Controlling Corrosion and Increasing Reliability
Corroded pin connectors
Corroded circuit board
Magnified view of a corroded circuit board
Air is the biggest threat to the reliability of your electronics.
The air in your facility contains many types of
pollutants that corrode fine electronics and integrated
circuits.
Corrosion is the deterioration of metal due to the presence
of acid gases. These gases attack edge connectors,
pin connectors, IC plug-in sockets, wire-wrap connections,
and other metal components. Corrosion leads to
blocked currents, brittle connection points, overheated
electrical systems, slowed production, and expensive
equipment repairs. The end result: decreased reliability,
increased maintenance, and lost revenues.
Purafil's dry-chemical systems protect capital-intensive
equipment, including computer systems, compressors,
switchgear, etc. against corrosive failures. For
over 30 years, Purafil has been the leading manufacturer
of clean air solutions for industrial facilities. We
maintain nearly 20,000 installations worldwide in:
• Fertilizer plants
• Gas generation facilities
• Oil refineries
• Petrochemical plants
• Pulp and paper mills
• Smelting plants
• Steel mills
• Copper mines
• Textile manufacturers
• Pharmaceutical plants
Our systems are housed in motor control centers, rack
rooms, and central control rooms. With a single circuit
board costing as much as $10,000, a dry-chemical system
from Purafil saves time and money. A Purafil system
also:
• ensures the smooth operation of
production processes
• prevents lost revenue due to repairs
and downtime
• extends service life of sensitive
electronics and instrumentation
Shown on page 5, ISA Standard 71.04-1985 is the
accepted guideline for warranties of electronic equipment.
This standard classifies the level of airborne contamination
that is safe for the reliable operation of electronics.
Because Purafil designs units based on the ISA
standard, our systems guarantee Class G1 air. In Class
G1 environments, corrosion is not a factor in determining
equipment reliability.
Clean Air Guarantee
Purafil has contributed to the development of ISA
Standard 71.04-1985, which classifies the level of airborne
contamination that is safe for electronics. As part
of Purafil's Clean Air Guarantee, industrial facilities
worldwide can be assured that contaminant levels will
be reduced to the target parameters established by ISA
so that corrosion is NOT a factor in determining equipment
reliability. A controlled space such as a control
room or motor control center is designed in accordance
with strict environmental criteria, to protect sensitive
electronic/electrical equipment from damage caused by
corrosive gases.
Air Quality Standard
ISA Standard 71.04-1985 titled "Environmental
Equipment Conditions for Process Management and
Control Systems, Airborne Contaminants," has become
the accepted guide for determining the air quality in
computer room environments. Purafil systems are
designed to reduce contamination levels to those
required for safe operation of electronic/electrical
equipment.
According to ISA, reactivity monitoring provides a
quantitative measure of the overall corrosion potential
of an environment. Reactivity monitoring involves the
placement of specially prepared copper "coupons" in
the operating environments. Over time, acid gases will
tarnish the coupons, and corrosion films will develop.
Measured in angstroms*, the rate of corrosion build up
determines the environment's ISA classification (see
chart on page 5). 4
*(1)10 millionth of a millimeter (Å)
Air Quality Classifications Defined
Mild - an environment sufficiently well
controlled that corrosion is not a factor in
determining equipment reliability.
Moderate - an environment in which the
effects of corrosion are measurable and may be
a factor in determining equipment reliability.
Harsh - an environment in which there is a
high probability that corrosive attack will occur.
These harsh levels should prompt further
evaluation resulting in environmental controls
or specially designed and packaged equipment.
Severe - electronic/electrical equipment are
not expected to survive in these environments.
Environmental Monitoring
Corrosion Classification Coupons
Reactivity monitoring using Corrosion Classification
Coupons (CCC) is a widely accepted technique used to
characterize the destructive potential of an environment.
Because many of the contaminants targeted for control
are corrosive in nature (e.g., hydrogen sulfide and sulfur
dioxide), reactivity monitors have long been used to
gauge the quality of ambient air and to indicate the
effectiveness of pollution control strategies. Purafil's
CCC analysis results correlate directly to ISA Standard
71.04-1985.
Coupon Placement: CCCs are typically employed in
industrial settings to determine the effect of corrosion
on sensitive electronics. Coupons are a reliable, costeffective
means of classifying external and internal
environments. As part of the Purafil's monitoring strategy,
individual CCCs are placed in the following areas:
• Control rooms
• Rack rooms
• Motor control centers
• Laboratories
• Critical parts storage rooms
• Mainframe computer rooms
Laboratory Analysis: Following a period of 30 to 90
days, the CCCs are collected and sent to Purafil's laboratory.
The purpose of CCC analysis is to determine the
type and rate of corrosion buildup (Å/30 days). This
method of reactivity monitoring has been extensively
researched by Batelle Laboratories and Bell Telephone.
Coupon Analysis Report: The results of Purafil's
environmental analysis are reported and made accessible
to your local Purafil representative through our
online Installation Tracking System, available 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week. Included in the report are the general
classes of gases present, estimated concentration
levels, and humidity effects in your environment.
OnGuard ® Corrosion Monitors
Purafil's OnGuard ® series of monitors continuously
detect and transmit data in contaminant concentrations
at levels as low as one part per billion. OnGuard readings
also correlate to ISA's classification scheme.
Unlike Corrosion Classification Coupons, OnGuard
readings are real time, which allows preventive action
to be taken before serious corrosion damage occurs.
OnGuard Continuous Corrosion Transmitter
(CCT): The OnGuard CCT logs cumulative or incremental
data to detect and measure isolated corrosioncausing
events and potential effects on equipment reliability.
The CCT gauges in real time the amount of
corrosion forming on copper and silver surfaces and
transmits this information to your building management
system. These measurements are directly related
to ISA severity levels.
OnGuard 2000 Atmospheric Corrosion Monitor:
The OnGuard 2000 helps solve corrosion problems
before severe damage occurs. The OnGuard 2000 continuously
measures the real-time effects of corrosion as
well as temperature, relative humidity, and optional differential
room pressure. Using this data, the monitor
projects your environment's ISA severity level and
helps increase the reliability of electronic instruments.
Measurements can be read directly on the monitor's
LCD panel or uploaded to your personal computer or
distributed control system.
Design Requirements and Product Offering
To design a controlled environment that will conform to
ISA standards, Purafil takes into consideration proper
room sealing, room pressurization, room recirculation,
and humidity and temperature control.
Sealing and Room Air Pressurization
A controlled space must be positively sealed and pressurized
to prevent the infiltration of contaminated air.
Seal the space using airlock entries/exits and close all
holes, cracks, wall and ceiling joints, and cable and utility
penetrations. Purafil recommends a positive pressure
of 0.05 to 0.1 iwg, which is achieved by introducing
outdoor air through an air purification system at a rate
of 1 to 3 air changes per hour (2 to 5% of the room volume
per minute).
Room Air Recirculation
Purafil designs gas-phase air purification systems that
function as either pressurization-only systems or pressurization-and-recirculation
systems. Use a pressurization-only
system when the space is properly sealed, the
level of pedestrian traffic is minimal, contaminant concentrations
are low, and negative pressure ductwork is
located outside the space. The pressurization system
removes gaseous contaminants from outdoor intake air
and provides clean air to the protected space.
In all other cases, Purafil recommends recirculation
through an air purification unit at a rate of 10 to 15 air
changes per hour (17 to 25% of the total room volume
per minute). The recirculation system purifies air within
the space to maintain the lowest corrosion levels.
Humidity: ISA S71.04-1985 recommends
Purafil Tub Scrubber System
Corrosion Control Systems
Purafil manufactures a broad line of gas-phase air
purification systems to meet the unique requirements
of each air purification application. All systems offer a
customized selection of prefilter, chemical, and final
filter sections. Purafil systems are grouped into two
categories: self-contained systems and HVAC integrated
systems.
Self-Contained Systems
A self-contained system consists of housing to hold
Purafil gas-phase air purification media and a blower
section to move the contaminated airstream through
the media bed. Purafil's offers the following self-contained
systems:
• Tub Scrubber System
• Deep Bed Scrubber
• Positive Pressurization Unit
• Corrosive Air Unit
HVAC Integrated Systems
HVAC integrated systems offer the confidence that all
parts of the air handling system will work together.
Integrated systems are dependent upon the central
HVAC system for operation and require space in the
mechanical or machine rooms in which they can be
placed.
An HVAC integrated unit, the Purafil Side Access system
is used to filter low to medium concentrations of
outside gaseous contaminants in less polluted areas of
process industries. The system can also be used for
recirculation purposes to maintain low contaminant
levels.
Purafil Positive Pressurization Unit
The Tub Scrubber System is bulk filled with media by
way of fill chute openings at the top of the unit. The
Deep Bed Scrubber is also a bulk-filled system but can
also be tracked to house MediaPAK PK-12 disposable
modules. Factory filled with the user's choice of Purafil
media, PK-12 modules significantly reduce maintenance
and service time. Purafil's Positive
Pressurization Unit and Corrosive Air Unit are also
designed to house PK-12 modules.
Self-contained systems are separate from the HVAC
system. They are designed for higher gas challenge
levels and allow for easier retrofits, the use of standard
air handlers, and less complex air balancing.
Purafil MediaPAK PK-12 Module
The MediaPAK PK-12 disposable plastic modules are
factory filled with Purafil dry-chemical media and sent
to the user ready to be installed. Constructed of highimpact
polystyrene, the rigid frame eliminates the possibility
of bypass air and guarantees maximum system
efficiency for the life of the media.
Purafil's modular systems are tracked to house
MediaPAK PK-12 modules, which significantly reduce
installation and maintenance time. In fact, no tools are
required for installation or replacement.
The figure below shows a side view of the MediaPAK
module within the Purafil Side Access System. The
unique V-shaped bed of the module increases filter efficiency
while reducing pressure drop.
Purafil Tub Scrubber System
Tub Scrubber System (TSS)
Purafil's TSS provides clean air in controlled
environments housing sensitive computer
equipment. The TSS eliminates corrosive
gases typically found in industrial settings. A
single three-foot deep media bed makes the
TSS particularly effective in high contaminant
areas. To meet your specific design
requirements, Purafil offers systems for airflows
from 500 to 6000 cfm.
Constructed of corrosion-resistant materials,
the TSS is designed for one or more years of
low-maintenance service; its three-foot bed is
bulk filled with Purafil dry-chemical media.
Media changeout is simple and fast as the filters,
blower section, and media bed are easily
accessible.
Positive Pressurization Unit (PPU)
The PPU is a self-contained system designed to provide
pressurization air that is free of corrosive gases to environments
containing sensitive electronics. Designed to
stand alone, it can also be used in conjunction with
Purafil's Corrosive Air Unit when pressurization and
recirculation are required. Key application areas for the
PPU are computer rooms, control rooms, motor control
centers, and electrical equipment rooms.
The PPU is available in four horizontal and four vertical
configurations ranging from 500 to 4000 cfm. The
flexibility of the PPU design allows for a solution to be
tailored to meet your particular air filtration needs and
requirements. The system is tracked to house Purafil's
disposable MediaPAK modules, which are factory
filled with Purafil media and sent to the user ready to
be installed. Disposable modules significantly reduce
installation and maintenance time. An optional variable
frequency drive can be added to achieve desired
airflow.
depth selection table below to calculate the depth of
your unit. Actual unit depth is the sum of the depths of
each filter section. This figure is rounded to the next
highest inch if the total is 3/8 in (9.5 mm) or more. See
the example below:
For Model 2P-12M-12F-RL:
Actual Unit Depth = First Section + Chemical Module Section + Final Filter Section + Rain Louver/Bird Screen
45.70 in 2P = 8.00 in 12M = 18.00 in 12F = 18.00 in RL = 3.50 in
Compressor Intake Filter (CIF)
The CIF is a highly efficient multi-stage air purification
system that removes gases and particulates to prevent
corrosion. In the absence of CIF protection, these contaminants
can cause reduced efficiency, costly repairs,
and equipment downtime.
Air moves through the CIF system in several sections,
each treating the air and removing various airborne
contaminants. These sections are as follows:
Purafil Compressor Intake Filter
Standard Features
• Rain louver/bird screen
• 12-24 in bag filter
• 2 or 3 passes of Purafil chemical media in
disposable MediaPAK modules
• Plenum with mesh cone
• 1 or 2 in prefilter
• 5 or 12 in final filter
Optional Features
• 12 in HEPA filter
• Booster fan
Corrosion of compressor intercooler impedes
heat dissipation and reduces airflow area.
The first section of the process is a particulate
prefilter designed to remove dust and dirt. This
filter removes particulates 10 microns in diameter
or greater. The primary purpose of the prefilter
is to protect the chemical filters and the high
efficiency final filter. The prefilter retains its
structural integrity in moist environments, so it
also serves as a low efficiency mist eliminator.
The second section is for chemical filtration—
it is where Purafil dry-chemical media is used to
remove gaseous contaminants from the airstream.
The CIF is tracked to house Purafil's disposable
MediaPAK modules, which are factory filled
with Purafil media for easy installation and
replacement. Multiple stages of media may be
required to eliminate all gases of concern.
The last section is the final particulate filter. This
filter is a high efficiency type and removes
particulates equal to or greater than 1-2 microns.
The system is manufactured of weatherproofed 14 gage
galvanized steel. Aluminum double wall, stainless, and
cold-rolled steel may also be specified. Along with the
different materials of construction, the CIF can be
epoxy coated to prevent corrosion on the exterior of the
unit. The chemical filtration element contains disposable
MediaPAK modules.
Purafil has revolutionized the air cleaning industry.
In the early 1960s, we developed and patented
"Purafil" pellets to remove gaseous pollutants from
the air in commercial and industrial settings. Since
then, we have created a wide selection of media to
eliminate thousands of gases and odors that harm
people, interrupt manufacturing processes, and
destroy priceless paintings and artifacts.
Purafil responds to individual air quality needs
before, during, and after the sale.
Since no two gas-phase challenges are exactly alike,
we tailor our systems to meet specific conditions in
each application. Before implementing filtration systems,
we perform air quality assessments to determine
the best method for removing contaminants.
From there, we customize units to fit virtually any
room design, including retrofit situations. We install
real-time air quality monitors to measure reactivity
levels, and we conduct several value-added technical
services to verify system performance. Our local,
factory-trained representatives examine systems to
ensure proper maintenance and foster long-term customer
relationships.
Purafil has paved the way in the gas-phase filtration
industry for over 30 years.
As a leader in air purification, we have the responsibility
to set standards and conduct research. We play an
active role in devising contamination control regulations
in the markets we serve. Our scientists head committees,
attend scientific forums in various countries,
and submit articles to international trade journals. We
are supported by an expansive network of representative
firms in the United States and over 50 countries
worldwide. Our collective expertise and intense focus
are the reasons Purafil continues to lead the industry in
the development of superior clean air solutions.
Purafil takes every step necessary to provide quality
systems.
Because we manufacture and test our products at company
headquarters, we have extensive proficiency with
our systems. We are ISO 9001/2000 certified, so we
on research and development.
Purafil has been widely recognized for innovative
air filtration systems.
We have received extensive coverage from local,
national, and international media. We are the proud
recipient of several prestigious awards, including the
U.S. Presidential "E" and "E Star" awards for commerce,
the Fast Tech 50 Award, the World Trade 100,
and the R&D 100 Award.
