13. Select a qualified and licensed waste disposal vendor to routinely pickup chemical<br />

waste materials. The <strong>Chemical</strong> <strong>Hygiene</strong> Officer will also coordinate hazardous waste<br />

pickup with facility representatives<br />

14. Remain aware of campus wide safety and health related activities<br />

The Environmental Health and Safety office is located in the Service Building Room 212 and is<br />

reachable at (718) 281 5148 or by dialing x5148 from an internal phone.<br />

2.5. Deans/Directors and Department Chairs.<br />

The department chairperson is ultimately responsible for chemical hygiene in his/her department<br />

and must know and understand the goals of the <strong>Chemical</strong> <strong>Hygiene</strong> Program. The duties of the<br />

chairperson are to ensure the:<br />

1. Ensure that all faculty, staff (including temporary employees), visiting scholars,<br />

volunteers, and students working in laboratories within their units comply with all the<br />

requirements of the <strong>Chemical</strong> <strong>Hygiene</strong> <strong>Plan</strong><br />

2. Direct individuals-including, but not limited, to Principal Investigators, researchers,<br />

graduate and undergraduate students, volunteers and visiting scholars, technicians-attend<br />

any required health and safety training before working with hazardous chemicals, bio<br />

hazardous agents, radiation, and/or other physical/mechanical hazards found within their<br />

working or learning environments.<br />

3. Ensure completion of an annual computerized inventory of all chemicals in storage<br />

rooms and laboratories in their department<br />

4. Perform routine identification of expired and unusable chemical stored for disposal.<br />

5. Maintenance of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) for chemicals used in<br />

laboratories in their department<br />

6. Coordinate training with the CHO of all laboratory employees and other departmental<br />

personnel who may come into contact with hazardous chemicals<br />

7. Development of checklists for needed safety equipment in the Department<br />

laboratories, and to ensure prompt acquisition of that equipment<br />

8. Notify the <strong>Chemical</strong> <strong>Hygiene</strong> Officer before a faculty member retires or leaves the<br />

University so that proper laboratory decommissioning occurs. For more information, see<br />

the Lab Move Guide in the Appendix E.<br />

2.6. Principal Investigators (PI’s), Faculty Laboratory Supervisors<br />

Principal investigators, faculty, and other laboratory supervisors have ultimate responsibility for<br />

chemical hygiene in the research or teaching laboratories in which they work. It is their duty to:<br />

1. Know and implement the guidelines and procedures of the <strong>Chemical</strong> <strong>Hygiene</strong> <strong>Plan</strong><br />

2. Write specific operating procedures for handling and disposing of extremely hazardous<br />

substances used in their laboratories and submit these procedures to the <strong>Chemical</strong><br />

<strong>Hygiene</strong> Officer for review. (These policies do not have to be written for minimal risk<br />

<strong>Chemical</strong>s and derivatives)<br />

3. Train laboratory personnel in these operating procedures and ensure the use of proper<br />

control measures<br />

4. Ensure all items identified in EHS inspections are corrected in a timely manner<br />
