A Heavenly Welcome
Church unity was a heartwarming centerpiece for Rev. Jim
Swarthout’s installation as the new executive director of
the Samaritan Counseling Center of the Northwest Suburbs,
located in Barrington. On November 2, Rev. Swarthout, an
Episcopal priest, was supported by a host of clergy as he was
handed the baton of leadership from the Samaritan Center’s
founding executive director, Rev. Mary Tudela. The installation
service was held at Saint Anne Catholic Community Church,
and was followed by a community effort to receive and redirect
100,000 diapers delivered in a semi-trailer truck in the church
parking lot, courtesy of Kimberly Clark. Helpers divided the
special delivery into numerous trucks belonging to local agencies
that assist families in need. The day’s messages of hope, faith
and family reflect the mission of the nonprofit Samaritan Center,
with its purpose to provide inter-denominational, faith-based
counseling services.
On December 11, a contingent of Barrington police and fire officers and staff got together to do what they do best – to be of service and help
those in need. Yet this was no ordinary call to duty, but instead this event was planned and worked on all year by the Barrington Police Benevolent
Association (BPBA). Since 1997, the BPBA has reached out to offer a chance to ‘shop with a cop’ – the last 10 years doing so at Target – for
children whose families are in need. Officers identify the families by working with Barrington schools to learn of Barrington residents whose
children could benefit from this generous and fun event.
The members of the BPBA organize fundraisers and have welcomed donations from area businesses. Coopers Pizza offered a pizza day, where
officers made the pizzas and the proceeds were donated to help support the 32 children this year who attended the special shopping day.
Target donated one girl’s and one boy’s bike that were raffled off to lucky winners. Breakfast treats welcomed the children who received written
invitations to attend, and all were offered a friendly uniformed helper to take them through the store. This year, about $3,200 was available to buy
clothes, shoes, and other gifts. By now, members of the BPBA are most likely making plans to support some children for this year’s holiday season.
and Much More
The Barrington Madrigals recently returned from a three-day
whirlwind tour in Washington, D.C. They are led by Nancie
Tobison and included 19 BHS students: Alexa Argianas,
Katherine Badskey, Ben Bruce, Dina Dalessandro, Rose DiGiulio,
Michael Hyatt, Gabi King, Stephen Martino, Anna Mehringer,
John Moran III, Stefani Moranski, Oliver Pringle, Silpa Raju,
Andrea Schumann, John Shattuck, Elizabeth Stermer,
Kayla Stearns, Michael Waldron, and Tannah Wieneke.
The Madrigals performed for almost three hours in the White
House (with only a 10-minute break) to a heartwarming stream
of White House staff and their guests. It was a Christmas Open
House where staff could invite a few guests to come and enjoy
the beautiful rooms decorated in Christmas splendor. Other
wonderful singing venues included the White House National
Tree, the Newseum, the Kennedy Center, the Marriott Hotel
and other occasional stops along their busy tour schedule.
This was a first time visit for many choir students to visit
Washington, D.C. and also an opportunity of a lifetime for
everyone including the parent chaperones and Dr. Tom Leonard,
who was with us every step of the way. Our Barrington
Madrigals brought holiday cheer to every monument they
stopped at as the general public jumped in to grab photos with
them too.
“We are pleased to inform you that Flint Creek Savanna has been selected by the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Chicago Wilderness for a 2011 Conservation
These practices create and protect habitat for a variety of native plant and animal species
and result in important environmental benefits for both people and nature.
Your commitment to your site, and that of your active and growing volunteer-base, are to be
commended. You have enhanced the habitat and biodiversity of the prairie, marsh, and oak
The entire Board and new directors wish to thank Founding Executive and Artistic Director,
Solange Sior, for her vision in spearheading the creation of O.P.E.R.A. over a decade ago,
and her tireless leadership of this vital organization. With the financial support of the City
of Elgin, the name was changed to Elgin Opera in the fall of 2008. The Board is also grateful
for the years of service that recently retired board members Rosemary Schroeder and Honorary
Member Norm McCabe have devoted to the organization.
Plans are already under way for new performance programming, recitals, and educational
opportunities in 2012.
