CONGRATULATIONS from QHRAI! Photos by Shelley © Fastest Qualifier Delivers in Hoosier Park Classic Final Story by Emily Gaskin, Hoosier Park Fillemup Phil turned in another dominating performance and remained unbeaten in three starts to win the $100,000 Hoosier Park Class Final on Oct. 13 at Hoosier Park Racing & Casino. The brown gelding by Brookstone Bay set the fastest qualifying time of :20.122 for 400 yards in the trials on Sep. 28 and posted a clocking of :20.292 to win by a length in the final and notch his fifth win over Hoosier Park’s surface. Ridden by Oscar Delgado for trainer Danny Lang, Fillemup Phil broke a step behind Lovemelikethat and Shanley Jackson, but the five-year-old gelding quickly found another gear en route to the wire. Fillemup Phil sustained a late closing charge from the heavy betting favorite, Lovemelikethat and Shanley Jackson who finished a game second. Air Born Leader and Garardo Garrido, also a trial winner, overcame being bumped at the start to finish third. Fillemup Phil didn’t disappoint as the bettors’ choice as he returned $6.40 for the win. “He broke hard,” Delgado noted of his mount. “Everyone got a clean break but he is a big horse so he may have been a step behind some of them. The last 100 yards he was just running away from them, he just kept getting stronger and stronger as we went on. He was on his game today.” Bred in Indiana by Guy Trolinger, Fillemup Phil notched his fifth victory in eight starts this season while bankrolling over $100,000. In his last Hoosier Park outing, Fillemup Phil won an allowance event on Sept. 8 with Delgado in the irons, once again. Out of the Premiership mare, Miss Reminice, the brown gelding is owned by Brian Gunder. “This is just a nice horse,”winning trainer Danny Lang noted. “He likes a lot of attention and a lot of care. Brian (Gunder) gave me a great opportunity to train this horse and he’s been racing really great for us.” The Hoosier Park Classic Final was just one of the ten Quarter Horse races offered on the afternoon card. Tagged as Wild West Days, the all Quarter Horse card featured Wild West themed activities, giveaways, and fun for racing fans. Heza Door Prize Drives To Sterlie Bertram Memorial Win Photos by Shelley © Story by stallionesearch.com The lightly raced Heza Door Prize scored his second win in three career starts Saturday afternoon as he caught Successful Dash and Dezenzo to win by a neck in the $111,100 Sterlie Bertram Memorial Stakes at Hoosier Park. Under jockey Cesar Carrilo the 3-year-old son of First Prize Perry completed the 350 yard course into a 10 mph headwind in :18.190 seconds. The $61,105 winner’s purse swelled his career bank account to nearly $65,000. After finishing fourth in his only start at 2, the Jorge Gonzalez trainee set the fastest qualifying time in his first start this season on September 29. Alberto Valdez owns the sorrel gelding out of the Heza Fast Man mare Rectitude. Heath Taylor is the breeder. Randy Thompson’s Successful Dash was a game second, earning $22,220. Thomas Mosley, Jr. trains the Cartel Success gelding out of the Dash For Cash mare Rita Anns Dash. The $22,220 place check boosted his career total to $92,473. Gerardo Garrido rode the Bill Price bred 3-year-old who came into the race off three straight wins. Randy Smith’s owned-and-trained Dezenzo led earlier but had to settle for the show check of $11,110. Diana Moster bred the Ivory James gelding out of Hooked On Laveaux, by First Down Laveaux. Olivo Victor was aboard the earner of $47,248. Completing the field were Will You Perry Me, Dancing With Ducks, Princess Royal Blew, Its Chilly, Shak Em Down Stoney and Chilled Patrona.
