Gerwig says. “It
always sounds
so darn pretentious.’’
Gerwig is on the telephone
from her New York
apartment to talk about
her new film, Frances
Ha, which will open in
limited release on May
17. The only trouble is,
she can’t figure out
how to talk about her
craft.
“I think acting is
about making sense
of a moment,’’ the
29-year-old finally
says. “But that’s not
always easy when
you’re stuck in a human
body.’’
At 5-foot-9 and with a
healthy build, Gerwig isn’t
one of Hollywood’s waifish
blondes, and she admit that
that’s part of the problem.
“It can take a few weeks not to be
embarrassed in your body when you’re
shooting a movie,’’ she says. “There
is something embarrassing about just
being you. You feel so big standing
there. But I always lose my self-consciousness
in the takes. I find my spontaneity
again.’’
Gerwig plays the title character in
Frances Ha, and also co-wrote the film
with Noah Baumbach, the writer/director
of The Squid and the Whale (2005)
and Greenberg (2010) and also her boyfriend
since 2011. The film is about an
aspiring modern dancer (Gerwig) whose
life starts to fall apart after she decides to
separate herself from her closest friend,
Sophie, played by Mickey Sumner,
daughter of Sting and Trudie Styler.
Like most of Baumbach’s films, Francis
Ha is driven more by character than
by plot, and the characters defy the usual
easy stereotypes of Hollywood movies.
“Frances always lived inside of me,’’
Gerwig says. “She just needed a movie.’’
The film reunites Baumbach and
Gerwig, who previously worked together
on Greenberg. They wrote the screenplay
specifically for her to play and him
to direct.
“Greta and I wanted to work together
again after Greenberg,’’ Baumbach says
in a separate interview. “I started writing
stuff about this character, Frances, and
this world, and then we wrote together.
It became this movie.’’
One unusual aspect of the movie is
that it’s shot in black and white.
“It’s near impossible to shoot in
black-and-white film,’’ Gerwig says.
“Labs won’t do it anymore, so it was shot
in colour and then swapped out. It was
always intended to be a black-and-white
film to capture that moodiness.’’
The film is also unusual for centering
not on a romantic relationship but rather
on a deep, platonic love between two
women.
“We did talk about structuring it
like a typical love story,’’ Gerwig says,
“but it’s not a man and a woman in love.
Frances has this girl in her life. So she
has the girl, she loses the girl and she
tries to get the girl back. The only difference
is that the girl is her friend and not
her love interest.
“We’ve seen the same structure so
many times with male-female relationships,’’
she continues. “We even have a
part in this film where she tries to find a
replacement girl, which again is typical
of other love stories. The love that comes
from female friendships is unexplored
as a movie subject, but the emotions are
the same.
“Women love deeply even when it
comes to friends,’’ Gerwig says. “That’s
why we need to watch this movie.’’
Depicting that kind of deep, passionate
friendship onscreen wasn’t hard, she
adds.
“Frances is such a passionate young
woman,’’ Gerwig says. “She loves her
friend. She hangs onto this idea that

maybe they’ll find a way to spend their
lives together and not move on from
this moment in their late youth. Frances
doesn’t have it in her to tell her friend to
take a hike. She keeps chasing her until
she can’t chase her anymore.
“She must allow them to be adult
friends,’’ the actress says. “But it’s hard,
because it feels like they’re breaking up.’’
From an acting perspective, Gerwig
says, the situation involved the same
emotions that would arise during a romantic
breakup.
“It’s that heavy feeling on your
chest,’’ she says with a sigh. “You really
can’t describe that feeling of losing
love or letting love go. But, at the same
time, we all know that heaviness. It’s like
someone is sitting on your chest and you
can’t breathe.’’
Making her second film with Baumbach
was a pleasure on every level,
Gerwig reports.
“His direction is amazing,’’ she says.
“He doesn’t shoot a film, he creates a
world. And, at the same time, he makes
the moviegoer feel like all of this just
happened in some spontaneous way. He
makes it look so easy and natural.’’
Screenwriting was a logical next step
for Gerwig, who grew up in Sacramento,
California, where she spent her childhood
acting and performing in the local
ballet. At Barnard College in New York,
she studied acting and began writing her
own plays.
“I was encouraged to explore my
creativity,’’ she recalls. “In high school
I started to write creatively. Prior to
that I thought other people wrote plays.
When I got to college, I did a few essays
and was asked, ‘Maybe you’d like to
write a short story or a play?’ It seemed
incredible to me, because I could write
the words I’d like to say in a play or
onscreen.
“I was also around people in college
who talked about writing and acting as a
profession you could enter, get better at
and work on,’’ Gerwig adds. ‘’I’m someone
who likes to work on things.’’
She got her big break in Greenberg,
in which she starred opposite Ben Stiller.
Subsequently she stole scenes from
Natalie Portman in No Strings Attached
(2011) and then played the love interest
of the title character (Russell Brand) in
Arthur (2011), going on to star in Lola
Versus (2012) and Woody Allen’s To
Rome with Love (2012).
Even now, though, Gerwig still has a
hard time talking about what she does,
though actually she’s quite eloquent
about it – even if the subject leaves her
flustered.
“Talking about acting is like talking
about writing or dancing,’’ she says. “It
just feels odd.’’
She will say, however, that it helped
her get a handle on Frances that the
character was a dancer.
“We didn’t shoot this movie close to
my face,’’ Gerwig says. “I was so grateful,
because I wanted the space to play in the
frame. I love older movies where you can
see an actor walk across a room. In this
movie I was given the space and the opportunity
to create a whole person.
“I love seeing someone who is whole
move through the world, because that’s
what all of us do every single day.’’

Brown’s scary

Mike Tyson, with pigeon sidekick,
to star as TV cartoon detective

FORMER world heavyweight boxing
champion Mike Tyson will star as a
cartoon detective, with a pigeon as
a sidekick, in a new animated series, US
cable network Adult Swim said.
Tyson, who recently toured his oneman
autobiographical stage show, Mike
Tyson: Undisputed Truth, will give voice
to his cartoon character on the Mike
Tyson Mysteries crime-solving series.
Tyson, 46, will be aided by a
magical tattoo on his character’s face
and a foul-mouthed pigeon as a partner

said. Tyson in real life owns racing
pigeons.
The network, which is known for its
zany youth-oriented programmes, did
not say when the show would premiere.

Dulhania Le Jayenge
(DDLJ) as their most favourite
feature film from the past
100 years of Indian cinema
in a poll conducted by Sanona, the
UK’s largest online Pay Per View (PPV)
Indian movie streaming service.
The hit romantic comedy, which
starred superstars Shah Rukh Khan and
Kajol in the lead roles, won 47 percent
of the votes in the online poll conducted
across social networking sites like
Facebook and Twitter, email and via
the movie portal itself to coincide with
the 100th anniversary of the Indian film
industry.
Written and directed by Aditya
Chopra, son of the legendary Bollywood
filmmaker Yash Chopra, Dilwale
Dulhania Le Jayenge beat a selection
of ten all-time greats which included
classics such as Raj Kapoor’s Awaara
(1951), Mehboob Khan’s Mother India
(1957) and Ramesh Sippy’s Sholay
(1975).
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge was
among the first Indian films to be
produced with the large and rich South

The film introduced the Non-Resident

Sanona’s CMO, Shazia Nizam, is
not surprised that an evergreen musical
such as DDLJ won the poll by a
wide majority. “With Shah Rukh Khan
and Kajol’s continuing popularity and
Bollywood’s expanding fan base in the
UK, Europe and further afield, it comes
as no surprise that Dilwale Dulhania
Le Jayenge would be voted the public’s
most favourite film,” she said.

ACTRESS Sonam Kapoor feels lucky
that maestro A R Rahman has
composed music for two of her
films - Delhi 6 and Raanjhana.
It was in Rakesh Omprakash Mehra’s
directorial venture Delhi 6 that Rahman
churned out a song Masakali which was
featured on Sonam. The song became
so famous that people started calling
Sonam as the Masakali girl.
“He adds life to everything. He is a
genius and a very modest person. I feel
privileged and blessed that he has given
music to two of my films,” Sonam told
reporters at the promotional event of
Raanjhanna.
Her on screen Ranjhanna, south
actor Dhanush, too couldn’t stop talking
about Rahman. “How can one forget the
pigeon song of Sonam (Masakali)? He
gives melodious music which people can
never forget,” he said.
Sonam is quite happy to share screen
space with Dhanush in the film which
marks his debut in Bollywood.
“For me Dhanush is the Raanjhanna.
No one can be like him. He is innocent
and sweet,” she said.
Even Sonam’s actor father Anil
Kapoor was all praise for Dhanush, after
looking at the promo of Raanjhanna,
she said.
“My dad was just talking about Dhanush,
how good he is in the film, how
he has acted. Sonam went on to say that
in real life too, she would love to have
someone like Dhanush in her life.
“I think I will have to go to Tamil
Nadu to find a guy for me,” she chuckled.
Anytime I fall in love I feel it’s a first
time. I have had no successful love story
yet. I hope I will succeed next time when
I fall in love,” she said.

an actress: Richa Chadda

performance as Nagma Khatun
in Gangs of Wasseypur, Richa
Chadda is keen to cement her career by
experimenting with challenging roles in
Bollywood.
Chadda, who earned praise in Anurag
Kashyap’s two-part crime saga, will next
be seen playing a gangster in two of her
upcoming movies --Fukrey and Tamanchey.
Richa’s aim is to follow the success
of GOW by taking on challenging roles
rather than going the glamorous way.
“Over the next ten years, my aim is to
do roles that other people will turn down
or be afraid of experimenting. I like doing
different characters and people will
get bored of me if I am doing only one
kind of character and I will get bored
too,” Richa said in an interview.
Starting her career with a supporting
role in Dibakar Banerjee’s Oye Lucky
Lucky Oye, Richa surprised everyone
with her range in Anurag Kashyap’s film.
Though she was offered a lot of
similar roles post the success of the film,
Richa believes GOW helped her establish

share of flops in Tezz, Miley na

lucky to have worked

projects. My journey

nautch girl in her next film Rajjo, to
be directed by newcomer Vishwas
Patil.
The film will trace the journey
of a nautch girl who goes on to become
a classical dancer. “There
was a lot of research that went
into my role for Rajjo,” she
said.
Next, she would be seen
in Vikas Bahl’s Queen. The
film will see Kangana playing
the role of a small town girl
whose boyfriend ditches her
right before their marriage.
“It’s an exciting role
about a girl who sets out
on her honeymoon by
herself. It’s different from
what I have done before,”
she said.

or chanderi silks in soothing shades like

While deciding on fabrics for sultry
and sweaty weather conditions, designers
focus on fabrics that breathe; nets,
chiffons and chanderi silks fall in this
category. Embellishments and embroidery
too have got makeovers with
sharper focus on intricate threadwork,
beadwork, lace and patchwork.
Designers say such outfits are not
only easy to carry off, but brides
also look gorgeous in them.
“Modern day brides refuse to
wear heavy embroidered outfits,
decorated with gold, silver,
crystals and precious stones. Instead,
they go for soft and light
fabrics like chiffons and satins
with laces or vibrant beading
and patchwork,” Delhi-based
designer Ritu Beri told IANS.
Beri, known for her exquisite
designs and elegant
cuts, says that “light-weight
silhouettes are easy to wear
and carry off. They also provide
relief from the scorching
heat. One should go
for transparent fabrics and
nets,” she added.

the buzz word any more for

Outlining the shifting
preferences in bridal wear,
designer Ritu Kumar told
IANS: “Women are moving

“The present trend is to
go for brocades for the lehengas
but in bright colours
so that the ensemble is both
rich and not too weighed
down.
Light weight chanderi
fabric makes up for embroidery,
which is mostly subtle
threadwork and light tikki
work,” added Ritu Kumar
who is using crapes, nets and
fine flowy fabrics for her latest collection.
“These fabrics work well for summer;
especially the see through look is important,”
she said.
Although wedding outfits mostly
depend upon a girl’s choice, Tarun Tahiliani,
who has mastered the art of churning
out high-end bridal wear, admits the
shift in taste is evident.
“Indian bridal wear has always been
heavy, but summer wedding wear does
see a tilt towards lighter fabrics and
colours which are cheerful and summery
- suited to the weather,” he said.
For light-weight bridal wear, he felt
that “georgettes, sheer silks and organza
are preferred to heavier silks and brocades.”
The changing outlook of women
has certainly brought a change in their
tastes and preferences. Modern young
girls do not any more confine themselves
to traditional lehengas or saris or salwar-kameez
to take their vows on their
D-day. Pointing out the change, Ritu
Beri said: “They opt for elegant peplum

While creating lightweight outfits, designers
have to ensure the weave is right
as weaving techniques play an important
role in bridal outfits.
Ritu Kumar said she works mostly
with Benaras woven mangalgiris, chanderis
and gossamer jaamdaanis. “We have
our own weavers who create the fabrics
and do the embroidery,” she added.
Beri uses jacquard weaving while
working with brocades, whereas Tahiliani
mostly opts for hand-woven brocades
and kinkhabs.
What about the trendy shades for
bridal wear?
“Explore colours other than red and
maroon. Many are opting for jewel tones
like fuchsia, orange, emerald green, pastel
shades like aqua blue, lilac and metallic
tones and undertone in the bridal
outfits. Silver and other ice cool shades
are also replacing traditional earthy
tones and hues,” said Beri.
Agreeing with Beri, Tahiliani said:
“Pastels for morning weddings, burnt
orange and burgundies for evenings are
perfect.” Ritu Kumar felt the look and
colour should be a fusion of bright and
soft. “The hues are corals, turquoises,
lime greens and rani pinks. They are
fresh and bright, not the dull looks associated
with western looking pastels.”

Exercise to fight
osteoporosis
Physical exercise based on
low-intensity strength exercises,
carried out three days per week
in one-hour sessions over a
6-month period, leads to
significant improvements in
muscular strength in the upper
and lower limbs

PHYSICAL exercise programme
that is based on a very basic, rudimentary
materials can significantly
improve upper and lower limb strength
as well as static and dynamic balance in
women suffering from post menopausal
osteoporosis.
Montserrat Otero, a PhD holder in
Physical Activity and Sports Sciences of
the UPV/EHU-University of the Basque
Country studied 68 women with post
menopausal osteoporosis of the age group
50 - 72, of whom 34 were randomly assigned
to the Exercise Group and 34 to the
Control Group.
The participants in the Exercise Group
followed a supervised programme of physical
exercise involving strength and balance
training, which lasted six months
in which there were 72 sessions each
lasting 60 minutes, in which between
5 and 8 balance exercises and between
8 and 12 strength exercises were done
per session.
The Control Group did not take part
in the programme of physical exercise,
although they did do the strength and balance
tests beforehand and afterwards.
At the start of the programme there
were no significant differences in the two
groups in any of the variables.
However, following the intervention,
the strength of the upper and lower limbs
of the groups was markedly different.
Otero said that those in the Exercise
Group improved their performance in
muscular strength of the upper and lower
limbs, while those in the Control Group
worsened in both variables.
With respect to the balance variable,
the Exercise Group had a significant improvement
after the intervention.
Otero concluded that a programme of
physical exercise based on low-intensity
strength exercises and exercises involving
static and dynamic balance, carried out
three days per week in one-hour sessions
over a 6-month period, leads to significant
improvements in muscular strength in
the upper and lower limbs and in static
and dynamic balance in women with post
menopausal osteoporosis.
Otero added that is why if there is
no access to sophisticated equipment
due to the economic cost involved,
even without it, the risk factors of the
main consequence of the disease can
be reduced.

Moon rocks offer new
view of lunar dynamo

THE Moon clung to its magnetic
field until at least 3.56
billion years ago, a study
suggests – about 160 million
years longer than scientists
had thought.
That small change may be enough to
rule out some ideas about how the Moon
generated and held onto its ancient
magnetism, through a process known as
a dynamo.
“It seems like the lunar dynamo
lasted very late in the Moon’s history,”
says Benjamin Weiss, a palaeomagnetics
expert at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) in Cambridge. “That’s
a very surprising result.”
Weiss and his colleagues, led by MIT
planetary scientist ClÃ|ment Suavet,
report the findings in the Proceedings of
the National Academy of Sciences.
Although the Moon has no global
magnetic field today, rocks collected during
the Apollo missions show that it once
did. Molten rock churning in a planet’s
interior can generate a dynamo, and
researchers have suggested several possible
triggers for this stirring. An extraterrestrial
impact – from chunks of rock
left over from the Solar System’s formation,
for example – could have smashed
the Moon hard enough to jolt liquid in
its interior. Or heat differences caused by
radioactive decay could have prompted
liquid to shift in great convective movements,
like a pot of water boiling on the
stove.
To know which option is correct,
scientists must first determine how long
the dynamo lasted and how strong it was
at various points in history. Suavet and
his team tackled these questions by reanalysing
two 3.56-billion-year-old rocks
collected by the Apollo 11 astronauts in
1969.
Using several techniques, the scientists
found that the rocks had magnetic
fields of 13â (euro) ‘’70 microtesla. The
higher end of that range is comparable to
Earth’s magnetic field today.
The fact that the Moon still had a
magnetic field 3.56 billion years ago
should rule out impact as the origin of
the Moon’s dynamo at that time, says
Suavet. The dates do not line up: lunar
impacts large enough to stir up a core
dynamo dropped off around 3.72 billion
years ago, and any dynamo created this
way would have also soon faded.

A better option, Weiss says, may be
a theory proposed in Nature in 2011 by
Christina Dwyer, a planetary scientist at
the University of California, Santa Cruz,
and her colleagues. It holds that Earth’s
gravitational tug may have caused the
Moon’s solid mantle and liquid core to
separate and move in such a way as to
keep stirring the fluid. “I’ve been hoping
to see measurements like this,” Dwyer
says of the latest study. “It really does
help differentiate among different models
for how the dynamo occurred.”
Those who support an impact-driven
dynamo aren’t giving up so easily.
Michael Le Bars, a fluid dynamicist at
the Non-Equilibrium Phenomena Research
Institute in Marseille, France,
published an impact explanation for the
lunar dynamo in the same issue of Nature
in which Dwyer’s paper appeared.
He says that extraterrestrial impacts
could have kicked off a dynamo earlier in
the Moon’s history.“We are convinced,
from fluid-mechanics arguments, that
impacts indeed produced a magnetic
field at some point,” Le Bars says.
Indeed, the Moon could have had
different dynamos generated through
different mechanisms at different times,
Suavet and Weiss say. They are now
looking at other, even younger, Moon
rocks to try to pin down whether the
dynamo lasted beyond 3.56 billion years
ago.
