In addition to having a toxic effect on the body, some chemicals can be carcinogenic, mutagenic,
teratogenic, and acutely toxic. These specific chemical hazards are addressed in more detail
under the Particularly Hazardous Substances section in this manual.
VI. CHEMICAL STORAGE
6.1 Chemical storage areas in the academic laboratory setting include central stockrooms,
storerooms, prep rooms, laboratory work areas, storage cabinets, refrigerators and freezers. There
are established legal requirements as well as recommended practices for storing chemicals.
These requirements and guidelines are summarized below. They fall into the following areas:
· General requirements
· Segregation of incompatible chemicals
· Specifications for chemical storerooms
· Chemical storage in laboratories (outside of chemical storerooms)
· Additional storage requirements and recommendations for some specific hazard
chemical classes
Chemicals that are stored improperly can degrade over time. Degraded containers can:
• Release hazardous vapors that are detrimental to the health of laboratory personnel.
• Allow chemicals to become contaminated, which can have an adverse effect on
experiments.
• Release vapors, which in turn can affect the integrity of nearby containers.
• Result in the generation of unknowns.
• Become unstable and/or potentially explosive.
• Result in citation and/or fines from local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
6.2 General Storage Guidelines
It is recommended that laboratories adhere to the following guidelines regarding the safe storage
of chemicals. By implementing these guidelines, laboratories can ensure that safer storage of
chemicals and enhance the general housekeeping and organization of the lab. Proper storage of
chemicals also helps utilize laboratory space in a more efficient manner.
