Literacy in a Flash
After school on June 6, more than 600 students, school staff and parents gathered outside
Lines Elementary School to break out in dance. The pep rally, complete with a rehearsed flash mob dance
(to the song “Dynamite” by Taio Cruz), was a planned celebration following a year-long effort to support literacy.
The school raised $25,000 to purchase thousands of new books for the media center and literacy library.
The project included the student body goal of reading 5,372 books, a $15,000 matching grant from a family, and
a paper link chain with $1 links purchased to support the cause. For every $75 donated, a decorative
tile is displayed with the names of the donors in the entryway of the school. Despite the intense heat of the
afternoon, books were raised up along with the cheers of a successful campaign.

Generosity in Creases
Grove Avenue School students
folded 4,500 paper cranes as part of
a disaster relief project for Japan tsunami
victims and families. The project
was linked to a clothing brand, which
donates one item of apparel to Japan
for each origami paper crane folded by
an American child.
“The beauty of this project and what
set it apart from other relief efforts
Grove has supported is that it connects
generations,” said Grove Principal
Cindy Kalogeropoulos. “We had
students teaching parents and other
adults how to fold cranes, so there
was this greater sense of purpose,
inspiration and a network of learning
that gave real meaning to the activity.”

Barrington Chapter Lyric Opera of Chicago (BCLOC) held its
end of season program Sunday, April 10, at Biltmore Country Club in
North Barrington. More than 60 members and guests attended the
afternoon soiree, “Food for the Soul and Body.” Irish soprano Maire
O’Brien and Lyric’s Director of Education Mark Riggleman entertained
with operatic influence on songs from Broadway musicals.
While enjoying music and Italian buffet style lunch, guests saw the
2011-2012 slate of officers and committee members sworn in. Among

IFI Celebrity Golf Outing
The Illinois Fatherhood Initiative (IFI) once again is
hosting the Tom Dreesen Celebrity Golf Classic, Friday, August
12, at Bolingbrook Golf Club in Bolingbrook. The guest
list includes many of the event’s regulars, including Smokey
Robinson and the event’s host, entertainer Tom Dreesen.
In the past, the outing has featured high-profile celebrities
and athletes such as Jeremy Roenick, Tim Reid, Jim Mcmahon,
Lou Holtz, Mike Eruzione and many more.
IFI Founder David Hirsch said the outing is IFI’s main fundraiser
of the year and provides a great opportunity to contribute
to IFI’s mission: to connect children and fathers by
promoting responsible fathering and helping equip men to

the event’s golfing, auction and fundraising support IFI.

A Fellowship Housing family
Rebuilding Hope
Fellowship Housing, a non-profit serving homeless
and at-risk single mother families, partnered
with Willow Creek Community Church throughout
the month of April for a “Celebration of Hope.” Event
volunteers lent a hand in construction projects,
creating homes and rehabbing apartment and office
space for Fellowship Housing, during weekends and
occasional weekdays in April.
“When families enter our program, they feel as if
there are no more options and homelessness is waiting
for them,” said Brooke Bartlow, executive director
for Fellowship Housing. “When they graduate our
program, they are confident in their future because
they have hope.”
In addition to instilling hope for single-mother families,
Fellowship Housing programs give single mothers
financial literacy training, helping them to rebuild
their credit, pay off their debt, and build a savings
account. The skills provide better financial traction,
making them more likely candidates for Habitat for
Humanity.

Lion Club Hosts Annual Golf Outing
The Barrington Lions Club held its 30th annual Charity Golf Outing,
May 9, at Chalet Hills Golf Club in Cary. More than 140 golfers came out for
the event, which is the Lions Club’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Proceeds
from this year’s outing doubled the proceeds from last year’s event. The
event’s Gold underwriter, M.J. Miller & Co., gave 3 golfers a chance to win $1
million in a hole-in-one contest, however none were able to sink a lucky shot.

The Women’s Board of the Chicago
Zoological Society hosted its 30th annual
Whirl Fundraiser, on Saturday, April 16,
at Brookfield Zoo. This year’s event, “Whirl
on the Shimmering Seas,” celebrated 50
years of caring for dolphins at Brookfield
Zoo. More than 700 business and civic leaders
from Chicago enjoyed cocktails and hors
d’oeuvres in an underwater viewing area,
part of the zoo’s Seven Seas exhibit.
Guests were entertained with a live dolphin
demonstration as well as dancing to the
music of Maggie Speaks. A raffle and live
auction gave guests a chance to win prizes
such as a Neiman Marcus shopping spree, an
opportunity to name zoo animals, a unique
dining experience for 12 at Brookfield Zoo
and other glamorous prizes.
Proceeds from the event totaled approximately
$1.3 million, which will go to support
the animals at Brookfield Zoo as well as
the Chicago Zoological Society’s conservation
and education programs. The Women’s
Board has supported Brookfield Zoo since
1992 through community outreach, conservation
programs, and special projects.

Girl Scout and Barrington High School sophomore
Taylor Foderaro was awarded with the prestigious Girl Scout
Gold Award on Sunday, May 22 at the annual Young Women
of Distinction ceremony in Union, Ill. The Gold Award is the
highest honor that a Girl Scout can achieve. The requirements
of the Award culminate in the completion of a take-action
community service project. Foderaro’s community service
project involved teaching volunteers how to make fleece-tie
blankets for animals at the On Angels’ Wings Animal Shelter.
“I am very passionate about animal welfare,” Foderaro said,
“and hope to have a future career helping animals in some
capacity.”

Barrington’s Teens for Teens Initiatives,
a grant-based organization dedicated
to improving the lives of disadvantaged
youths, will sponsor “The Great Gatsby
Gala,” September 17, at Inverness Golf Club.
“The night will be filled with the excitement
and the glamour of the Roaring Twenties,”
said event Co-chairwoman Sue Hyde.
The gala will include dining, live music,
cocktails, dancing and an auction, with
proceeds going towards the support of
programs that work towards helping disadvantaged
youths. Last year’s recipients
included Hope Alive, which provides a safe afterschool environment for children near the
former site of Chicago’s Cabrini Green; Teens for Teens, which provides Barrington eighthgrade
student with hands-on volunteer experience; and Warriors with a Future, which provides
academic and personal support to promising young men who are at risk to drop out of
high school, join a gang or face violent death.

Local Golfer Swinging into History
Barrington Resident and professional golfer Jim Sobb competed in the 2011 Senior PGA
Championship in Louisville, Ky., Thursday, May 26-Sunday, May 29. Sobb shot a 154 in his
first two rounds, missing the Saturday cut by only 6 strokes. Sobb competed against some
of golf’s most recognizable names including Nick Price, Cory Pavin, Fred Funk, Craig Stadler
as well as this year’s champion, Tom Watson.
“It’s very competitive,” said Sobb before teeing off on Thursday, “but I try to not get intimidated.
I will just focus on my game and try to have fun.”
Sobb qualified for this year’s event in October 2010 by finishing tied for 21st in the 2010
Senior PGA professional National Championship in Palm Springs, Calif.
In May, Sobb made history when he became the first golfer in Illinois PGA (IPGA) history to
win both the IPGA Senior Match Play Championship and IPGA Match Play Championship in
the same year. And even more impressive, he won them both in a two-week period. In the
two weeks, May 9-19, Sobb went on playing streaks of 5 matches in 3 days and a separate
one of 6 matches in 3 days.
“His endurance was remarkable,” said IPGA Senior Director of Operations Bill Ibrahim. “To
see something like this, that has never been done, was fantastic for the IPGA. Jim is the
ultimate competitor.”
However, Ibrahim was quick to add that his appreciation for Sobb goes beyond the golf
course.
“He is a great ambassador for the game,” Ibrahim said. “You can see it when he talks, you
can see it when people listen to him. He is a larger than life figure around here and it is great
to work with him.”
Sobb, who is also the head golf professional at Ivanhoe Country Club in Mundelein, said that
his work as a competitor on the course is not as important as his work for the IPGA.
“I play the game, but I don’t play for a living,” Sobb said. “I play
for living, promoting, and teaching the game.”
In addition to winning his third match play title and sixth Illinois
PGA major title this year, Sobb was named 2010 Illinois
PGA Player of the Year.

What is your favorite piece of public art in the Barrington area?
I asked syndicated cartoonist Charles Boyce and copywriter Tamara Tabel.

When I inquire about favorite public art pieces, most people pause and then shrug their
shoulders. I prompt them by suggesting the sculpture park at the Barrington Area Library, the
Memorial statues in downtown Barrington, and the bronze horses at the Arboretum of South
Barrington. My asking generated some curiosity.
One person said: “Is there any public
art?” Another asked: “Do you have a list of
where each piece is?” Perhaps it’s time to
create such a list. I believe this is a case of
people not stopping to smell the roses, or in
this situation, view the art.
However, Charles Boyce was ready to answer
the question. His favorite art piece is in
the Memorial Park on Hough Street in Barrington (across from the school, where the United
Methodist Church once stood). Titled the “Barrington Fire and Police Memorial,” it was created
by artist John Ketner. Charles says the bronze statues fill a purpose.

“The theme ‘Hero’ is still fresh in people's mind. I noticed the work as they were erecting it
several years ago. You can't help but think of 9/11,” he said. He believes a strong and immediate
theme is important for public art.
Tamara Tabel chose the bronze statue of children playing at the entrance to Citizens Park
(near the waterfall) in Barrington as her favorite. It is called “Acrobat Kids” and was donated by
Citizens for Open Land.
“I love the energy of the piece – it captures the exuberance of children at play. It makes me
smile every time I see it to remember my own children when they were younger.” She likes the
outward pose of the children’s’ faces. “It reminds me that public art can be intimate. It is created
with the idea in mind that it will be shared.”
Both Charles and Tamara are members of the Barrington Cultural Commission, an organization
formed to position Barrington as a cultural hub. Tamara is also a poet and president of the Barrington
Writers Workshop. Charles is retired from the “Chicago Tribune” and a member of the
Barrington Cultural Arts Center.
Public art is accessible to all, staged for viewer pleasure. The sculptures at the Barrington Area
Library are on temporary loan from area artists so they may vary from year to year. Other art
forms have become permanent fixtures in our community landscape. As the seasons change
they take on a different look and feel. There is no cost for admission.

a crowd of close to 2,000 people. Called
“Barrington’s Biggest Birthday Party,” the event set a record in Illinois for the most new
relay teams (100 added since last year’s event) and, with 17,000 cupcakes set atop a
custom-built tower, event chairwomen Joanne Dalessandro and her daughter, Dina, are
awaiting news from the World Records Academy to see if the RFL earned a new world
record for most cupcakes at an event. Proceeds totaling $364,000 have been counted,
and are still climbing. The Duchossois Family Foundation provided a matching grant of
$50,000. A first-ever cancer survivor reception and dinner was offered to 100 attendees.
National American Cancer Society TV spokesperson, Herb Porter, was joined by
local officials and business leaders, as well as children’s groups, to offer their support
for the event.
