2nd Sunday of Lent March 4, 2012
Looking for a Spiritual Boost?
Lent is near, and you’re not sure what to
do? Do you give up candy or coffee? Are
you willing to commit a little time to Jesus?
Maybe spend one hour a week with
Him? God is calling us...you and me...to
be Holy. This Lenten Season is a great
opportunity to deepen our prayer life.
Show Jesus the love you have for Him, in the Blessed
Sacrament! No person, no thing, no activity in this world
can give you the love and consolation that you will receive
only from Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament! March
3 & 4 there will be an Adoration Boost at all of the Masses.
Please prayerfully consider taking this ‘leap of faith’
and sign up for one hour with Jesus! It will forever change
your life and you will never regret it! God bless you!
My Dear Parishioners,
Praised be Jesus Christ!
I used to wonder how God could lie to
Abraham about sacrificing his son Isaac. But the
story begins by telling us God put Abraham to the
test. Abraham himself seems to know it’s a test—
in verses left out or our reading, he tells the servants
that he and Isaac will return after the sacrifice;
he also tells Isaac that God will provide the offering.
Apparently, I’m the only one fooled by God.
I don’t know if I would have passed the
test. I would have at least argued with God about
it, begging him to spare my son. Yet in our second
reading, St. Paul reminds us that God did not spare
his own son. (Rom 8:32) He passed his own test.
Jesus was sacrificed so that God could show us
how much he loved us: By dying, Jesus showed us
the promise of resurrection, which shows us that
we can also have new life by the forgiveness of our
sins. If God loves us so much that he gives his Son
to die for us, why would he not forgive us? Or as
Paul says, if He is on our side, who can hurt us?
What does that tell us about life? You
may have noticed that things don’t always go your
way. We sometimes suffer for no apparent reason.
We may lose someone we love through death. We
may be tempted to lose faith when we see wars,
killer tornados, terrorist attacks—if “God is for
us,” why does he allow these things? Because he
is still testing us. And not necessarily testing the
victims of these troubles. If I get angry at God
because I hear about someone’s death, I haven’t
passed the test.
Does that mean those tragedies are our
fault? No, God gives everyone free will and some
people choose to do wrong. And some accidents
are just accidental; no one is necessarily at fault.
God intervenes sometimes and lives are saved.
Other times, God intervenes by saving us after
death with our resurrection. But as long as people
doubt God’s love, there will be tests. That’s why it
is so important to proclaim the Kingdom: so that
someday all people will know God’s love and not
need to be tested.
In the Hearts of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph,
Have you ever thought about enrolling your
child in a Catholic School? Did you know
there are scholarships available to help with
tuition costs, and tuition fees can be determined
by an ability to pay and/or the number
of children in the family enrolled in the
Network. Also, if your home-schooled
child wishes to participate in extracurricular
activities (football, speech, drama,
etc.) at the Catholic Schools without
being an enrolled student, that avenue is
open to your family! Home-schooled students
may be allowed to participate in JPII
“The Year of Faith”
Pope Benedict XVI
has announced for the Church
the “YEAR of FAITH,” from
October 11, 2012 until November
24. 2013. This coincides
with the 50th Anniversary of the
opening of the Second Vatican Council. Accordingly,
the Pope is inviting us to cross the
“door of faith” and “rediscover once more
the pleasure of nourishing ourselves with the
Word of God.” Watch for more as the
Church prepares us for a “new evangelization”
in the year ahead!
The Shanley Players Present:
Beauty and the Beast
The Shanley Players will present the timeless fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast” as their
46 th annual musical. This imaginative retelling of the classic story of the transformational
power of love speaks to all age groups and has enthralled Broadway audiences for
over 13 years. The tradition of Shanley Musicals began in 1967 when Brother Harold
Andrew Gabrelcik staged “The Unsinkable Molly Brown.” With his goal of making
theatre more accessible and appealing to as many students as possible, he double cast all
of the lead roles. His vision of the First Nighter Dinner -with the transformation of the
gymnasium from bleachers and basketball hoops to an elegant dinner surrounding – was
also realized that year. A committee of parents were in charge of the dinner arrangements
and décor, staff and students helped set up and serve, and 46 years later the First
Nighter continues to be a Shanley Community tradition..
A diverse group of students makes up this year's cast, involving those whose first
love is musical theatre and those who have never (dared) try out for a play. About
75 students from all grades make up the cast, crew, and pit with most students participating
in multiple activities like basketball, soccer, speech and debate, student
council, and key club . The production staff is made up of Shanley graduates and
teachers: Director Andrea Krejci Paradis ('05), Production Manager and Costumer
Sandy Thiel ('68), Technical Director, Set and Lighting designer Adam Roder ('05),
Choreographer Patrick Kasper (’85), Music Director Rebecca Raber (Shanley
Choir Director), Pit Director and Conductor Donald Pochmara (Shanley Band Director).
The Shanley musical is a long standing family tradition for many, with several
parents of our current thespians having participated in musicals during their
years at Shanley. The Shanley Players and the First Nighter Committee cordially
invite you to “Be Our Guest” at the 46th Annual First Nighter and Candlelight Dinner
on Thursday, March 15, 2012 at Sts. Anne and Joachim Church Social Hall.
Doors will be open at 5:45 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6:15 p.m. The show
will follow at 7:30 pm. A shuttle will be available if you would like to park at Shanley
High School and ride over to dinner. All seats for the show are reserved, with
best available seating for the performance assigned in order of paid reservations
received. If you are interested in purchasing a table for eight adults, please contact
Nancy Kasper at 701-293-5136. If you do not have a table of eight, a table will be
assigned. For ticket information for the remaining performances on Friday, March
16th at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 17th at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., and March 18th
