Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
First Reading: 1 Kings 19:4-8
The prophet Elijah lived about 800 years before Christ.
Because he was loyal to God, he fell into disfavor with
King Ahab and Queen Jezebel. He had to flee for his life
to Mount Horeb (also known as Mount Sinai). Today’s
passage takes place as he begins his flight.
Second Reading: Ephesians 4:30-5:2
As in the past four Sundays, our second Scripture reading
is from the letter to the Ephesians. This part of the letter
contains advice for Christian living. The author says that
actions which cause division in a community are simply
unacceptable. In today’s reading, the author sees mutual
forgiveness as essential for any group that calls itself
Christian. There is an echo here of part of the Lord’s
prayer.
Scripture Focus: John 6:41-51
The theme of “bread from heaven” is developed in many
ways in this chapter of John’s gospel. Today’s reading
opens with the people murmuring. Since he was born in
time, since the people knew his father and his mother,
Jesus simply could not have come from heaven. Jesus
does not meet their objection directly. He raises the discussion
to a higher level. To understand him it is necessary
to have faith. Only God can give faith, God holds out
the gift to all who are open to receive it. Faith is acceptance
of Jesus, and this faith in Jesus, eating the living
bread, gives eternal like.
Life Focus:
1. Relate an experience when you had a difficult time
seeing Christ in someone you know well.
Civil Discourse
“Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.” These words
bring us up short! What could we be doing to grieve the
Holy Spirit? Also, the same things that the Ephesians
were doing in the time of Paul, that is, fighting, shouting,
reviling each other with fury, anger, and malice. Just tune
in to talk radio some day or observe some “road rage” on
the expressway. If we who are partakers of the Body of
Christ can treat one another this way, what does that mean
about our belief in Christ’s message of peace and reconciliation?
The Eucharist is the sacrament of unity. It is
communion with God and with each other. A good first
step would be to speak civilly to each other, even in disagreement!

for the world, especially members of our parish who are

Grief-Share Support Group
For those experiencing the loss of a loved one: Meets
every Monday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 PM in St. Ambrose
Pastoral Center. This support group gives grievers
an opportunity to experience hope, help and healing. All
group meetings are “open format,” to allow anyone to
begin at anytime. You must make an appointment prior to
attending your first meeting. Other family and individual
counseling services are available. Contact Tom Schmidt
(618-219-0612)—Masters in counseling (Lindenwood
University).

would like to just come and see what the Catholic

Please pick up your dishes left from funeral luncheons
and salad luncheon. They can be picked up at the
parish office. Monday to Friday 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

Ice Cream Social: Please join us for Ice Cream and social
time on Tuesday, August 14, 6:30-7:30 PM in the
Community Center. Students may bring their supplies to
school after they finish their ice cream. (No other food
items will be available).
Fast Direct: The August letter was sent through Fast
Direct on August 2, 2012. All forms and supply lists are
already available on the “Links” section of Fast Direct.

2nd Annual St. Ambrose Apple Dash
The 2nd Annual St. Ambrose Apple Dash 5K Run and
Family Fun Walk will be held Saturday, September 15th
at 8 AM at Glazebrook Park. Bring out the whole family
for a morning of fun during the Applefest weekend! The
cost is $25 for adult and $15 for students (under 18). Age
3 and under are free (no race shirt). Race T-Shirt ONLY
(Not running/walking) $15. Add $10 after August 31st

Godfrey K.C. Ladies Auxiliary Rummage Sale
Godfrey K.C. Ladies Auxiliary is holding a Rummage
Sale on Thursday, August 16th from 3 P.M. to 7 P.M. and
Friday, August 17th from 8 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the Godfrey
K.C. Hall at 1713 Stamper Lane in Godfrey. Donations
of gently used items will be greatly appreciated. No
clothing will be accepted. Donations can be dropped off
at the Godfrey K.C. Hall on Monday, August 13th from
4:00 to 7 P.M., Wednesday, August 15th from 4 to 7 P.M.
and Thursday, August 16th from 12 noon to 3 P.M. Profits
from sale of items are used to support local charities.

Preparation Class
Our next Infant Baptismal Preparation Class will be on
Monday, September 10th at 7:00 PM in the Pastoral
Center. The session will last approximately one hour.
Please call the Parish office 466-2921 to register.
Baptismal Preparation Class is a prerequisite for baptism
at St. Ambrose. If you have attended one in the past three
years you are not obligated to attend, but if it has been
more than three years you will need to register.
Fr. Steve encourages registration sand attendance of the
class early on in the pregnancy because the classes will be
held quarterly.
St. Patrick’s Cemetery
St. Patrick’s Cemetery is please to announce that we will
be selling grave pillows & blankets beginning August 1,
2012. All paid orders by September 30, 2012 will receive
a 10 percent discount. Installation is included for all
graves at St. Patrick’s Cemetery. If you need more information
contact Dan Gebben at the cemetery office at 618-
466-0252. Orders must be place by November 1st.
