These changes to the estimation are interpreted as signifying the importance of accounting for the survey design and non-response in the data, Finally, Table 5.8 examines the effects of applying the SYETP model to the full sample and the sample after sample reduction. This is a further examination of the sample reduction effects upon the desired model of SYETP participation. The importance of the sampling weight has been shown. The results weighted by the survey weight are discussed first, in a comparison of columns 2 and 4, followed by a comparison of the unweighted data in columns 1 and 3. The non-response weighting is not fully appropriate for the final sample as it does not include further effects of attrition, which are yet to be constructed, however it is presented here to allow the opportunity to disregard the share due to non-response weight effects when comparing before and after sample reduction. The table shows that whether or not the non-response weight was used, the results are affected by the use of only the reduced sample compared to all those cases available before sample reduction. In using the full sample compared to the reduced sample, two important types of changes are found that would alter interpretation of the estimates: changes in sign, from positive coefficient to negative and vice versa, and changes in which variables are statistically significant. These changes occur whether the weight is used or not, however the incidence is different in the weighted data to that in the unweighted data. The changes in sign occur only for variables that were not statistically significant. No change in significance is associated with a change in sign. The results weighted by the survey weight change sign for gender, other ethnicity, South Australia/Northern Territory, fathers occupation was labourer, mothers occupation was labourer or tradesperson, and religion brought up in was Catholic or other Christian. The variables that change statistical significance, either falling out of statistical significance or becoming significant, are Roman Catholic schooling, highest qualification was schooling to year 12, mostly lived in a city to age 14, and father held a post school qualification when respondent was 14. The unweighted results change sign for gender, South Australia/Northern Territory, highest qualification in 1984 is degree or diploma or other
191 post-school qualification, and longest job held by 1984 is 2 to 3 years. The variables that change statistical significance, are interviewed in Western Australia/ Tasmania in 1984, Roman Catholic schooling, highest qualification was schooling to year 12, no job held by 1984, CEP referrals in 1984, mothers occupation was plant operative, and brought up in other Christian religion. Sample reduction is found to affect the results of modelling SYETP quite substantially. Comparison between the full data and reduced data estimates shows significant differences between the results of the models, and these are interpreted as representative of the presence of attrition bias. This supports the theoretical position that bias is introduced to the estimates. It also concurs with the empirical material of Alderman et al. (2000) discussed earlier where similar impacts on modelling were also found. The next section deals with multivariate modelling of the sample reduction. Weights are then produced to account for the sample reduction.
