Dear Friends & Supporters,
WOW! The Center turned thirty this year! What
a milestone. You helped us achieve this and I am
very grateful. We’ve done so many incredible
things in those thirty years but foremost are the
changes we made in the lives of so many people
– especially children – as a result of our ability to
communicate and teach as well as entertain.
The future holds many challenges but the most
exciting one is to create a home for the genius
of Jim Henson and all that implies. We have been
challenged to create a museum that will change
our image forever and take us from a “school
house” to a better reflection of our uniqueness
here in Metro-Atlanta, the U.S.A. and, yes,
the world. Nowhere can you find an institution
like ours. I feel that the Center helps “define”
Atlanta’s landscape and with this challenge, we can be
recognized even more for our singularly spectacular
contribution to this community.
Over the past thirty years we have had many
milestones and you may remember many of them.
Newsweek has called the Center “one of the most
exciting companies in American theater,” while
MSN.com has repeatedly named the Center one
of the top ten children’s museums in the nation.
We have received twelve UNIMA-USA Citations
of Excellence, which are considered to be the
‘Oscars’ of puppetry. We have received three Abby
Awards from the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.
The Center was the only theater group chosen
by the Cultural Olympiad of the Atlanta Olympics
to participate in all four years of its arts festival
program. This spring the Center was selected as
one of only three recipients of the Teachers’ Choice
Award for Best Content Provider – Fine Arts
Museum; this marks the fourth straight year that
the Center has won this award!

Twentieth Anniversary: Cheryl Henson is in

The Center receives a challenge grant of $1.25
million from the Ford Foundation for exemplary
fiscal management; the Center is one of 28 arts organizations
chosen (the only one in Georgia).
The Center completes a $3.4 million capital
campaign which funds many physical improvements,
including a state-of-the-art scene shop.

Highlighting some of the performance and design contributions
Jim Henson and his collaborators have made to the world of
puppetry, this exhibit features the technological advances behind
Fraggle Rock, Labyrinth, and more. This exhibition was designed
and curated by Professor Bradford Clark of Bowling Green State
University. Clark worked very closely with the Henson family and
the Jim Henson Legacy to create an informative and wonderfully
designed exhibition.

Kevin Clash, who plays “Elmo” on Sesame Street and visited the
exhibit during the opening weekend in September 2008 said,
“[They created] an environment for each project that was done
over the years. It’s such an honor. I’d love to have all of the [Henson]
puppeteers get on a plane and come out and see this.”

New Acquisitions
This was a very active year for acquiring
new museum objects. Through the
generosity of our donors, we were able
to acquire puppets made by Chicago’s
Kungsholm Miniature Grand Opera
Theatre and a Pulcinella figure created
by Gianluca Di Matteo of Turin, Italy. In
addition, we also received new collections
of Chinese marionettes and rod
puppets. The rod puppet donation is
particularly exciting because it is a full set
from a single show, including the trunk in
which the puppets were carried.
Along with the Center’s on-site exhibits, puppets from the museum
collection are on display at several locations throughout Atlanta.
The Coca-Cola Company Headquarters
During the month of May 2009, the Center for Puppetry Arts displayed Asian puppets at
Coca-Cola’s headquarters in downtown Atlanta. The exhibition represented a sample of Asian
puppetry found in the Museum’s collection. Puppetry is an integral part of Asian culture; the
stories told through the puppets are well-known, and the characters are recognized throughout
the continent. In Asia, the puppet theater transcends mere entertainment and becomes an
important vehicle for the oral transmission of myth, religion, and culture.
The exhibition showcased the rich artistic qualities of the figures: the striking array of colors,
the bright hues, and the subtle nuances. While the diverse artistic qualities of Asian puppets
reflect the myriad cultures of Asia, the exhibition also explored the similarities among the
puppets. Most of the puppets of Asia are representative of the four major styles of puppetry:
rod, hand, string, and shadow. The exhibition displayed styles of puppetry from China, Taiwan,
Indonesia, Thailand, India, and Japan.

Pinocchio Day at the Center!
On March 11, 2009, the Center for Puppetry Arts and Walt Disney Studios Home
Entertainment partnered together to host “Pinocchio Day.” To recognize the 70th Anniversary
of Disney’s film, Pinocchio¸ a one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted “Platinum Edition” Pinocchio puppet
was displayed at the Center. Standing 10” tall, the special puppet is one of only 375 in the world
created by master puppeteer Bob Baker of Los Angeles. This unique puppet was selected to
go through the process of electroplating – forming a solid metal coating on the world’s most
famous marionette.
In an amusing nod to Pinocchio’s Italian roots and the movie’s 70th Anniversary celebration, a
custom 70-foot-long Italian submarine sandwich was fashioned to resemble Pinocchio’s iconic
nose as it protruded from an image of Pinocchio’s
face. The sandwich served as lunch for approximately
150 school children in attendance at the celebration.

Distance Learning
The Center’s unique Distance Learning Program, a dynamic, interactive virtual field
trip experience, continues to present arts-infused programming to participants across
North America and beyond. Since 1998, the Distance Learning Program has used
interactive videoconferencing to primarily reach rural and underserved audiences
that are unable to access the Center’s hands-on educational programs due to time,
distance, and/or financial barriers. Participants can learn about science, social studies,
language arts, puppetry in other cultures, and other topics through these engaging,
innovative programs that are tailored toward various age levels and audiences.
The 2008-09 year in Distance Learning brought many accolades to the program:
Teacher’s Choice Award, CILC Pinnacle Award, Tech Award/Microsoft Education
Category, and The Jim Henson Community Honor. Programming expanded all over
Alberta, Canada, and several new states in the U.S. were added to our “list served.”
Locally, the Distance Learning Department worked with Clayton County Schools
(GA) to provide student and teacher workshops through a grant from the Georgia
Council for the Arts; this program served nearly 900 participants. Teachers participated
in a “Spiders” Teacher Workshop to earn one PLU credit via videoconferencing.
This project produced encouraging assessment results in the area of arts and technology
for this school district.

Jim Henson Community Award
The 2008-2009 Jim Henson Community Award was an
unexpected highlight of the year for Distance Learning.
Established in 2005, the awards program acknowledges
organizations, individuals, or products that reflect the core
values and philosophy of the legendary Jim Henson and the
company he founded. Criteria used in the evaluation process include
a commitment to creativity, innovative applications of art and
technology, and inspiration of others. “The recipients of this year’s Jim
Henson Honors demonstrate true creativity and commitment to innovation,”
said co-CEO Brian Henson of The Jim Henson Company. “They have
raised the bar in their respective fields, from Shigeru Miyamoto’s groundbreaking
work fusing entertainment and technology at Nintendo,
to the Center for Puppetry Arts’ dedication to enriching lives through
arts education. This year’s honorees strongly reflect the traditions of
The Jim Henson Company.”
2008 Tech Award
The 2008 Tech Award recognized the
Center’s Distance Learning Program as
making a contribution to humanity through
technology and the arts. The Center was
one of five international recipients of
this award in the Microsoft Education
Laureate category. The Tech Museum in
Silicon Valley sponsors this event yearly
and provides an all-expenses paid week
for laureates to gather from around the
entire globe and share projects. While
there, the Center’s Distance Learning
Director, Patty Petrey Dees, presented a
program overview to students and faculty
at Santa Clara University.

Outreach
During the 2008-09 fiscal year, the Center for Puppetry Arts’ Outreach Program conducted
39 curriculum-based workshops in 10 Georgia counties. The program’s focus
is to expose groups to one of the oldest theater traditions in the world. Through group
interaction, students of all ages learn about this unique art form through the use of
puppets from around the world.
Students built and decorated their own puppets and learned simple puppet manipulation
through hands-on demonstrations. These activities were provided to numerous
public and private schools and community groups reaching 3,500 people. This includes
organizations such as The Salvation Army Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Atlanta and
Oconee Performing Arts Society (OPAS), which provide exposure of the arts to underserved
communities.
Since 2002, the Outreach Program has had an ongoing relationship with Camp Kudzu, a
non-profit organization providing education, recreation, and peer-networking programs for
children living with Type 1 diabetes in Georgia. Through puppetry workshops, campers
explore self-expression and creative individuality with their peers. Working as a team, the
campers perform and explore the capabilities of their own creations for an audience. This
helps to develop a positive self-image and reinforce that they are not alone in their struggle
with diabetes.

Spanish Translations
Thanks to the generous support of the Theatre Communications Group and the
Goizueta Foundation, the Center has been able to reach out to Atlanta’s local Hispanic/
Latino communities. Luis Hernandez (Don Quixote) and Blanca Underwood worked with
the Center’s marketing staff to translate the 2008-09 season’s materials into Spanish.
These materials include the Season Brochure as well as programs, Study Guides, and
Create-A-Puppet Workshop instructions for the bilingual shows.
Translation can be a very difficult process, especially when explaining an artistic
statement or the plot of a show. The Center is seeing positive results from its
engagement with local Spanish speakers and is making good progress toward
completing the benchmarks for the grants.

background information on the show,
the style of puppetry used in the
performance, a bibliography of books
that relate to the theme of the show,
a list of websites to find out more
information about show content, and
photos from the production.
PLU Classes
In spring 2009, the Center’s Education
Department submitted a Comprehensive
Plan for Professional Learning Unit (PLU)
Credits to the Georgia Department of
Education. All teachers in Georgia are required
to earn at least 10 PLU credits every five years
to maintain their Georgia Educator
Certificates. One PLU is awarded for every 10
contact hours of formal instruction. The plan
was approved for teachers to earn PLU credit
for a newly-created class called Puppetry in
the Classroom: An Interdisciplinary Approach for
Pre-K - 2nd Grade Teachers.

Create-A-Puppet Workshops
Create-A-Puppet Workshops are a special hands-on curriculum-based activity that accompanies every
Family Series performance at the Center. Children build and decorate their very own puppet to take
home. Each show features a different puppet custom-designed by a team of teaching artists in the Center’s
Education Department. On weekdays, groups also participate in a learning activity that relates to the show.
Meet Aidan’s Squid Monster
In May 2009, the Center for Puppetry Arts, the Atlanta History Center, and Atlanta Parent Magazine
worked together to host a coloring contest. After visiting Jim Henson exhibits at both museums,
Atlanta Parent Magazine readers were asked to submit drawings of their very own Henson-inspired
puppet. The drawings were posted on the magazine’s website and viewers were able to vote for their
favorite. The winning puppet was created by Aidan and, as part of his prize, his design was converted
into a Create-A-Puppet Workshop which was taught to his entire art class.
Jeff Domke, the Center’s Education Program Coordinator, used Aidan’s drawing to design a functioning
puppet that each of the students in the class could build. The workshop started out with Jeff giving an
overview of puppetry. He brought many puppets from around the world to teach the children about
how these puppets are used in various cultures. Afterward, the students followed directions to build
their puppet and were given a variety of materials to make their own Squid Monster. Aidan was treated
like a celebrity from both the press and his fellow students.

Film Series
The Center for Puppetry Arts Film Series is a unique showcase for rare and seldom-seen narrative
puppet films, documentaries about the lives of puppeteers, and experimental short films that feature
puppetry performed explicitly for the camera in both real-time and stop-motion animation. The Film
Series component of Center programming was cultivated from the ongoing Teen & Adult Education
Series in an effort to provide audiences with a greater appreciation for the scope and history of puppetry.

In August 2008, the Center was proud to present
the U.S. premiere of Pinocchio: Tale of a Puppet, a
fascinating documentary by Italian filmmaker Folco
Quilici. This carefully researched film examines
what makes Carlo Collodi’s Pinocchio so popular
across cultures, languages, and generations. Made
for French television, Pinocchio: Tale of a Puppet had
never been shown in the U.S. and was presented by
special arrangement between the filmmaker and the
Center’s Education Department.

Throughout the 2008-09 Season, the Center hosted a variety of artists from around North America.
The Center kicked off the season with SummerFest, which featured a series of two-week performances
by three visiting puppet troupes. Audiences were delighted with Tanglewood Marionette’s retelling of an
ancient Chinese legend in The Dragon King, Crabgrass Puppet Theatre’s hilarious marionette and shadow
puppet version of The Bremen Town Musicians, and Paul Mesner’s award-winning rod puppet adaptation
of Sleeping Beauty.
Performances of Teatro SEA’s La Cucarachita Martina (Martina, the Little Roach) and Dragon Art Studio’s
Old Man and the Monkeys & other Chinese Tales celebrated cultural diversity within our community.
Audiences also enjoyed sold-out performances of Tears of Joy Theatre’s Stellaluna and the amazing
shadow puppetry of Nappy’s Puppets.

Xperimental Puppetry Theater
For over twenty-five years, Xperimental Puppetry Theater (XPT) has fostered the
development and imagination of countless artists across the country. XPT exhibits the ultimate
puppet menagerie as artists and novices alike are brought together to collaborate,
experiment, and explore the vast possibilities within the art of puppetry.
“XPT has grown exponentially since its inception in 1980. This past year we received
over thirty applications from several cities in the U.S., France, England, and Serbia! Since
expanding the program in 2004 to include filmmakers, animators, and installation artists, we
have gained a larger audience and can provide them with a wider view of the many styles
of puppetry, from stop-motion animation to maskwork, shadows, sock puppets, robotics,
and object theater, to name a few. By utilizing new media and marketing the program to
artists on the web, XPT is gaining a reputation worldwide as a base for artistic growth and
experimentation, while retaining our connection with Atlanta’s vibrant artistic scene.”

2009 Loridans Arts Awards
This year, the Center’s Resident Puppet Builder, Jason von Hinezmeyer, was awarded a
prestigious Loridans Arts Encouragement Award and a grant of $10,000. Created to recognize the
accomplishments of individual artists in our community who contribute to the arts fabric of
Atlanta, the Encouragement Award also serves to encourage those artists to continue making
valuable contributions through their work.
Klimchak, a local composer, musician, and frequent contributing artist to Center productions,
was also honored with a Loridans Arts Medal. The Arts Medal, which comes with a grant of
$15,000, honors recipients for their artistic work and their long-term contributions to the city’s
cultural life.
The Charles Loridans Foundation was established in 1952 by Charles Loridans, a civil engineer
who built some of Atlanta’s most important buildings.
40 Under 40
With the Spring/Summer 2009 issue of UNIMA-USA’s Puppetry International magazine came the
announcement of “40 under 40 - quick takes on young masters, world-wide,” a listing of young
artists making a difference in the world of puppetry. Jason von Hinezmeyer and Michael Haverty,
both of the Center for Puppetry Arts, were among the recipients of this honor.
Coloring Contest
In conjunction with Weather Rocks!, the
Center held a “Color Our Skies” coloring
contest. Future Picassos in grades Pre-K
through 5th were welcomed to participate
in a one-of-a-kind, weather rockin’ showcase
of talent. Prizes included free tickets,
autographed photos of the cast, puppets,
and more! In addition, students who submitted
a picture were able to see their artwork
displayed at the Center throughout
the entire run of Weather Rocks!. A total of
255 entries were received as well as great
feedback from parents on how much
children enjoyed the activity.
Jason von Hinezmeyer joined the Center in 2002 as Resident Puppet Builder and has since
contributed puppet designs for two UNIMA award-winning productions and has also served
as co-creator, designer, and performer for Avanti, Da Vinci! The Secret Adventures of Leonardo
da Vinci and The Ghastly Dreadfuls: Compendium of Graveyard Tales and other Curiosities. Jason is
continuously investigating new techniques in robotics, electronic music, and filmmaking. “It is the
unique combination of master craftsmanship and bold innovation that sets him apart as a truly
valuable contributor to the field of puppetry,” stated Vince Anthony.
Michael Haverty has performed and directed extensively at the Center and has served as the
program director of the Center’s Xperimental Puppetry Theater program for the past five years.
In 2004, he founded Haverty Marionettes as Atlanta’s first and only theater company dedicated
solely to the creation of puppetry for adults. Haverty Marionettes continues to expand and
strengthen the puppetry community in Atlanta through innovative adaptations and original works.
Creative Loafing’s Curt Holman wrote,“Haverty could qualify as prime example and unofficial
spokesman for both Atlanta’s vibrant community of puppet artists and the larger national trend
as the art form comes of age.”

Volunteers
Like every non-profit, the Center depends on dedicated volunteers to assist in a variety of ways
in most of our departments. In Education, volunteers help with preparation and implementation
of the Create-A-Puppet Workshops. They also help prep materials for Distance Learning. The
library has volunteers who work on several projects, such as cataloging and organizing resources,
for months at a time. Many hours are spent helping the Development Department with Patron
Appreciation Parties, String Fling, and various office tasks. Volunteers have helped proof materials
prepared by the Marketing Department. The Museum’s Docent Program also has many dedicated
volunteers.

Junior League of Atlanta
The Center for Puppetry Arts has had a
partnership with the Junior League of
Atlanta for as long as the Center has been
established. Volunteers from the Junior
League conduct Create-A-Puppet Workshops
for several weeks during the winter. Students
from the Atlanta Public Schools participate
in these workshops and learn more about
puppetry and the show they attend here at
the Center.
Junior League members also volunteer by
helping to host Patron Parties for Center
sponsors and their guests. These events take
place throughout the year and run smoothly
because of the help they provide.

National Charity League
National Charity League (NCL) members
help with various needs around the Center’s
office when they are called upon. They help
with preparation for large events and everyday
tasks that keep the Center running. NCL
also volunteers at Patron Parties several

Press Highlights
The Center received great press coverage for all activities during the 2008-09 Season!
Some notable coverage included:
• September – America.gov announces that the Center’s Distance Learning
Department has won a Microsoft Education Award, one of the 2008 Tech Awards. “The
award recognizes the Center’s Distance Learning Program for improving education
quality for rural and low-income communities, as well as those with special needs, by
delivering arts lessons through interactive video-conferencing.”
• October – The Center is featured on the cover of Midtown - Culture, Cuisine and
Commerce, as well as in a feature article inside. The article discusses the “enduring vision”
of Vince Anthony and the celebration of the Center’s 30th anniversary and recognizes
the Center as a “singular internationally recognized facility that both produces
and attracts the best of puppetry arts worldwide…and enjoys global status for its role
in furthering and preserving this special art form.”
• December – Atlanta Magazine names the Center for Puppetry Arts as a “Best of
Atlanta Hall of Fame” member. “The Center for Puppetry Arts creates a universal
magic that’s hilarious (Cinderella Della Circus), heartbreaking (Anne Frank: Within and
Without), and adults only (Xperimental Puppetry Theater). The museum highlights the
worldwide history and cultural practice of puppetry and the workshops let everyone
have a hands-on try at being a puppeteer.”
• April – The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (AJC) highlights the Center’s Artistic
Director, Jon Ludwig. The article also covers Ludwig’s latest production, The Little
Pirate Mermaid and credits Ludwig as “the most consistently inventive theater artist
working in Atlanta today.”
• April – Public Broadcasting Atlanta’s show, This is Atlanta with Alicia Steele, produces
a wonderful segment that follows the building of the Center’s world premiere of The
Little Pirate Mermaid. Producer Gordon Ray works with the Center for Puppetry Arts’
Production Department to film various stages of the puppet building process and rehearsals
to help illustrate how the Center creates its productions.
• April – The AJC covers “Puppets Take Atlanta & Beyond: An International
Festival of Magic and Wonder,” a puppetry festival hosted in part by the Center for
Puppetry Arts. Vince Anthony is quoted as saying, “The festival will give a wonderful
global perspective on the art form.”
Happy 30th Birthday!
Beginning September 12, 2008 and running
through September 14, the Center hosted
a celebratory 30th Anniversary Weekend.
All performances and activities throughout
the 30th Anniversary Weekend were
available only to Center for Puppetry Arts
Members. Activities included the exclusive
opening of the Center’s newest exhibit, Jim
Henson: Wonders from His Workshop; special
Behind-the-Scenes Tours conducted by
Jim Henson’s daughters Lisa, Cheryl, and
Heather; performances of the Center’s The
Ugly Duckling; Create-A-Puppet Workshops;
and a Jim Henson-themed birthday cake. The
weekend also included The Muppet Movie
SING-ALONG, during which host Heather
Henson led a singing tour through one of Jim
Henson’s landmark films.

National Endowment for the Humanities
With the support of the National Endowment for the Humanities,
puppets from the Center for Puppetry Arts’ Museum Collection
were surveyed to assess conditions, identify treatment needs, and
establish conservation priorities. The survey was conducted during
Spring 2009 by consulting conservator Renée Stein in collaboration
with Center staff Jeremy Underwood, Curator of Exhibits, and Melissa
McCarriagher, Registrar. Puppets selected for the survey were identified
by Center staff as part of the new exhibition currently being planned.
The survey included shadow, rod, string, hand, stop-motion, and foundobject
puppets from the African and European as well as North and
South American collections. A comprehensive survey of the Asian
collection was accomplished in 2008 with support from the Institute of
Museum and Library Services.

Free and Reduced-Price Ticket Program
During 2008-09, the declining economy and resulting budget cuts made it increasingly
difficult for schools and organizations serving low-income children and those with special
needs to find the funding for field trips. The Center experienced many cancellations, especially
in the fall of 2008. However, thanks to the support of our generous donors, 88,557 free
or reduced-price tickets were provided to ensure that Center programming remained accessible
to children of all backgrounds. One of the largest groups to benefit was the Atlanta Public School
System through the Center’s participation in the City of Atlanta’s Cultural Experience Project.

The City of Atlanta’s Cultural Experience Project is an innovative public/
private partnership affording every Atlanta Public School (APS) student from Pre-
Kindergarten through 12th grade the opportunity to experience the city’s
premier art and cultural venues at no cost. The Center for Puppetry Arts has
participated in the Project every year since its inception in 2005. Thanks to
the support of the Zeist and Daniel P. Amos Family Foundations and the
Turner Broadcasting System, every APS First Grader had the opportunity to
visit the Center, see a show and make a puppet during the 2008-09 school year.
Contributions from the Zeist and Amos Foundations supported the cost of
the tickets, while Turner Broadcasting underwrote the cost of transportation
to the Center, completely funding the experience.
All Center activities met Georgia Learning Performance Standards while free
downloadable study guides allow teachers to enhance student learning before
or after the visit. A total of 5,340 tickets were provided for the students of 67
APS elementary schools. Of these, 64 were Title I schools serving a majority
low-income student body. Many of these children are unlikely to visit the Center
outside of a school field trip, making the experience even more valuable.

String Fling Gala 2008
Stayin’ Alive! was the groovy theme of the 2008 String Fling gala.
The black-tie optional event transported 300 guests back to
1978 when the Center was founded. A cocktail hour and silent
auction were followed by a special performance of the “A-Train”
sequence from the Center’s award-winning production of Duke
Ellington’s Cat and dinner. An exciting live auction featured an exclusive
Ghastly Dreadfuls adult Halloween party at the Center, VIP
tours of the Jim Henson and Sesame Street Studios, and some
exciting vacation packages. Special guests included Kevin Clash,
puppeteer of Sesame Street’s Elmo as well as all three of the late
Jim Henson’s daughters, Lisa, Cheryl and Heather. The evening’s
grand finale was a special “YMCA” dance number performed by
the event committee to celebrate the achievement of the gala’s
fundraising goal. The event raised $258,000 to support the Center’s
programming, including free and reduced-price tickets for underserved
children.

agencies, and individuals. Major funding for the Center is provided by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners under the guidance of the Fulton County
Arts Council. Major support is provided by the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs. These programs are supported in part by the Georgia Council
