It’s a bittersweet time of the year for me. All the racing is over, the QHRAI Speed Sale is in the past, and winter is getting ready to settle in before long, but the yearlings are here and will become our main focus when the racing ends. I will miss seeing everyone at the track every day. I mean everyone from the horses, grooms, friends we share a shed row with, folks we just say hi to in passing, folks we have conversations with in Becky’s Kitchen, everyone in the race office, the grounds keepers, the gate crew, the jockeys, the morning and race time pony people, the familiar faces in the paddock, in the jock’s room, security folks and even the familiar faces at the betting windows, who know there will be last minute rushes to the windows on Quarter Horse nights, right up until the time that the gates pop open!! Did you ever stop to think about all the people we see and take for granted at the race track? Take a minute in your own mind to reflect on the many people you personally cross paths with at the track!! All of these people are part of our Quarter Horse Family!! Some we know better than others, but all our part of our family!! Since it’s November and Thanksgiving will be here soon, I think it’s appropriate to recognize some things I am thankful for. First of all, for the safe race meet that we have just completed!! In no small part to the stewards, the track crew, and for our Track General Manager, Brian Elmore, for keeping the horses’ and riders’ safety as a priority while we were competing at Hoosier Park’s state of the art facility! We have a lot to be thankful for in that when Tom Mosley presented the QHRAI Application to the Indiana Horse Racing Commission at the October Meeting, it was UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED, and special recognition was given by the new Chairman of the commission, Mr. Bill Diener, about the tremendous experience he had at QH Day at Indiana Downs. Not only does this approval mean that QHRAI will continue be the sole representative for Quarter Horse Racing in Indiana, and we will also be running for our percentage of the purse money received through gaming revenue, but that our REGULATORS recognize the many great things that we are responsible for in Quarter Horse Racing in Indiana. We really do have a SUCCESSFUL Program here in Indiana, and I hope you are all thankful for what we have going on in our great state!! I’m thankful for the group of people who helped make Quarter Horse Day at Hoosier Park a great Success!! From the marketing group at Hoosier Park who were responsible for the Wild West Day Theme and the many activities throughout the day, to the food service staff who made the excellent food for our horsemen’s dinner , and to our own Quarter Horse Family in the race office, jocks room, others on the backside, board members, and even friends of board members (thanks Rachel) who took their time and creativity to decorate the stick horses, Vick Conway and Tom Mosley for auctioning the horses and giving them a great pedigree review, Chris Duke, QHRAI President and Hoosier Park’s own “Rachel” who helped to promote the auction, and all the buyers, whose generous contributions made it possible to give one of our friends, Annie Steele, a gift of $6,000 to offset some of her hardships as she is going through some very trying times while she is battling cancer. Annie, we hope you are feeling completely better, very soon. Finally, I am thankful for about a week of rest after the race meet ends to get recharged to build up to QHRAI’s next MAIN EVENT….. The Stallion Service Auction, 2012 Awards Program and General Membership Meeting. Hold the date for Saturday, January 5th, 2013. We will be meeting again at the Crown Plaza Hotel, Indianapolis Airport. If you are new to the industry and have never attended, we hope to see you there, or if you have been attending this event for the last 20 years or more, I hope you continue to make it a priority to come and enjoy the great opportunity to spend the entire day learning more about the QH- RAI and racing opportunities in Indiana, and visiting with your Quarter Horse Friends. If you have questions about any part of the Racing Program in Indiana, please contact me or one of the QHRAI Board of Directors. We are always happy to provide as much information as possible!! Have a Blessed Thanksgiving Holiday!! Michelle Collins Executive Director Quarter Horse Racing Association of Indiana, Inc. www.QHRAI.net
