5. Ensure that all appropriate controls including fume hoods and safety equipment are<br />

available and in good working order in their laboratories. Report non functional or<br />

malfunctioning equipment to EHS.<br />

6. Ensure that all incidents occurring in their laboratories are reported to the <strong>Chemical</strong><br />

<strong>Hygiene</strong> Officer and that a written Incident Report is filed with the CHO and Public<br />

Safety<br />

7. Complete regular inventories of chemicals in their laboratories and provide them to the<br />

designated departmental representatives<br />

8. Supervise the maintenance of Material Safety Data Sheets and ensure laboratory<br />

employee access to MSDS<br />

9. Include provisions for <strong>Chemical</strong> <strong>Hygiene</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> compliance in grant proposals<br />

2.7. Laboratory Employees, Technicians, Users, and Volunteers<br />

Laboratory employees are those who, in the course of their work, are present in the laboratory or<br />

are at risk of possible exposure on a regular or periodic basis. These include laboratory<br />

technicians, instructors, researchers, secretaries, graduate assistants, student aides, part time and<br />

temporary employees. All employees, users, and volunteers must:<br />

1. Know the location of the <strong>Chemical</strong> <strong>Hygiene</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> and be familiar with the CHP<br />

requirements.<br />

2. Maintain all Material Safety Data Sheets that accompany chemicals received<br />

3. Follow procedures and guidelines outlined in the <strong>Chemical</strong> <strong>Hygiene</strong> <strong>Plan</strong><br />

4. Report any unsafe working conditions, faulty fume hoods, or emergency safety<br />

equipment to the laboratory supervisor and <strong>Chemical</strong> <strong>Hygiene</strong> Officer<br />

5. File incident reports with the administration or departmental <strong>Chemical</strong> <strong>Hygiene</strong><br />

Committee person<br />

6. Attend all required health and safety training as mandated by supervisors<br />

7. Be familiar with what to do in the event of an emergency<br />

8. Follow the standard operating procedures for your laboratory and incorporate the<br />

guidelines and requirements outlined in this Laboratory Safety Manual into everyday<br />

practice.<br />

2.8. Buildings and Grounds:<br />

Facilities Management serves as an important conduit for information with regard to buildingwide<br />

issues. This information includes reporting and coordinating routine maintenance issues,<br />

scheduling building shutdowns, and communicating building-wide maintenance and repairs and<br />

building system shutdowns to all occupants.<br />

Laboratory safety responsibilities of the Facilities Management include:<br />

1. Comply with all university health and safety practices and programs by maintaining<br />

common building areas safe and free from hazards.<br />

2. Attend required health and safety training as designated by your supervisor.<br />
