<strong>Check</strong> <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> <strong>bindings</strong> <strong>before</strong><br />

<strong>you</strong> <strong>head</strong> <strong>down</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>slopes</strong><br />

ON MY desk calendar<br />

is a note: Ski Prep!<br />

It's my remmder <strong>to</strong><br />

give my ski equipment a<br />

good check out for <strong>the</strong><br />

season. How about <strong>you</strong>.'<br />

It's time <strong>to</strong> give <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong><br />

ski equipment some tender<br />

loving care.<br />

Let's think safety<br />

first. <strong>Check</strong> <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> <strong>bindings</strong>!<br />

Your ski <strong>bindings</strong><br />

are <strong>the</strong> important link between<br />

<strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> boots and<br />

<strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> skis. They have <strong>the</strong><br />

dual role of holding <strong>you</strong><br />

firmly <strong>to</strong> <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> skis when<br />

flying <strong>down</strong> a bumpy<br />

slope and <strong>the</strong>n releasing<br />

in a slow, twisting fall.<br />

That's no easy task!<br />

Modern <strong>bindings</strong> are<br />

reliable and safe, a testament<br />

<strong>to</strong> years of design<br />

and engineering. However,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y have <strong>to</strong> be adjusted<br />

properly and maintained<br />

<strong>to</strong> be safe.<br />

The <strong>bindings</strong> and<br />

boot act as a unit. To properly<br />

check, <strong>you</strong> need <strong>to</strong><br />

place <strong>the</strong> ski boot in <strong>the</strong><br />

binding. Forward pressure,<br />

adjustments are made first<br />

by moving <strong>the</strong> heel piece<br />

of <strong>the</strong> binding for or aft<br />

as necessary.<br />

The interface between<br />

<strong>the</strong> ski boot and <strong>the</strong> binding<br />

has <strong>to</strong> be adjusted <strong>to</strong><br />

fine parameters on some<br />

binding models. With<br />

<strong>the</strong>se adjustments correct,<br />

<strong>the</strong> release <strong>set</strong>ting can be<br />

John Ball<br />

HITTIHCi THE SLOPES<br />

made. These .ire <strong>the</strong> numbers<br />

<strong>you</strong> see on rhe housing<br />

of <strong>the</strong> heel and <strong>to</strong>e<br />

piece in <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> binding.<br />

This <strong>set</strong>ting indicates <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>to</strong>rque force required for<br />

release. This <strong>set</strong>ting must<br />

be made for each specific<br />

boot and individual.<br />

I strongly recommend<br />

that <strong>the</strong>se adjustments be<br />

left <strong>to</strong> a qualified ski technician.<br />

While I am recommending<br />

that <strong>you</strong> shy<br />

away from making <strong>the</strong><br />

above adjustments <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong>self,<br />

<strong>you</strong> should take responsibility<br />

for <strong>the</strong> care of<br />

<strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> <strong>bindings</strong>. Wind <strong>the</strong><br />

release <strong>set</strong>ting back <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

bot<strong>to</strong>m of <strong>the</strong> scale for<br />

s<strong>to</strong>rage in- <strong>the</strong> off season.<br />

This takes <strong>the</strong> pressure off<br />

<strong>the</strong> springs and helps prevent<br />

metal fatigue.<br />

I have a small piece of<br />

duct tape on my skis were<br />

I record <strong>the</strong> proper <strong>set</strong>ting.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> fall, I wind my<br />

<strong>bindings</strong> up <strong>to</strong> this <strong>set</strong>ting.<br />

O<strong>the</strong>r maintenance is<br />

2000<br />

QUESNEL<br />

simple. Keep <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> <strong>bindings</strong><br />

clean, in particular<br />

where <strong>the</strong> boot and binding<br />

make c(mtact. Spring<br />

skiing usually means a<br />

good share of mud and<br />

grime <strong>get</strong>s on <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> bind-"<br />

ings, ei<strong>the</strong>r from <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> ski<br />

boots or travellmg on <strong>the</strong><br />

roof ot <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> vehicle.<br />

If <strong>you</strong> didn't have a<br />

spring clean, do it now. A<br />

little WI) 40 will help.<br />

Remember, dirt means<br />

friction and friction is <strong>the</strong><br />

main reason for binding<br />

release failure.<br />

1 like <strong>to</strong> do a binding<br />

twist put test. It is a rough<br />

safety check. I can do this<br />

test inside on a carpeted<br />

floor or on <strong>the</strong> snow.<br />

I <strong>set</strong> my ski on edge<br />

and by pressing and twisting<br />

with <strong>the</strong> boot and leg<br />

I twist out of my <strong>bindings</strong>.<br />

To test <strong>the</strong> heel I<br />

pull up strongly on <strong>the</strong><br />

binding heel piece. If I can<br />

<strong>get</strong> a release with my own<br />

leg strength <strong>the</strong>n I have<br />

confidence that <strong>the</strong>y will<br />

work in <strong>the</strong> real situation.<br />

Each season in our<br />

shop at Troll we see several<br />

pairs of old skis and<br />

<strong>bindings</strong>. We cannot adjust<br />

<strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> safety<br />

parameters that I have explained<br />

above. For<br />

example,e, <strong>the</strong> din or release<br />

<strong>set</strong>ting is meant <strong>to</strong><br />

measure force. The release<br />

<strong>set</strong>tings on modern <strong>bindings</strong><br />

all correspond <strong>to</strong> an<br />

international norm. This<br />

is <strong>the</strong> only way <strong>to</strong> ensure<br />

safe skiing.<br />

Older <strong>bindings</strong> have<br />

used arbitrary <strong>set</strong>tings<br />

that do not correspond <strong>to</strong><br />

any norms. They cannot<br />

be <strong>set</strong> <strong>to</strong> provide <strong>the</strong> margin<br />

ol protection that we<br />

need for safe skiing. There<br />

is a significant risk of<br />

breaking a leg with <strong>the</strong>se<br />

older <strong>bindings</strong>.<br />

Please, if <strong>you</strong> have<br />

such old equipment, don't<br />

risk <strong><strong>you</strong>r</strong> legs. Rent a pair<br />

of skis which would cost<br />

<strong>you</strong> less than $20.<br />

Happy skiing!<br />

There's more <strong>to</strong> fishing<br />

than just catching fish<br />

WHAT IS <strong>the</strong> best<br />

thing about fishing.^ I<br />

have been asked that<br />

question many times over<br />

<strong>the</strong> past four decades and<br />

have given different answers<br />

at different times.<br />

When 1 was a kid, my<br />

answer would have been<br />

an immediate, honest, and<br />

straight forward<br />

"catching fish". Back <strong>the</strong>n<br />

life was carefree. Each<br />

day was full of promise<br />

and every fishing trip was<br />

an adventure. If I wasn't<br />

<strong>head</strong>ing out <strong>to</strong> go creek<br />

fishing with my cousin<br />

Charlie, I was hounding<br />

my fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>to</strong> take me out<br />

with him in <strong>the</strong> boat. I<br />

learned how <strong>to</strong> read <strong>the</strong><br />

ring of a rise and present<br />

dry flies <strong>to</strong> opportunistic<br />

trout by <strong>the</strong> time I was<br />

eleven years old. My<br />

•childhood, at least, was<br />

simple and uncomplicated.<br />

Adolescence is never<br />

easy. Looking back, I<br />

would have <strong>to</strong> say <strong>the</strong><br />

best thing about fishing in<br />

those formidable years<br />

was that it afforded me an<br />

opportunity <strong>to</strong> figure out<br />

life on my own terms.<br />

After startmg work, I<br />

could afford all <strong>the</strong> fishing<br />

gear that I had convinced<br />

myself was necessary.<br />

That was when I became<br />

a 'serious' angler -<br />

whatever <strong>the</strong> hell that is<br />

supposed <strong>to</strong> mean. I know<br />

I owned: enough spinning<br />

and bait casting gear, fly<br />

rods, reels^ fly lines, fhes,<br />

and tackle boxes, crammed<br />

vvith all <strong>the</strong> tawdry<br />

baubles of decadence, <strong>to</strong><br />

James Murray<br />

THE GREAT OUTDOORS<br />

The one thing<br />

I did learn from<br />

being a<br />

'serious' angler<br />

is that<br />

materialism<br />

<strong>get</strong>s in <strong>the</strong> way<br />

of real<br />

enjoyment.<br />

open my own tackle shop.<br />

And if my memory serves<br />

me well, it seems those<br />

were also <strong>the</strong> days when I<br />

spent a lot of time in pursuit<br />

of large fish in remote<br />

places. I probably would<br />

have said <strong>the</strong> best thing<br />

about fishing in those<br />

days was catching big<br />

fish.<br />

The one thing I did<br />

learn from being a<br />

'serious' angler is that materialism<br />

<strong>get</strong>s in <strong>the</strong> way<br />

of real enjoyment. The<br />

fish r caught with my fa<strong>the</strong>r's<br />

old steel rod were<br />

every bit as worthy as<br />

those rhave caught on my<br />

ultra-light, high-tech graphite<br />

rods.<br />

And, when it comes<br />

right <strong>down</strong> <strong>to</strong> it, pan fried<br />

trout served streamside<br />

with pork and beans,<br />

tastes every bit a good as<br />

salmon en route with<br />

asparagus tips.<br />

Times change. I am<br />

less ol a materialist than I<br />

use <strong>to</strong> be.<br />

These days it is time<br />

itself that is so rarely my<br />

own. I used <strong>to</strong> enjoy<br />

spending hours at <strong>the</strong><br />

edge ot a stre.im, casting<br />

flies <strong>to</strong> wary trout. I revelled<br />

at <strong>the</strong> prospect ot<br />

summer afternoons sitting<br />

in my boat, waiting for a<br />

bright shiny rainbow <strong>to</strong><br />

rise <strong>to</strong> take my imitation.<br />

More often than not, such<br />

time was spent reflecting<br />

on <strong>the</strong> events of my life. I<br />

have realized that, in spite<br />

of what <strong>the</strong> damned infernal<br />

eternal optimists say,<br />

things do not always<br />

work out <strong>the</strong> way <strong>the</strong>y are<br />

supposed <strong>to</strong>.<br />

However, it matters<br />

little. Because when it<br />

comes right <strong>down</strong> <strong>to</strong> it,<br />

<strong>the</strong> very best thing about<br />

fishing is indeed catching<br />

fish. When <strong>you</strong> have a<br />

fish on <strong>the</strong> line, <strong>you</strong> don't<br />

have <strong>to</strong> think about anything<br />

else.<br />

You don't have <strong>to</strong><br />

think about <strong>the</strong> pressures<br />

of day-<strong>to</strong>-day living. You<br />

don't have <strong>to</strong> worry about<br />

finances. You don't have<br />

<strong>to</strong> regret mistakes or try<br />

<strong>to</strong> figure things out. All<br />

<strong>you</strong> have <strong>to</strong> do is stay focused<br />

on <strong>the</strong> fish. For a<br />

few brief moments-nothing<br />

else matters.<br />
