Sale of sweets rises as many Arab
expats stay back in Doha for Eid
AISHA SIDAHMED
DOHA
SALE of Arabic sweets has gone up
on the eve of Eid al Fitr as many
Arab expatriates decided to stay
back in Qatar because of disturbances
in their home countries.
Saad Fateh, a salesman at Hot
Bread Automatic Bakeries, said he
had expected a decline in sale of
sweets because of special Eid
packages offered by travel agencies.
QT
Exclusive
“Initially, I was apprehensive
that our sale would drop during
this Eid. However, this year sale
has been very good so far. Sale is
way better than last year. It may
be because many Arab expatriates
are staying back in Qatar during
Eid. It is still early to say if the sale
will stay the same through Eid
days, though,” he said.
Many shoppers flocked to
A salesman at the Patisserie Suisse shop selling Arabic sweets, in Doha, on Sunday. (HANSON K JOSEPH)
sweets shops in Doha on Sunday
to make purchase as they started
preparing for Eid al Fitr holidays.
There has been a significant
increase in the sale of sweets during
the last couple of days.
Companies, hotels and residents
had already started placing orders
for Eid sweets as early as the 15th
day of Ramadan, said Adanan
Yaghi, the sales and marketing
manager of Patisserie Suisse, a
Lebanese sweets shop on Sunday.
He told Qatar Tribune that the
sale increased by 25 percent this
year. “All our 12 branches around
Doha have recorded 25 percent in
sale. We have to cater to a large
number of clients who have
booked their orders in advance for
Eid. We have been receiving the
orders since the middle of the
Holy Month of Ramadan. Among
our clients are five-star hotels,
communication companies,
banks and others, who want to
distribute sweets among their
employees and special customers,”
Adanan said.
He said there has been a high
demand for chocolate, Pettifor
and Arabic sweets, especially
Maamool sweets and Goraiba.
Celebrating Eid, especially Eid
al Fitr, with a variety of delicious
dessert is an ancient Arab tradition.
People usually prepare
home-maid sweets to share with
friends and neighbours to celebrate
the occasion. Lately, however,
most people prefer to buy
sweets from reputed shops to
avoid the stress of preparing
sweets at home.
“There are many shops that
make sweets to cater to the need
of the people during the festive
period. Many people prefer to buy
from reputed shops because they
prepare better sweets than homemaid
ones,” said Fatima Radi, a
restaurant owner, who supplies
home-maid sweets to some small
stores.
PROMOTING MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING
170 participants to attend 9th
Doha interfaith meet in Oct
QNA
DOHA
OVER 170 participants from the
Middle East, Europe and the US
will take part in the ninth edition
of Doha Interfaith conference from
October 24 to 26.
The conference is being hosted
by the Doha International Center
for Interfaith Dialogue (DICID).
It will be held under the theme
‘Means of Social Communication
and the Interfaith Dialogue: A
Futuristic Outlook’. It will discuss
the role of the social communication
media, including Facebook,
Twitter, Youtube and the Internet
in the promotion of dialogue
among religions.
Director of the Doha
International Center for Interfaith
Dialogue Dr Ibrahim Saleh al
Noaimi said that this year’s conference
would revolve around issues
like interfaith dialogue, civilisations
and cultures with a focus on
the role of social communication
media in influencing people’s
opinion.
He said the conference would
bring together religious scholars
and experts to discuss the impacts
of social communication channels
in the Arab world.
“The conference will provide
answers to some questions related
to communications revolution
such as: Is an open channel of
communication between two parties
enough to establish a constructive
dialogue and resolve disputes?
Why should there be civil wars and
killing of neighbour if there are
effective and informed channel of
communication, that is face-toface
communication?” he said.
“The Doha International Center
for Interfaith Dialogue is keen on
promoting the philosophy of
accepting one another and engaging
in dialogue as well as promoting
freedom, justice and equality.
We believe dialogue should be a
priority in dealing with conflicts of
Director of the Doha International Center for Interfaith Dialogue Dr Ibrahim
Saleh al Noaimi
civilisations, cultures and peoples,”
he added.
He said the current globalisation
approaches should nurture interaction
among people and free flow
of information and inter-relationship
among cultures.
Dr al Naimi said that the DICID
would work with the Islamic
World Academy of Science, which
would hold its 18th conference in
Doha on October 22 to mark its
25th anniversary. He said that the
Academy, an institution attended
by Muslim scholars from around
the world, specialises in supporting
activities and research and scientific
projects.
He said that the DICID and the
academy would hold a joint meeting
on October 24.
The meeting will be held under
the theme ‘Science and religion’.
Dr al Noaimi said that while the
ninth conference of interfaith dialogue
would involve representatives
of Islam, Christianity and
Judaism, the conference of the
Academy would be attended by
representatives only of Islam and
Christianity.
It is worth mentioning that the
Doha International Center for
Interfaith Dialogue was established
as a result of a recommendation
of the fifth Doha Interfaith
Conference in May 2007 in Doha.
The centre was officially opened in
May 2008.
The main role of the centre is to
spread the culture of dialogue,
peaceful coexistence and the
acceptance of others. The Doha
conference’s mission is to strive for
constructive dialogue among followers
of different faiths towards
better understanding and harnessing
distinct religious principles
and teachings to the benefit of all
humanity on the basis of mutual
respect and acknowledgement of
differences and through cooperation
with related individuals and
organisations.

Residents throng malls for Eid shopping
MOUSHUMI DAS CHAUDHURY
DOHA
THE festive season of Eid has
boosted business in all sectors,
be it in electronics, foodstuff,
textiles, footwear, perfumes
and gift items, among
others. There is a huge rush in
all the malls and hypermarkets
as residents gear up for
last minute shopping for family
and friends.
Talking to Qatar Tribune,a
mobile phone and accessories
salesman at Lulu
Hypermarket said: “People
are buying all brands. The
ongoing offers and new models
are attracting customers
who want to gift their family
and friends. The popular
brands are Nokia and
Samsung. There is a huge
range for customers to select
from.”
QT Exclusive
A large number of customers
could be seen in shops
in City Center, all Lulu outlets,
Quality hypermarket,
Dasman Centre, Landmark
mall and other outlets, especially
after iftar. on Sunday.
“I have started buying
today and I have to do a lot of
shopping for clothes, perfumes
and footwear for my
relatives and friends as we
exchange a lot of gifts during
Eid al Fitr. Earlier, I wanted
to get new clothes made but
the waiting time is long as
there is a heavy rush at tailoring
shops. I have now decided
to buy readymade clothes,”
said Sharmene Hussain, who
was shopping at City Center.
“Most of the outlets are
offering discounts and it is
better to buy readymade
clothes for everybody because
tailors are not so reliable in
Qatar,” Sharmene said.
Shop owners said they are
happy and busy as the mood
was quite upbeat. Even small
outlets at Villagio mall selling
artificial jewellery, sunglasses,
souvenirs and gift items
had huge turnout of customers
on Sunday.
A shopkeeper at Al Sadd
Street, dealing in textiles and
garments, said: “There is
heavy rush after iftar and
sales have been better than
last year as most of the locals
as well as expatriates are buying
in bulk. We mainly sell
clothes from Japan and
Indonesia and we have our
own tailors who are ready to
deliver within five days and
this has boosted our sale.”
“The demand for gold and
diamond jewellery and accessories
is high too. Special offer
of 50 percent discount on diamond
jewellery at Joy Allukas
and special gifts like LCD TV
at Atlas Jewellery have helped
the shops to attract many customers
although the price of
gold is very high.
“People are buying jewellery
because this festival
comes only once a year and
Shoppers at a hypermarket, in Doha, on Sunday. (JALAL PATHIYOOR)
shopping is part of the celebration,”
said Iftekar Ahmed
from India.
Retailers said the dates producers
and sellers make good
profits during Ramadan
because demand for dates
increases as people send
them as gifts to friends.
The sales manager of a grocery
store in Bin Mahmoud
area said, “In the local retail
market, sales are going up
too. Towards the Eid, the
market will be more brisk and
sales will increase. People are
not only buying for their own
consumption, but also to give
them as gifts to friends and
neighbours. “Most customers
prefer to buy special varieties
of dates. The price of special
dates with added nuts, decorations,
and nice packaging
complete with ribbon goes up
to QR95 per kg. The added
costs are due to the decoration
and the packaging that
went into making the product
special,” he added.
REACH Out To Asia (ROTA)
special needs and partnered
them.
The iftar was the latest initiative
in ROTA’s month-long
Ramadan campaign ‘ROTA
Reaches Out to Children’.
The initiatives are volunteerdriven
and fulfill the organisation’s
goals in a manner
that reflects its dedication to
An imam offers a sermon at the iftar organised by ROTA for children,
the values and ideals of the
Holy Month of Ramadan.
“Ramadan is more than a
celebration. It is a month of
self-reflection, sacrifice, charity,
and benevolence,” said
ROTA Director Essa al
Mannai. “We strived to
ensure that children of all
capacities were able to enjoy
Ramadan. We were overjoyed
to see these children
enjoy Ramadan as everyone
else does, almost with more
spirit and enthusiasm.”
For this event, ROTA invited
children from partnered
organisations to participate in
the evening’s activities. The
Dhreima Qatar Foundation
Orphanage, Best Buddies, Al
the Qatari Center of Social
the Qatar Society for
selected five children to
attend the iftar.
Prior to the iftar, an imam
offered a sermon (khutbah)
on the values of Ramadan.
“This is the very first time I
have ever worked with children
with special needs. Even
though they have difficulties
that average children do not
face, what touched me was
their level of excitement,
attentiveness, and unqualified
commitment to the activities.
It felt like they were just
regular children. I feel that I
need to do more to help members
of my community, no
matter their needs,” said
Osama Eraky, a ROTA volunteer.
ROTA Community
Development Manager
Mohammed Abdulla Saleh
was pleased with the outcome
of the event and of the campaign
as a whole.
“We are delighted to see
that both the volunteers and
children enjoyed this event,”
said Saleh. “This would not
have been possible without
the support of our partnered
organisations, for which we
are grateful. We would also
like to thank the Ministry of
Awqaf and Islamic Affairs for
its support. Imams from the
ministry shared their wisdom
and thoughts on the virtues of
Ramadan at all our iftars,”
QT SPOTLIGHT ON LIBYA
Rebel fighters stamp on the head of Moamer Qadhafi statue as they celebrate inside Bab Al Aziziya compound, in Tripoli, recently. (AP)
‘ROUGH ROAD AHEAD FOR LIBYAN
NATIONAL TRANSITION COUNCIL’
After six months of bloody battles,
Libyan rebel group eventually captured
the capital Tripoli with little
resistance from Moamer Qadhafi’s
troops. This marked a significant
achievement in the struggle to save the
country from the grip of the dictator and
pave the way for a democratic government.
However, there have been some
apprehensions from people about what
becomes of the new Libya in the post-
Qadhafi era, especially with the inability
of the rebels to capture Qadhafi, his sons
and allies. Libya may be sitting on a keg
of gunpowder if Qadhafi and his cohorts
continue to live in a hiding. The rebels
have recently announced a $1.7 million
prize for whoever kills or capture
Qadhafi. Besides, the National Transition
Council is under pressure as the international
community is watching how it will
turn Libya into a safe and democratic
society where the rule of law reigns
supreme. Qatar Tribune’s Ihsan
Youssef, Muhammad Khouladi and
Aisha Sidahmed spoke to some Arab
expatriates to obtain their views about the
development in post-Qadhafi Libya.
Excerpts:
IT IS NOT YET TIME TO CELEBRATE VICTORY
Radi Amir, Tunisian
I think all these celebrations in Libya
should not take place until real victory is
achieved. Though Tripoli has been captured
by rebels, the conflict in Libya is still
far from over. Qadhafi can be dangerous
wherever he is while his faithful followers
are still fighting in some cities. What happened
is a quick and sudden change in
roles. Libyan rebels now face the challenge
of bringing stability and order to the country
after the civil war. They have very challenging
task before them. It is still hard to
foretell how things will evolve in the coming
weeks if Qadhafi and his sons are not
captured and put behind bars. In a latest
statement by Qadhafi, he said that he
would never give up. He said he has the
ability to fight for years. I think he meant
what he said and failure to capture him will
be a deadly mistake for the rebels.
QADHAFI MUST BE FOUND
Mohamed Jeloun, Libyan
I am little worried because the main players
in the Qadhafi regime are still on the
run and almost none of them has been
detained. As a Libyan citizen, I don’t feel
Libya is free as long as Qadhafi is free and
leading his loyalists who are capable of
causing destruction and chaos in the country.
I think the first task before the
National Transition Council (NTC) is to
arrest Qadhafi, his sons and members of
his regime that are still supporting him. I
think they realise the fact that Libya will
never be calm and peaceful as long as
Qadhafi is a free man. I am relieved to hear
that they put $1.7 million reward to anyone
who kills or arrest him, but what about
his son Saif al Islam? Saif al Islam is not
less dangerous than his father and they
should have also announced a reward for
his killing or arrest too. Hopefully, the
reward will encourage some of his close
supporters to kill him. I do not like to
sound pessimistic, but there is a great danger
of Qadhafi’s return to power or causing
a civil war if he is not killed or jailed.
REBELS ARE ON THE RIGHT PATH
Tamer Ahmed, Palestinian
Libya has entered a new phase in its history
with the rebels capturing Tripoli. It is
true they have not been completely successful
for not been able to kill Qadhafi or
his sons. But, I think, the rebels are moving
in the right direction. So far they were welcomed
by majority of the people in the
country and members of the international
community. They have been successful in
persuading NATO and other main players
in the UN to defreeze the Libyan assets. I do
not think the focus should be on how much
problems Qadhafi would cause. He is history
now. He is over and capturing him is just
a matter of time. Libyans should focus on
rebuilding their country and rebuilding
bridges between Libyan
tribes after the damage
caused by the civil war.
This is a new chapter in
Libyan history.
REBELS FACE THE CHALLENGE OF
KEEPING LIBYA UNITED
Abd El Ati, Egyptian
The rebels are not a homogenous bunch.
They came together from myriad of political
and ethnic groups. However, they have
a big challenge of keeping the country united
after taking full charge because there
are many influential people who are still
sympathetic to the old regime. Besides,
there are others who do not want foreign
interference in post-Qadhafi Libya. If we
consider what the Libyan rebels have done
during the battle, I think they will not need
any foreign troops to help them out. More
importantly, I don’t think American or
European governments will want to
finance or get into yet another difficult
deployment abroad. I also believe that
Libya’s National Transition Council will
groom a stable armed force and not ask for
external security supports.
LIBYANS AWAIT DEMOCRATIC
GOVERNMENT UNDER NTC
Ouiam Bertoussi, Moroccan
After six months of long and bloody fighting,
the rebels eventually entered Tripoli
with little or no resistance from Qadhafi
troops. The way people welcomed the
rebels into the capital city showed that
Readers’
QT Speakup
GAME ENDS: Libyan leader Moamer Qadhafi.
they were eagerly awaited by the residents.
The end of Qadhafi regime is a new beginning
for the people of
Libya. It is the end of a
tyrant regime and everybody
is happy about this
victory which came in
the Holy Month of
Ramadan. Libyans have high expectations
from the National Transition Council to
transform the country into a land of freedom
and good governance. I hope the
rebels will act responsibly in pushing the
country forward without creating bitterness
and unwarranted witch-hunting. All
eyes are now on the NTC to promote a
democratic Libya where human rights will
be valued.
ENERGY CRISIS LOOMS IN
POST-QADHAFI LIBYA
Sanaa Ahmed, Egyptian
Post-Qadhafi era is likely to revolve more
around energy and petroleum resources
in Libya as many countries will try to
make gains from the country’s oil
reserves. I am afraid crisis may loom large
over the approach these countries will
have to the National Transition Council
and the new government which will be
established soon for achieving their goals.
Qadhafi, now considered as a fugitive and
war criminal, provided oil and allowed
some companies to operate in the country.
But, I think the countries that helped
the rebels during the struggles would venture
to tap the oil reserves for their benefits.
This may not be favourable for
Libyans in the long run.
TIME TO CREATE A NEW LIBYA
El Mehdi Ibourk, Moroccan
It is great news that Qadhafi regime finally
crumbled under the rebels’ feet. With
Qadhafi’s frequent calls urging his followers
to fight against the NATO and rebels,
Tripoli was captured easily by the rebel
fighters.
The Libyan people have suffered tremendously
under Qadhafi’s rule for over four
decades. Now, they have the chance to
start a new life with a generally accepted
government. I believe this is the time for
all threats against civilians to stop and
create a new Libya – a state based on
freedom and not fear; on democracy and
not tyranny and dictatorship; on the will
of the many, not the whims of a few.
LIBYANS SHOULD LEARN
FROM IRAQ MISTAKES
Mostapha Hakeem, Tunisian
People are happy about end of the tyrannical
rule under Moamer Qadhafi. After
six months of conflict, Libyans can now
rejoice for sending Qadhafi packing in
the Holy Month of Ramadan.
Apparently, the NTC has earned people’s
support to achieve the feat. It is
very encouraging that the NTC has
already spoken of its post-Qadhafi
plans, which would include the establishment
of a constitutional authority
and internationally overseen elections.
However, I think Libyans should learn
from the mistakes of Iraq if they want
their country to become what they and
the world hope for. The National
Transition Council also needs to eschew
notions of sectarianism or religious or
political differences in order to keep the
country together. People of the new
Libya aspire for freedom, democracy
and fairness in all sectors of the society.
LIBYA SITUATION MAY GET COMPLICATED
Salem Abdulrahman, Libyan
Some weak points in the National
Transitional Council as well as regional
conflict that may erupt over control of
resources will cast shadows on the current
achievement in Libya. These may
make the situation more complicated
than ever before. I think that control of
power in Libya will be very complicated
for the National Transitional Council
taking into account the fact that political
differences have emerged among
rebels while revolting against Qadhafi. I
hope that National Transitional Council
will put an end to the possibilities of
dividing Libya into tiny territories and
find a way of bridging the gaps among
the citizens. It should be noted that the
National Transition Council in Libya is
not a democratically elected government.
It is a mere assembly of Libyan
tribal leaders along with some defected
Qadhafi loyalists and representatives of
civil societies.
NTC SHOULD LAY FOUNDATION
OF CONFIDENCE AMONG THE PEOPLE
Abdulgader Shahoud, Libyan
The struggle for the new Libya is a collective
movement of all tribes in the
country. We hope that the spirit with
which the group came together to fight
Qadhafi will continue. This revolution
has shifted people’s focus away from
tribalism to nationalism. However, I do
not rule out the possibilities of dispute
among the tribal leaders and the remnants
of political figures in Qadhafi
regime, especially when it comes to control
of oil revenues. I would implore the
National Transitional Council to lay the
foundation of confidence and trust
among people.
THERE WILL BE GREAT INVESTMENT
OPPORTUNITIES IN LIBYA
Shahid Hyari, Libyan
Investors, who were waiting for the
dust of war to settle in Lybia, will find
great opportunites in the post-Qadhafi
Libya. If peace eventually reigns in the
country, the economy will flourish again
and the generality of Libya populace
will benefit. We hope that there will be
no crisis in gas and oil sectors, which
are the main source of income for the
country. I expect that there will be an
economic boom in Libya that will grab
the attention of the western investors
and companies.
