MOVIE NEWS by Glen Nadeau THE exhibitors in Canada and U.S.A. again have voted on who they consider the most popular star for their theatre. As usual the men dominate the wiimers by taking 8 of the top 10 spots. Academy Award winner WILLIAM HOLDEN, who has been in pictures since 1939 when he made his dehut in the prophetically — titled "Golden Boy", leads the list. Holden's coup this vear was aided mainly bv "Picnic" and "The Proud and the Profane". The other nine in the Top Ten following in order are: JOHN WAYNE, JAMES STEWART, BURT LAN CASTER, MARTIN and LE WIS, GARY COOPER, MA RILYN MONROE. KIM NOVAK and FRANK SIN ATRA. This is the eighth consecutive annearance of JOHN WAYNE in the TOD Ten Primarily seen in topnotch Westerns it was "The Searchers" that kept him rolBng this year. .TAIVTES STEWART also appears in quite a few of the better outdoor movies but it was Hitchcock's suspense feature "The Man Who Knew Too Much" that was his most popular movie this year. First of the newcomers on the list is PURT LANCAS TER who played two divers roles this year, the happy-golucky oaf in "The Rose Tattoo" and the has-been aerialist in "Trapeze". Of course he is more than just an actor now with his own producing company. Directly after him is GLENN FORD who is another newcomer to the Top Tubby Tyler carries a Ibt of weight in Ridge Corners, nearly 300 pounds. • • • Bein' a bread winner ain't so hot; Uncle Sam always gits a big slice. • • • Yep, there's a lot of hitch hikers on the road to heaven. .• • • When In 'the movies we'd like to smack, the guys that rattle a popcorn sack. • • • Every time Tod Bolton gits an idea he gits a headache. • • • V'* If It's none of your business, why argue? -^EV. CHARLEY GRAN1 L*3-5( Ten although he has been in movies since 1940 and has always been considered one of the better stars. It was the Sensational "Blackboard Jungle" last year which put him on the top. "Trial" "Jubal" and "Ransom" have all helped to keep him there. The country's favorite cutups, DEAN MARTIN and JERRY LEWIS, are still on the Top Ten but now that they have split up next year's results will be interesting. GARY COOPER has the distinction of being a Top Ten winner more times than any other performer (17 to be exact). His only picture last vear was "The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell" ,hut he will star in two releases next year. MARILYN MONROE returns to the list for the third time. Newcomer number three is KIM NOVAK. Her first film "Pushover" was released in the siunmer of 1954 and she was voted a Star of Tomo'n-ow in 1955. She was in three big movies this year, "The Man With The Golden Arm", "Picnic" and "The Eddy Duchin Story". For a star who was considered finished four years ago FRANK SINATRA has made a sensational comeback. Recently he has appeared in some of HoUywoods best movies including "The Man With The Golden Arm" "Guys and Dolls" and "High Society". Kiwanis Supper For Youngsters KIV/ANIS Club members entertained youngsters at a Christmas supper in the United Church Hall on Wednesday of last week. There were fifteen children, sons and daughters of club members, on hand for the affair. Following a turkey dinner the children saw an hour-long .showing of pictures and each received a gift at the close of the evening. Legion Haii Fiiled For Cliiidren's Parly SUNDAY afternoon saw the hall crowded to capacity for the childrens party held bj' Cariboo Branch No. 94, Canadian Legion. Youngsters of all ages were on hand for the showing of films which preceeded a visit by Santa Claus. If the ORFU obtains the full quota - it was 12 this year - of import players instead of the four they have played with in recent seasons the clubs could become strong enough to put up a good showing against the Big Four clul)s. In 1954, the last time the ORFU challenged for the Grey Cup, its champion Kitchener-Waterloo Dutchmen met Edmonton in Grey Cup semi-final and lost 38- 6 - not such a lopsided score when compared with 50-27 Eskimos Cup final margin over Montreal last month.
