<strong>Green</strong> <strong>buildings</strong> <strong>for</strong> <strong>Doha</strong> <strong>College</strong> on anvil
THE new <strong>Doha</strong> <strong>College</strong> campus,
which is likely to open by 2015,
will have state-of-the-art green
building solutions.
As part of the construction plans
<strong>for</strong> the new campus, five prestigious
architecture and design companies
from the UK presented their
design proposals <strong>for</strong> the new school
building in <strong>Doha</strong> on Sunday.
The five world renowned architectural
firms, namely RHWL Architects,
Broadway Malyan, Penoyre
& Prasad LLP, Jestico + Whiles
Architects and FeildenCleggBradleyStudios,
had been short listed
recently from an earlier group of 13
firms to design the new campus.
All the five companies are now
vying <strong>for</strong> the opportunity to build a
new campus <strong>for</strong> one of Qatar’s oldest
British curriculum schools.
During the event, <strong>Doha</strong> <strong>College</strong>
Principal Mark Leppard highlighted
that the new school building
would integrate classic
British practice with international
concepts.
“What we are doing now is that
we are getting feedback from all
the students, parents and staff.
Then we are going to look into the
commercial bid from the companies
and at that point we’ll make a
final decision based on the feedback,
our experience and the
commercial bid. We want to open
the new campus by September
2015. In the next six weeks, we’ll
have a gala launch to announce
the winning design,” he said.
All the proposed schemes
which were presented featured
their own unique environmental
and sustainable concepts such as
efficient energy use and the use of
local resources. The new campus
will accommodate as many as
1,600 students. Parking schemes
were also designed to accommodate
about 200 cars.
The new building would also
highlight traditional Qatari values
and community integration.

other social facilities were
designed to be accessible to community
members.
Michael Barratt, RHWL Architects
Managing Director <strong>for</strong> the Middle
East, who is also working on other
Qatar Foundation projects in <strong>Doha</strong>,
presented a design which featured
Ox<strong>for</strong>d and Cambridge themed
courtyards, low and zero carbon technology
<strong>buildings</strong> and a replica of the
British street within the campus.
The Broadway Malyan design is
founded around the themes of
growth and transition. The design
employs extensive natural lighting
and recycled water. It is designed to
use 33 percent less energy than a
standard school of equivalent size.
According to Penoyre &
Prasad’s presentation, the new
campus will have a canopy of
trees. The design features the use
of solar thermal energy and recycling,
reduction of waste, a wireless
network across the campus,
waving roof, terraces and courtyards
<strong>for</strong> every department.
The design from Jestico +
Whiles Architects features the
arrangements of separate blocks
wherein <strong>buildings</strong> are styled on
the north-south direction to create
natural shades <strong>for</strong> the children.
Carbon indicators are also
placed in each classroom to motivate
the students to be more environmentally-conscious.
FeildenCleggBradley Studios’
design features a series of pocket
gardens and a central entrance
area with the proportions similar to
that of the Museum of Islamic Art.
Underneath the building will be
labyrinths to cool the air and solar
panels which will generate 30-40
percent of the school’s electricity.

THE applicability
of personalised
medicine has moved
one step closer
thanks to a
research study
undertaken by
WCMCQ’s new
Professor of
Physiology and
Biophysics
Karsten Suhre. In
one of the most
comprehensive
investigations of
its kind, the genetic
variance in human metabolism was
analysed and new insights into a range of
common diseases were discovered.
The study, recently published in the
prestigious Journal ‘Nature’ and titled
‘Human metabolic individuality in biomedical
and pharmaceutical research’,
establishes metabolomics as an intermediate
to providing a biological link that
contributes to the understanding of the
genetic effects and more effectively
impacts discovery and development of
individualised biomarkers and therapies.
Suhre led the study which was collaboration
between European research centres,
prior to taking up his position as
director of the Bioin<strong>for</strong>matics Core at
WCMCQ. Suhre said, “This study suggests
that testing biochemical levels, not
withstanding inborn errors of metabolism,
is an excellent way of understanding
individual uniqueness and can potentially
increase the development of personalised
medicine.”
The research project looked <strong>for</strong> genetic
influences on levels of more than 250
compounds in blood, including lipids,
sugars, vitamins, amino acids and others.
They discovered variants that have a significant
effect on the levels of these compounds,
and there<strong>for</strong>e on the underlying
biological and disease processes. The
findings provide new insights <strong>for</strong> many
disease-related associations that have
been reported in previous studies, including
cardiovascular and kidney disorders,
type 2 diabetes, cancer, gout, thrombosis
and Crohn’s disease.
“Often the effects of variants discovered
in genome wide association analyses
are modest and we then have a poor
understanding of the biological mechanisms
behind the associations. However,
this approach can overcome these problems
and possibly in<strong>for</strong>m individualised
therapy or treatment,” Suhre said.
BAYT.COM AND YOUGOV SURVEY
72% of Qatar’s residents social network online <strong>for</strong> 3 hours

A BAYT.COM survey shows that 72 percent
of Qatar’s respondents spend three
or more hours online every day. It has
further revealed that the predominant
reason <strong>for</strong> going online to participate is
social activities.
The survey, conducted by job site
Bayt.com and research and consulting
organisation YouGov, was to investigate
internet usage in the region.
According to the survey results, 40 percent
of Qatar-based respondents claim to
connect with friends via email every day,
and 44 percent of the same demographic
connect with friends through social networking
sites.
Watching video clips and listening to
music online are also popular and a significant
proportion of daily usage comes from
online job hunting, with 43 percent of
Qatar’s respondents using the Internet to
seek employment.
The least popular daily online activities, in
terms of the percentage of Qatar’s survey
responses who have never accessed the facility
are downloading podcasts (42 percent),
playing online games (41 percent), uploading
video clips to video sharing websites (39 percent),
participating in online courses (37 percent)
and uploading photos to a photo sharing
website (28 percent).
“There is a definite trend across the region
that leans towards Internet usage <strong>for</strong> social
purposes as well as <strong>for</strong> job hunting and
career related activities. This data is encouraging
and it further bolsters Bayt.com’s
<strong>for</strong>ay into the career-centric social arena,”
said Amer Zureikat, VP Sales at Bayt.com.
Results asking survey-takers to state all
social networks to which they belong
proved that Facebook is the main site of
choice. Out of all of Qatar’s respondents,
only 6 percent claimed to not have a
Facebook profile. ‘Other’ social networking
sites (excluding Netlog (10 percent) and
Hi5 (14 percent)) are ranked second with
40 percent, Twitter earned 28 percent, followed
closely by LinkedIn (27 percent).
Only 5 percent claimed to have no social
networking profiles at all.
Facebook usage is especially high, with 69
percent logging onto the site on a daily basis,
whereas only 25 percent visit Twitter every
day. A majority of Qatar’s users (a combined
figure of 54 percent) spend between 30
minutes and 3 hours a day on Facebook,
with another 15 percent claiming to be
signed into their account most times of the
day. Twitter, on the other hand, has 39 percent
of users who log in <strong>for</strong> less than 30 minutes
a day, and 39 percent who log in <strong>for</strong>
between 30 minutes and one hour.
In Qatar, 48 percent of survey-takers claim
to use social networking websites at their
place of work. The main reason <strong>for</strong> not
accessing such sites while in the office are due
to the employee not having time (61 percent),
rather than sites being blocked (17 percent).
Statistics across the region tend
towards lack of online purchases. And
Qatar is no exception. There is a slight
tendency <strong>for</strong> more people to order airline
tickets online more than anything else.
The trend across the region is <strong>for</strong> people
to access political news online as opposed to
business or lifestyle/leisure news. In Qatar,
57 percent access political news while 52
percent access business news and 46 percent
access lifestyle and leisure news online.
In terms of the amount of time spent
online every day, 28 percent of Qatar
respondents are online <strong>for</strong> less than two
hours a day, while 35 percent use the
Internet <strong>for</strong> between three and four hours
daily and 22 percent claim to surfing the
web <strong>for</strong> more than six hours every day.
When it comes to online access, Google
Chrome is Qatar’s browser of choice, opted
<strong>for</strong> by 39 percent of respondents.
The data <strong>for</strong> the Bayt.com Internet usage
in the Middle East survey was collected
online between August 1 and 24, 2011, with
8,981 respondents (82 percent male and
rest women), representing Saudi Arabia,
Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait,
Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Syria,
Tunisia, the UAE and Qatar.

QNRF unveils new cycle
of research programme

QATAR National Research
Fund (QNRF) held a public
presentation to announce the
launch of the fifth cycle of its
National Priorities Research
Programme (NPRP) and new
website at Education City on
Sunday.
The event was aimed at outlining
major changes and
enhancements <strong>for</strong> research
fund applicants and the general
public.
It was also aimed at highlighting
policies and rules guiding
this year’s edition of the
programme.
The NPRP is an annual
international resesarch funding
initiative with grants of up
to $350,000 per year <strong>for</strong> projects
that span from one to
three years.
Speaking at the event, QNRF
Executive Director Dr Abdul
Sattar Altaie, who launched the
new website, said that some
changes had been introduced
to make both the submission of
applications and vetting
processes easier and faster.
He said, unlike in the pervious
editions, the fund would
adhere strictly to the deadline
<strong>for</strong> the submission of applications
and all necessary documents.

processes and enquiries

regarding the fifth cycle of the
NPRP would be handled
online.
“QNRF will only respond to
enquiries received on the website
via the ‘QNRF support
link’. Enquiries received via
emails or telephone will be
declined without exception,”
he said.
“All vetted proposals will be
tested <strong>for</strong> plagiarism and in
any case where there is evidence
of possible plagiarism
QNRF will <strong>for</strong>ward the evidence
to the authorities of the
relevant submitting institution
in order that they may
conduct their own investigation
and take the necessary
action in accordance with
their policy. Furthermore,
QNRF reserves the right to
put such perpetrators in a
black list,” he added.
Asked about the expected
number of proposals to be submitted,
Dr Sattar said, “It
depends on the enthusiasm of
the researchers and their
prompt attention to the deadline.
The number of applications
has been increasing every
year. Last year, we received 740
research proposals. I hope we
will have more entries this time
around. Our plan is to fund
between 20 and 23 percent of
the submitted applications.”
In her presentation, NPRP
Programme Director Noor al
Merekhi highlighted the
changes incorporated in this
year’s edition of the programme.
These include the
increase of publications by
Lead Principal Investigators
(LPIs) applying <strong>for</strong> the programme
to a minimum of five
books, articles or journals,
introduction of new features
in letter of intent (LoI), automatic
activation of proposal
preparation channel after
submission of LoI and filling
of rebuttal <strong>for</strong> resubmitted
proposals online.
Other changes in the programme
are the introduction
of declaration of original submission
to QNRF, publication
section in proposal preparation
and ethical compliance section.
Explaining the conditions <strong>for</strong>
proposal approval, Noor said
that international applicants
must have Qatar-based collaborators,
adding that 65 percent
of the total budget must be
expended in Qatar and that 50
percent of the activities of the
research project must take
place in Qatar.
Noor said submission of letters
of intent which began on
September 13 would close on
October 11 while submission of
proposals would close on
December 6.
Kais Abdul Mawjood, a technical
laboratory coordinator at
Texas A&M University in
Qatar, praised QNRF <strong>for</strong>
organising the programme.
“This is a helpful and
in<strong>for</strong>mative programme. It
has cleared all the questions
the researchers might have
regarding the application procedures
this year. The new
website is also interactive and
easy to use,” he said.
Taxi2 likely to hit
stand early next
year: Khamissi

EGYPTIAN writer Kaled al
Khamissi, the author of the
famous novel Taxi, said he was
trying to capture the changes
taking place in the post-
Mubarak Cairo in his second
novel, Taxi2, which would be
published early next year.
Taxi2 will also reflect the
images of Egypt during the six
months of revolution, he said.
Talking to Qatar Tribune on
the sideline of the signing ceremony
of his novel in <strong>Doha</strong>, al
Khamissi explained the reasons
behind his decision to
write another novel named
Taxi.
“Many people encouraged
me to write a second Taxi after
the success of the first novel. I
had never thought of writing a
second story with the same
name. But big changes in the
post-revolution Egypt convinced
me to do so,” he said.
Taxi, which was published
in 2005, is said to have <strong>for</strong>etold
the Egyptian revolution
which changed the Mubarak
regime. French newspaper Le
Monde had described the Taxi
as a novel that “illustrates the
revolution”.
When asked how he predicted
the revolution years be<strong>for</strong>e
it really took place, al Khamissi
said, “In 2005, I felt <strong>for</strong> the
first time that there was a public
discontent simmering and I
could feel that people were
eager <strong>for</strong> change. That made
me desirous to write about the
turmoil in the making on the
streets of Cairo.
“I was not trying to predict a
revolution. Rather I was trying
to portray the public anger,
frustration and rejection after
Mubarak’s regime <strong>for</strong>ged the
elections in 2005 and the economic
crisis in the country,” he
said.
In his first novel, al
Khamissi depicted the polluted
streets of Cairo through 58
encounters with the city taxi
drivers. In each ride, a different
issue was raised and he
discussed the problems with
them from different perspectives.
The novel takes readers
on a rollercoaster of emotions
as bumpy and noisy as the
city’s potholed and chaotic
streets.
Commenting on the novel,
the Foreign Policy Magazine
said Taxi is brilliant because of
the way it captured the points
made by the cab drivers.
Though al Khamissi was
reluctant to answer a question
regarding whether or not his
second novel will try to predict
what could happen in the postrevolution
Egypt, he did say
that one of the main gains of
the Egyptian revolution is that
people know that they have
the ability to make a change.
And, that is the key to a better
future in Egypt, he said.

THE Qatar National
Convention Centre will host
the TESOL International
Association’s ‘Putting
Research into Practice’ conference.
The three-day conference,
which will begin on October 1,
will bring together experts
from around the region and
across the world to focus on
key areas of applied research
in the field of English language
teaching. The conference
is being organised by
Teachers of English to
Speakers of Other Languages,
Inc (TESOL) in collaboration
with university partners in
Qatar, Qatar TESOL, TESOL
Arabia and other TESOL affiliates
in the region.
“Increased English language
proficiency is a strategic goal
<strong>for</strong> Qatar and many countries
around the world today.
Learning English should not
mean losing Arabic, however,
and figuring out how to do this
in the best way possible
requires extensive research,”
said conference chair Dudley
Reynolds, teaching professor
of English at Carnegie Mellon
University in Qatar.
“At Carnegie Mellon we feel
it is extremely important to
the success of our university
and Education City that our
teachers understand why certain
teaching practices work
in some situations and different
practices work in others,”

Downtown development.
The restoration and preservation
of these properties,

The assigned team will
work on the restoration of
four historic heritage houses

of the Indian Business and

(IBPN) Mission in <strong>Doha</strong>,

said: “The main objective
of this meeting is to discuss
trade and investment
opportunities in Qatar.
Indian companies have a
clearly defined vision
regarding international
ventures. Most of the
chemicals, steel, engineering
and construction companies
in India set aside
50 per cent of their profits
<strong>for</strong> their international
investments. Most of the
Indian companies are trying
to expand beyond
their territories and willing
to go wherever there is
an opportunity.”
He added: “Major construction
companies are
looking <strong>for</strong> projects in
Qatar which is to see a
construction boom in the
next five years. As India
successfully hosted the
Commonwealth Games,
Qatari companies are
curious about the Indian
expertise in building
infrastructure and stadiums
which may be tapped
<strong>for</strong> the World Cup 2022 to
be hosted by Qatar. There
are also opportunities <strong>for</strong>
Qatari businessmen to
invest in India.”
According to the latest
report released by FICCI,
India has received Foreign
Direct Investment (FDI)
to the tune of $160 billion
and provides significant
opportunities <strong>for</strong> <strong>for</strong>eign
investors in construction,
food processing, power
sector and engineering
industry. The construction
sector needs $50 billion
in the next five years
and 100 percent FDI is
permitted <strong>for</strong> construction
of townships, housing
complexes, hotels and
hospitals. India also provides
tremendous opportunities
in the power sector
as during 2012-2017,
$235.1 billion will be
invested in this sector.
India is projected to be the
world’s second largest
producer by 2015-2016,
and this sector is expected
to grow at 10 percent
between 2010 and 2013.
