at Animal House Shelter. BOTTOM RIGHT: Luigi is curly and fluffy and is a little shy with cameras. The people at the shelter say
Finding a Forever Home
Like people, animals have distinct personalities that make them unique. And, like people,
animals can end up losing their way, needing help to find their place in the world. Animals, like people,
have been affected by the economy. At Animal House Shelter (located in Huntley) it has been a
banner time for finding dogs and cats without homes, medical care, or food. The shelter gives the
animals a warm and friendly environment in which to live, addresses their medical needs, and feeds
their hunger. When a family adopts a dog or cat from the shelter, they can count on the fact that
their new pet is happy and healthy, spayed or neutered, and all up-to-date on shots.
Quintessential Barrington, in an effort to help Animal House Shelter, will feature their dogs and cats
here to encourage adoption. Open your world to the unconditional love that a pet is sure to bring.
At Animal House Shelter, a nonprofit, your adoption fee is tax deductible, and the adoption fees are
lower than other options for adding a pet to your family. Learn more about Animal House, a no-kill
shelter for all breeds of dogs and cats, at www.animalhouseshelter.com.
Home Sweet Home
Fellowship Housing Corporation (FHC) is proud to present its 5th annual gala
on Feb. 2, 2013 at 6 p.m. This year’s honorary chairwoman, Debbie Phelps, is an author,
educator, and single mother. Phelps was able to raise three children and simultaneously
have a successful career in education. She is currently the Director of the Education Foundation
for Baltimore County Public Schools.
This year’s honorary
chairwoman will
be Debbie Phelps.
Phelps is a motivational
speaker
who helps single
moms through the
struggles they are
encountering.
Phelps is a perfect speaker for this event, as FHC is an independent, nonprofit organization
that provides relief to single moms and their children who are homeless or at risk.
Phelps offers hope and support for other single mothers through her inspirational speaking,
and her book, “A Mother for All Seasons: A Memoir.” Her work focuses on her own
experience as a single mother and the challenges she faced during this period of her life.
As part of its relief program, FHC provides homes
for families in need. Mothers must work while saving
money and setting goals to pay off debt and fix their
credit scores. This organization helps an average of 18
families per year, and to date, 10 families have received
homes from Habitat for Humanity.
Stonegate Conference & Banquet Centre is once again the location of this year’s FHC gala.
Event details:
• The gala will be held at the Stonegate Conference
and Banquet Centre in Hoffman Estates.
• Black-tie is optional.
• Tickets are $175. Tickets sell out quickly.
Shine Bright Like a Diamond
BHS-TV Students Win Rihanna’s National Diamonds Contest
By Abe Solberg
“Shine Bright Like a Diamond” is a Rihanna song, but also a mantra for Barrington High School
students. That is what the BHS-TV class was able to showcase, and that is why Rihanna is
coming to BHS. The pop superstar will be visiting sometime in early 2013. Schools around the
country competed to bring Rihanna, attempting to create a unique video that showcases the
many ways their students give back to the community (locally, nationally, and internationally).
The video produced by BHS-TV was selected out of 53 submissions.
Our BHS-TV crew is pictured above. The project was fronted by Peter Chung, a junior, with
help from our teacher, Jeff Doles. Mr. Doles found out about the contest, encouraged us to
compete in it, and he guided us along the way. His unyielding belief in our abilities allowed us
to produce a video worthy of recognition. Making a video takes a lot of time. A five-minute
video can take up to 12 hours just for editing. Add to that more time to schedule, organize,
set up, and film, and a five-minute video can turn into days of work. All work was done at BHS,
though most was done after school. The entire process was supervised by Mr. Doles, who
donated his free time to help us. “The project required the efforts of the entire production
team,” Chung said, “through long hours of work, we created a video to be proud of.”
While it was technically a video contest, the video was only a vehicle to highlight the philanthropic
efforts of the BHS student community. We set out to show where and how BHS
students give back. While we made a quality video, we are not the students responsible for
bringing Rihanna; that credit goes to the countless students who have donated their time,
effort, and money into various causes and have truly made a difference. Without those
students there could be no video. “This win is not just a victory for BHS-TV, it is a victory for
all the philanthropic students and organizations at Barrington,” Catherine Geotze said.
