CLEAN AIR SOLUTIONS for WATER & WASTEWATER APPLICATIONS
PREVENTING ODORS & CORROSION + ELIMINATING THE RISK OF TOXIC GAS RELEASES
Purafil, Inc. is the leading manufacturer of dry-chemical and biological media and scrubbers that eliminate problematic gases in the water
and wastewater industries. We are a worldwide single-source provider of engineered, media, filters, systems and corrosion monitoring
instrumentation. As part of our committment to our ISO 9001:2008 quality management system, we perform rigerous quality assurance
tests on all of our products. Purafil’s superior clean air products provide the following municipal solutions:
• ODOR CONTROL: to eliminate odorous gases from sewage collection and processing operations.
• TOXIC GAS SCRUBBING: to prevent accidental chemical releases at facilities storing hazardous quantities of toxic gases,
specifically chlorine, sulfur dioxide and ammonia.
• CORROSION CONTROL: to protect electronic equipment from premature failure due to corrosion.
PURAFIL’S DRY-SCRUBBING MEDIA ADVANTAGE
Purafil’s dry-scrubbing media is either bulk-filled within our engineered equipment
or inside our MediaPAK modules or PuraGRID ® filters which are then inserted into
the equipment. We offer a variety of patented dry-scrubbing granular media
formulations to eliminate odorous, toxic, and corrosive gases. Our media permanently
removes gases from the air through chemisorption. During this instantaneous process,
gases are adsorbed, absorbed and captured throughout the entire volume of the
media. The gases are then chemically transformed into harmless solids that remain
trapped inside the media. Once the gases are removed from your environment, they
cannot re-enter the airstream.
As a complimentary service, we help you optimize your system’s performance by
testing remaining media life. Our laboratory technicians analyze samples from your
system(s) and provide a report indicating the necessary media replacement date
based on specific conditions in your facility.
Purafil also provides a patented biological mixed media which uses a natural biotrickling
microbial process to remove odorous gases. Please see our biological section
for more information on this advanced bio filtration technology.
PURAFIL ENGINEERED MEDIA SCRUBBERS
Purafil’s engineered dry-media scrubbers offer several advantages compared to cometitive products. Our patented
media formulations are manufactured using special chemicals, or impregnants, that react with odorous gases and
remove them from the airstream. Known as chemisorption, this process converts odors to harmless salts. Once the
gases are removed from the environment, they cannot re-enter the airstream. As a result, Purafil’s engineered
media do not typically require special disposal precautions.
Purafil’s engineered media perform well at all temperatures and levels of humidity, they are non-flammable, UL
Classified and remove a broad range of odors. Our media are also life testable. Through laboratory analysis, Purafil
can predict when media must be replaced which can help to prevent gas breakthrough and premature media
disposal. Purafil offers a large selection of engineered media scrubbers to control odors in various municipal settings.
ODOR APPLICATIONS
LARGE AIRFLOW ODOR CONTROL
BIOLOGICAL SCRUBBER MEDIA
BIOLOGICAL AIR TREATER MIXED-MEDIA
The patented technologies within Purafil’s Biological Air Treater provides a more efficient and cost-effective odor abatement
and VOC treatment than other biological removal systems. The innovative BAT media consists of proprietary blends of specially
formulated polyurethane foam cubes and polypropylene spacers that are uniquely supported for the immobilized bio-catalysts,
resulting in higher concentration and distribution of biofilm compared to conventional and alternative biotrickling filter systems.
HONEYWELL’S PROPRIETARY MIXED-MEDIA PACKAGING
The polyurethane foam cubes provide incredible surface area per unit volume to host microbial biofilms. Polypropylene
spacers supply substantial void volume and structural integrity for tall beds, as well as enhanced mass transfer and excellent
hydraulic dispersion and distribution. The unique mixed-media support allows for control of surface area and void space,
with the result of reduced pressure drops across the deign bed. Ratios of foam-to-plastic vary with engineering design and
application, and are used to control biofilm depth and pressure drop. BAT mixed-media beds can be used in biofilters to
produce highly-efficient bulk removal, intermediate removal, and polishing zones. Purafil’s BAT biofilter & biotrickling filter
technology is amenable for any biofiltration application.
The polishing filtration in this high-tech system is Purafil’s proprietary Odormix SP dry media which has been specially engineered
to provide the highest amount of permanganate (the active ingredient) for increased capacity and will not off-gas like carbon
products. Odormix SP Media demonstrates a higher working capacity for broad-spectrum oxidation of contaminants in
actual field conditions, where multiple gas challenges are present.
PURAFIL’S BIOLOGICAL SCRUBBER VS.COMPETITORS’ WET CHEMICAL SCRUBBER
The technology transfer and license of Honeywell’s patented biological odor controltechnology has provided additional capabilities to Purafil’s line of clean air product
solutions. The Biological Air Treater (BAT) can be used for high airflow and concentrationlevels of hydrogen sulfide. The other typical competitive technology for this
application are wet chemical scrubbers. When comparing these two technologies with an airflowof 10,500 cfm (17,850 m3/hr) and a hydrogen sulfide concentration
of 143 ppm (200mg/m3) with standard temperature and pressure, the Purafil Biological Air Treater (BAT) is approximately $3.8 million less than a
competitive wet chemical scrubber over a 20 year time period.

TOXIC GAS
SCRUBBING
DRY-SCRUBBING TECHNOLOGY
Instead of using toxic liquid caustic to neutralize gases, the EGS uses dry-scrubbing media. These media have indefinite shelf life - if they’re
not used, you don't need to replace them. Purafil manufactures three kinds of media specifically for the EGS:
CSO to remove Cl 2 and SO 2
CHLOROSORB ® ULTRA*to remove Cl 2
PURACARB ® AM to remove NH 3
Whether new or spent, all three media are:
• non-toxic
• non-hazardous
• landfill disposable
• UL Classified
Because we manufacture our own media, we have quality control and can guarantee availability and fast
delivery. We also offer value-added laboratory services to ensure optimal media and system performance.
* Chlorosorb ® Ultra functions at -40° Fahrenheit
PREVENTING TOXIC GAS RELEASES
SMALL TO LARGE AIRFLOW TOXIC GAS CONTROL
DRY-MEDIA SCRUBBERS
Facilities storing hazardous quantities of chlorine (Cl 2 ), sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) or ammonia (NH 3 ) must invest in emergency standby
equipment to prevent accidental chemical releases.
PURAFIL EMERGENCY GAS SCRUBBER
Purafil’s dry-chemical Emergency Gas Scrubber (EGS) is designed to remove the entire contents
of a fully loaded Cl 2 /SO 2 /NH 3 cylinder in a worst-case release scenario. The EGS works with
cylinders storing 150 pounds, 1 ton, 2 tons or 3 tons or more of Cl 2 /SO 2 /NH 3 and discharges
less than 25 parts per billion.
Purafil manufactures two designs of the EGS:
1. Aluminum, multi-stage scrubber with horizontal airflow
2. Fiberglass vessel with vertical airflow
PURAFIL ALUMINUM EGS
PURAFIL FIBERGLASS EGS
DRY SCRUBBERS VERSUS WET SCRUBBERS
Dry scrubbers have several advantages over conventional wet scrubbers. For instance, dry scrubbers require significantly
less maintenance than wet scrubbers. They have just one moving part—a blower. No need to hassle with pumps, spray
nozzles, or pH controls!
Dry scrubbers are much safer, too. Instead of using toxic liquid caustic, they neutralize gases with non-toxic dry-scrubbing
pellets. These pellets are called media, and they permanently transform gases into harmless solids.
Unlike liquid caustic, dry-scrubbing media are immediately available for instantaneous reaction, regardless of the load
rate. With wet scrubbers, you have to measure the amount of gas fed into the scrubber.
Purafil’s dry emergency gas scrubber discharges less than 25 parts per billion, but wet scrubbers discharge 1-4 parts per
million. Call Purafil to help you transform your caustic wet scrubber to a safe dry scrubber with our patented retrofit plan!
PURAFIL’S PATENTED RETROFIT PLAN FOR
WET TO DRY CONVERSION IS AS EASY AS 1, 2, 3!
Cc
CORROSION
CONTROL
Monitoring air quality is an essential part of your corrosion control program. Purafil's OnGuard ® 3000 (OG3) Monitor protects
your electronics by measuring in real time the level of corrosion in your facility and transmitting the readings to your SCADA
system. With the OnGuard, you can log cumulative or incremental data to detect and measure isolated corrosioncausing
events and potential effects on equipment reliability.
The Purafil OG3 Monitor uses highly sensitive sensors to provide accurate and reliable corrosion monitoring within
± 0.5-1% of full span. All measurements can be related to the International Society of Automation Standard 71.04-
1985, which defines an environment as either G1, G2, G3, or GX based on the corrosion severity level and potential
effects on equipment reliability.
Ideal for control rooms, motor control centers, rack rooms, and other areas where corrosion is a concern, the
OnGuard allows for action to be taken before problems develop. In turn, this prevention increases the reliability
of electronic and electrical instrumentation and reduces the cost of maintenance repairs.
Purafil’s OG3 can transmit real-time data to your SCADA system via a 4-20 mA output signal. In addition, the Purafil
OG3 contains internal temperature and humidity sensors and can be battery-operated for data logging functionality.
