries on individual
identities. The band
does take priority over families,
because the band is first
in a lot of our minds. But .
wives and girlfriends take an
active interest in the band.
The come with us out of town,
take tickets at doors of our

concerts, help clean up, and
get involved."
And Zig Zag Mountain
String Band is becoming very
popular out
town. They are
hoping to break into the
Vancouver market soon. A
few recording contracts have
come in, including one from a
country-western music promotor
in Vancouver. But. the
right deal has not come up
yet.
In the meantime, it's difficult
to see the band in
Quesnel. Take Billy Barker
Days for example. According
to Hartridge, the band really
wanted to stay in Quesnel and
play for Billy Barker Dayshometown
band playing at
hometown celebration.
Hartridge said that the
money offered to them to play
in Quesnel for Billy Barker
Days was a third of what was
offered to play in Terrace for
the same weekend.
"We're trying to make a
living. This band isn't just a
hobby. We really wanted to
do the date, but we have to
make some money. It's a cold
hard fact, but true. Hometown
or not, we couldn't do it.
So we went to Terrace; We
felt bad because we weren't
recognized as more than just
another basement
band.
We're trying to impress upon
people that we aren't."
At the Williams Lake Stampede
this summer, Zig Zag
Mountain String Band won
the top prize as "First, best
conventional band."
"Conventional? We've been
called anything but conventional
before!" The band is far
from conventional. Besides a
wide variety of personalities
in the band, musical tastes
differ also. You can .hear
everything from country music
to jugband, from Dixieland
jazz to bluegrass.
Self-proclaimed
unofficial
music director Mike Gifford
says, "We try to arrange the
songs in a balanced way. But
it's not pure because of the
way we play it. Paul and I
have been in bluegrass bands
before, so that influences the
style of the band. But a
bluegrass lover wouldn't call
it completely pure bluegrass."
Mike smiles and continues,
"So many people are playing a
barrage'of sounds. It's a high
energy band where different
personalities come together to
have a good time...and a
definite sound comes from
the mixture of so many people
uniting musically."
Meanwhile those • same
people were having a good
time on the new bus...
"Hey Mike, let's take the
bus for a ride and test it out."
"Come on Lynette, drive it
like you own it!"
"No standing on the bus."
"But I want to bus surf!
Three of guys stand at the
back of the bus, arms extending
sideways, balancing as the
bus rocks down the highway.
"Look out for those waves!"
"Wheeee! Bus surfing!" .
"Let's have a tall contestcan
you stand up in the bus
without your head touching
the ceiling?"
'Take you cowboy hat off,
you're cheating!"
"Hey I just thought of a
way we can pay off the bus!
When we go to the Okanagan,
let's bring back a bus full of
fruit, and then sell it."
"I have a better idea. Let's
bring back a bus full of fruit,
make wine, and then sell it!"
"Let's put a trampoline in
the back of the bus. Forget
about bus surfing!
The bus rocks on to Cottonwood.
Splatter. Splatter.
Mud from a passing logging
truck splashes on the bus.
"There go our clean windows."
Groan.
"Let's go to a service
station, and make them wash
all the windows!"
Scrub. Scrub. Shine. Shine.
Athletes capture Games medals

said. "But all the greens

Five strokes behind the
Peace-Cariboo team was the
Okanagan with a 935 total.
Tsawwassen finished the twoday
tournament with 946
strokes and the Kootenays
edge Lower Mainland by one,
scoring a 964 total.
The Lower Mainland came
in with 965 while Skeena
rounded out the top eight
with 1,001 strokes.
Benoit is a seven handicapper
and Lane rests at nine.
Quesnel's only other medal
came from Russ Stewart who
tossed about 49 per cent for a
bronze at the senior men's
horseshoe pitching competition.
Stewart, 61, was joined by
eight other local pitchers.
"I didn't think I'd get into
the medals," Stewart said. "I
pretty near come into the
silver."
"It's the first medal I've
ever won. It's the first time
I've ever been in that kind of
competition," he said.
Said Stewart: "I was- quite
calm. If I'd have been otherwise
I would have never won
it.
Tal Sverson, who left Quesnel
last year and now lives in
Peachland, went undefeated
enroute to a gold medal in the
A class.
Matt Zablotny and Earl
Gillard threw in the men's,
Shirley Gardner and Darla
Barnes in the women's, Nettie
Zirk in the senior women's
and Shayne and Barry Barnes
in the juniors.
Gardner, who lost all three
games she played, said although
the tournament ran
smoothly many pitchers did
not like organizers cutting the
women's tournament short.
"It was a little upsetting in
that the women's tournament
was cut off," Gardner said. "A
lot of people are pretty up
tight about it."
The women had a field of
nine competitors. Games officials
split the group into two
small round-robins, cutting
the number of games each
pitcher would play.
Gardner 'feels the pitchers
should have played one big
round-robin,- giving everyone
a chance to absorb more than
two losses. Two defeats
meant the pitcher was
through for the tournament.
Thirteen-year old Lyle Mc-
Gladdery of Quesnel put in a
fine showing in the junior
small-bore rifle competition.
McGladdery finished eight
overall with his 1,079 points
and 22 bulls eyes.
His best score came in the
prone when he hit 379 out of
400 points and nailed 11 bulls
eyes. McGladdery shot a 368
in the kneeling with seven
bulls eyes. and 333 in the
standing with four direct hits.
"I shot maybe as good or
better than I ever have
before," McGladdery said. "I
couldn't have done any better.
I would have liked to get"in
the top three."
McGladdery said he was
matched against 23 other
shooters in his division.
"That's one of the biggest
I've ever been in," McGladdery
said of the competition.
"You're sort of jittery. You
want to do the best you can."
Dave Bell and Bob Cossar
were two other Quesnel Rod
and Gun Club members competing
in the handgun events
at the Games.
Bell was 13th overall in the
air pistol and dropped to 14th
in the standard pistol. Cossar
was sixth in the air and 22nd
in the standard pistol.
Williams Lake's Nick Weber
took the gold medal in the
air pistol.
Bell's score in the air pistol
was 319 out of 400 and he had
982 out of 1,200 in the
standard pistol. Cossar went
339 of 400 in the air pistol.
Bell said the standard, or
.22 calibre, had two sections of
60 shots each. Each round had
a slow fire sequence, 272
minutes for a string of five
rounds; time fire, 20 seconds
for five rounds; and rapid fire,
10 seconds for five shots.
"Considering the competition,
not too bad," Bell said of
his performance.
"Members of the Canadian
national team were barred
but the provincial team was
there and they just wiped us,"
Bell said.
"It takes experience. The
shooter has to be calm every
single shot. We're not too
unhappy with what we shot,"
Bell said.
Cossar said he was surprised
at the friendship exhibited
at the Games.
"There was a real feeling of
comradeship in the competition,"
Cossar said. "I hadn't
really expected that."
As for his scores: "Reasonably
terrible. We have off
days and on days."
Said Cossar: "I don't think
you should ever worry about a
poor performance
because
you dwell on it and itll affect
your future performance."
John Monroe of Quesnel
was part of a bicycle racing
team from the Prince George
Cycling Club.
Although
Monroe didn't
win any medals, teammate
David Ferris of Prince George
captured one gold and one
bronze.
Ferris, riding in the school
boy division (riders who are
not licensed by the Canadian
Cycling Association but have
finished grade 12), took first
in the 10-mile time trials and
came third in the 37-mile road
race.
Monroe's troubles began
with the two lap, 18 Vz -miles
each way, road race.
"I cramped," Monroe said.
"I hadn't warmed up enough
before the race. I didn't cramp
until the fourth mile up the
hill." By the time Monroe
walked to the top most of the
pack passed him.
"When I got going again I
was one mile behind everyone,"
Monroe said. "I caught
quite a few of the riders who
were back."
And just as Monroe worked
his way closer to the leaders,
now on the return leg, the
bicycle's chain tangled when
he shifted to a lower gear.
Monroe said "I just decided
to call it quits" about 13 miles
from the finish line. >
The next day Monroe and
Clem Smienk, Peter Bartell
and Rod Martinsen placed
seventh in the senior team
time trials.
Monroe said they were V/t
minutes out of a bronze medal
finish.
"All in all I think we can be
quite happy," Monroe said,
gauging the team's rides. "I
think we were so disgusted
with the road race that we did
really well in the time trials."

A Quesnel man was sentenced
to six months in the
Prince George Regional Correction
Centre after pleading
guilty August 21 to a charge
of trafficking in a narcotic.
In addition, Texas Louis
Taylor received a stay of
proceedings on a charge of
possession of a narcotic for
the purposes of trafficking.
He was also charged with
dealing in a forged document
but the case was dismissed.
A stay . of proceedings
means the crown has decided
not to proceed with the
charge but may reopen the
matter at a latter date.
A charge of impaired driving
against Michael J. Stuber
was also stayed August 21
during provincial court proceedings.
Other
impaired driving
charges were remanded to
later dates.
Robert W. Galbraith, charged
with impaired driving,
will appear in provincial court
September 15 for trial, while
Robert E„ Leech and Erik
Panum, both charged with
impaired driving will appear
in court August 30, at -which
time they will enter a plea.
Francois Gascon, charged
with impaired driving and
possession of a restricted
weapon, has also been remanded
to August 30 at which
time he wfll enter a plea.
September 8 has been set
as the date for the continuation
of Kenneth Steffen's trial.
He. is charged with driving
while his licence was under
suspension.
The case of Dougias M.
Clement, charged with assault
causing bodily harm, has been
remanded to September 12 at
which time he will enter a
plea.
Gilbert Reggie Boyd, charged
with breaking, entering
and committing an indictable
offense, chose trial by judge
and jury and was remanded to
September 29 for a preliminary
hearing.
Harry C. Botterill and Leslie
C. Spooner, both charged
with breaking and entering
with intent to commit an
indictable offense will appear
in court August 30 at which
time they will enter a plea.
The case of Francis J.
Doherty, charged with dangerous
driving was remanded
to August 31 at which time he
too will enter a plea.

An accidental drowning
August 5 in Wendle Lake, 50
miles east of Quesnel claimed
the life of a Wells man.-
Gary Kent Peevers, 28, of
Wells, was reported missing
at 1:00 a.m. by two friends
after, he had swum 30 to 40
feet 'out from the Wendle
Lake beach area and failed to
surface.
Members of the Wells
RCMP detachment recovered
his body six o'clock the
following morning, in nine
feet of water.

Central Interior Cablevision
has made application to
the Canadian Radio television
Commission to bring in the
ABC-TV network from Seattle.
At the same time, the
company is applying to add
three more FM radio stations
to the five already approved.
The Cablevision company,
which operates systems at 100
Mile House, Williams Lake,
Quesnel and Prince George,
now brings in three American
networks, CBS, NBC and
PBS. The addition of the
fourth American network will
give central interior residents
the same choice of American
network television as people
in the Vancouver area.
The ABC-TV network is
noted for its presentation of
sports events and has been
requested by many cablevision
subscribers, according
to a statement released August
24.
Each television microwave
channel is capable of carrying
ion wants Seattle station
two FM stations. Cablevision
was approved last summer to
bring in five Vancouver FM
stereo stations and with the
completion of installation of
the microwave equipment by
B.C. Telephone Company, all
five FM stations are scheduled
to be available to cablevision
subscribers next
month.
The FM stereo stations
include CHQM-FM, CFMI-
FM, CKLG-FM, CBU-FM,
and CBUF-FM.
The programming of the
stations vary from classical to
rock to easy listening music
and CBC English and French
FM networks.
The three additional FM
stations for which Cablevision
is now applying are the Co-op
station at Vancouver CFRO-
FM; the all-news station at
Vancouver, CKO-FM; and a
Victoria easy-listening station,
CFMS-FM.
The CRTC has a hearing set
for Vancouver on October 24
and cablevision officials are

A funeral for the late Gary
Kent Peever, 27, was held on
August 9 at 3:00 p.m. in the
Wells United Church.
The services were conducted
by Rev. L. Smith.
Interment was at the Barkerville
cemetery.
The pallbearers were Gibb
Randall, Bill Jeffries, Wayne
Fisher, Darrel Fisher, David
Williams and David Thatcher.

his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cliff
Peever of Wells, one brother,
Jim Peever of Vancouver, one
sister, Mrs. Judy Mooring of
Quesnel, and his grandmother,
Mrs. Isabella Fraser of
Quesnel.

of 55 cents per month to pay
for the microwave costs of the
three new broadcast signals.
If aproved, it will bring to
eight the number of TV
channels available on cablevision
plus eight FM radio
stations.
Current rates are $9.00 per
month for one outlet and an
additional $1.00 per month for
each additional outlet.
If approved , the rates
would go to $9.55 per month
for one outlet and extra
outlets would remain at $1.00
per month.
Ron East, president of
Central Interior Cablevision,
says that it was originally
anticipated a "pass - through "
cost of $1.00 would be needed
to supply the ABC-TV signal.
The telephone company
quotation was much lower
than expected to supply the
microwave facilities and this,
coupled with the high percentage
of subscribers paying for
cablevision service, has brought
the cost down to the
requested 55 cents.
Cablevision currently passes
12,300 homes at Prince
George, 3,240 at Quesnel,
3,340 at Williams Lake and
580 at 100 Mile House. Homes
subscribing to cablevision are:
9,540 at Prince George

Billy Barker earned a shot
at its fourth consecutive all-
Cariboo championship on August
21 with a 9 - 0 romp over
Kopetski A's at Cariboo Ball
Park.
Billy Barker took the bestof-five
Quesnel final in three
straight games.
The A's were in it until the
bottom of the fifth inning
when the score was 3 - 0 for
Billy Barker.
Pitcher Kevin Beaudry,
who went the distance for the
A's, held the powerful Barker
squad to four hits while his
teammates committed one
error.
But the right-hander found
himself in trouble early in the
inning when the Booth
brothers combined to score
the 4 - 0 run.
John led off with a standup
double and then Bruce drove
in the run with another base
hit. Bruce took second on the
play but was just safe as third
baseman Jim Crewe inadvertently
kicked the ball to Kevin
Lust at second.
The A's seemed to lose
their composure when Mike
Cummins reached base on an
error and then Steve Huska,
in for Bill Kinder, pounded out
a hit to fill the bases.
Beaudry tried to push a fast
ball past Butch Meyers and
the Billy Barker right-fielder
sent it sailing high over the
center field fence for
no-out grand slam homer,
the
Kopetski recovered quickly
with three outs in the next
four men at bat but the
damage was already done.
Cummins put the finishing
touches to the win, scoring a
run on one of three Barker
hits in the top of the sixth.
Winner Bryan Funk scattered
four hits while fanning
six batters and allowing one
walk. Beaudry collected four
strikeouts and allowed one
walk against 12 Barker hits.
Each team was charged
with two errors.
Billy Barker got the only
run it needed in the top of the
second when Meyers scored
on a passed ball.
It turned out to be Meyers'
night when he also drove in
another run in the third,
making it five RBIs for the
game, to have a hand in six of
Billy Barker's nine runs.
Meyers got on in the second
when he beat out the toss and
then moved to second base on
Max Helzel's single to left
field.
When Tom Spooner was
safe on an error the bases
were loaded.
Meyers scored on - the
passed ball while Vic Lavallee
was at the plate. Lavallee
struck out to make it two
down and then Funk flied out
to center field to retire the
side.
Billy Barker displayed some
fine defensive plays. The first
big play happened in the top
of the second with one man on
first. Funk snagged a drive by
Ron Halvorson and pegged
the ball to Bruce Booth at
second who tossed to Lavallee
at first for the double play.
Another highlight had John
Booth charge in and grab a
bunt by Kevin Lust, turn, and
fire the ball to Bruce for a
force at third to keep the A's
out of scoring position.

fully constructed at 100 Mile
House, Williams Lake and
Quesnel with only additions to
plant being those to keep up
with growth. At Prince George,
the three year program
to build the cablevision system
should see the completion
of the "bowl" area of the city
by this autumn.
Cablevision received a $1.00
rate increase approval which
went into effect earlier this
summer. That increase covered
the cost of supplying the
first five FM stations plus the
news channel (13) and other
inflation costs since the company
was formed in 1974.
CICV is a public company
which is owned largely by
about 250 local residents of
the Cariboo and Prince George
communities.
