QATAR sees a big opportunity in a likely
clamour for gas to liquid (GTL) products
with the implementation of
stricter emission and noise regulations
in dense urban areas around the world.
“As we enter the ‘Golden Age of Gas’
with vast resources and enhanced
methods of production, we believe that
GTL is poised to grow further as a gas
monetisation option ,” said Deputy
Chairman of the Qatar Petroleum
Board of Directors and Managing
Director of RasGas Company Limited,
Hamad Rashid al Mohannadi.
In a key note speech made on behalf
of the Minister for Energy and Industry
HE Mohammad bin Saleh al Sada at
the inaugural edition of World GTL
Congress, Mohannadi called upon the
world GTL stakeholders for greater
exchange of ideas in framing new
opportunities to set GTL on its growth.
“Despite a promising future, many
challenges still lie ahead. The challenge
international oil companies and other
gas producing countries now face is
how to further develop and commercialise
the GTL technology, especially
given the current favourable circumstances,”
Mohannadi said.
On the opportunities for GTL products,
Mohannadi said the requirement
for superior performing lubricants,
and a growing appetite for high-quality
refined products for specialised industrial
and civil applications will create a
Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jabor al Thani with Iranian Vice-President
for International Affairs Ali Saeedlou, in Doha, on Sunday.
Qatar set to meet global GTL demand
significant demand for GTL products.
Talking about Qatar’s achievement
in the GTL field, Mohannadi said Qatar
has come a long way since the inception
of its early plans to develop a GTL
hub. He said the two GTL plants,
namely Pearl GTL and Oryx GTL, have
an average combined production of
more than 170, 000 barrels per day.
According to Mohannadi the Pearl
GTL plant has produced more than 3
million metric tonnes of GTL products
and sold more than 100 shipments to
the world.
Managing Director and Chairman,
Qatar Shell Wael Sawan said Pearl
GTL had already produced 5.7 million
tonnes of NGL and GTL products
through the third quarter of 2012,
making a positive impact at the bottom
line, and was currently producing and
Taking a dig at the sceptics, Sawan
said, “The technology does work! And
yes, GTL is a very attractive gas monetisation
option, especially in a world
in which we find an abundance of conventional
and unconventional gas
resources.
Others who addressed the Congress
included the Oryx GTL Chief Executive
Officer Abdul Rahman al Suwaidi,
Tasweeq Chief Executive Officer Saad
al Kuwari and Chief Executive Officer
of Qatar Airways Akbar al Baker.
In his address, Baker outlined the
carrier’s ambitious GTL aviation fuel
programme saying that it had helped
boost Qatar’s profile as a leader in the
use of this technology.
“As home to the world’s largest gasto-liquids
plant, Qatar Airways is supporting
our country’s ventures in
unique and ground-breaking fuel
research and production,” Baker pointed
out.
He said now more than ever, airlines
across the global aviation industry
were actively exploring new environmentally
friendly fuels to achieve
greater cost and operational efficiency.
“Our mission to explore opportunities
to utilise natural gas as a source for
a new and environmentally friendly
aviation fuel will spawn a better future
for the aviation sector. QA began this
journey five years ago with the aim of
ensuring not only energy security and
sustainable growth for our airline, but
for the industry at large,” Baker said.
“Since then we have travelled far,
moving from a concept on paper to the
commercial supply of GTL fuel at the
New Doha International Airport which
will open later this year, providing all
the aircraft that land here with the
facility to refuel with GTL jet fuel.”
Tasweeq CEO said Qatar was wellplaced
to meet the growing global
demand for GTL as exports of Pearl
GTL naphtha were expected to
increase to over one million tonnes per
annum while Oryx GTL naphtha
exports would be stable at around
300,000 tonnes.
He said Tasweeq would also market
GTL blended jet fuel, which will be used
mainly in the aviation industry, and
could provide value in the distillates
pool as zero-sulphur-blend stock.
THE livestock and wholesales
(central) markets in
Abu Hamour area would
be relocated to the Al
Aweena region in the near
future, said Saleh bin
Jaber al Nabet, a member
of the Municipal Council
representing Abu Hamour
12th district.
Al Aweena is located
about 66 kilometres away
from Doha.
According to a report in Al
Watan daily, Nabet said the
move to relocate the markets
was aimed at addressing
sanitation and air pollution
problem faced by residents
of Al Qaraana area of the district.
“Bad odour and pollution
caused by the landfill at the
markets are very harmful to
the people and the environment
in general. Besides, the
presence of livestock, fruits
and vegetables and fish markets
should not be near people’s
homes because of the
inconvenience they create,”
he said.
He called for the development
of an industrial zone
where such market could be
located.
He pointed out that members
representing the district
at the Municipal
Council have demanded a
permanent solution to the
problem; hoping that
authorities concerned would
take practical steps to
address the issue.
The council member said
that small markets would be
opened in different part of
the country, one of which is a
central market in Abu Sedra
in Abu Hamour, to provide
all services to people of the
area.
Speaking about developmental
project in the district,
Nabet said works were on to
provide all necessary social
amenities for the residents of
the area.
He said government has
executed some sanitation
projects in both Abu
Hamour and Misaemeer
while major works would
Saleh bin Jaber al Nabet
be completed in Um
Alnasseem and Ain Khaled
neighbourhoods by the end
of the first quarter of 2015.
According to him, interlocking
on sidewalks and
street lights would be
installed in the areas
where permanent roads
are completed.
“We want to ensure that
major works on the roads
are complete before the
installation of street lights.
Street lights and sidewalks
are not as important as
roads. They are only complementary
utilities.
Infrastructure works must
be finished first before we
can talk of others services,”
he said.
Talking about health
and education services in
the area, Nabet described
Abu Hamour as home for
about 80 percent of both
private and public schools
in the district.
“I can say Abu Hamour is
the most develop area in the
district. It boasts of many
health centres, ‘Furjan’ playgrounds
and parks for families
as well as many commercial
centres and four big
malls,” Nabet said.
According to him, the only
area that needs malls and
commercial activities in the
district is Al Miirad because
‘it is just developing’.
He said a parcel of land
has been allocated to build a
commercial complex that
will provide all services for
the residents of the area. He
said that construction works
would begin on the site soon.
Meanwhile, Nabet
revealed that government
would soon embark on new
projects on Abu Samra international
highway, Dukhan
road.
Waterlogging, wastes pose health hazard to Mesaieed residents
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
DOHA
MESAIEED, an industrial and
tourist hub, has turned into a
veritable hell with several areas
of the township inundated with
water and stench emanating
from waste materials.
The offensive odour has
been making breathing difficult
for the residents, thus
posing health hazard to
them.
The entry point to the
township, which is strewn
with seasonal and colourful
flowers, is just deceptive.
Once inside, just before the
Sealine Road and at the end
of Mesaieed, one comes
across a flooded soccer field
and vacant pieces of land
here and there that have
turned into pools of water in
the absence of a proper
drainage system.
According to the residents
of the area, even a brief spell
of small rains causes waterlogging.
Besides, the waste
materials, which include
plastic bags, ropes and various
other items, pose a serious
threat to the health of
the residents.
A resident of Mesaieed
said, “Negligence is behind
the poor condition of the
township. It does not take
long for a piece of land to get
flooded here because of the
absence of an outlet or necessary
infrastructure. Even a
brief spell of rain can cause
waterlogging.”
He added, “There has not
been any step at the ministerial
level to prevent waterloggings
in future. Waterloggings
not only cause a
bad smell but also breed
harmful insects. Besides, it
puts off foreign visitors who
go there to enjoy their weekends.”
Another resident
remarked, “Mesaieed, which
boasts of some of the best
beaches of Qatar, is becoming
unimaginable. There are
pools of stagnant water full
of stinking garbage. Despite
being a major industrial
township with a touris spot
like the Sealine, the township
wears a poor look compared
to other townships
because of official neglect.”
When asked about it, the
Chairman of the Municipal
Council Saud bin Abdullah
al Hanzab blamed the
Ministry of Municipal
Affairs and Urban Planning
and the Public Works
Authority (Ashghal) for the
sorry state of affairs at
Mesaieed.
Al Hanzab said, “Absence
of a proper infrastructure
leads to frequent water-logging
and the resultant
breeding flies and pose a
serious threat to the health
of the residents. The
Ministry of Municipality and
Urban Planning and
Ashghal must coordinate to
expedite the setting up of the
necessary infrastructure.”
He added, “Mere spraying
of insecticides is not enough.
We have been demanding
speedy completion of infrastructure
projects but to no
avail. Our country is a small
one, and an infrastructure
project should not take so
much time for completion.”
THE Fourth International
Conference
on
Argumentation, Rhetoric,
Debate and the Pedagogy of
Empowerment adopted the
Doha Declaration which
advocates spreading debate
culture internationally.
The declaration was presented
by Dr Abdellatif
Sellami, educational programme
manager of
QatarDebate Center, during
the closing ceremony on
Sunday.
Major recommendations
include building up an international
network to debate
and dialogue, making debate
part of the school and college
curriculum and partnering
social organisations to prepare
the youth in the culture
of dialogue.
The declaration also aims
to promote dialogue for sorting
out issues nationally,
Dr Abdellatif Sellami,
QatarDebate Center educational
programme manager
regionally and internationally
and promote studies and
researches in debate.
Addressing the delegates,
Dr Sellami said that the conference
was a huge success
in terms of the issues discussed
and the challenges to
be met in solving problems
in promoting debate and
dialogue.
“The conference recommends
to invest in human
capital in a big way practically
and theoretically to promote
debate and dialogue. It
also suggests increasing the
culture of dialogue to build
bridges between various cultures
and nations,” he said.
He further pointed out
that debate must be adopted
as part of the school curriculum
so that children can
learn and practice the culture
of dialogue from early
ages.
Earlier, during a press
conference, Executive
Director of QatarDebate
Center Dr Hayat Maraffi
announced that the centre
would host an Arabic university
championship in April.
She said: “We are organising
a debate tournament for
university students like last
year. We expect a bigger participation
this time. We have
an agreement with Kuwait
University for cooperation in
the field of debate training.
The details will be worked
out soon.”
She also said that
QatarDebate would represent
the country in the
Worlds Schools Debate
Championship that will be
held in Antalya, Turkey,
from January 27 to February
5. “The preparations are in
full swing and the team has
been undergoing vigorous
training,” she added.
The conference discussed
a number of topics on debate
and argumentation on the
concluding day. Dr Maja
Nenadovic from the
University of Amsterdam
gave the keynote address on
‘Applied Debate: A Weapon
of Fighting Discrimination
and Building Understanding’.
The conference was
attended by a large number
of delegates from several
countries with a significant
number from the Arab
world.
Al Khor Fly-In to start on January 18
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
DOHA
THE Al Khor Fly-In
Organising Committee has
announced the schedule for
the annual crowd-pulling
attraction, which will take
place at the Al Khor Airport
on January 18 - 19.
The 6th Al Khor Fly-In will
begin at 9 am on both days,
running until approximately
4.30pm. Aircraft owners from
Qatar, the GCC and overseas
will be flying into the airport
on Thursday to prepare their
machines for the event.
The goal of the Fly-In is to
raise awareness about aviation
in a fun and educational way
that is attractive and accessible
to all. It’s an opportunity for
those with a love of aviation to
immerse themselves in an
experience by taking a closer
look at a diverse range of aircraft
from jets, to propeller aircraft,
to microlights and many
others.
For those unfamiliar with
aviation, the learning curve
will be steeper and, it is
hoped, even more enjoyable.
Spectators view various types and models of aeroplanes at the Al Khor Fly-In in 2012.
The event will begin with a
display of all the participating
aircraft ‘parked up’ for visitors
to photograph and have
any questions answered by
owners and experts. At the
same time, there will be a
demonstration of remotecontrol
aircraft flying.
This will be followed by the
‘real thing’ – as members of
the Qatar Flying Club will give
a demonstration of group flying.
Public tours of the exhibits
begin thereafter, and after a
break a second display of ‘formation’
remote-control flying
will take place.
Next will be the Fly-In
Organising Committee’s own
contribution to the event, followed
by a demonstration
from the Qatar Internal
Security Force. All the while,
those aircraft not in the air
will remain available for the
visitors’ perusal before the
first day winds up.
On Saturday, a group flight
of the light aircraft will be
held. There will be visitor
tours, as well as further
demonstrations of remotecontrol
aircraft followed by
the ‘Air Sports’ show from the
organising committee and the
Lakhwiya team show.
Numerous activities will be
organised by the Qatar Civil
Aviation Authority (QCAA)
and the Scientific Club in a
public tent set up specifically
for the event, where younger
visitors and families will
enjoy a series of competitions
and quizzes, with the chance
to win some superb prizes.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Hamad
al Thani, chairman of the Al
Khor Fly-In Organising
Committee, said: “The 2012
Fly-In was a huge success,
combining fun for all the family
with an educational experience.
We’re delighted to
announce the schedule for the
2013 Fly-In, with the quality
of the attractions this year
bigger and better than ever
before.
“As a result, we’re looking
forward to welcoming a
record number of visitors to
this year’s event and providing
a fun and family-friendly
aviation experience. We can
promise – quite literally –
high octane thrills and spills
for everyone and some truly
remarkable sights to be seen
for anyone with an interest in
aviation. These days, that’s
pretty much everyone.
“The Fly-In is about fun, it’s
about learning and it’s about
new experiences. We look forward
to welcoming you to the
event. You will not be disappointed,”
added Sheikh
Ahmed.
