In more than 200 vintage postcards and photos, repeat author Ken Munson shares the history of the Barrington area, giving readers a chance to reconnect to the history that shaped the community. Barrington has enriched the area’s history from the days of the Potawatomi Indians through the railroad age. Later, Barrington became the stage for relaxed country living away from the busy financial and industrial districts of Chicago. Captured in the historical postcard photographs are businesses, churches and architecture from days gone by. Author Ken Munson has been a historic preservationist in Barrington, beginning with the Barrington Centennial Committee in 1963. He served as a board member and past president of the Barrington Area Historical Society and curator for the Lake County Museum in Wauconda. Munson was named the first director of the Henry Ford Estate and taught in the Graduate Historic Preservation Planning Program at Eastern Michigan University. He continues to serve as a consultant to local historical agencies and museums, and as a commissioner for the Cultural and Historical Commission in Wyandotte, Mich. The 100 Club Valor Awards Barrington Hills resident Joe Ahern, executive director of the 100 Club of Chicago, oversees this nonprofit that provides for the surviving spouses and dependents of law enforcement officers, firefighters and paramedics, who are stationed in Cook County, who lose their lives in the line of duty. The organization was founded in 1966. TM Since its inception, the 100 Club of Chicago has served 243 families with more than $8.6 million, of which over $4 million was devoted to educational assistance for the dependents. Within 24 hours following the loss of life in the line of duty, Ahern and the 100 Club of Chicago presents an initial check for $15,000 to cover the family’s immediate financial needs. Several weeks later, a second meeting is held with the family and the Club will present an additional check to cover a portion of the family’s debts. The Educational Assistance Program of the 100 Club of Chicago provides financial assistance for dependents for their undergraduate, vocational education and graduate studies. Currently, there are 22 dependents receiving assistance from the program and there are an additional 42 children who will be eligible for assistance as they reach college age.
