Finally Ready to Retire at 63
Having been re-sprung, re-stuffed and re-upholstered since their installation in 1949,
the auditorium seats at Barrington High School are in need of replacement.
Approximately 41,524 people each year have attended performances in those seats –
not including regular school use and rehearsal time.
Having held up extremely well through their long service, it was apparent that many things
have changed since they were installed. For example, people are bigger. The Center for Disease
Control’s Advanced Data from Vital and Health Statistics reports that the average American has
increased at least one inch in height and more than 24 pounds in weight since just the 1960s.
Most audiences are currently quite close, and sometimes literally overlapping. The existing seats
are 19” wide and 24” high. The proposed new seats would be 24” wide by 31”-33”high.
The Barrington Fine Arts Boosters are kicking off the fundraising effort for new seats.
February 10 they are hosting a “Best Seat in the House” dinner dance at the Onion Pub
in Lake Barrington. If you would like to make a donation to this effort, please send checks
to the BHS Fine Arts Boosters, c/o the BHS fine Arts Department, 616 West Main Street,
Barrington, IL, 60010.
Donations can be made with plaque sponsorship names on seats for $250. For information
