THE first-ever gathering of TEDx
organisers, hosted by the Doha
Film Institute (DFI), was inaugurated
at the Katara Amphitheatre
on Monday.
Bringing together 650 representatives
from 90 countries, the
week-long event will aim to
make TED’s guiding motto of
‘ideas worth spreading’ through
workshops, collaborative projects,
regional and inter-regional
brainstorming sessions, talks
and cultural activities.
HE Sheikha al Mayassa bint
Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani, in
a recorded statement,
expressed the importance of
hosting such events in the
country.
“Many stories of the Arab
world are told from a Western
perspective, and it’s time for
the Arab world to tell their own
stories through their own voices.
It’s not a question of agreeing
or disagreeing, but a matter
of authenticity. I think that
TEDx is doing exactly that. It’s
providing a platform for everybody
to share their ideas. Have
fun, enjoy yourselves, meet new
people, accept their differences
and embrace their ideas”, she
said.
The opening programme was
the only part of the conference
open to the general public and
sold out well before the night.
The speakers included Raghava
KK, an artist, William Noel, a
scholar, Wolfgang Kessling,
physicist, and Fahad bin
Mohammed al Attiya, chairman
of Qatar National Food Security
Programme, among others.
TED is a non-profit organisation
devoted to ‘ideas worth
spreading’ which started as a
four-day conference in California
25 years ago. Some of the world’s
leading thinkers and speakers
have participated in TED events,
which are available free online,
for everyone who is interested
to have access to them.
TEDx is a programme of independent,
local, self-organised
events which bring people
together for a TED-like experience.
To date, there have been
138 TEDx events in the Middle
East including Bahrain, Oman,
Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and
others.
Qatar literacy meet on April 19

QATAR University’s College of
Education will host the first annual
Qatar Literacy Conference on April
19. The meet will feature 41 speakers.
Over 200 delegates from across
the region, including Qatar, Saudi
Arabia and Egypt will participate in
the meet. The conference is being
organised in association with
Bloomsbury Qatar Publishing,
International Reading Association
(IRA), United States and Middle
East Partnership Initiative (MEPI).
The conference is designed for
educators, parents, policy makers,
publishers, and all others who are
engaged in helping students of all
ages achieve literacy in English,
Arabic, or other languages.

The Director of Global Affairs
Unit at ARI, Sakil Malik, said that
in order to promote literacy, it was
important to create a culture of
reading that would broaden reading
as well as analytical and critical
thinking.
“It takes time to create a culture
of reading. Maybe the younger generation
is reading to their children
but the older generation was not
reading to their children. To create
the culture of reading parents
should read to their children.
Interesting reading materials for
children should also be available.
Parents should encourage their
children in learning. Newspapers
should also have sections for children.
Public libraries are other
facilities that could promote the
culture of reading,” he said.
Dr Gary Moorman of the
Department of Language, Reading
and Exceptionalities at
Appalachian State University said,
“It is important for us as educators
to think of how to encourage children
to read. Teachers can teach
reading and writing but literacy has
to come from the community.
Children also know more than us
from smartphones and Internet
that we don’t know. We need also
to build on those skills. Teachers,
parents and the community need to
collaborate in order to build the literacy
culture.”

at TESOL meet

QATAR TESOL, an organisation
that focuses on
teachers who teach English
to non-native English
speakers, recently held its
eighth international conference
at the College of
North Atlantic, in Doha.
The conference with
Learner Motivation,
Involvement, and
Autonomy’, as its main
theme featured a demo
debate titled ‘Visas are necessary
for our country’s
safety’, organised by
QatarDebate, an initiative
of Qatar Foundation.
There were also concurrent
sessions during which
participants chose short
topics to debate. The sessions
were designed to help
teachers and other educators
hone their debating
skills in classrooms either
through formal debates or
by using argumentation
and rebuttal to teach academic
subjects.

of Arabic Programmes,
Kelley Bieringer, head of
English Programmes,
Anna Kerr and Tasniem
Hussain, English Debate
Coaches at QatarDebate
Centre, participated in the
two-day conference.
Kelly Bieringer said that
QatarDebate was proud to
be a part of such an important
academic conference.
“QatarDebate places a
high value on language
skills, so the collaboration
of our organisation is a
perfect fit. Teachers
learned how to bring
debating skills into their
classrooms to help students
become more confident
speakers. Debate
also keeps students interested
in learning.
Hopefully, there will be
more debate- based programmes
in classes around
the region, ”she said.
She said that the conference
organisers were to
hold an event like this
because they see it as a
method to involve the
audience and allow them
to experience a fun and
educational activity that
can be replicated in the
classroom.
“People retain knowledge
by doing something as
opposed to just seeing or
hearing it. Active learning
is what happens when participating
in this type of
debates. Most participants
are used to sitting and listening
at conferences and
not participating directly.
This was an exception as all
the participants got the
opportunity to interact during
the debate,” she added.

topic ‘Debate in the
Classroom as an
Extracurricular Activity’
which focused on how
debate, as an extracurricular
activity outside of the
classroom, supports and
strengthens educational
goals within the classroom.
Around 450 teachers from
various subjects attended
the event.

IIA free medical camp on April 20

INDIAN Islamic Association
(IIA) will be organising its
annual free medical camp at
Tariq Bin Ziyad Independent
School for Boys on April 20.
The one-day annual event,
currently in its 11th year, is
being organised in partnership
with the Indian Medical
Association (IMA), Supreme
Council of Health (SCH) and
Hamad Medical Corporation
(HMC) with Qtel as the
event’s main sponsor.
Over 5,000 low-income
expatriates from India,
Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh
and Sri Lanka are expected
to benefit from the event.
Addressing a press conference
on Monday, President
of IIA Abdurahman Ahmad
KT said that a total of 1300
participants have already
registered for free medical
check-ups at the camp.
“In addition, over 100 doctors
and 150 paramedical staffs
from the Indian Medical
Association, Hamad Medical
Corporation and Qatar
Petroleum’s Medical Services
Department will take part in
the programme,” he said.

said that this year’s programme
would also feature, for
the first time, a back-pain clinic
aimed at taking care of all
back-pain related complaints
of the participants.
“Back pain has been identified
as one of the common
health problem noticeable
among the low-income earners,
due to the nature of their
work, hence the necessity to set
up a clinic to attend to such
issues ” he said.
According to him, health
problems such as ‘cancer
screening’, ‘life style diseases’,
‘organ donation’ and
‘approaches to a healthy heart’,
‘teenage girls – gynaecological
problems’ will be dealt with by
medical experts at the event.
He said that health cards
and medicines will also be distributed
freely to needy
patients while a health exhibition
will be organised on the
sidelines of the camp
Qatar Red Crescent Society,

Qatar Traffic Department and

will also be participating in the
event alongside a number of
private clinics in the country.
The programme will start

Shell raises awareness
at QP environment fair

QATAR Shell reached out to
hundreds of families and children
at the Qatar Petroleum
Environment Fair to enhance
their awareness of energy
supply and demand, environmental
consequences and
means of economising energy
consumption.
While presenting a variety
of Shell initiatives to preserve
the environment, the company’s
booth also featured an
interactive game helping children
to clearly understand
their energy consumption
and the choices they can
make to protect the environment
by eliminating energy
waste.
The QP Environment Fair
was opened on Saturday by
Minister of Energy and
Industry HE Dr Mohammed
bin Saleh al Sada to drive a
strong message that
“Environment is Everyone’s
Responsibility” and to ensure
that the public is informed
about the several environmental
initiatives in the oil
and gas sector.

journey’: an experiential
demonstration explained the
properties of fuels derived
from the gas-to-liquids
process and their impact on

emit less fumes compared to
their conventional counterparts

the team planning the World
Environment Day (WED) celebrations,
to teach children
about the importance of caring

way, by painting a rainforest
inspired mural in its stand and
doing other artistic activities.
The WED is a worldwide
campaign of the United
Nations Environment
Programme (UNEP) to celebrate
concrete, socially
responsible activity in promoting
greater awareness about
the environment and sustainable
development. The year,
the focus of the day was on
everyone’s responsibility
towards a greener economy to
guarantee a more sustainable
and greener future for the generations
to come.
Children and adults who visited
the Oryx GTL stand had
the opportunity to learn new
ways to protect the environment
starting from home,
have fun with different artistic
activities, as well as know
more about the several initiatives
organised by IAID and
the Friends of the
Environment Centre (FEC) to
celebrate the WED in Qatar
with the support of Oryx GTL
as platinum sponsor.

Classical dance students thrill audience with performance

BUDDING students of
Indian classical dances held
the audience spell bound with
their captivating and outstanding
performance at Gulf
Cinema recently.
In an enthralling and spectacular
display entitled
‘Noopuradhwani 2012’, the
young disciples of renowned
dance guru Kalamandalam
Seema, captured the hearts of
the audience.
The three-hour long dance
spectacle highlighted the
mastery of the dancers over
ancient South Indian classical
dances, Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam
and Kuchipudi.
The programme began with
‘Enthoro Mahanu Bhavulu’ a
dedicatory piece to the great
masters and performers,
composed by the renowned,
19th Century composer,
Saint Thyagaraja.
This was followed by
‘Cholkettu’, a primary item in
the ‘Mohiniyattam’ series
which was marked by sensuous,
graceful body movements.
The dancers also
showed their emotive abilities
conveying the pangs of separation
and the underlying sorrows
in some of the
‘Mohiniyttam’ acts that followed.
‘Bharatanatyam’ performances,
yet another an integral
part of the show, were
marked by graceful body
movements and elaborate
footwork.
‘Kuchipudi’ dancers followed,
displaying fast, rhythmic
footwork and a myriad of
emotions through subtle
expressions.

the narratives of each dance

Greek virtuoso to perform at Katara on April 20-21

Village, will bring a Greek
virtuoso, Dionysis
Grammenos and the
London- based Greek band,
Plastikes Karekles (Plastic
Chairs) to perform on April
20 and 21.
While well-known clarinetist
Grammenos will perform
on the first Greek day
at the Drama Theatre,
Plastikes Karekles will perform
the following day at
the same venue.
This is the first time the
two will be performing in
Qatar, according to a press
release issued by Katara.
Hailed as one of the most
talented clarinetists in the
world, Grammenos, will
perform alongside Doha
String Quartet and Sonja
Park. Grammenos’ international
career began in 2008
when he became the first
wind player to win the
Eurovision Young
Musicians International
Competition. He has since
collaborated with several
orchestras including the
Vienna Chamber Orchestra
and Qatar Philharmonic
Orchestra and worked with
prominent conductors such
as Vladimir Ashkenazy,
Christian Lindberg, Ari

(QMA) student Nadir Abdul
Salam recently won the ‘Talent
of the Year’ award instituted
by Bihar Foundation as part of
the 100th year celebration of
the Indian province of Bihar in
Qatar.
Indonesian Ambassador to
Qatar HE Dedi Seif Al Hadi
conferred the award in the
presence of a number of dignitaries
and officials at Al Ghazal
Club, in Doha.
“The award was conferred
in recognition of his unique
talent in singing Arabic songs
with meticulous perfection,”
said the Founder-President of
IABJ Shakil Ahmad Kakvi at
the event.
Nadir is known for his talent
in rending various dialects of
Arabic such as Khaleeji,
Labenese and Egyptian besides
rendering songs in other languages.
The jury of the award
noted that his talent could be
used as a bridge to boost the
cultural relations between the
Arab world and India.
Last year Nadir had won the
‘Unique Talent Award’ as part
of United Nations World
Environment Day.
