From Our Pastor 

Dear People of Holy Family, 

During the month of June there are lots of 

changes. Hopefully the Lord will send us favorable 

weather for our crops and gardens to produce 

the food that we need. New graduates will be 

searching for jobs. Families will begin their summer vacations. 

Attendance at Mass will vary with visitors and locals away for family 

gatherings. Please honor God with weekly worship wherever you 

may go. God is always there for us. 

Our seminarian Dustin Collins is doing a two year internship 

at Holy Family when he is present during the school year of 

St. Meinrad from fall through spring. During the summer Dustin is 

present in his own Diocese of Knoxville. He will be ordained a 

transitional Deacon on June 11th at Notre Dame Catholic Church, 

212 Mount Bethel Road, Greeneville, Tennessee 33345. I have 

just listed the address where you may want to send him a card in 

honor of his ordination. When he returns to Holy Family in the fall, 

he will be serving as a deacon at the altar. Next year he will be 

ordained a priest for his Diocese. On behalf of Holy Family Parish, 

we pray that the Holy Spirit will empower Dustin to be a holy leader 

for the church. We urgently need holy deacons and priests to 

serve in our churches for the sacraments. 

The long awaited announcement for a new Bishop arrived 

on April 26th. Our present retired Bishop Gerald Gettelfinger 

now becomes Bishop emeritus. He wishes to serve our Diocese 

wherever he can celebrate the sacraments for a parish. He will live 

between St. Wendell and St. Joseph parishes on the northwest 

side of Evansville. He has served us well over these past 22 years 

as our Chief Shepherd. 

We now welcome a 50 year old man as our new Bishop. 

Our Bishop-elect is Charles C. Thompson. He comes from the 

Archdiocese of Louisville. He is their present vicar general which 

means that he is just under the Bishop in the Archdiocese. He will 

be ordained on Wednesday, June 29th at Roberts Stadium at 2:00 

p.m. Evansville time. The Bishop comes from a big family. He has 

some 90 first cousins alone. 

Our retiring Bishop has invited everyone from all the parishes 

of the Evansville Diocese to attend this grace-filled moment. 

This is a great time to take your families and be inspired by beautiful 

Catholic music and prayer. The rituals are so beautiful. You will 

leave the ordination Mass spiritually renewed. All parishes in the 

Diocese are being asked to close their offices Wednesday afternoon 

on the day of the ordination so that all parish staffs can attend. 

Let us pray for our new Bishop-elect Charles Thompson so that he 

can lead all parishes of the Evansville Diocese from 12 southwestern 

counties to be one in doing the Lord’s work. He also has a 

tremendous task ahead to be shepherd over 29 Catholic schools. 

We have a lot less quilters now at Holy Family. Many have 

died since I have been here. We probably have about ten at the 

most at any time to guilt. We have a few who come in the evening. 

Our quilters are making an appeal for small groups of parishioners 

to come together and donate quilt tops and have them quilted by 

someone else and donate them for the parish picnic. This practice 

is done in many parishes. Quilting is such an art. We have such 

beautiful quilts for our annual picnic. Let us help 

our remaining quilters if we can.

Stewardship Conversion 

In 1992, the U.S. bishops promulgated their 

pastoral letter on stewardship entitled “Stewardship: 

A Disciple’s Response.” By linking the stewardship way 

of life with discipleship in Jesus Christ, the U.S. 

bishops effectively reminded all Christians that being 

a good steward is not an option, it’s imperative. Developing 

a stewardship attitude is both a “journey toward” 

and a “retreat from.” It’s a journey toward the challenging 

ideal of the good steward found throughout the 

gospels; it’s a retreat from the “I-me-my” selfishness 

that the world promotes as a laudable goal. 

Stewardship is much more than the things we 

do with our time, talent, and treasure; it’s an attitude, 

a mentality, a frame of reference, a way of life. For 

most Catholic Christians, it requires a change of 

heart, a process of conversion. Listen to the U.S. 

bishops, who say in their 1992 pastoral letter: “For 

one who is Christ’s disciple there is no dichotomy, and 

surely no contradiction, between building the kingdom 

and serving human purposes as a steward does”; and 

also “Being a disciple is not just something else to do, 

alongside many other things suitable for Christians, 

it is a total way of life and requires continuing conversion.” 

HOLY FAMILY EXPOSITION 

AND BENEDICTION 

All parishioners have the special opportunity to 

take part in the Exposition and Benediction of the 

Blessed Sacrament at Holy Family Church. Exposition 

will begin at 8:30 a.m. following the morning Mass, with 

Evening Prayer and Benediction at 7:00 p.m. 

Everyone is encouraged to make a visit to church 

and spend some time with Jesus.

Bishop-elect, Father Charles Thompson in a recent newspaper article said, “The Eucharist is 

clearly the center of my life, ministry, and service.” He went on to say, “This is clearly the focus of 

my intimacy with Jesus Christ, which gives purpose and meaning to all I am about as a priest and as 

a Catholic Christian person.” 

Father Thompson reminds us that Jesus is not only present for us today in the Eucharist but 

wants an intimate relationship with us. There is no other relationship that we can have like the one 

with Jesus. He understands our individual strengths and weaknesses. He understands our joy and 

sorrow and as our brother, experiences them with us. As our Lord and Savior, He provides us with 

the spiritual food we need on a daily basis. 

I know that through the Eucharist, Jesus is not only present in me but also in my Catholic 

sisters and brothers. Sometimes Jesus will give me answers through their words. Sometimes their 

willingness to listen to my concerns will shed a different light on them. In Matthew 18:20 Jesus 

says, “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in their midst.” 

If you are going through a difficult time and could use a Catholic friend in Jesus to talk to, 

give Holy Family Stephen Ministry a call. We will provide you with a confidential one to

From the Principal ~ June 2011 

Our school year has quickly flown by and the students will begin their summer breaks at the close 

of school on June 1 st . Our students and staff have really “Made a Difference….a single step at a time,” 

through actions both big and small, from the smile or hug to cheer up another to their generous giving 

for many causes, but especially to Haiti, DI, and the Food Bank. It is such a wonderful thing to see our 

students embrace service as a part of their lives! 

As summer begins, we are looking forward to time spent with family and friends. And while we 

like to take a break away from school, students are always excited to come back and participate in the 

various summer activities. Our Summer Kid’s Camps are taking place throughout June and are a great 

way for students to have fun while interacting with music, art, and Spanish. Summer AR day will be 

June 30 th , so be sure to keep reading those books over the summer to get a jump start on those AR 

points! And don’t forget about the Strassenfest activities in August, as we will again have a float in the 

parade and will sponsor the Wettlauf Run/Walk. Of course, we also have an activity for those who love 

the water…The First Annual Holy Family Cardboard Boat Regatta on Saturday, August 13 th . This is an 

event you won’t want to miss, so keep your eyes out for information in the Sunday bulletins! 

As the 2011-12 school year approaches, there are a few dates to make mention of. School registration 

for the 2011-12 year will take place on Monday, July 18 th at 6:00 p.m. It will begin in church with a brief 

welcome and prayer, followed by registration and an open house. August 11 th will be the first day of school 

for the new year. There are still opportunities for families to enroll their students in Holy 

Family School, as the voucher program will begin July 1, 2011. If you would like more 

info. regarding the vouchers, please feel free to contact the school office at 482-4485.

Holy Family School Board Minutes ~ April 14, 2011 


Introduction 

The Holy Family School Board met April 14, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. Kathy Gutgsell, Ben Hasenour, Kim Lottes, Kent 

Heim, LaVon Doersam, Kathy Schroering, Sally Sternberg, Jason Hemmerlein and Ryan Prechtel attended. The 

meeting opened with a prayer by Fr. John. A motion to accept the amended March minutes was made by Kent Heim 

and seconded by Kathy Schroering. 

Principal’s Report 

Reviewed upcoming dates for the next month. 

Celebration and Progress 

“Krazy Kamp” was a great success. The students were exceptional and quite enjoyable to watch. Lots of 

hard work was put in by the students and Mrs. Getzin and Mrs. Linette. Thanks to all of you! 

The preschool and kindergarten art show was well attended and raised funds to continue the playground 

area projects (mulch, flowerbed, etc.) 

Fish Fry – Thanks to all who helped to make it a success! 

Best of luck to the two Destination Imagination Teams (DIamonds and MCIS) who will be competing this 

weekend at the state contest. (MCIS received the Spirit of DI award in New Albany.) 

Additional items 

Science Textbook Adoption – will be going with FOSS kits – will be splitting with Precious Blood 

Parent/Student Handbook 2011-2012 – Review for policy…will be voting on this at the next meeting. 

Fr. John’s Report 

Each child wrote a Lenten Resolution and Father wrote something on each one and sent it back to the child as 

encouragement. 

Reconciliation Service – The children did a really good job of keeping quiet and respectful during the penance 

time. Impressed with the children’s religious knowledge. 

Subcommittee Reports 

Facilities – Moving the school server to an air conditioned office in the Parish office area. Will also be swapping 

some school/parish servers this summer. 

Budget - Tuition was light this month but we are still ahead for the year. Expenses are in line. 

Marketing 

Working on summer camps – Art Camp, Spanish, Music & Movement & Kindergarten Readiness 

Working on Boat Regatta on August 13 th on Patoka River – Proposing that check-in will be at 8 am 

Currently have a facebook page for marketing 

Edline will have a news link with registration form and information 

Would like to have a Corporate Race – possibly have 8-10 boats 

Also have a General Race 

Would have awards for both Corporate and General races 

Working on revising the Holy Family website 

Fundraising – Flower fundraiser – Initially it looks like we are close to the same amount that we sold last year – 

do not have profit amounts yet 

New Business 

Officer Elections – Board Members need to be thinking about if they would like to hold an Office next year. 

Nominate School Board Members – Need to be thinking about people that we feel would want to be involved with 

school board. We will have 5 names on the Ballot and then 2 will be elected and the Finance person will be assigned. **** 

Old Business 

Staff Appreciation dinner - Appreciation dinner will be Friday, May 13 th . Discussed menu 

Fall Fundraising Ideas – Will continue to do the Cookie Dough fundraiser this fall since it is such a good fundraiser. 

No further fundraisers until the HOOT. We will be eliminating the Script Bonanza fundraiser. 

Review Enrollment – Discussed where enrollment is at right now. People that have not responded will be 

contacted in the next few weeks.

Mrs. Weinzapfel talked about the various activities/projects planned for the next month. 

Mrs. Hannaman attended from 4 th grade and she talked about her class having shadow boxes for display.

As I reflect on my trip to Haiti the word that best describes my experience at this time is overwhelmed. 

Overwhelmed by the poverty and suffering I saw all around me. Oh, I knew the statistics about Haiti… 

population 9.2 million 

58% are undernourished 

80% live in poverty 

58% with access to safe drinking water 

50% illiteracy rate 

the worst health statistics in the Western world … 

Yet, I was not prepared to have children and adults approach me rubbing their stomachs and asking 

for food because of the hunger pains. Seeing so many people without the basic needs of food, shelter, and 

drinkable water is still difficult to comprehend. The basic needs that I so often take for granted. 

In spite of the suffering and poverty, I was overwhelmed by the joy and gratitude expressed in song, 

prayer, and gestures. They praise God with their whole being and are so grateful for the little they do have. 

Not only are they grateful, but they are willing to share what little they have. Some of the women from the 

micro-lending program brought us eggs. They said that due to no rain they had nothing from their gardens to 

give us. As we met with Father Brunot, the school children, the parents of the students in the sponsorship 

program, the women in the micro-lending program, and those getting medical help at the clinic, their 

message was basically the same: “Tell the people of Holy Family Parish, Holy Family School, and the 

surrounding areas that we thank God for them, and we thank them for the marvelous things they have done 

for us. Please don’t forget us.”

in the least, I was overwhelmed 

by the generosity 

of the Holy Family

as I saw with my own 

eyes how you have 

made a difference in 

the lives of our brothers 

and sisters in Dupity.

Spring is bringing a new refreshing outlook for all of us. Our gardens are beginning to bloom with the promise of 

more colors in the future. Even our children are happier to get outside and do what children do. We are making plans 

for what we will do with the children when school is out and summer is upon us. Which brings me to this compelling 

article that I would like to share with you. 

A TEENAGE BRAIN – A WORK IN PROGRESS 

New discoveries about adolescent brain development have opened up fresh ways of thinking about teen behavior, 

and offer new insight into how parents can help their teens understand the risks of drugs and alcohol. For instance:

Scientific evidence reveals that the brain is fully mature at about age 25 – much later than previously believed. 

One of the last areas of the brain to develop is the Prefrontal Cortex, which is responsible for processing 

information, making judgments, controlling impulses and foreseeing consequences. 

This new information throws into stark relief the major risks of teenage substance use, including the possibility of 

causing permanent neurological damage to the developing brain. Concerned parents want to know how to apply these 

findings too real life. That’s what “A Parent’s Guide to the Teen Brain” is all about. 

Through an entertaining and compelling mix of media – video, interactive segments, scenario based role-playing 

experiences, expert advice, and practical tips – “A Parent’s Guide to the Teen Brain” illustrates the links between teen 

behavior and the big changes happening in teen brains. In doing so, the site offers parents the keys to keeping their 

own perspective while guiding their teens more effectively through this tumultuous time of life.

MAY 5th, 2011 

The annual Mother’s Day Mass and Dinner began with Mass celebrated by Father Bill Wargel for all living 

and deceased members of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption Sodality. After Mass, members enjoyed a 

catered dinner in Fellowship Hall. 

After the meal, Co-Directors Jan Durcholz and Sylvia Recker welcomed the ladies. Jan informed the 

ladies that since the cost of food has gone up, the price of the meal at the next meeting would be $6.00. This 

would again include a dessert. She also told the ladies that there were papers on the tables to volunteer to make 

a dessert for the quilters and also to donate an attendance prize for the next meeting. 

Jan then asked Connie Schroering to speak about the by-laws & functions of our Ladies Sodality. Connie 

shared with the ladies what our ‘mission’ was as members of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption Sodality 

and explained the by laws & functions of the Sodality. She informed them that to be a member of the Sodality 

meant to co-operate with the pastor in providing the spiritual and temporal needs of the faith community of Holy 

Family Parish. Connie also explained to the ladies that we would no longer meet in October, that as they know, the 

Mother/Daughter Banquet is now being held in May. The Christmas Dinner will be held on Tuesday, November 29 th , 

2011. She told the ladies that since we will no longer meet in October, that the Card Party Committee has decided 

to set a tentative, not a definite date, for the next card party in October of 2012. Connie named the committees 

& chairperson(s) for each committee. She asked the ladies to seriously think about coming forward to help out 

with the card party and the other committees by contacting Diane Verkamp at the parish office. Connie informed 

the ladies that Jan & Sylvia would no longer be co-directors. She thanked them for their service for the past two 

years and the excellent job they did for the Sodality. She also informed the ladies that since there would no longer 

be co-directors, that Rosie Gutgsell has agreed to be the ‘go to person’ if anyone had any questions concerning 

the Sodality. Rosie’s name and number will now be in the bulletin and Parish Press as the contact for the Ladies 

Sodality. Connie reminded the ladies that our Sodality Feast Day, The Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption, is 

August 15 th . She said it is appropriate to have at least one Mass on that day for the living and deceased members 

of the Sodality. Connie closed by thanking the ladies for all they have done and continue to do for Holy Family 

Parish. She said they should be proud of our Sodality and make sure we remain a strong organization. 

Sylvia read a thank you from the Sisters of St. Benedict for the ladies’ generous gift for the Peru Missions. 

Jonnie Heeke then gave a report on behalf of the quilt committee. She told the ladies that since there were not as 

many donations being made to the committee, that at this time there would not be as many quilts as they have had in 

the past for the parish picnic. Because of this, she asked the ladies if they could try to get a group together to help 

make donations for the quilts. She thanked the ladies for all they do for the quilt committee and said without the 

continued support of the Sodality and parish; it would not be possible for the quilters to do what they do. 

After the business portion of the meeting & before prizes were announced, the ladies enjoyed playing Bingo. 

Treasurer Rosie Gutgsell thanked the ladies who helped her at the raffle tables. She also informed the ladies that at 

the Christmas meeting, the tickets for the raffle prizes would increase from .25 cents to .50 cents. Names were then 

drawn for prizes. A Dairy Queen/movie money packet, donated by Doris Egler and Betty Hildenbrand, was won by 

Brenda Schitter. A Black Buggy Gift Card, donated by Janet Epple, was won by Barb Hopf. The $5.00 attendance will 

be $10.00 at the next meeting since Elise Krapf was not present at the meeting. The ½ pot was won by Rosie Henriott. 

Sylvia and Jan thanked everyone who helped prepare for the Mass, Dinner and Meeting, especially chairpersons, 

Rosie Werner, Leona Hief and Karen Mundy. They closed the meeting asking the ladies to stand and pray the Memorare.

….. that you can make a gift through an IRA charitable rollover that can potentially save you 

money on your income taxes? Normally, a distribution from your IRA is taxed as ordinary income. 

However, tax legislation enacted in December 2010 allows individuals 70½ or older to make a 

direct distribution from an IRA to a qualified charity, such as Holy Family Parish. These distributions 

are not subject to income tax and particularly benefit people who do not itemize deductions 

on their tax return. This opportunity is available through December 31, 2011. Please contact
